It's been a while since I've been so picked up some food for my sister and brother in law for lunch. I will say it was a huge hit - everyone loved everything! Things tried: 1. Habanero pesto sando: my BILs pick and he devoured it in one sitting. So I guess he just kinda liked it? He did say it was delicious and would get it again. 2. Yakisoba sando: my sister's pick - she was so impressed with the sandwich - so much that when I order again she wants the same sandwich. 3. Original sando: my pick. I've had the sandwich 3x but it never gets old and is so good. The katsu is cooked perfectly. The sauce on it is a tad sweet so I'm glad I got a side of the curry fries to break down the sweetness. 4. Potato puffs: they weren't as good as I remembered. It might be I got curry potato puffs last time and these were the original. I did dip them in the curry from the curry fries and it hit the spot. 5. Curry fries: this is genius! Amazingly delicious and I'd totally get this again and again. I love when curry has veggies in it and it was the perfect spice level for me. Also I got the curry on the side bc I wasn't eating them right away in case you're wondering. I will add I drove the food to the South Bay and it held up well and still tasted great. I was really excited to try Mr. Katsu after reading the raving reviews from so many Yelpers. Unfortunately, I didn't have the same level of satisfaction after the meal. The Original ($9): Pork cutlet, coleslaw and katsu sauce layered between two pieces of bread. Highly recommend asking for light katsu sauce or sauce on the side because it was too overwhelming and made one half of the pork cutlet soggy. The cole slaw was also soggy and tasted as if it had been sitting in the dressing for a while. American Breakfast ($11): Pork cutlet, egg, bacon and A LOT of syrup. Again, would recommend getting syrup on the side otherwise you'll have sticky fingers throughout the meal. Would have definitely preferred this sandwich over the original. We were on one of our food trips and we happen to pick this place. Very clean quaint place. We ordered the The All American Breakfast Sandwich and the WTF fries. The fries were freshly made. The sauce was so good. A perfect mix of sweet, salty and with a hint of sriracha. The sandwich was delicious and the cutlet was so crunchy. It had bacon, an over easy, and drizzled with maple syrup. I noticed Mr. Katsu while I was on my way to get some errands done this afternoon. The errand took a little longer that expected, but fortunately for my girlfriend and I it let us work up the right amount of appetite while getting my errands done. Considering the fact that we weren't that hungry, we ordered an original katsu sandwich and a side of potato puffs, curry flavor. Mr. Katsu is one of those social media spots where it looks like it absolutely cannot let you down, but once you get it and get your bite in, it just kinda comes off as ehhh...... The katsu is (literally) sandwiched between two thick pieces of toast. The toast was great, sure. The sandwich itself was definitely big enough to share with someone else. Cole slaw was decent, the sandwich itself was decent, the katsu sauce was a bit overpowering and a bit much. Presented in a small little container enough to fit half a sandwich, it sits soaking in a little puddle of katsu sauce. It's unwieldy and a bit of a chore to eat. Good luck cutting it because it'll just cut everything unevenly, leaving you to essentially make a katsu sandwich in your mouth by eating a piece of bread, katsu, and cole slaw in different bites. Think Frank from It's Always Sunny when he talks about making a hoagie in his mouth (the Shadynasty episode). ANYWAYYY, the sandwich was pricy. It was $9 for an original. The other fancier ones were north of $10. The one I was looking at was something like $12. What's up with sandwiches costing as much as a full blown entree at a sit down restaurant anyway? That's a topic for discussion for another day. The sandwich was alright, definitely a bit overpriced in my book. I was sort of expecting a traditional katsu sandwich you'd find at a Japanese market or konbini, but it was a little more than what I was expecting I guess. A group of us decided to check out this place after seeing all the 'grams and raving reviews on Yelp. We ordered an American breakfast, Chipotle Asiago, Habanero Pesto, Curry fries and WTFF. The chipotle and habanero both had a strong kick of spiciness so prepare your bootie. We noticed that there was too much coleslaw on our sandwiches and had to remove a majority of it. The katsu is very crispy and quite enjoyable minus the spice. The curry fries was very underwhelming. The curry tasted like instant curry would not recommend. So we ended up in Yorba Linda after a trip to Orange County and found this spot! There was ample parking outside and plenty of seating inside. We decided to get the original katsu and katsu curry sandwiches. The Katsu sandwich had great flavors and nice texture! The portion size was good for the price as well. What the heck! Mr. Katsu was not what I expected. I expected a traditional sit down restaurant serving Japanese style chicken or pork cutlets with gravy and rice. My mistake. This restaurant specializes in making Asian fusion sandwiches and casual eats. Order off the menu board, walk over to the counter, place your order, and pay. While waiting for your order, grab a table, and get ready to enjoy a yummy meal. We got our order to go. Although, we ended up eating in the strip mall parking lot that Mr. Katsu is located. Yeah, the food smelled so good that we could not wait. My in-laws shared the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich. It was huge. The two of them could not even finish the sandwich so they enjoyed the leftovers later. They said the sandwich was very good. My wife ordered the Kalbi Fusion Bowl (KFB), and I ordered the What the Frick Fries (WTFF). The fries was such a generous portion that we ended up sharing the fries, and eating the delicious Kalbi Fusion Bowl later that evening. The WTFF is frickkin amazing!! Such a great name too! After one bite, I found myself saying What the Frick!! This is so good!!! Every thing went so well together. The sandwiches here are just ok. The katsu isn't super crispy or flavorful and the curry is pretty bland. They are really big and filling however. The star of this place is oddly the potato puffs. They're the best potato derivative I've ever tasted, crunchy on the outside with a mochi like texture on the inside. This place has been on my radar for a while and I finally was in the area to try one of their iconic katsu sandwiches. I'm loving that there is more availability of such Japanese-inspired sandwiches in Socal but they are still hard to find in general. First thing's first, Mr. Katsu's sandwiches are more hearty and heavy for comfort food lovers and less for folks who want a lighter, more convenient store-style Japanese sando. I ordered the curry katsu with breaded chicken instead of the pork. I thought the chicken alone paired well with the curry sauce, as it typically does. The soft Japanese bread is usually on the sweeter side but eaten with the curry, I thought it was too sweet. I don't think the two paired very well. The katsu itself is juicy and delicious. I am just not a fan of combining a lot of heavy flavors in one meal. It can be overwhelming. Nonetheless, the quality is there and I love that you can interchange the pork with chicken! I visited Mr Katsu for the first time a couple weeks ago and it seems like a little mom and pop shop which I love supporting. Not only that but it is super filling and prices are not super crazy. As of right now, they are only taking to-go orders and you are unable to dine in. We ordered 3 items and got their fries to share; everyone loved their katsu sandwich and even saved half of it for leftovers. Habanero Pesto: This was recommended when we asked about some of their favorite items. He absolutely loved it and said would get it again. He initially thought it would be too spicy but it had just the right amount of pesto and spice. The meat was super thick and worth it - they are definitely worth it! The Original: $10 This was honestly one of the best sandwiches I have had, while the bread was a bit thick - it balanced it out really well. Not to mention, half of this sandwich is what you would get at other places for the same price. It is definitely a bigger portion and they do not skimp out. What the Frick Fries: $10 These were coated in pork, kimchi, and sauce. Super delicious as well! I ordered the Habanero Pesto sandwich with chicken katsu cutlet. The sandwich comes with habanero aioli, pesto sauce spread on the toasted sandwich bread, and cole slaw. If you don't like spicy at all, then this is not the sandwich for you. Anyways, overall the sandwich was ok. The best katsu I've had, hands down. The umeboshi goat cheese was phenomenal! The original arrived with what looked like a 1/2 pound pork cutlet, expertly deep fried to a golden brown. The savory cutlet is dressed with a delicious derivative of BBQ sauce called tonkatsu sauce, topped with a light slaw. All this is cradled by a freshly toasted Texas toast style bread that's french. This sandwich has girth. When I took the first bite, I could tell the ingredients were fresh and of good quality. At $9 this is a great value. I enjoyed their chicken katsu sandwich. Very crispy with lots of flavor. This place is very hidden inside a small plaza. Would've never found this place without my friend's recommendation. Their fries were pretty good as well, but their portion of meat on top was scarce. 90% fries 10% protein/sauce. For the cost of the fries, I would've expected more. I had not been back to Mr. Katsu since my last review of this place in 2016. Dang I have been missing out. Mr. Katsu is still legit, with unique flavors and delicious food all the way around. I personally ordered the Bacon Avocado and it was legit one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. You would think the teriyaki sauce would make it all too sweet, but it does the opposite, by combining all the flavors together to give you a unique bite every time. I hope that they get all the support and business to stay open for a long time. I feel like the location itself is kind of bad, and that they would benefit by moving elsewhere... but until then... This review is based on the Curry Katsu and the WTFF (I have no idea what this stands for) The Curry Katsu (~$10): Exactly what you would expect it. There is no coleslaw. It is a Japanese curry and deep fried chicken/pork with some bread. If I wanted a katsu sandwich, I would stick with the original or the spicy one. This was a little boring. WTFF: This was a little disappointing because I was expecting more meat, less sauce, and tastier fries. I felt like there was too much sauce that was overpowering everything. It didn't seem like traditional bulgogi, more like pieces of carne asada. The fries were good and I was finding myself looking for fries that had nothing on it. Decided to check this place out for lunch. Called as soon as they opened, was a bit surprised that it would take 15-20mins just to make an order of fries, but at least the people there are very friendly and proper in greetings and conversation. Got the "What the Frick Fries". Presentation is great, but personally the party sauce was waaaaaaaaaay too sweet for my taste. Basically tasted like thousand island sauce but 100 times sweeter. And the meat was a bit on the scarce side, was hoping to see thick slices of kalbi, but more minced up and spread evenly.
