This is one of the most famous restaurants in the metro New Orleans area. It has been in business continuously for decades. For the sake of the restaurant, I hope that this was an off night. First of all, the restaurant is about 30 minutes out of town on HWy. 90 west. We had reservations. We arrived on time. Seated 45 minutes later, which provided an opportunity to decide about our food therefore we ordered at first go around when the server came around. There was a long delay ~ 45 minutes before we finally received our food. The food was cold. The spaghetti was undercooked, and I don't mean al dente! I mean undercooked. The red sauce was unassuming. The oysters Mosca was bland. Shrimp Mosca was difficult to eat because the shell was stuck to the meat. When fresh shrimp is cooked properly, the shell comes off easily. This was not the case. Natives know this and pay attention to it. The Chicken a la Grande was also not very good. Aside from not being at serving temperature, the chicken was too firm, and the spice mix was weak as if they were using a spice mix from five years ago. Their bread was OK, and the butter was high quality. The best part was the garlic confit that came with the dishes. I guess, some people will object to my rating but someone has to point out when the emperor has no clothes. I will not be going back. read more

The chef soup was a tomato based bean, but was very lacking in flavor that I expected in a good bean soup. It took quite a bit of salt and pepper. The Mimi's chicken was good. but over cooked. To not even bother to at least serve hot dish is ridiculous. The menu advises there will be a wait because each dish is made to order. Out there on HWY 90 is a house, an old house stepped in the tradition of an old school southern Italian Creole. Where Gangsters, commoners, and the high class go to enjoy food, drink and company. This place has been around forever, and every time it just gets better and better. The Oysters Mosca could be your only reason to come here. Fresh Oysters topped with Italian breadcrumbs and cheese baked to perfection. You will be eating the seasoning after you have devoured all of the oysters. It is truly perfection! The rest of the menu is superb, not one bad bite in the whole lot. Please bring cash, or if you forget, there is an ATM there on site. Mosca's Restaurant - Way out the way, but damn is it the best Italian food on the westbank! - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Westwego, Louisiana

It's only because Calvin Trillin, wrote a piece about Mosca's in the New Yorker last year that we found ourselves last week, driving over night-darkened two lane blacktops to find this restaurant in the middle of what seems like nowhere Louisiana. As Calvin Trillin quotes a local friend: " 'Mosca's always had the feel of a neighborhood restaurant, without the neighborhood.' " There is simply nothing else around here but road. It was an adventure, the kind of mysterious road trip that I love. And when we finally arrived and saw this old-timey roadhouse as the only beacon lighting up the dark, I felt ridiculously happy. And believe it or not out here, reservations really are a must . The locals have known about and loved this place since 1946. I don't think of Louisiana as an Italian-food kind of destination but the history and lore surrounding Mosca's was intriguing enough to take a chance. We entered and felt like it was still 1946. It feels frozen in time leaving one to wonder if you've fallen down the rabbit hole and done some time travel. You walk into a main room with a bar, a few tables and an old jukebox filled with oldies crooners. Love! We were then ushered into a second room which is the main dining room. It was little bit like walking into someone's great-aunt's dining room . From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly and immediately brought to our table which was situated near a faux fireplace. I swear it made me feel warmer but in reality the undulating "embers" gave off no heat. What happened here has happened to me in a couple of other Louisiana restaurants and that is, we were waited on by everyone. Rather than being confusing, it simply felt like all the staff was really looking out for us and making sure we felt cared for and attended to. Nothing was duplicated, it's just that everyone made sure our water and wine glasses were filled, that the warm and tasty bread basket was at the ready, and that our every need was being met. You are told upfront that each dish is cooked to order and depending on what you've selected, your meal could take up to 50 minutes to prepare. So sit back, relax and have an appetizer and a drink, no one is rushing you. We ordered wine and what's simply called "an Italian salad" to share. The portions we were told are large and indeed they are. Out came a very big mixed salad which was plenty for two of us. It was iceberg lettuce (which I happen to love) with a variety of raw and pickled veggies. It was simple, a bit different and quite delicious. We heard the oyster casserole was a must, so we ordered it. While the flavors were good it was unfortunately much too salty. This was a disappointment because I think it otherwise would have been a wonderful dish. For my main I ordered a simple bowl of spaghetti with the Mosca's version of a red sauce. For me this can be the true test of a southern Italian-style restaurant. How the pasta is cooked and the flavor of the sauce is often a barometer of authentic goodness...or not. I was also in the mood for some familiar comfort food after a few days that had been heavy on ultra spicy Cajun-Creole delights. While the dish was good, it wasn't amazing. I wondered how Calvin Trillin was waxing poetic about his decades of visiting this restaurant. Yet the restaurant was filled. For us as it turned out, it was less about the food and more about the experience. The menu has stayed the same over the years of Mosca's long existence. There are never any "specials". The menu is what the menu is and always will be. One of the favorites is something called Chicken a la Grande. There are a couple of shrimp options including Shrimp Mosca which is a simple saute version with white wine. There are sausage and peppers, quail dishes and a steak dish. This is not a vegetarian's paradise and therefore does vary from other southern Italian restaurants with which I'm familiar. Nonetheless, this is the tried and true menu for this beloved Lousiana shrine and who am I to quibble with it? We may not have ordered the entrees that put Mosca's on the locals' radar for all these years. I don't know. But it was still a good adventure. Even if the food didn't transport us, the experience in many ways did. It's hard to describe why. It's a place that reminded me of something vaguely very good from my past. That's all I can tell you. The food we ordered was a 3 star experience but this is unfortunately based on one meal in one visit. Clearly, others would strongly disagree. If you come, note that it's cash only. Lots of times, just being in Louisiana and interacting with people who hail from these parts, trumps everything else. This visit counts as memorable on that front. *** JBF America's Classic (1999) *** #10 *** Mosca's is about 30 minutes outside of New Orleans (CBD / French Quarter), and not open on Sundays or Mondays or for lunch, so it took me many trips to New Orleans before being able to fit it into my schedule. This time, in New Orleans for only one night, Mosca's was the only choice. I called about a month in advance to book a reservation which probably wasn't really necessary, give that the restaurant was only about 60% full at 8:30 pm on a Thursday night, but they recommend making reservations and I didn't want to take any chances. Very unassuming, Mosca's is located off the side of the highway, with not much around it. I have no idea how James Beard found this place, but I'm glad that they did. You can definitely tell that this place is an institution, somewhere that has many regulars that have been coming for decades. Old school, they still accept cash only. Everything is served family style and made to order. Don't arrive starving, because it takes 50 minutes or more to prepare the food. We thought that they were exaggerating with the estimate, but it was close to 50 minutes to prepare our oysters and pasta. There was bread on the table and we ordered a salad which came out very quickly, so that was able to tide us over. THE FOOD: Italian Crabmeat Salad - Iceberg lettuce with oil, vinegar, giardinera, and fresh jumbo lump crabmeat - I'm not usually a fan of iceberg lettuce, but the chunks of fresh (not processed, packaged) crabmeat made this and interesting and very good salad. Not something that I was blown away by, but something that I definitely enjoyed. It was dressed with just the right amount of oil and vinegar (not overpowering as some places do, especially when trying to dress up iceberg lettuce). A solid starter while waiting for your meal. Spaghetti Bordelaise (Oil, Butter, and Garlic) with Oysters Mosca (Small) - The oysters were not healthy at all but totally amazing. The small was more than enough for two people when paired with the pasta. They were served almost like a casserole, baked with breadcrumbs and I don't know what other secret ingredients, but they were delicious. They went well with the bordelaise, which on its own might have been a bit plain, but with the oysters was perfect. Very friendly staff that made us feel just like any of the regulars, even though we clearly were not. I'm glad we were finally able to make the trip out to Avondale. I wish it were a bit closer to New Orleans so that we could go more often, but at the same time that's part of the charm! read more

Simply amazing! Old school all the way from the restaurant itself to the staff and most importantly, the food. Oh my, the food. Warning: if you don't like garlic this is not the place for you. The oysters Mosca are truly exceptional. Loaded with oysters and perfectly baked oysters casserole. We were a party of 3 and the large was just right. The chicken a la grande was superb. Garlic and rosemary and cooked to perfection. Chicken was incredibly moist, the skin perfectly crunchy and the juice on the platter made for perfect sopping when all of the chicken disappeared. Our party of 3 got a bird and a half which was just right. What's an Italian meal without pasta? We loved the spaghetti bordelaise. Perfectly cooked and just the right blend of oil, butter and you guessed it, garlic. The servers work as a group and they kept our glasses full, the bread plate loaded and all with smiles and courtesy. This is a classic "locals" place and the 30 minute drive to escape the touristy areas of NOLA was well worth the trip. read more

The Whole Half of Roasted Chicken Been about 30 years since I last ate here and the place looks just like it did back then and perhaps as it did in 1946 when it was established. I ordered the crab salad and the rosemary chicken. The crab salad had small pieces of crab meat and bedsides lettuce was laced with pickled veggie mix. Anyone that is familiar with this knows it is very vinegary, so much so you can't taste anything else when used in salads. Too much vinegar in it. Normally an Italian said has an olive mix. The roasted chicken was very good though on the salty side if you dip bread into the sauce that the chicken pieces sit in. I got the half of chicken and when they say half, it includes the back too. Wait staff was very nice and accommodating. As some of the other reviews noted, prices are on the high end for this type of food. read more

Mosca's is one of those unique, iconic New Orleans restaurants. Old, funky, but always an interesting place to eat. The menu is small and the fare is standard oily Italian, but oh so good when everything is available. This Saturday there was no crab for the crab salad. This was due to the price of crab and not wanting to have to charge customers the exorbitant price. This was too bad, as this is their signature salad. My only real suggestion is that they need to undercook the shrimp a little more so the shells are not so difficult to get off. The pineapple fluff has and always will be one of my favorite desserts anywhere. My complements to Mary Jo Mosca and her staff for hanging in there and carrying on her families tradition. read more

We have gone to New Orleans several times around Christmas and tried to eat at Mosca's, but they are often closed for the holidays. They have several rules of operation and reservations are required. You should call the restaurant or email for reservations. Their system seems to work and they respond. They only take cash. And they are several miles from downtown which means travel needs some planning. They have a note on the website to make sure to arrange transportation home before you come. They are really out in the country in an old building and not much around. If you drive GPS can find the place however, but if you come by Uber or taxi you must plan ahead. They open at 5 pm and we arrived about 15 minutes early. There was one car waiting. Mosca's looked deserted, but when they opened the door at 5 it was soon quite full. It was full by 6 midweek. The place is rustic and unchanged since 1946. The staff are helpful and do an excellent job. But not much help is needed. The menu is short and the service is prompt and helpful. We had salad and bread, good red wine, oysters Mosca and shrimp Mosca and spaghetti. It was wonderful. The oyster dish was excellent and unlike anything I had ever had. The shrimp were also good but very different from the oysters. There is also chicken on the menu but that would have been too much. We had plenty to eat and ate plenty. This was a wonderful evening and we were happy to finally try the place. I would recommend the food and the experience but there are a lot of easier to find restaurants closer. However. Oysters Mosca is one of a kind and worth the effort. read more

Stop being scared to go to Mosca's!!!! There's an ATM on site so grab one of your dearest friends who will share food with you and GO. I've been dying to explore it for years and only pulled the trigger for my birthday this year. It's super casual (jeans and tee shirts seemed to be the dress code) and they do take reservations. Parking is a bit of a mystery (can we park at the house next door? What's off limits?) and wouldn't want to navigate the shell parking lot in heels. Come comfy! The vibe inside is classic Rat Pack Brooklyn meets June Joint meets Boil House. Perfection. They say that it's all family style and the dishes are made to be shared but I could've easily slurped my way through the spaghetti and meatballs. There were 6 of us and we ordered the Oysters Mosca, pasta bordelaise (AMAZING TOGETHER!!!), the spaghetti and meatballs and roasted chicken and potatoes. We also got every dessert they had. The wine selection and server knowledge of it was spotty, but the martinis are ice cold and mixed so fast it'll shock you. Bring cash only and family style made me really anxious and I put off going for a long time. There were so many variables that I didn't know what to expect and I like to know what I'm getting myself into and to have enough money on hand!! Mosca's never disappoints! Let me preface this by, on this visit I went with friends who knew the owner. Service is always on point and the atmosphere is always warm and inviting! Luckily for me, this was the first time I'd ever experience practically every popular plate on the menu! Keep in mind that I was with a few people and we were all sharing! From the Italian crab salad, to oyster Mosca, the chicken A La Grande, shrimp Mosca, spaghetti and meatballs, roasted potatoes and pineapple fluff for dessert! Everything was delicious! If I had to pick my favorites, I'd have say they were the chicken A la Grande, oyster Mosca, and the shrimp Mosca. I usually wouldn't pick chicken when I dine out. But this was different.The chicken comes right off the bone with hints of rosemary and cooked garlic cloves. The shrimp Mosca is like bbq shrimp with a butter garlic pepper dipping sauce for the bread. And the oyster dish is baked with breadcrumbs on top. I can't go any further bc now I want to go! Mosca's is only open for dinner Tuesday-Saturday 5:30-9:30, closed Sunday and Monday. Mosca's was wonderful. We went with a large group of people and ordered oysters and shrimp Mosca, two different chicken dishes, spaghetti and tomato sauce, a large salad. It was plenty of food for everyone. I especially enjoyed the Oyster Mosca. The rest of the dishes were ok but the oysters was delicious. One thing to note is the restaurants only accepts cash and it was loud. That's understandable because everything is served family style. Mosca's is a must visit. Opened in 1946, things are obviously done pretty much they were back then. Yes, it was an old gangster hide away and looks like it could easily be again. Nondescript, white building sits on the side of I-90. They take reservations, but are only open 5:30-9:30 Wednesday thru Saturday. Not taking any chances, we arrived around 5:00 and waited because they start taking reservations when they open and we wanted to dine that evening. We knew it was 5:30 when a priest pulled up looking to get a quick meal before Saturday evening mass, two friendly cats walked up to the front to greet the owner and get a free bite to eat. The door unceremoniously unlocks from behind and we wanted in. The interior looks unchanged from the decades. Jukebox plays classic songs, the bar is well stocked. Loud air conditioners rattle, a dining area that could be any roadside restaurant in Louisiana, walls covered with smiling celebrities who've dined here. Martha Stewart smiling in one photo. If it's good enough for Martha, it must be good. Mismatched dishes set the tables. You have to remind yourself you're here for the food. The wait staff was very friendly and full of southern hospitality. We ordered a Chianti, wine is very good and reasonably priced. Bread arrives at the table. I think my favorite kind of restaurants are the ones where they tell you what you're going to eat. No lengthy menu, just short and sweet offering the fare that people have been coming here to eat for decades. Her suggestions for the four of us were perfect. Served family style, we started with a double sized Italian salad, made simply with wine and vinegar. Lots of marinated vegetables and fresh grape tomatoes. It was a great start. Next to arrive were the oysters Mosca's, the shrimp Mosca's, pasta bordelaise and their signature chicken a la grande. The oysters Mosca's were oysters broiled with bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese, oil and garlic. it wasn't bad, I'm just not a big fan of oysters and there were loads of bread crumbs coating it all. The shrimp Mosca's were large in shell shrimp in Italian seasoning with lots of butter. My favorite was the amazing chicken a la grande. Garlic again features in this hearty dish cooked in a skillet with rosemary and white wine. The pasta bordelaise was the ideal compliment to the meal, pretty much simply an agile e olio. Was delightful to dine Italian and not have everything covered in tomato sauce! The gravies were rich and hearty, using the bread to mop up. The meal was delightful, we ended it with coffee and their only dessert that night, a light pineapple fluff. The combination of Italian and Cajun flavor was a treat without being overbearing as sometimes Cajun seasoning can be. Leisurely paced and thoroughly enjoyable! This place right here! I heard about it through an episode of "Feed Phil" and thought it'd be a fun dinner trip out of New Orleans. It far exceeded our expectations. As I'm sure others have mentioned, it's a pretty nondescript, side-of-the highway joint. And, it's a substantial drive if your staying in NOLA. But, don't let the looks deceive and the drive is very much worth it. The food, drinks, and (inside) ambience were all worth it! The martinis were A+ and we kept them flowing. The oysters, which we used as a substitute for meatballs, were out of this world. Hands down, the best Italian meal, if not the best meal in general, that I've ever had. The price came out on the steep end, which is to be expected for the extremely high quality of food and service we received (as well as the number of martinis we ordered). MMMMM wow so fun and delish! Entrees are served family style so bring a krewe of 4 or more. Salads are delish and HUGE! The sazeracs are really fine so bring a designated driver. Drove out last night for my friend's birthday dinner; apparently, there was an article about Mosca's in a recent New Yorker and as yuppies, we are required to do as it says (also applies to the New York Times). Fun fact: the first school I ever taught at is located only 3 minutes from there. I had no idea when I made the trek past Avondale to Waggaman for 6 months that there was non-fast food in the area. The drive wasn't so bad, although I felt vindicated that it took half the time to get back via Huey P. and Jeff Hwy, as I suggested, than the 35+ minutes via the expressway. We called at 545 to reserve for 630 and strolled in right on time. With all the implications of mob/mafia ties, I expected a swarthier atmosphere. Instead, the clapboard house is clean and sparse, with their framed James Beard award featured prominently among other clippings and a few black and white photographs. The house was pretty quiet on a Tuesday night, with about half or less of the tables seated. We were quickly seated and brought menus and toasted bread with pats of butter. After a short peruse, we ordered: - A bottle of the house chianti: $26, mellow and warmed the three of us up. - Chicken a la grande: 1/2 a chicken sautéed with rosemary and special seasoning, whole garlic cloves and white wine. Lots of butter to be seen rising above the sauce, but it was moist, with flavorful skin, and soft, caramelized globules of garlic. Delicious and recommended by the New Yorker article (as were the window treatments, and ATM, and bathroom...) - Spaghetti and meatballs: A misnomer-this was a large platter of angelhair pasta, not spaghetti, topped with roasted tomato marinara and 2 large meatballs. Hearty and filling, with simple and satisfying flavors. The sauce was perfect, not too sour, not overly sweet, and smelling of many spices. - Roasted potatoes: Huge peeled chunks of potato roasted to an extremely tender consistency. The texture was almost too soft, considering you couldn't even stab a piece with a fork without it falling into mush. Still, a good accompaniment to the chicken, and absorbed the flavorful sauce. Service was prompt and fairly attentive; when we asked for more bread, she had already put more in to be toasted, and the food came out clearly prepared to order and piping hot. For the three of us, the total came out to about $77, split among 2 as it was a birthday. A little pricey for the amount of food actually ordered, but we were all full and satisfied with the meal. CASH ONLY. Closed Mondays. 50+ minute wait for food (as warned on the menu and the website). Pretty good. I'd come back. read more

Be aware that they are cash only. The main dining area is to the right. Nothing fancy, just a place where you can eat some good food. It didn't take long to decide what we wanted. We started with a large bowl of the Italian crab salad. Like rest of the meal, it is served family style. So you wait your turn as the bowl makes its trip around the table and then help yourself to the salad. There was plenty of crab meat in the salad. The entrees were a large pan of their signature Oysters Mosca, a bowl of Chicken à la Grand, and a platter of Spaghetti with a Bordelaise sauce. All the dishes heavy with garlic. The family style presentation worked nicely. The only dish not served family style was the desserts, a piece of cheesecake & the Pineapple Fluff. Even so, everyone of us was given a spoon to taste the desserts as they circled around the table. What can I say that hasn't been repeated in many reviews? The meal was great. Service was all you would expect. Staff all helped each other keeping the water glasses full, the fresh hot bread coming, and making sure we had enough of what we wanted. Things to know about Mosca's before you go: They are strictly cash only It takes around 50 minutes to get your food The restauraunt can get VERY loud Portions are huge You usually need reservations The menu is limited I find Moscas to be expensive for what you get. I have mainly tried the spaghetti and meatballs. The red gravy is good, but the meatballs are dense. The pasta was angle hair cooked al dente. I have also had the crab salad which was mostly iceberg lettuce tossed in a light house dressing and sprinkled with crab meat. It tasted better than it looked but I was not overly impressed. Supposidly the oysters and chicken la mosca are amazing and I am told that they would change my mind about the place. If I come again, I will have to give the chicken a try (I dont eat oysters). For me, the food is not good enough to justify the drive, cost, and time, but it is the noise factor that definitely kills it for me. It is so loud you cannot talk to the person sitting next to you without shouting and only further adding to the earsplitting noise. 50 minutes of staring at the people you are with and smothered by the reverberation of ever conversation in the room is not my idea of a nice meal. read more

Mosca's Restaurant - Moscas - Cajun/Creole Near Me - Westwego, Louisiana

I recently returned to Mosca's for an early dinner after not having eaten here in a few years. The pasta and chicken is still as good as ever while the quality of the oyster's Mosca and shrimp Mosca had dropped from my last visit and were overcooked. We were the second table in the restaurant yet somehow we managed to get the last of the "good" oysters that night so that raised my concern. The biggest issue they seem to have now is the extreme slowness and confusion of the waitstaff. Our meal started when they brought ONE bread roll to our table and it was the last one we saw all night. It then took excessively long times to receive drinks after ordering them when we were only one of two tables in the restaurant but as more customers arrived the service got exponentially more slow. I started out drinking water and then towards the end of my meal I wanted a beer so after putting my order in with two of the many different servers that came by our table I NEVER received it! I was also extremely unhappy that they no longer brew iced tea and have gone the LAZY route of only selling nasty bottled iced tea. I've never had such issues in the past and it wasn't nearly as crazy crowded as my past experiences so I'm not sure what the problem was that night. Sadly I've got to yank one star away for these issues. It is a bit of a haul to get here from New Orleans so these issues will certainly make me think twice before I make the journey out here again. I've always liked this place but when I think twice about it I have to consider that for the price any potential Mosca's diner needs to consider there is a whole lot of stiff competition in the city these days for our dining dollars and there are some great Italian places charging similar prices for much better ambiance a whole lot closer to home.
