Limited Street Parking The food made up for the wait time but it was very long. This place was packed, we came in no reservation and the wait time they told us just kept getting longer. We eventually were able to get in, there is a small space to wait with snacks though. Once our table was almost ready the host allowed us to order and once sat it came almost right away. We ordered the la-xi chicken with less spice, this has small crispy chicken pieces and lot of peppers, had to go in and pick out the little pieces. Truthfully wish it was less pepper and more chicken especially $23.95. The mapo tofu was delicious the perfect numbing sensation that I love. A must try dish was the fish fillet with crispy rice. This was $34 but it is perfect for cold day. They bring this dish out pour the soup on top and let it boil until the crispy gets cooked. We got the green beans as well, pretty standard nothing special. We got a little discount as well, I think for a late night special. The entire meal came with tea and the restaurant had calm setting with wooden interior

Love how immersive this restaurant is! The atmosphere is beautiful and peaceful even while being bustling. The interior design is so well thought and adds to the ambiance of the entire establishment. We went on a weekday night at around 7PM and only had to wait around 20 minutes which was not bad at all especially since we got to enjoy some nice hot tea while we sat and waited. Service was efficient and every dish was dynamite! I was a little disappointed by the fish since I had mistakenly thought it was a different fish but it was still yummy. Highlights were the fried rice with special szeuchan greens and the mapo tofu!

Mountain House delivers bold, unapologetic Sichuan flavors, and when the dishes hit, they really hit. We ordered a wide spread, and several dishes stood out. The mapo tofu, stir-fried Chinese long beans, and sautéed lily bulbs with snow peas were all excellent--each easily five-star dishes. The mapo tofu had deep, numbing heat and great balance, while the vegetables were perfectly cooked, flavorful, and refreshing amid the heavier dishes. The swinging pork belly with garlic sauce and dumplings in chili oil were solid starters, full of aroma and spice. The la-zi chicken delivered exactly what you'd expect--crispy pieces buried under dried chilies with serious heat. We also tried a beef tripe dish and a shrimp dish loaded with red peppers, both clearly authentic and spice-forward, though better suited for those who truly enjoy intense Sichuan flavors. The fried rice with pickled veggies and bacon was comforting and helped balance out the meal. Where the experience fell short was service. A few items were forgotten and had to be reminded multiple times, which disrupted the pacing of the meal. Staff were polite, but the lag and inconsistency kept this from being a five-star visit. Overall, Mountain House is a great destination if you like Sichuan cuisine.

Mountain House is one of the special spots among Chinese restaurants in Boston. Starting with their modern decor, their emphasis on the details, their take on traditional and contemporary Szechuan cuisine, and their tremendously synchronized service between FOH and BOH - all that is unusual for what we know as Chinese cuisine everywhere. Calling them a good spot is such an understatement as I've recommended them to anyone who asks for an amazing Chinese spot to visit. Yes, they are part of my top three Chinese spots in this whole area. I would never hesitate to visit if anyone asked me to join them. Why? Each culinary detail has much thought and technique. Every step is done for a reason and displayed for those with keen eyes to see. It makes me feel like I've been ported to the imperial kitchen tasting dishes that are being perfected for the emperor himself. I really don't need to elaborate on how good the food is. Rather, I will let you judge it for yourself based on their loyal following, the sometimes ridiculous wait times, and the fact that this restaurant is NEVER empty. As much as I hate waiting, like all the other grumbling folk around me in the "lobby" and outside, we still sit tight up to an hour plus at times jealously staring down the other patrons feasting away like rabid fiends. I was really, really bummed to not like Mountain House, but the honest truth is that I had no idea how anyone even finished their meal, let alone liked it. It appears that there is pretty much always a line here--we were seated in a reasonable amount of time, but any wait at all for this experience doesn't seem worth it. We ordered the crispy sizzling tofu and the sour cabbage and fish soup. The dishes don't come with rice, so it needs to be ordered on the side. The redeeming quality here was that the crispy tofu was excellent. It came out steaming hot (temperature-wise), was bursting with flavor, and wasn't soggy at all. I'm no stranger to Szechuan food, but after 2 bites, the fish was nearly completely inedible to me. The dish was so mouth-numbingly spicy that you could hardly feel your lips or tongue, let alone the food. We ended up calling it quits and leaving, even skipping our planned dessert stops. It's possible that there are folks out there who can stomach this quantity of Szechuan peppercorns in their food, but I was so taken aback in part because I'm very accustomed to eating this cuisine, and have never had this issue anywhere else. The restaurant itself feels unique and upscale, with wide booths and pretty dishware. It's pretty busy here so it is somewhat difficult to get service, and ordering is done via mobile device. A manager did stop by to chat with us, especially after we mentioned it was our first time, but when we wanted to ask for something specific it took a while to find a server.

I've wanted to try Mountain house for years and I finally got a chance to go there during the holiday break. I came in around 4pm for an early dinner and I didn't have to wait. There were plenty of tables open at the time. The restaurant is beautiful. It looks like something from a Chinese movie with the decor. The place setting was also really pretty. They start you off with a pot of hot jasmine tea and a bowl of pickled cabbage while you order on the iPad. I ordered a fish dish, the shrimp, and a pot of rice. You're able to customize the dishes for less spice, less numb, less salt which is a bonus. The food itself was delicious and well seasoned. The shrimp dish had a lot of massive prawns in it and they all tasted very fresh. The mushroom and rice dish was also flavorful and a nice non-spicy dish to pair with the other proteins. Lastly, the fish dish was delicious and not for people who don't have a good spice tolerance. It doesn't feel spicy at first, but it definitely coats your mouth. Everything was very good and the service was great as well. Very attentive staff and they were able to help through out my time there.

Our server was nice. Hostess seemed flustered. The majority of the food was sooooo salty! We had a lot of leftovers for this reason. I will add that the mala sensation does tend to alter your tastebuds a bit. So certain foods or drinks may taste different. Still...some dishes were way too salty. The pea sprouts were prepared well though. The sweet and sour pork was good too. It was nice to have a contrast of flavor, compared to all the spicy and salty dishes. Side note, the tablet was a bit annoying to use. The menu design was aesthetically pleasing but not practical. They seem to be doing well though. Unfortunately, about 6 or so items were sold out/not available.

Disappointing Service & Poor Seating Arrangement Extremely disappointed with our experience here. I made a reservation for 6 people One Month in advance (in fact, today is my birthday) expecting a comfortable dining setup for my group. However, upon arrival, we were squeezed into a table clearly designed for 4 people. When we pointed this out, the staff insisted it was a '6-person table' and refused to move us to the larger tables available, claiming those were reserved for 7-8 people. This is inconsistent and unprofessional, as we have been seated at those larger tables with a group of 6 before. What's the point of making a reservation so far in advance if the restaurant can't provide adequate seating? The lack of flexibility and the dismissive attitude of the staff ruined our evening. For a place like Mountain House, I expected much better service. Will not be coming back anytime soon."

We were in Boston- looking for lunch, and decided to try this restaurant. We could tell this was a popular local restaurant. The decor is chic with nice mood lighting. Very attentive staff. The meal started with hot tea. We ordered their popular pork belly. The presentation was lovely- it was my first time having it served in this fashion. The dipping sauce was great. We also ordered an okra salad- again, the preparation was totally different, and the flavors were great. While it's not totally uncommon to see trotter soup on a menu, we've never had pig feet prepared that way- it was a snowy day, so we decided to give it a try. I can't lie- using chopsticks to pick up pig feet was a little challenging- but we worked it out as gracefully as we could. The dipping sauce completely elevated the dish. Everything was very good.

Beautiful space and strong, dynamic Sichuan flavors in every dish, spicy in all, numbing in most, and very different flavors in the different dishes, even when they look very similar. Tried ten dishes over two visits. La Zi Chicken (aka Chongqing Chicken and Dry Hot Chicken): Crisp pieces, though smaller than the juicier ones I prefer at Lan Feast, but a solid dish overall. Like most renditions, way more dried red peppers than meat, but this was more of a meat deficiency than most. Well above average though. Long Beans (aka String Beans): Possibly the best version I ever tasted. Perfectly cooked, with soft crumbly meat added, and scintillatingly spiced, including just the right amount of sodium to make it pop. Elite. Szechuan Shredded Pork: Very tender worm-shaped shreds, with vegetables and a spicy brown sauce. A little too gloppy for my liking, but delicious. Above average. Sizzling Tofu: Nicely presented on a board, but not sizzling at all. Crisp exterior and marshmallowy texture to the very delicate interior. We toned down the spice for my wife, so I won't comment on flavor. Stir Fried Cabbage: Retained some crispness and had some pleasant flavor to the light sauce. Simple but effective. Inclusion of meat was a surprise. Above average. Yibin Noodles: Cold, thick, and peanutty, with spiciness, making for a pleasant start. Ma Po Tofu: Tender, wobbly cubes in a fiery oil with other spices, herbs, and what I suspect are bits of meat. Spice under control and slightly salty in a good way. Well above average to near-elite. Ma Ma Hot Fish: Extra tender black fish in a spicy and sour broth with double the numbing action. Captivatingly successful in flavor and texture. Similar to another favorite at Yunnan Kitchen elsewhere, and I'm eager to return there to compare. Near-elite to elite. Ma La Beef: Thin strips of beef in a thick but oily red liquid with assertive red chili peppers. Decent texture; great flavor. Near-elite. Grilled Beef Rib with Steamed Buns: The most visually impressive dish, with attempted theater at the table. The slightly tough and fatty rib meat cut from the bone was a nice respite from the heat, but was ultimately a misfire in its flavor and texture. Fun experience, though, making beef sandwiches with the bao, scallion, cucumber, and two sauces. A little tough to order via QR code and cellphone, but flexible in that you can alter spice and numbing levels and omit ingredients if needed. I missed a few meat removals on vegetable dishes that didn't mention meat in the name-- you really have to study the fine print. Still much more on the menu left to try. Still a bit underwhelmed by the service. There's no rudeness or attitude; just a noticeable lack of initiative and focus. Not a showstopper by any means.

Service by Vincent was 5/5 stars. Also incense and having women's sanitary products in the restroom is a very nice touch. Standout from tonight was the fried tofu. The peppercorns reallllly numb up your mouth in a way that far exceeds any other place.

We walked in on a Friday night around 830 and were fortunate there was 1 table open in a packed restaurant! Highly recommend making a reservation in advance. Be prepared for a mix of spices, oils, and mouth-watering and numbing tastes at Mountain House! We had the jimmy noodles - surprisingly tasty for cold noodles with peanuts, oil, and a little chilly. The Ma Ma flounder fish was so soft it literally slides down your throat. Do not underestimate the size, It is a large main dish to share for three people! The baseline flavor is spicy, so go with "less spicy" if you have a calm palate. The Kung Pao chicken is unique for it's sweet flavor, is practically a dessert for a main dish. And the mapo tofu is a must try if you like tofu! A mix of spicy and tangy seasoning and also a very good portion..the jasmine water here is a refreshing and different than other places, be sure to enjoy!

Overall:Mountain House offers a great selection of Sichuan dishes with bold, authentic flavors and plenty of variety. Some dishes stood out more than others, but overall it was a satisfying meal, especially for sharing with a group. Service:Service was okay overall. We waited quite a while to be seated, and several parties the same size who arrived after us were seated first, which was a bit frustrating. However, the staff was kind and thoughtful as they surprised our table with a complimentary dessert for my friend's birthday, which we really appreciated and helped end the meal on a positive note. Swing Pork Belly:Light, refreshing, and a great starter. The flavors were balanced and not too heavy, making it a nice contrast to the richer dishes. Dumplings in Chili Oil (Pork):Very spicy with a strong chili oil kick, definitely for spice lovers. It was too spicy for me. Lazi Chicken (with Bones):One of my favorite dishes of the night. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and impressively not greasy despite being fried. Mapo Tofu:Not my favorite. The Sichuan peppercorn flavor was quite overpowering and overly numbing for my taste. Mala Prawns (with Shells):Flavor was decent, but personally I'm not a fan of peeling shrimp while eating, which made it less enjoyable. Diced Chicken with Lotus Roots (with Bones):Solid dish but not particularly memorable compared to some of the standouts. Sichuan Style Fried Noodles:My favorite dish overall as it was deeply savory, comforting, and packed with flavor. Final Thoughts:A good spot for classic Sichuan cuisine with bold spice and shareable plates. The complimentary birthday dessert was a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel special.

A friend and I stumbled upon Mountain House - she has been to Mountain House in other cities and was excited when she saw it was in Boston. We had Kung pow chicken, a thin sliced pork dish, fried tofu and pea shoots - all were delicious. The restaurant was beautiful - very zen decor, very clean. The servers were nice and efficient - the food arrived on the quick side. It was a great meal in a great space! I will be back! read more

I heard of this restaurant from friends and decided to try. It turned out to be a brilliant idea. Although we had to wait for 30+min to be seated, the food was totally worth the waiting. The menu is kind of unique with many items I don't usually see in other Chinese restaurants. It was quite fun to read through the menu trying to figure out what they are. We randomly picked a few and everything was more than amazing. I wished I came earlier. Most of the dishes are spicy, but all tasty with great food presentation. There are non-spicy choices too. My favorite is actually the duck egg yolk corn kernels. My only complaint is the limited table and seating space. In fact, Tables are generally not big enough for parties more than 4 ppl unless you are skinny. read more

I was so excited to try Mountain House when I saw it in Allston the other day and was able to go last night. I heard the wait times were atrocious but I went Sunday night around 7:00 and was sat by 8:30 (30 names on the wait). I don't think their is an option to put your name in before you arrive but it is on the minipass app which is nice because it has the entire menu with photos which I couldn't find elsewhere. Deciding what to get was so difficult! They give you complimentary szechuan pickles which is pickled cabbage with chili oil and chilis, as well as a nice light floral tea. We got the eggplant and string beans, pepper lover chicken, and mala boiled beef. The eggplant was so good and extremely savory and meaty flavored. Pepper lover chicken was what I was most excited about and I did not like it but it was a personal preference. The chicken was tender but I really did not like the kind of peppers they used (I think it was the green ones) because they had an extremely strong pepper flavor. It is called pepper lover though and the person I was with liked the flavor a lot. The mala boiled beef was so good and the portions are huge. It came with a lot of bean sprouts but I love them so it was great. If I were to come again, I want to try the ma po tofu and swinging pork belly since it looked like everyone around me ordered those two things. I also want to try the la-zi chicken, grilled beef ribs, sweet and sour pork, clay pot wine beef with potatoes, sizzling crispy tofu, szechuan double cooked pork, ma la prawn, and szechuan fried noodles. I really love the interior of Mountain House. It is dark and clean looking and overall a nice lookin restaurant. They use beautiful plates and cups to serve your food and everything is worth taking photos of. It is a much more upscale dining experience compared to other szechuan restaurants in Boston. Highly recommend for szechuan food lovers and especially for those who like delicacies because they have some very Chinese dishes that you don't find much elsewhere! read more

I went to the St Marks location in New York a while ago and it was the best Sichuan food I had ever tried. Luckily, the food at the Boston location is just as good as I remembered. We showed up on a Thursday shortly before 6 and waited an hour for a table for 5. The interior is beautiful and every staff member we interacted with was extremely kind and attentive. We ordered the swing pork belly, lazi chicken, beef sour soup mapo tofu, peppercorn beef, and stir fried cauliflower. Everything was great; our favorites were the cauliflower and beef sour soup. I think the prices are really reasonable for the quality. We each paid a little over $30. No leftovers, but I can't remember the last time I was so full. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

Tried this place after hearing that it was the best of its kind in Boston. Sizzling tofu was crispy, light and delicious on fried rice. The fried rice was fresh and perfectly proportioned egg and mushroom and green onion. You can ask for the Szechuan fried rice without meat, same for the mapo tofu. Pretty sure I've never had Chinese food this flavorful, light and fresh. Can't wait to go back and try more. I don't eat meat (prob in sauces but I didn't ask) but think I can find much to enjoy here.beautiful inside and wait staff is friendly! read more

Lovely atmosphere; Kenny was a very congenial server. Full disclosure: our party was not Asian, but likes spicy food. Disappointed w. La-Zi Chicken because it was 90% chilis, peppercorns, etc., and 10% tiny crispy pieces of chicken. We enjoyed the Sizzling Crispy Tofu and the Sauteed Water Spinach. Part of the restaurant's appeal are attractive and varied presentation of dishes. read more

I recently came here with family for the first time and my impressions weren't that great. To begin with, we were quoted a 20-minute wait for a table. Which was fine if it was actually 20 minutes, but nope, it was actually closer to about an hour. In a neighborhood where there's metered parking for 2 hours, that long of a wait is somewhat of a deal breaker because who wants to go move cars in the middle of a meal? (Also learned on the spot that you can reserve at a table via phone. Their NY location can be reserved on Resy but not this Boston location.) Also didn't understand the seating arrangements. There was a party of 3 waiting for a table when we arrived. At that time, a table for 6 had just left and the table needed to be cleared up. So did another table for 4. Naturally, you'd seat the party of 3 at a table for 4, right? Nope, they sat them at the 6-person table. So us, a party of 5, had to wait some more because we couldn't possibly fit at the table for 4. The food came out pretty fast and it was at least decent. I wouldn't go out of my way to have Sichuan food here when the cuisine is now very popular elsewhere in the city. read more

Got La-zi chicken (diced chicken with red Chillies) and Kung Pao for to go. Boy that La-Zi chicken got some spice in it that threw me off. My entire mouth got tingly and couldn't eat it at all ! Had to throw it away. Kung Pao wasn't good either. So much oil. Looked like chicken was floating in that oil ! Threw that away as it didn't have flavor either. Also, the price is high for this kind of food. First time ever getting disappointed with Chinese food. Makes this hard for me to go back to this place. read more

Expect to wait 2-3 hours for a table as they just opened! I would put your name on the waitlist earlier than you expect to eat and come back later. But once you get in the staff are all super nice and there is free Jasmine Tea which was delicious! The staff will help with recommendations and there are options for some items to make it slightly less spicy if you still want to try the food but can't handle too much spice. This menu is truly for people who can tolerate, love and enjoy spicy food! The food was delicious and it came out super fast despite how full and busy the restaurant was. The star of the show for me was the Minced Beef and Egg Drop soup. I didn't expect it to be so hearty and it helped with some of the heat. The staff are super kind and they filled our bowls with soup and rice. They also came around to fill our cup of tea whenever it was empty, the customer service was lovely! The interior is beautiful! It is a bit small but it accommodates everyone without being feeling too tight. The furniture and decorations make the interior a wonderful space to sit in! If you're not in too much of a rush to check out the place, I would say wait a few months for the hype to die down as tables will take a LONG time. read more

A very disappointing first experience. Recommended this by Chinese friends and we're a Chinese/Asian family hoping for an authentic experience. I don't like to write poor reviews, but from service to food, this was a failure. 1. Ordered takeout at 4:30pm on a Sunday. Was told it would be an hour to be ready. Surprising, but we ordered early so we could afford to wait. By itself, NBD, but just to forewarn others here. 2. Person on the phone seemed very inexperienced, and was whispering questions to someone by her side during my order. She messed up several items on our order (I ordered long beans WITH EGGPLANT, and got only longbeans; I asked for the chicken with lotus to be made mildly spicy, and instead she made the non-spicy dish lotus with celery to be mildly spicy!) The latter was a big deal because we were ordering for the whole family and wanted 4 non-spicy dishes, and this cut out one dish for the kids. Do you know what would have solved this issue? If she repeated back my order. The restaurant doesn't have online ordering, either, so there was no other alternative than doing an order by phone. 3. The food was a DUD. Lotus with celery was average. Sauteed morning glory was so boring and lacked freshness. Ribs with steamed buns came with sauce that needed more salt. Oh, and sweet and sour pork was too chewy and no better than any takeout chinese place. 4. Prices for dishes are expensive compared to other restaurants. We absolutely LOVED Mountain house! It gets packed so get here early to secure a table! The atmosphere is so unique and relaxing! I would have come back just for the atmosphere. The black fish is way more fresh than the flounder. The sautéed Chinese long bean with eggplant has the worst long bean I've tasted but very good eggplant. We had tried to come to this place several times and it was always a long wait. So we thought it must be worth it. Now we finally had the dinner at this place and we were kind of disappointed. Maybe we did not order the best dishes they can offer but several of them were recommended by their staff. Oustanding szechuan food in the allston area. We came about 30 minutes before lunch opening on a weekend and there was already about 15 people lined up in front of us. The food was amazing, starting with the pork belly swing it was refreshing as it is wrapped in cucumber and that spicy peanuty sauce was delicious. The mama hot fish was also amazing, the fish was so tender and this dish is probably the closest thing to the real deal in Boston. I actually did not enjoy the la zi ji, it wasnt cooked that well and was not crispy enough. The dungeness crab with sticky rice was amazing but it is slightly pricey at 76$. I visited this restaurant a couple of days ago for Sichuan cuisine, and the flavors were truly authentic. I had heard it was famous in New York but never got a chance to try it until now in Boston. We ordered some classic dishes that we usually enjoy Fu-Qi Special: The meat was well-prepared and flavorful, and the sauce had a rich taste. It was just perfect as an appetizer. Yibin Ran Noodles: I absolutely adore burning noodles and always order them at Sichuan restaurants. Their version was incredibly fragrant, and the noodles were very flavorful. Mao Xue Wang: This dish is one of my favorites. Their broth was clear, rich in flavor, and incredibly satisfying. The platter had a delicious mix of scallops, shrimp, clams and fish. The chowder has a lot of dill in it, but wow...it's the best chowder I had on my trip. I had high hopes for this restaurant after hearing great things, but sadly, my experience fell short. At first, I was ecstatic when we got seated so quickly. But, as time went on, I realized that Mountain House was not for me despite my love for Szechuan food. The service was the main letdown. Our server seemed inattentive throughout the meal, forgetting to refill our water, light our cold tea, and even overlooking some of our requests. We felt neglected, with no check-ins at all. Oddly, instead of refilling our glasses at the table, we were asked to reach over to the bar, which felt awkward. The server mostly interacted with us from a distance at the bar. Perhaps it was because we were seated at a table in the corner of the restaurant, but regardless, it was disappointing. We ordered the mapo tofu and mama hot fish, which were said to be the most popular dishes, along with the Szechuan double-fried pork and Szechuan fried noodles. A major drawback was the staggered serving of dishes, as they didn't arrive together. This disrupted the balance of the meal and made it exhausting to eat. Personally, the ma-ma hot fish didn't suit my taste. Despite ordering the black fish, the flavors of peppercorn and beansprouts seemed to mute the flavor of the fish itself. The mapo tofu was decent but not particularly exciting. While the tofu was cooked well, the broth felt a bit monotonous after a while. The Szechuan double-fried pork initially impressed with its flavorful taste and well-cooked pork. However, after a few bites, the dish became tiresome due to its heavy and oily nature. Adding vinegar or some acidic element could have balanced the dish better. On a brighter note, the Szechuan fried noodles were enjoyable. The tender beef and satisfying noodles made for a pleasant dish. While Szechuan cuisine is known for its oiliness, it may not appeal to everyone, including myself. I had hoped for at least one exceptional dish, but unfortunately, none stood out. I had high expectations for this place, and while it's possible I may have chosen the wrong dishes, I anticipated a more memorable experience. read more

This is not your everyday chinese takeout experience. It is more on the upscale side. Known for its successful operations in LA and NY, this is the fourth location of Mountain House. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a long line forming just as the restaurant was opening, indicating its popularity. Our visit coincided with the Lunar New Year celebration, and the restaurant's decor beautifully captured the essence of Chinese tradition. Despite the festive atmosphere, it was evident that the restaurant is still fine-tuning its operations, as the speed of service was slower than expected. However, with six chefs working tirelessly in the kitchen, it's clear they are dedicated to delivering quality dishes. We ordered the pepper fish and tofu, and I must say, the pepper fish packed quite a numbing punch! The food is so authentic Szechuan upon my first visit, therefore I went back again for my birthday celebration. The interior deco is very Chinese which add a pleasant ambiance to your dining experience, if you are not afraid of little stimulation to spice up your taste buds, I would absolutely recommend the sizzling fish, both times we ordered, it didn't fail our expectations. During busy lunch or dinner time, it will take a while to be seated, but consider the mouth watering food awaits you, it's definitely worth the wait! Better than any Chinatown restaurants I found, I actually traveled quite a distance from downtown Boston to this location. Today, I finally got to taste their dishes. The Numbing Chicken tasted fantastic; the fiery sensation on the tongue kept me reaching for more. The fusion of texture and the spicy flavor in the Ma-Po Tofu was exceptional. The Fried Rice left a lasting impression; the combination of pickled vegetables and cured meat with the rice was a delightful surprise.
