My college friend was visiting from out of town, and we were planning to get together for lunch. I had heard great things about Morandi, and their outside dining in the West Village seemed like a fun spot to enjoy a meal. Luckily we were able to secure one of the curbside tables and take in the sun. It was such a nice, warm day that I thought an Aperol Spritz would be a worthwhile indulgence, but theirs included blood orange, making it way too syrupy and sweet. Thankfully, the doughy Italian bread was so delicious that I ate several slices to absorb the rich citrus puree. For my meal, I ordered the Contadina grain salad, which started with a base of pearl barley and included roasted, seasonal vegetables. The highlighted veggies at the time were zucchini, which I love, and onions, which I certainly do not. I really wished I had been warned of the stinky onions ahead of time. However, the shrimp that I added to the bowl were plump and perfectly grilled. The light, red wine vinaigrette added some tartness without overpowering the ingredients. Morandi served above average Italian cuisine in a casual, cafe environment. Its sidewalk tables were ideal for people-watching in the warmer months. read more

My family and I made a reservation for Morandi on a chilly Friday night. We were seated promptly and began perusing the menu. We did a bottle of wine, but there is an extensive wine and cocktail list for any palate. As a starter, we went with the burrata with tomatoes and olives. I went with the Agnolotti di capesante, while my family had the Linguine alle vongole and Tagliatelle alla bolognese. We also did a side of broccolini. The food was unfortunately not good. My agnolotti was tough on the sides with little flavor. My family member who ordered the Linguine has a low threshold for spice and there was red pepper flakes all over the entrée (the menu doesn't mention it, otherwise she wouldn't have ordered it). I took over eating her entrée, which was rather flavorless aside from the red pepper flakes. The broccolini was bland and soggy. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu, which was just OK. The ambiance was also not a win for us. We had a reservation, but we were still seated in the area near the door and the bar. With people coming in and out, we kept getting blasted with cold air each time the door opened. It was also extremely loud and cramped with the tables in close proximity. The saving grace here was the service. We had a great waiter and the staff came around to check on us frequently. We never felt rushed throughout the entire night. Overall, Morandi was unfortunately a disappointment. The items we ordered were not up to par for the price point. I went during weekday lunch, which was not very busy, however I could see this place getting more action during dinner and weekend brunch (which id like to try!) The food was very good! I had Cacio e Pepe, and asked for gluten free pasta if available, which it was! The menu doesn't mention GF anywhere but I would definitely ask as it seemed most dishes could be replaced with the GF pasta. For dessert, I had an amazing affogato! read more

So it went on a warm, sultry afternoon when I stopped by Morandi to sit outside, sip a glass of Rosé and enjoy the balmy bliss while taking in the fragrant blossoms in McCarthy Square, the beautiful pocket park right across the street. The service was attentive but the fly in the ointment was definitely the wine, which tasted like vinegar. The real surprise however, came with the bill - 15 dollars for a single glass of vino! Let me get this straight, you want 15 buckaroonies for one (small) glass of a sub-par, vinegary house wine? Fuhgeddaboudit. Avocado Toast with Tomato Jam, Radish, Poached Egg and Bacon (as an add-on) A fairly decent piece of thick cut multigrain toast with a hidden layer, but very flavorful tomato jam, then mashed avocado with actually well-crisp cut pieces of bacon and topped off with a poached egg. The best Tagliata di Manzo (steak) I've ever had! The grilled onions that came with it were phenomenal and the potatoes were good too. The sausage honey focaccia was also really good. The amaretto semifreddo was ok but on the menu it is described as ice cream cake which is incorrect - it is a regular semifreddo. Super nice and attentive service at the bar. A good indicator of a fantastic meal starts with the bread, or whatever they end up bringing you in one of those wicker baskets. A very rustic, crusty, yet moist and slightly sour on the inside treat, my taste buds couldn't wait for the 4 appetizers we ordered as a party of 3. We originally ordered 3 appetizers, but as we fought over the last piece of grilled octopus, we had to order another plate of it! The calamari was so tender and lightly dusted with a simple coating so you could taste every bit of how good it was. Some of the best I've had and I'll compare it to my all-time favorite calamari which can be found at The Dive Bar in Jupiter, FL. The meatball entree was enormous, boasting 5 giant meatballs. There had to be at least a pound of meat in the bowl and they were swimming in a thin tomato sauce. What I liked most about the meatballs was the fact that they were done Sicilian style with pinenuts and plump raisins. The sweet raisins offset the saltiness of the meatballs. I actually ended up eating the leftovers for breakfast. The hand-rolled spaghetti with lemon and Parmesan was so delicate in taste, but very filling (dumpling consistency). I was glad to get the referral for Morandi from a waitress (a former employee) who currently works at the Tuck Room. Another Friday lunch with my friend Rochelle. We've passed by a Morandi many times when we've met for our get togethers in the West Village. Today was the day to dine here during Restaurant Week. When you visit Morandi there are many adjectives to describe it: rustic trattoria, Italian brasserie, and a very warm place to gather with friends and family. Inside is a cornucopia of wooden tables, lovely chandeliers and bureaus displaying bottles of wines. Any seat you are seated at is a winner but of course we opted for a cozy table near the window. The waiter, Alexander, who served us was very attentive and brought the usual for us: water, cup of ice and slices of lemon and limes. There were many menus to study: vino( none for me due to Yoga class later in the evening), Restaurant Week Menu and regular menu. I was about to choose off the menu wanting to savor the Eggplant Parmesan but was glad I didn't. There were many wonderful pastas to choose from but the special Restaurant Week menu had some nice options. Here's what we ordered: Starters: Rochelle chose the Eggplant Parmesan. It sounded great but it wasn't what I expected( I tasted a bit from her portion). It was heavily breaded and smoked mozzarella was utilized versus regular. It was too off for me, Rochelle enjoyed it but found it a bit picante. I'm used to a softer eggplant lightly breaded this was a bit hard. I ate the Insalata de carroti y spinaci: roasted baby carrots, spinach, pine nuts and raisins. Simple but delicious. Entrees: Rochelle ate Cacio e Pepe, an Italian standard. I ate the Casarecce, twist pasta, with crumbled veal and mushrooms with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. The twist pasta was great in having all the ingredients stick to it so every bite was packed with all of it. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend. Dessert: the standards of tiramisu and affogatto and gelato. I decided to have my usual decaf cappuccino and just one scoop of Hazelnut gelato which was good. The cappuccino was a bit bitter. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience. The service is exceptional, Morandi allows you to sit for awhile and enjoy your meal. There's no rushing and the servers are very attentive. Morandi is always busy, and we recently snagged a Friday night reservation. We ordered espresso martinis, the fried olives, and the burrata to start. We also received complimentary bread for the table. The martinis were quite delicious. The burrata was soft and milky, but I thought the corn and zucchini didn't complement the burrata. I didn't have the olives, since they have sausage, but others said they were excellent and flavorful. I had the trofie for my main course, and after recently having had this dish many times in Genoa, Italy, perhaps my expectations were quite too high. The pasta and pesto was good, but green beans somehow felt recently-warmed from a frozen bag of green beans and the potatoes were soggy. Loved the pine nuts, thought. The most peculiar part of the night was the rushed service. Our main waiter was quite friendly and prompt, but there were a couple people who would arrive at our table asking if people were finished with their food. After our appetizers, someone asked if we were done, and I still had half my food on the plate. Similarly, after our main course, only two people had finished their foods, but two of us were still eating. I would have understood this if we were being particularly slow, but we ate at a normal pace, and I think it can come off as rude to clear plates prematurely, since it sends the message that the restaurant is primarily concerned with turning tables, rather than focusing on high-quality service. If Morandi had been located in a different neighborhood, I can easily see this being a 4-star restaurant. However, given that there are other options in the area with better food and more refined service, I think this is an average spot. read more

Started the evening off with a watermelon spritz. It was delicious and refreshing, the perfect drink to get one's palette ready for the meal ahead. We began with the fried olives stuffed with sausage, an absolute MUST, I have never heard of this dish but ooooh so, so tasty! We had the spicy salami foccacia. It wasn't a light and airy foccacia, I wouldn't order again. Onto the main event, the agnolotti di capesante. The pasta was so fresh and light. Highly recommend! I had passed by many times but tonight it was raining and it always gave me the impression that it was a much smaller place but once i got inside, it was much larger than I thought. It is a large space, very European and I was there for a late lunch and the menu was somewhat limited since dinner had not started yet. I was seated immediately and water and Italian bread and EVOO arrived to the table. The Italian bread was delicious, nice and crunchy and even better with the EVOO. I looked over the menu and decided to get the cacio e pepe which I had never had until I was in Italy and there it was the special. It arrived shortly, nice and hot and was delicious. I finished my meal and opted out of dessert but got a double espresso. The waitress was attentive and accommodating as well as the other servers. This is a nice, casual spot in the village for good wine and decent food. Service was wonderful, water glasses constantly refilled, and the food was tasty. We ordered both brunch and lunch dishes. The crepes were very good, the eggs were all cooked as ordered, and the potatoes with the egg dishes were outstanding. Couple of improvements could be made, the poached eggs over vegetables included artichoke hearts, but the spines were left on and they were difficult to eat. They also put lima beans in, but that was not on the menu description, and that is never a nice surprise! The carbonara was more like a cacio e pepe without the pepper, could not taste or see any egg yolk in the dish. And there was no pancetta or Guanciale incorporated into the dish, just two strips on either side of the bowl. But, it had a very cool vibe and the interior design is wonderful. read more

After a long tiring day at work, I was aimlessly scrolling through Instagram when I saw it: a plate of creamy risotto elegantly plated and topped with hunks of short rib. Honing my insta investigator skills, I quickly deduced it came from Morandi (thanks geotags!) and placed an immediate reservation for later that week Sitting down for dinner, looking at the menu was a mere formality as we all knew what we were getting. Unfortunately as with most things in Instagram, they look better than they actually are in real life. Although the short rib was tender and fell apart at the touch of a fork, the risotto was unfortunately bland and lacking in any flavor besides whatever was mingled from the short rib. On the plus, the service was very attentive and kept checking in to make sure everything was good with our meal. Combined with a cozy and old world Italian interior made this a cute place to go if I could just find a dish that speaks to me. read more

I had date night here last weekend. Definitely make a reservation. Tables are quite close together, but we were still able to have an intimate dinner. We shared a carafe of red wine and had brussel sprouts for an appetizer. They were shredded and not what I was expecting, but delicious just the same. And to be fair, my fiance ordered the appetizer, so I did not read the description ahead of time. For my entree, I had meatballs with pine nuts and raisins. They were delicious! A bit salty, but I like salt. Now that I think about it, I'm a little surprised my meal didn't come with a pasta or side, but I had a big lunch, so it didn't bother me. I made my decision based off a previous picture posted on Yelp. I really loved the decor, and without a flash, my pictures do not do the place justice. Should you have to wait to be seated, there is a small bar area. It was definitely crowded, but it was also a Saturday night.
