I had chicken-fried steak, collard greens and blackeyed peas (both times - it was so good the first time I couldn't make myself try something different), hubby had meat loaf one time, chicken-fried chicken the next, with mac and cheese and fried okra that was crisp and wonderful and not a greasy mess like you get at most places. My boyfriend ordered the smothered pork chops, cabbage, mac and cheese with cornbread. The cabbage was very tasty. The smothered pork chop was overly crispy with a very salty brown gravy. The food was incredible authentic. We were told that all the food is made from scratch to order. Well,it sure is!!! The cornbread is like moist cake, the chicken is fried to a beautiful golden brown and seasoned just right. A friend order the meatloaf grilled cheese which was moist and satisfying. My son had the chicken fried steak which was done well, but a bit tough. I had the catfish which was delicious, perfectly friend and seasoned which came with homemade tarter sauce which was quite delicious. I also tried their jalapeno sauce which tasted like a very spice green salsa. It complimented the chicken and fish well. My son mixed it in with his white rice and loved it that way to. We love southern style cooking. This small restaurant is a fine example. Everything we tried was seasoned perfectly and required no extra salt and pepper. The collard greens were cooked simply with no layer of grease as seen in other restaurants. They tasted as though they were cooked the same day. The crust on the pork chops and chicken fried steak was flavorful and not too thick. The rice pilaf had rice that did not clump together and have a very pleasant, spicy aftertaste. The cornbread was soft. Mildly sweet and had just enough crumb to the bite. This is not a fancy place but the service is friendly and we were asked often if everything was okay. Can't remember the last time I ate so much that I nearly fell asleep at the restaurant lol they've only been in business for 10 months, but they will definitely become a staple if they continue to serve up some of the best soul food in town. Cornbread was sweet and cakey, greens were tenders and packed with flavor, macaroni and cheese. LAWD! Who is cooking the Mac!? It's delicious! And the Korean style ribs- the waitress said these were a favorite- meat so tender that it falls right off the bone - they were sweet, didn't have too much fat and they served plenty of them! I also tried the chicken fried steak and it was of course seasoned and cooked very well. They close at 8pm, and we're out of pumpkin cake by the time we got there, so get your orders in early. The owners are great. I love the food and the atmosphere. They try to accomodate everyone. They make you feel like part of a family. The chef will sometimes come out to talk to the customers, if he has enough time. There are some things that you can order that may not be in the menu, for example, fried green tomatoes or you can have the asian sauce on your chicken wings. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. I talk about this place to my co-workers and neighbors ALL THE TIME. Give this place a try. Remember good food takes time. First off the folks who run this place are very friendly, warm, welcoming, and accommodating. For example I asked about the oxtails but ordered chicken fried steak. The woman who was waiting on us brought me a little cup of the oxtails to try. Completely surprised me. So kind. Oh and the oxtails? Fabulous. Fall off the bone tender with gravy that was stellar. The chicken fried steak and white gravy were very good. The mashed potatoes amazing. My wife had fried chicken, greens, and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. All excellent. She also tried a piece of fried chicken with jalapeño sauce that was delicious. Seriously if you like this style food you owe it to yourself to try Mr A Ok's. Great flavor and fall off the bone tender. I have the chicken fried steak and it was as delicious I was hoping. Not tough and well breaded. Mashed potatoes were delicious with cream gravy. Husband had the fried chicken which he said was some of the best he's had. He ordered the greens but our server recommended the cabbage which had chunks of ham hock in it and he was very pleased.
