A little disappointed with my visit to Mr. Katsu. I went in a few weeks ago after it popping up on Yelp and bookmarking it. I was excited to try their items, especially since they have a great variety. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. I ordered the All American Breakfast -Style Katsu Sandwich. Upon first look, it looked great! Katsu, runny egg, and bacon all on a thick-cut piece of bread to soak up all the flavors. However, other than the egg, the sandwich was incredibly dry and flavorless. The Texas Toast was possibly too thick and was the main culprit for the lack of moisture within the sandwich. The bacon nor katsu added much to the sandwich other than some texture and even dipping the sandwich into the provided maple syrup could not rescue it. I also ordered the potato puffs which were okay as well. The dipping sauce that accompanied the puffs really brought those up, but they were extremely heavy and flavorless on their own. I hope that it was just an off day or I ordered the wrong items because I really wanted to like Mr. Katsu more than I did. I will return one day in the future to give them another shot. read more

Craving Katsu, and based on their prior reviews decided to give this place a try. It's located in one of those long mini plazas that's a bit run down. The place had 2 outside tables and like 5 inside tables. You just go up to the counter to order and they call you when your order is ready. We shared the katsu sandwich with avocado and bacon made it a combo so we got the 3 potato puffs and a drinks. Also tried their WTF fries. Oh! You can also check in to get a free soft drink. This has the feel of a younger campus crowd. Nothing fancy but I was a bit disappointed that every available table was dirty. We had to wipe and clean up a table to sit down. They weren't busy either and during our time there no one came out to clean any tables. The food came up retry quickly and as the review said one sandwich was definitely big enough to share. Really like the Japanese style toast and slightly sweet cole slaw that's filled along with the katsu. My boyfriend liked the WTF fries but he's also a fan of loaded fries. Located in a strip mall built in another era, Mr. Katsu makes a darn good sandwich. I ordered a lunch combo at the front counter, specifically choosing the original katsu sandwich with a side of potato puffs (3) and soft drink. The fellow at the register was very friendly and delivered my food to my table about 15 minutes later (they cook to order), The sandwich was enormous, the katsu pork covered in a mile-high pile of slaw between two thick pieces of butter-fried bread. I honestly couldn't open my mouth wide enough to take a bite even after trying to squish it together so had to take a fork and remove some of the coleslaw which I ate separately. The pork was decent quality, not tender but not tough either. The panko coating was crunchy yet too greasy. It reminded me of tonkatsu I'd get at "fast food" katsu places in Japan. But the flavor was great and their katsu sauce is fantastic which really added to the overall taste of the sandwich. The potato puffs were superb. The thin, crunchy exterior of each ball gives way to the soft potatoey goodness inside. I wanted to sneak behind the counter and fill my pockets full of them. It's been a while since I've revisited Mr.Katsu but even with COVID restrictions they're as good as ever. Best and most creative fusion sandwich shop I've been to in the OC. This is coming from someone who absolutely hates cole slaw, lives 16 miles away, and doesn't like paying over 5 dollars for a sandwich. I got the Umeboshi Goat Cheese Sandwich (with pork Katsu of course) and it was fantastic. The goat cheese didn't come through as much as I'd like, but it definitely helped keep the sandwich together since theres a whole lot stacked inside. The coleslaw is definitely piled on, but it isn't your coworker's sweet, store bought mayo salad that you may be used to. Very kimchi like and slightly crispy without the sweetness I personally hate in coleslaw. The Texas toast like bread was perfect and soft but strong enough to not completely fall apart. My partner got the Habanero Pesto Sandwich and it was the perfect level of spiciness for the cole slaw to cool you down. We noticed the pork Katsu is perfectly cooked each time. Mr Katsu has been on my list of places to try for a bit, so a few weeks ago my boyfriend and I finally decided to go. There was plenty of parking available. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to my expectations. This is the kind of place where you order at the register and then seat yourself. The girl working the register asked if it was my first time there, and then proceeded to give me some recommendations. I went with the Original Sandwich with chicken cutlet, and decided to make it a combo with 3 curry potato puffs and a drink ($~12-13, can't remember). The curry potato puffs were so delicious! They reminded me a lot of croquettes. As for the sandwich, I'll give Mr Katsu props for the giant portion. However, I really didn't care for the flavor and the chicken was hard for me to eat. I finished probably less than half of the sandwich and then asked my bf if he wanted the rest. I'm giving them 3 stars because I can't justify giving more when I didn't like their main selling point, which is the sandwiches. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but my tried-and-true favorite still remains to be the American Breakfast. Not only do you get the thick cut of katsu pork, it's crowned with an over easy egg, topped with bacon, and then drizzled with maple syrup. Cholesterol be damned. Coming in close second is the Katsu Curry that's similar to the above, but has potatoes and the beautiful kick of aromatic brown curry. When I'm not ordering this in sandwich form, I get my fix with the potato puffs as a side that are served piping hot, and too injected with this spicy flavor. And for something completely different, the Bleu Cheese Buffalo is not to be ignored. The buffalo sauce they use is nice and tangy, offering some nice heat on the tongue, while the cheese holds its own. If you're a fan of buffalo flavors, you'll really enjoy. The staff is always friendly. Because things are made to order, it can take a bit, so it's recommended you phone your order in ahead of time. We finally tried this place after having it bookmarked for so long. It's a small shop in a little strip plaza, but don't let that deter you. Their food is delicious! Food was ehhh, big portion but nothing special. I'm surprised the review is so high. Lack of customer service - It was extremely annoying that they don't have public restrooms, it's not like this place is a to-go only establishment, they have tables for seating, it's reasonable to expect that customers may need to use the restroom or wash their hands especially given that this is a sandwich place. My bladder was about to explode and I repeatedly asked the cashier if he can please make an exception and allow me to use the restroom, he stoically and heartlessly said NO offered no explanation whatsoever. I was pretty upset. I was a customer not some random person asking to use the restroom. I found it upsetting that the cashier refused to make an exception given the circumstances. It was cruel and unkind. He told me to drive to a gas station for the nearest restroom. This review won't be for everyone. For me, good tasting food starts even before the meal is served. I came in to Mr Katsu today, (7/24) around early dinner time, off of a friend's recommendation. By no surprise I am immediately underwhelmed by my katsu curry sandwich, I had no idea what I was getting! On top of that, the incorrigible behavior of this man manning the cash register had ruined my mood and this meal for me. Disgusting. Never have I been let down from every step in the dining process. I won't be returning and I'll be telling everyone I know to avoid this spot. I am in shock, I can't believe something as simple as decency is too difficult to practice here. Can you imagine what else is too difficult for them here? I'll leave you to wonder. We decided to try Mr. Katsu's one recent weekend as it is very close to our home. It is located in a little strip mall next to an Indian grocery store and a sports bar. When we went they had not yet opened for in-door dining. We both ordered the teriyaki chicken sandwich. My wife had the potato puffs and I had the curry fries. Service was friendly. We were the only ones there at the time, with another couple coming in shortly before we received our order. We both liked the sandwiches and will probably try one with pork cutlet next time. The potato puffs were good. I did not know what to expect with the curry fries, but since I like fries and I like curry, wanted to try them. Essentially, they are fries with curry sauce poured over them. Since I'm not a fan of soggy fries, I will probably forego them in the future. **DURING COVID-19** (1st time customer) If I could, I would've given this a 4.5 stars! Only a few constructive pieces of criticism that I had, otherwise this place would've been a 5 star review! PARKING: Shares a parking lot with Vendome liquor and The Bench sports bar. Parking is usually pretty easy in Placentia, but since it's next to the bar I thought it might get a little busy. But I came at 6:15pm and during the COVID era so it wasn't bad. PHONE-IN ORDER: I called ahead, since I live so close, I didn't want to wait inside the restaurant and thought I'd be efficient. They quoted me 7 minutes on my order so I left quickly after I hung up the phone. It took about 15-20 minutes total, which is double what they told me. Not that it was a long wait by any means, but the whole point of me calling ahead was to NOT WAIT inside the restaurant. Not a big deal, just thought I'd mention. $10 ORIGINAL KATSU SANDO: ($10.78 with tax) I looked ahead at the menu before I called, however I had a really hard time finding their "default" protein for each of their sandwiches. I realized it was inconsistent as some menus floating around showed that the OG KATSU SANDO comes with "pork cutlet" but the menu inside their restaurant and the one most frequently posted on YELP does not have that information so for first time customers or for those not wanting to search multiple places like I did, they might want to change it. Alternate protein choices are: (1) PORK CUTLET (fried), (2) CHICKEN CUTLET (fried), (3) GRILLED CHICKEN. The price point was AMAZING! Like where can you find a $10 sandwich anywhere these days? I call it a steal! The bread was SO FLUFFY, I thought I'd have a hard time biting into it because it was so THICK, but it was SOFT and easy to bite into. The ingredients are so simple, but the flavor was bursting and delicious! I was instantly impressed. Great quality Katsu sando, juicy Katsu. I especially loved the thicker golden brown toast. Hesitated taking a bite because it was packed full with fillings. Stopped by around 3pm between classes at CSUF and it came out super fast. With the different varieties, need to come back to try them all! read more

Absolutely go here. Soooo tasty! They can make most of the sandwiches vegetarian by substituting the meat with their potato balls. It's so good; I wish I lived closer to go often. read more

Amazing lunch!! I had the Chipotle Asiago Sandwich and it had a fantastic kick to it! I was pretty full after finishing half the sandwich but I ended up finishing the entire thing because it was so good I couldn't put it down lol. It's definitely worth the price! I also ordered a side of potato balls that you have to try with your order - it comes with a dipping sauce that makes the potato so tasty! There's no indoor dining due to COVID and all the employees wear a mask and gloves while enforcing social distancing. I have to try the What The Frick Fries next time!
