This is a pretty small coffee House. Very busy. You have to wait a long time to get your coffee even if there are not many people. We tried 3 different types of coffee and for my taste they are very acidic. We were there for about an hour and I saw many people parading, most of them buying some kind of iced coffee and smothies. I also saw a client who ordered online and jusy payed and tool their coffee, is good they have this service for people in a hurry. About the variety of bakery is very little (they had just a couple of Donuts and mufins and 2 pastries) I do not know if that is because was Sunday. This little place is such a gem! I've come a few times to get some work done on my computer and enjoy a morning treat. I'm always searching for the perfect almond latte, and Mountain Grounds makes it so well - super creamy and not burnt at all. If you're staying, you can have it in a mug. They also offer delicious pour-over, hot or iced, and tasty breakfast sandwiches. The staff are really friendly and kind. Last time I came here, I took out my laptop and noticed that as soon as I did, the guy working there changed the music to a chill instrumental playlist, which was more conducive to working. They seemed to know a lot of the other folks coming in for coffee, which gave it a great community feel. read more

I've only been to MG a couple of times, but i'ts always been a great experience. Today i went in and pulled up right in front, Meg came out with a big smile, put her mask on and took my order while i sat in my truck. I ordered my iced coffee and a breakfast sandwich on a bagel (yum!). She took my payment then and there on an iPad, walked in and returned minutes later with everything. We had some small talk about her/my day and the weather and such.. This places customer service and staff has ALWAYS been on point, keep it up MG staff! read more

I came here today for breakfast and Mountain Grounds definitely lived up to their 5 star rating! I love that they didn't ask us to pay until after we ate and drank our coffee. It makes you feel like they want you to stick around. Which is the complete opposite of big coffee shops that just want to take your money and make you leave with a coffee which may or may not be the correct order. We ordered a couple of their ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches (if you're not super hungry and looking for something small to eat with your coffee it's a good size and tasty too), shot of espresso (smooth and really nice flavor),creme brûlée latte (what caught my eye after reading other reviews and I would get this again, but not an everyday drink...remember that since they have to torch it, you need to drink it there). Lastly, we ordered an iced chai (order the house chai). The inside of the shop itself is small with limited seating, there are a couple of outdoor tables, as well as a few single chairs scattered around outside. Because of the size of the shop, I'm not sure if I would recommend this as a working or studying location. It was refreshing to receive such amazing costumer service. I often like to start out the new year with positive thoughts towards the coming year. That includes positive Yelp reviews for well deserving places. Last year it was Timeless Coffee in Oakland. This year it's the more obscure, yet no less impressive Mountain Grounds located in tiny Martinez. We came to Mountain Grounds because we like supporting small family run businesses as well as trying out new places. From the onset, I wasn't nearly as impressed as I was hoping to be. Our soy latte that we ordered was a little weak, with an absurd amount of dry foam that wasn't blended into the espresso at all. When the owner asked us if we liked it, my sweetie spoke her mind and said it wasn't very good. He promptly remade us a proper latte without even asking. He was training a new employee, and mentioned to her that soy is a little more difficult to foam properly. That's the kind of leadership you like to see, leading by example and doing it correctly yourself. The second latte, needless to say was much better. More along the lines of what you'll get at Peet's which is pretty good, just not the artisan latte art totin' brew you'll find at higher end coffee shops. Which in fact is probably the only thing that Mountain Grounds lacks. Although on our latest stop in here, John was practicing his latte art and it's lookin' pretty darn good. Normally the word "passionate" is thrown around so much that it loses it's luster. To see passion in action, see John behind the counter whipping up drinks on a whim just because he can. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so happy to be doing what they love. He is so excitedly hyper to make drinks that I suspect he is mainlining caffeine from the time he rolls outta bed in the morning, to the time he goes to bed, yet not necessarily to sleep. If you like finishing your drinks in record time, order the iced chai latte. I swear that's one of the easiest things to drink. It goes down so tasty smooth, you'll be finished with this before you even realize it. Don't bother with a small size, jump right up to the large or you'll regret it. Sure, it's just boxed chai tea but I've never been able to get mine to taste nearly as good. The Ethiopian Yirgacheffe pour over is maybe my favorite coffee I've had anywhere. It certainly ranks right up there with anything I've had from Ritual, Timeless, Blue Bottle, etc. The best part is it's a steal at $2.75 or so for a medium. Probably a full dollar cheaper than most places that do pour over. Make sure you get a frequent buyer card to redeem for a free drink once you have it all filled out. You're gonna need it! The enthusiasm, attention to customer happiness, and fair prices are a few of the reasons I'll make the short drive down to this little cafe rather than brew up a just as delicious Nespresso at home. One morning I was in major need of coffee. I knew this place was located over here but had never had the opportunity or need to stop in. This time I really wanted and needed some coffee. I ordered my usual Americano at the counter. It's super tiny inside. There's a few seats inside and some more tables and chairs outside. There's more room outside to stretch out with your morning joe. There a small condiment bar. There wasn't any half and half out so I asked. Not sure if you always have to ask or if they wre just refilling the canister back there. There were no other creamers out either. They also only had raw sugar or Splenda. This was one of the strongest cups of coffee I've had in a long time. Flavor was good. It didn't have that sourness that you get from Starbucks coffee. But definite strong flavor. I was pretty excited about a coffee spot opening on Alhambra, however, I was even more excited after my first Americano! The coffee is amazing! I've had Blue Bottle, I've had Philz, but I have to say the coffee here at Mountain Grounds by far is the best I've ever had. John the owner has a local bakery that deliveries fresh pastries every morning, they are to die for. I personally love the blueberry muffins. After my first experience here I had to share my new amazing find with my husband... He is now hooked! He refuses to spend anymore of his moolah at Starbucks. The atmosphere is welcoming, the owner is passionate and knowledgable about what he does. This is the way coffee should be. MG coffee shop was recommended to me by a stranger I met in Martinez. I'm picky about my coffee; so much so that I am loathe to drink coffee other than that which I brew at home. To make my brew, I grind the beans fresh for every cup, I use an espresso machine to pressure spray the ground beans and no plastic touches my coffee/beans at any time during the brew process. And of course, I'm quite picky about the beans I use to brew my coffee. The resulting coffee I get at home surpasses in quality any coffee I've had from a commercial establishment........ie, Peet's, Starbucks, et al. I get my coffee at home.......my way! I mention this only as a standard of comparison to MG's coffee. The guy who recommended MG coffee to me raved about it. So much so that I had to drop by MG's.......right then.......to check out said MG brew. I was prepared to be disappointed. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! The coffee at MG I tried, a caramel flavored brew, surpassed in taste/quality ANY coffee I've thus far had.........it's exceedingly smooth, with almost no unpleasant after taste. It's very low in acidity and had enough caramel flavor to allow me to enjoy said flavor, but not so much as to mask the quite delicious coffee flavor. MG prices are reasonable, too. Saturday morning and Martinez is still sleepy. Just a few cars are rolling down Alhambra Avenue, but the folks at Mountain Grounds were there serving up some of the best coffee I've ever had. First of all, you walk in and a bunch of happy coffee people are talking shop about the differences between an Aeropress and Drip coffee. They're joking around and smiling and bringing you in on the happiness. It's worth visiting the shop just to meet the gang. Then, you get your coffee and it's rich and full bodied without being too strong or bitter. There's turkey art in your latte foam and everyone has a good laugh over it. There's no doubt about it - this coffee is crafted. Each cup is prepared with the care of people who really love their jobs. This is the place that other coffee shops dream of being. read more

I went to Mountain Grounds for the first time today. I had heard good things and was not disappointed. The coffee there is really good. I think their "house" coffee that they give if you don't specify is a medium roast. I drink my coffee black and this coffee was perfect for that. Very smooth. I also like that their baked goods are not huge. I like baked goods but don't often order them from cafés because I don't want to max out my daily calories on a giant muffin. Their blueberry muffin is just the right size for a morning treat. It had yummy crumbly things on top too. The staff are on the young side and seem like they are truly having fun at work, which is nice to see. The only negative comment that I have is that the shop is on the small side, which really limits what they can offer in terms of food. Overall, a pleasant early morning experience. read more

Really friendly service, really great coffee, this place deserves a sixth star! My wife wanted to try the popular creme brûlée coffee, which I will admit was worth the trip. The latte was not too sweet and light like you would imagine custard in coffee form. They flame the sugared top to create a very authentic creme brûlée look and taste. You need this in your life. I also ordered the house made chai tea. I got the big size over ice. Very tasty and also not too sweet. We also ate the breakfast sandwiches which were small but tasty. My wife was still a little hungry but I was full. Everything we had at Mountain Grounds was delicious, carefully made, and served by a friendly staff that seemed genuinely interested that we have a great time and enjoy ourselves. The extra shot of espresso added some bold kick with no bitter taste. I love the outdoor seating and the service is authentically wonderful. If your a fan of Blue Bottles or Philz coffee, then you will LOVE Mountain Grounds! Tucked away in a strip mall in Martinez, is a tiny little coffee shop packing some BIG flavor. Freshly brewed by the cup coffee, with unique flavors such as Smore's (Mocha with graham crackers and toasted marshmallows) and my favorite as of right now now, Creme Brule Latte which they will torch right in front of you. The coffee is neither bitter or too acidic but very smooth and robust and not overly sweet. Very nice crew. Weak and PRICEY brew. It's nice to have a local coffee shop again, but their single-cup pour over style makes for a very weak cup of coffee, and at $4 per cup... meh. 2 stars. But an extra star because the barista is nice... even if he does bring his kids to work with him, taking up 2 of the 3 available tables. :-/ UPDATE: As for owner's weird sales pitch below... jeez. I don't care what techniques you use if the coffee still ends up yucky. I don't need to be educated on how to make the perfect cup, it's not as hard as you make it out to be. And we *tried* to sit down, but your son was busy drawing paper dolls. It's not my job to make sure your customers have a place to sit. All I wanted was a simple cup of coffee! I was in town for business. My first stop is always a local coffee place (because I've tasted Starbucks and Peet's, so why not give the little guy a shot?). It was small ... closet small. But I wasn't there to practice ballroom dancing. A cursory perusal of the menu board (in chalk, of course!) revealed a conspicuous lack of pretense and trendy Italian-sounding crap; they did coffee, not milkshakes. I ordered my usual: coffee...strong, black and mysterious. The beautiful woman with the lovely body art made me feel like I belonged. Her charm was genuine, not forced. She made me want to come back. Tried this place this morning and i loved it!!! My 5 yr old tried a coffe cake muffin and really enjoyed it..I like ice coffee drinks so I asked the girl working what she reccomended she said the tuxedo. OMG!!!!!!! to die for I love it so much I might retire my coffee maker ;) what I would like to see is something like a PUPachino (for our friendly fur-baby who loves going for car rides) another amazing feature MG offers is a "txt in your order" I love this for when I have my kids sleeping and cant get out of the car.
