This was my first time here and we ordered the original and the curry katsu (think like Japanese version of schnitzel, fried pork) sandwich. The food came out quick and had great presentation. The cold slaw did not have quite enough tang. Located in a little old plaza, Mr. Katsu is a hidden gem. We called in for takeout and tried their Original ($10), Katsu Curry ($11), Habanero Pesto ($11), and the Yakisoba ($11). All the sandwiches were delicious, but my favorite was the Habanero Pesto - a crispy pork katsu cutlet, refreshing coleslaw, spicy habanero aioli, and pesto all sandwiched between two slices of THICK toasted bread. Today I noticed they started selling new drinks too so I got the sparkling grape refresher and WOW. This drink reminds me of the canned Korean grape juice they sell at the Korean market with the tiny bits of grape in them, but carbonated. Fries cooked very well but the curry had a porridge-like texture with these weird lumps. The flavor was also so-so, and didn't have the depth that Japanese curry normally does. The katsu sandwich was a disappointment. First off, the katsu wasn't cooked with breadcrumbs but rather some coating like you might see on a chicken fried steak. Secondly, there was WAY too much katsu sauce on the sandwich. You could barely taste the katsu itself. A proper katsu sandwich should have just enough katsu sauce to add sweetness to balance the saltiness of the katsu. Not overwhelm it. There was a long line when I went so I suggest ordering it online prior to going. I can tell they tried following the pandemic protocol but it ended up not working out; people were too close to one another rather than being six feet apart. I ordered the Yakisoba sandwich and honestly, I regretted it. The sauce made the bottom portion of the bread soggy. As for the upper portion, it was very, VERY thick. The noodles were flavorful but it was a bit salty to my liking. As for the lettuce, it was okay, I just don't think it complements well with the flavor of the noodles. My cousin had recommended this place to me and had said that this place is "bomb." I had to see for myself how "bomb" their sandwiches are...and they're pretty BOMB. I ordered through Postmates so the food quality might be different if you ordered it fresh from the restaurant. I ordered the original katsu sandwich with chicken (instead or the default which is pork). The sandwich was HUGE and definitely worth the price. The only thing I didn't like was that the chicken wasn't crunchy like I expect chicken katsu to be. They also put too much sauce in the sandwich so it was a little soggy. Besides those two flaws, I thought the sandwich was delicious. The combination of chicken katsu, coleslaw, and their special sauce made it taste delicious. My expectations for this place were a little high compared to what I ended up with. I ordered the original katsu sandwich and opted for the chicken katsu, and I guess I expected there to be a chicken katsu in the sandwich. I always introduce my friend and family to Mr. Katsu because the quality and flavors of the sandwiches are great! However, today I called in at 11:30 to place a Togo order. The worker on the phone picked up and put me on hold. When we ordered, the male worker (Justin?) was being extremely rude. When we came to pick up the order, Justin(?) told my coworkers that they open at 11:30 for the person who called? That is extremely rude. When we called about the raw pork, the male talked to me for a minute and then didn't say a word and a lady came on. She explained that the katsu sanwiches are normally on the pink side. More like 3.5, but I'm rounding to 4 stars because I think the menu items are unique especially for the area. I've been coming here for a while now and this review is long overdue. It's a great katsu sandwich place with a bunch of different ways to dress up the katsu. They also have good fries and sides. My favorite is the tried and true Original. The katsu is a generous size, and it's held together with two large pieces of buttered thick toast, with slaw and tonkatsu sauce inside. I've also had American Breakfast, Curry and the Habanero Pesto - but I always come back to the tried and true Original. Another dish I love here are the What the Frick Fries which are basically bulgogi fries with some sriracha and sriracha mayo. It's incredibly simple, but also incredibly delicious. The fries are perfectly crispy and thin, and the meat is tender, savory and slightly sweet. Paired with the tang of the sriracha and sriracha mayo and it's and you've got a gluttony party in your mouth. My only qualm with this place is sometimes the food is hit or miss. On my last visit, I thought that the katsu was a bit burnt - which I understand can be difficult since you want to make sure the meat is cooked. Aside from that, their fountain drinks were a tad off and the thermostat wasn't on so t was a musty 86 inside.
