What a great little hole in the wall! I came to Mori Sushi for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and had a great meal. The service was quick and friendly, the prices cheap, and the food delicious! To start I had the Miso Soup (standard, good) and the Shrimp Tempura, which were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and hot on the inside. For sushi I tried the Lady Killer Roll, a simple but flavorful roll with spicy tuna, jalapeños, spicy mayo, and a fish called "escolar" which I had never heard of but was a lovely accompaniment to the traditional spicy tuna. I have had the sushi in the past, solid. But yesterday I tried the Chicken yaki with veggies and udon. I paid $17 (extra chicken, no problem) for what's pictured. First of all it was clearly microwaved because it was 15 minutes before I opened it and it melted my teeth. Also, where are the vegetables? Lastly about the chicken. If I could I'd give this place a 3.5 but I don't think it's right to drop a the three on Mori sushi. Ambiance - freaking awesome , I love the wooden accents inside and the space itself is just very welcoming. The sushi however was basic at best, the sushi rice didn't stand out and the fish and toppings themselves didn't wow me neither. I also appreciate their hours as well! They were super quick and it was all freshly made, I preferred it way more to Publix sushi if that's a good baseline? I usually do the $5 sushi on Wednesday but I'll definitely just keep coming back here. I got the Philly & Mexican rolls with Miso soup and it came out as exactly as I imagined and wanted. I've had lots of sushi.... This wasn't very good. It wasn't the worst I've ever had, but it wasn't in the same league as the best. The tempura fried rolls had too much batter and were overcooked.... The inside out roll I ordered was very small (not much inside it) and was lacking flavor. The atmosphere seemed sketchy, and the sushi didn't make me want to come back. I ordered the St. Pete roll to go on my way home from work. There was no one sitting inside, so I am not 100% sure if the dining room is open, however to-go orders are happening! St. Pete roll - fried shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, & topped with spicy tuna and crunchy flakes. A little ginger and wasabi on the side finishes it up. While a pretty solid sushi roll - everything tasted pretty fresh and no funny looking pieces - nothing really wow'd me, exactly. Stopped here for a quick pick me up at 3pm on a weekday. We were the only patrons there, to my surprise they were still offering lunch specials! The paper menus seemed to be reused over and over. Utensils and plates are brought out with each menu item. My boyfriend and I decided to share a sushi combo since we were having dinner with my family pretty soon The combo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, a tuna roll, salad, and miso soup. I was on my way to meet friends for an evening out and was keeping an eye out for a place to grab a quick bite one the way- If there's one thing I'm always going to go for it's sushi. Though I'd never been the name rang a bell somewhere in the depths of my Swiss cheese brain and I popped in. It was around 8 on a Saturday night and not busy at all, I had a seat at the sushi bar and grabbed a menu off the counter, then another..their menus (though laminated) are so beaten I legitimately had a difficult time reading them to order. The two people working-one making sushi the other waiting tables-were friendly enough but not attentive in the least. I will say the pricing here was giving 2016 vibes-significantly cheaper than my usual spots. The small portions also matched that pricing. I ordered the tempura veggies and shrimp and a Philly roll with fresh instead of smoked salmon. The batter on the tempura was great, the veggies tasted fresh and crisp. The ponzu sauce somehow lacked flavor, it was served with 3 shrimp, one piece of broccoli, 2 small slices of what I dread was pumpkin (keep reading I dare you) , and 2 thin single layers of onion slice. The fish in the sushi was decent quality and tasted fresh, but after I excused myself to the washroom I was immediately apprehensive -it was filthy...in a way that it hasn't been kept after in a LONG time. My concern grew but yolo I was already in it so ‍.. until I looked past the sushi chef into the kitchen and caught a glimpse of a pumpkin COVERED in mold...how long has that been sitting there?! Mold spores are airborne. I've waited for hours waiting for food poisoning to set in but fingers crossed I think I'm in the clear. The food was decent, but the sanitation standards are unacceptable. It's a bit far from downtown St Pete yet an accesible, easy drive. Not many places around offer an all yellowtail or an all salmon sashimi style appetizer, Mori Sushi does, and it makes me extremely content. At first the waiter served us somebodyelse's food which we corrected and then he served us things we had ordered. On top of that the tempura flakes were missing in the Pink Lady sushi rolls. When we tried to ask why was it missing the waiter tried to argue that its bot supposed to be there then we had to show him their menu. Overall not a good experience. Exploring new sushi places for lunch and found Mori Sushi. I was with two friends and we came in around 12:15p on a Monday and it did have a lunch rush- it is seat yourself but it took about 15 min for our server to get to us, no big deal. This was our first time there and the inside isn't anything special, they have a small sushi bar to sit at and about 6 booth like tables. The booths are wood- they remind me of a beach side restaurant, and they aren't that comfy. We ordered the lunch special- two rolls with soup and salad for just under $9. Amazing! Salad and miso soup were good, and the sushi was filling and tasty. I had the tiger eye roll and the philly roll which both were delicious. A lot of food for a great lunch price! I usually go to Hook's for their lunch special but Mori will definitely be a solid alternative to change it up. read more

Very artistic display with sushi that is solid. I feel like my judgment of sushi easily varies by day/month depending on what other sushi I have recently consumed. Unluckily for Mori Sushi, I recently enjoyed a trip to LA and San Francisco where I pigged out to my little heart's content on raw fish. On top of that, I recently had sushi that blew it out of the water close to home - well Palm Harbor - so I knew it was possible to find delectable fish in Tampa Bay too. I'm not saying Mori Sushi is bad, not by a long shot, but did I sigh with every bite of salmon I took? No. I got the Love Salmon Roll and the Cherry Blossom. I love rolls with fresh fish. I feel like this is where a great sushi restaurant can really shine. I also adore salmon - it's my go-to fish. Both rolls were solid, but the salmon just missed the mark of being supremely silky and the tuna wasn't the freshest I've had. The artistry, however, is impeccable. I enjoyed seeing my two rolls come in the shape of a heart. The table next to me got an orange carved into a bear (you can find pictures of both if you scroll through). Their presentation is definitely Instagram worthy. My husband got the shrimp and steak hibachi. He thought it was ok, but wouldn't come back. I was actually surprised, because I thought the steak had a ton of flavor and the fried rice had the right amount of umami - read oil/fat. It really does show you that taste is subjective. Just to give you an idea, his favorite hibachi place is Kobe Steakhouse off of Ulmerton. I thought it was better than there, but obviously he would disagree. If you tend to run cold, like I do, bring a jacket. I was so glad I did or else I would have been freezing. As others have noted, don't let the outside scare you. It is much nicer inside! It's on a strip next to a laundry mat with a clientele that is not the most high brow. Don't worry, once you step inside you'll be transported away from all that.
