I was in the area and looked on Yelp before settling on Mother for lunch because it is a vegetarian restaurant, (with lots of vegan options!) which I like to support. This is a cool joint with outdoor and indoor seating, and blackboard walls with unique chalk art. I like that the silverware and water are self serve and they don't hand out plastic cups and cutlery. After reading some reviews, I ordered the chicken fried mushroom po boy and the nut burger to share with my colleague. Both of these dishes are new to me and I believe both are vegan to begin with, but I added a slice of gruyere to the nut burger, after already ordering. The woman at the counter was very nice and let me add the add on, even while others were in line. The chicken fried mushroom po boy was incredible! I wasn't able to get a great picture because I couldn't stop eating. It's got a little bit of spice, but not too much and a very creamy aioli to calm things down. I never thought I'd enjoy it so much, but I'm craving another! A total 5/5! That being said, I was not a fan of the nut burger at all. It was sloppy, mushy, oddly spicy (I think this was because of the mustard) and was lacking in texture and flavor. It literally fell apart after one bite. It does not taste like a beyond meat burger, nor does it taste like a veggie, black bean, or rice burger. It's neither here nor there and leaves much to be desired. That being said, it is healthy. I rate it a 2.5/5 stars. All in all, service was good, prices were reasonable, the po boy was excellent, and the vibe was cool. I would return, but I would not order the nut burger again. read more

We came in when we were in the area because we were hopeful about the vegan options I read about but feel like they didn't have much to offer. We both had the vegan version of the po-boy and oh boy, it wasn't my thing. Maybe it's just me but it made me feel gross, not much too it except dripping fried greasiness. I mean, sure it makes me happy when any place has something vegan on the menu but meh. Mother is across the street from District 30/Dive Bar. Waiter service, but you pay at the cash register when you're done eating. The space is small and narrow. We came in for an early dinner, so there was no wait time. I started off with the carrot cantaloupe water, which was light and refreshing. My friend and I both ordered the Chicken Fried Mushroom Po-Boy (Shaved Iceberg, Pickles). The bread was soft, but it didn't hold the contents of the sandwich too well. The mushrooms were crispy. The pickles were too sour. The sandwich is not something I will order again, it was just meh. We ended the meal with the Brown Butter and Sea Salt Cookies. Yes, I liked them. I didn't find them to be life-changing or anything though. The pasta looks yummy, from looking at pictures, so I'll try that next time. Best vegetarian/vegan food in town :). I've tried plenty of other ones thanks to my vegan friends, but this is the only place where I had to question if it was really vegetarian or not. I've heard about Mother for a long time and have never made the trip over. A good friend who happens to be vegan was visiting from China this week, and that seemed like the right time to find out what all the hype was about. We arrived at Mother at around 1:30pm on Thursday and it was PACKED! The entire patio was full, and the only seating left was at the counter. I didn't mind, though. We were here for the food! We both ordered the Western Burger off the seasonal menu, which was made with a nut patty, onion rings, BBQ sauce and Gouda cheese. I was surprised at how fast the food arrived. I got my burger quicker than my beer came, which wasn't expected! The beer was local, too, which was a plus. They had a Rice Lager from Urban Roots available, which was ideal, because I wanted something on the lighter side to go with my food. The nut patty was hearty and delicious, though it didn't hold together as well as I'd like. I don't fault Mother; it's hard to get the right consistency with most veggie burgers. That said, what fell apart attached to the cheese, and pulling off pieces of cheesy, nutty goodness wasn't the worst way to enjoy the burger. All in all, it was a delicious meal, and a burger that I gobbled down pretty quickly. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying out more of their seasonal options. I want to lie and say this place sucks so I can always walk in and get a table - but that would be morally wrong and plain not cool. I happened to find this little gem (by yours truly...thanks Yelp!) because they have kombucha on tap. I used to hate kombucha. Something about the "mother" and all the billions of living "organisms". Whatever. Anyway, now I'm a fan and they have it on tap. It just so happened to be the Man Friend's birthday, and he's a real fan of kombucha. So Friday night, off we went. I want to correct a few things about location. I was sort of expecting Ella, but walked up to a small spot with long tables on the inside and a quaint patio out front. I actually like that it's a smaller, more casual restaurant than the Grange and Ella. Love those places.....but not every Friday night. This place, you can walk up in shorts and flip flops and no big deal. Unpretentious. Score. It was a warm summer night. We were seated out front in a few minutes. Inside was packed. The patio was busy. The streets were bustling with pedestrians, the bars were starting to put their red velvet ropes out.....the energy of our little "cowtown" (don't fling a cow patty at me...) was contagious! You know what I'm talking about. Everyone is out, the vibe is electric and people are happy (or just insane). I personally love the location and think it adds to the charm of the place. THEN food started coming out and I figured Jesus was back there cooking. Here's what happened: - Blistered shishito peppers - salty, big and blistered. Not too hot. Served with a wedge of lemon. I could've eaten ten more bowls. - Jalapeno cornbread - this totally proves that Jesus is in the back cooking, because....I don't know how this tastes so damn good, it just does. Two little cornbread cakes of sweet/spiciness drizzled with honey. Kinda dessert. Kinda not. Allllll kinds of deliciousness. - Farro and peach salad - kale, cucumber, peaches, a vinaigrette and a creamy white soft cheese. I can't really explain this. It's a salad. But it's filling. It's a salad.....but it's deliciously filling with chewy farro, fresh veggies, amazing soft cheese and BOOM!...sweet peaches. I loved this salad so much, we came back Saturday night and ordered it again. But this time I protected my salad with a 2nd fork and didn't share. - Squash Latkes - OMG. If I wasn't already full from the farro and peach salad, I could've given the latkes more attention. This is definitely a one-plate meal. The latkes are rich and delicious, almost like comfort food. Not almost.....it is. The vegetables are cooked perfectly. Flavors, spot on. But order this dish if you are STARVING and haven't stuffed yourself with shishito peppers and farro. I'm coming back (again and again), specifically so I can order just this. - Fried Green Tomato sandwich - this was sold out our first Friday night visit. So when they had it Saturday (and I was busy protecting my farro and peaches), the Man Flame ordered this and we learned exactly why it sold out - it's freakin' GOOD. Fried, crunchy tomatoes wedged between a ciabatta with pesto and other Godly ingredients. Texture and flavor. I'll have to order my own next time. I already hit the max parking rate at the nearby garage, so I figured I might as well check this place out for dinner after spending the day at the capitol. It sounds like they change their menu regularly, and when I went everything was Italian themed. Despite the menu being fairly small, there were lots of good items to choose from. I ended up getting the gnocchi, which came in a mushroom bolognese sauce. The gnocchi itself was great, and the sauce was really excellent. I read this in some reviews, but be warned that the portion sizes can be small. I was deciding between getting the gnocchi and the "meatball" sub, and regretted my decision a little bit when my food actually came. The gnocchi portion was pretty small, while the person at the table next to mine got the sub and it looked huge! The servers are very nice and helpful, so if you're worried about this, you can definitely ask them for help when deciding what to get. I've been to Mother several times for lunch on weekdays. While it is ALWAYS crowded, the line tends to move pretty quickly. Food: My favorite items are the coin fries and their soups. The coin fries have a fantastic texture, saltiness and the smoked mayo is bomb dot com. I could truly eat BUCKETLOADS of these. As for their soups, they are always unique and full of flavor! I've had the po'boy sandwich before and found it a tad too bready for my liking. I'd love to try their ravioli, but I can never quite bring myself to pay $18 or so for it. Atmosphere: Very cool decor and I enjoy being able to see into the kitchen--looks clean and bustling! I must admit it isn't super intuitive to know when/where to grab your own water and utensils. The menu is not long and, yes, everything is vegetarian but this place is packed with happy eaters for good reason. The dishes are creative, attractive and delicious. I do believe, as a chef, you must work harder to make great food without meat. The server said everyone swoons over the chicken fried mushrooms and most people do order it. Accompanied by a smear of remoulade sauce and half a juicy lemon, this dish tasted much like the fried oysters you find in the South. But, to be blunt, just about everything tastes good fried. I think less batter would let the shrooms shine. I mostly tasted batter. The star of the night was the chile verde dish served in a hot iron skillet. It was gorgeous, extremely hearty and bursting with flavor. And the paper thin radish slices gave certain bites an unexpected slight bitterness that kept things interesting as I cleaned my plate (or skillet). Stopped by this gem after a long day at the State Capitol. It did not disappoint! Ordered the Chicken Fried Mushrooms and the Carrot Nut Burger. Small inside, so I can imagine it being uncomfortable at a busy time. We didn't have that problem. Parking is available all over the streets and you get a nice view of downtown Sacramento if you park a few blocks away. Will definitely be back here whenever we're in town! read more

I had the cookie the fried zucchini sandwich and the chicken fried mushroom all amazing! Cons: parking sucks but its downtown so it's to be expected. NOT great customer service. It feels like an exclusive club when you walk in and the staff give you the once over. When they lift "the velvet rope" to take your order it's like they are doing you a favor. I grabbed a seat just as a party left just to be approached by staff and accused of not ordering. when the staff finally believed that I had ordered and was waiting for food they asked if I could move so a larger party could sit at my table. They did find me smaller accommodations but the whole ordeal left me feeling icky and annoyed. Verdict: the food is good enough to ignore the annoying pretentious vibe. It seems like they switch up the menu every so often. Maybe every month. The two of us waited for about 30 minutes. There's only about roughly 7 tables. Kimchi farro was the best dish we ordered. Wasn't too spicy for me and I'm super sensitive to spice. There is something special going on at Mother! This is a five star choice for vegans and non vegans alike. Their menu is inventive and the food they are slinging out of that kitchen is simply delicious. I had the Brussels sprouts and also the lasagna. Both were fabulous. Also fabulous was Tiffany, who cheerfully took my order and made some great recommendations. She was super fast, knowledgeable about the menu and gracefully dodged patrons and other wait staff to bring me my order super quick. She also seems to have the power to chill beer down to optimum temperature in minutes. All in all Mother is a superb place for dinner and is a must try for all vegans. This place has closed, which is an absolute travesty, so consider this a eulogy for the best vegetarian food I've ever found in my thirty years of living, anywhere. I've been to fancy ultra-bougie $25-per-appetizer reservation-only vegetarian spots, I've been to weird hipster holes-in-the-wall in weird parts of towns, I've had the various mom-and-pop hole-in-the-walls where folks claim the food is godlike, and all of them have paled in comparison to the majority of the Mother Menu on an average day. I'm sure you've had food epiphanies before, where you try a new set of flavors or a new thing and it completely re-contextualizes your tastes; I had multiple at Mother. Mushroom Po'Boy; The Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookies (especially fresh out of the oven; some weird stack thing made from cauliflower that I still don't know the name of; a cucumber-limeade that I only saw once; I could go on and on, but the easiest way to end this sentence is to state that out of all the times I went to Mother, I was genuinely only unsatisfied with two dishes, ever, and both were dishes that were distinctly outside of my range. I was interested in trying them because Mother, repeatedly, managed to make me enjoy something I thought I didn't. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see Mother close; I was stoked when it was announced as opening, I took a picture of the door during construction, I went there on the soft opening with my girlfriend, and we had dinner there weekly (sometimes twice or thrice) for a few years before moving away. Even then, we still made our best efforts to get Mother at least once or twice per year. All things must pass. And although Mother's time has now passed, I'll always have a special place in my heart for the restaurant I was able to take hardcore carnivores to impress them on the possibilities of vegetarian food. I'm a meat-eater, so eating and loving a vegetarian place seemed really foreign to me. I had a friend visit who is vegetarian and I heard excellent reviews of Mother so we went. I had the nut burger and was surprisingly really full afterwords. I ordered it with cheese but you can get it without, so it would be vegan. I also had a squash sandwich over the summer, but that was a seasonal item, also very good. If you go at lunch there is a rush, and the restaurant itself is very small so know that there may not be a place to sit and you may have to wait. Mother is definitely worth the wait if you have the time. It's on K street which has no parking, so that is an issue. Even if you love meat you'll still love Mother. read more

Here's the pros: the Strawberry Farro Salad was really good. If I knew how to make their dressing at home, I'd be so down. My girlfriend had the Chile Verde, which I also found really good. I experienced several cons that cost a star: the menu was a bit confusing, a bit expensive, and for a vegetarian place, I'd expect more vegan options. My first choice wasn't available vegan. Tasty and Filling! I ordered the Nut Burger () and the brussel sprouts. Both were really delicious. The two items together were more than I could eat and I can really eat. The burger seemed like it had a fair amount of cumin in it because it has a robust, savory flavor that tasted quite 'meaty'. I got a side of ketchup because meatless burgers tend to need a little acidic oomph but this burger actually tasted better without it so I'm glad I didn't slather the ketchup all over the burger from the beginning. I could only eat about 1/2 of the burger because it is quite filling. I ate about 2/3rds of the brussels but I probably should have stopped at 1/2 because now I'm overly full. But they are sooooooooo good. They are quite the sweet little treat. I guess they were my dessert. This place is pretty small and I was worried that I wouldn't find a seat but the girl at the counter said somehow it always works out" and don't you know that a table opened up right as she gave me my number :-) And I arrived at noon which seemed to be peak time. Whenever I go to a restaurant I'm often surprised when the veggie dishes I order have more flavor than the meat dishes. I probably shouldn't be by now because veggies are delicious! That's why I was pretty excited to come to Mother. A restaurant full of vegetarian dishes! But vegetarian doesn't always mean fresh and tasty dishes. Sometimes it means overly fried dishes. I ordered the potato and butternut squash latkes; they were thick and so fried it was almost black. The veggies that came with it were delicious though and was more along the lines of what I was expecting. I also got the chicken fried mushrooms since I saw a lot of reviews about it. A mistake on my part considering how fried the latkes were. I think there's probably other dishes I could have gotten here that would be more to my liking. Also, apparently you can't sit at a table and wait for your friends to arrive. A lady was doing that and one of the waiters came over to tell her she had to wait in the waiting area. I can see that rule being useful when the restaurant is packed to help with turnover of tables, but there were only two tables total occupied at that point. So far so good. I decided to give this place a try since I have heard so many great things. So I decided to order the Chicken Fried Mushrooms. It's Vegan and it's amazing. The aioli sauce it comes with like literally puts the stank on that shit. Its located on K Street near the Crest theatre. The decor in this place is so cute. I love that its a place to go that is more on the casual, sit down or take it to go type place. It's kinda fast food, but not really. I like it. Every time I have come here it has been busy. I keep going back to my Chicken Fried Mushrooms. I am like ridiculously addicted to them. It's good to have a place that serves delicious plant-based/vegan dishes that doesn't feel like you're in some juice bar type place where people are going to judge you because you may or may not consume animal products. It feels really good when you come in. Like you're getting some good ass home-cooked food, that doesn't look or taste like you are eating grass or like its some shit you played in and rolled around in as a kid. Here is a tip, even if you don't like mushrooms. ORDER the Chicken Fried Mushrooms! It's different. Like you know when people make the joke, "oh it tastes like chicken" Well, it most certainly does.
