I came by here on Saturday during the in-between hours of lunch and dinner. My kiddo just finished her swim meet at the nearby high school and she was famished. We wanted something quick and something different from a typical fast food joint or sandwich joint. Boy, am I glad I found this location. Mr. Katsu is located in a small strip mall that you could easily overlook if you didn't know it existed here. There are a bunch of different shops, but only Mr. Katsu has a red sign to help it stand out. The shop itself is decorated with a variety of different artwork (you can definitely tell they are fans of the LA Lakers) with a chalkboard with their menu. The menu is to the right as you come in, easily missed if it weren't for the staff informing us of the menu. The menu itself has a variety of items from katsu sandwiches to bowls. The cool part if they take everyday sandwiches and add a katsu (pork based with the option for chicken or veggie as requested) as the main source of protein. For example, my kiddo got a bacon avocado sandwich with pork katsu. The sandwich bread is reminiscent of Texas toast. She absolutely destroyed the sandwich and said it was one of the most delicious sandwiches she had. I opted for something different and got the KFB (Kalbi Fusion Bowl). The KFB has Kalbi as its main source of protein over a bed of rice and cabbage with corn and miscellaneous picked vegetables with a spicy mayo covering it. The protein was a little dry, but other than that the flavor was great. Each bite was delicious and you could tell that there was TLC put into it. Saw this on a recommendation of spots to eat in Fullerton so I decided to check it out because I was pretty hungry. Didn't know what to expect so when I arrived, there was a lot of parking in the lot, as this spot was located in a small strip mall. The inside was really cool and casual. I love the sandwich art on the wall and appreciated the chalkboard wall menu as there were so many options to choose to eat. I asked one of the workers at the register a comparison between two sandwiches but he didn't try one of them so I couldn't get a real suggestion between the ones I wanted to try. But in the end after the thought and look at the menu, I decided to try the Katsu Curry sandwich and the W.T.F.F. (What The Frick Fries) and wow I was surprised by both of it. The fries were saucy and actually really delicious. I do wish there were a little more meat though with the fries but it was still really good. The katsu and toasted bread was actually a big surprise for me as it was really crunchy in a good way and not dry at all. I don't normally like most katsus so this was a plus for me. I drive by this place all the time and their logo always draws my attention, so I finally decided to give it a shot! The cashier taking my order was really nice and helpful. I asked for her recommendations and she said I should try the original katsu sandwich with their potato balls instead of fries. It was empty when I got there and it took around 15 minutes to get my food. It was more expensive than I thought it would be for a sandwich combo. My total was a little under $20. I was more disappointed when I opened the box and there was only 3 of the potato balls. If I had known you only get so many I would've gotten the fries instead to justify the price. The food was good. The sandwich was the best I've had from a few different places. The coleslaw wasn't bitter and the dipping sauce they give you for the potato balls was amazing drizzled onto the sandwich. Even though you only got a few of the potato balls they were soooooo good. They're like fried balls of mashed potato that are crispy on the outside but soft and mushy on the inside. I really wish you would get more with the order!! Their sodas aren't flat but they taste watered down. The food itself was a 7/10, I'd come back to order to-go. Just not on a consistent basis as I can get cheaper, bigger portions elsewhere. I ordered to-go, but due to the wait time I sat around for a while. The inside is pretty clean, but you have to walk through the back kitchen/storage area to use the restroom. It's kind of far back and not visually pleasing, the bathroom is also pretty old and dingy. Really good katsu! My friend and I came here for a study break since we were at a tea shop nearby, and were so glad we did. We were the only customers in the shop at the time, and the restaurant itself was very clean and quiet. My friend and I both got the classic katsu sandwich which comes with a pork cutlet catsu, slaw, and sauce on their brioche bread. My friend and I made both of our sandwiches a combo, which came with a drink and potato puffs (all pictured). The sandwich was delicious and the potato puffs were the bomb! However, I do wish the bread was not brioche as it was quite heavy in itself and took a lot of the flavor away from the katsu. My only downside with this restaurant was the location. The restaurant is located right next to a sports bar, so the parking lot got pretty rowdy. Soft and squishy, but thick cut, and it holds up the sandwich as it is toasted. Menu chalked up on the blackboard for aesthetics. Prices are $10-$14 per sandwich with sides like the puffs seems to be the other highlight of this place tho we didn't get any this time around. We got the regular and the goat cheese umeboshi. The wait for the sandwich is about 10 -15 minutes after ordering on a Saturday. I do love the breads here though I think ours was toasted a bit more than I like. Because of that and the thickness of the bread, it was very....well, bready. I can understand why they go with such a thick slice because of the slaw and the katsu is sauced. What I didn't like about the regular katsu is that I could NOT taste the crispiness of the fried goodness in both sandwiches. Though the saw I do have to say was pretty fresh and crispy. The goat cheese version of this sandwich does have a stronger taste if you like that. The sandwiches are big enough to share and definitely cheaper than those LA katsu places. Admittedly, the toasts are quite prominent, so it would have been nice to add a little more pickled vegetables or a slaw to balance it out a bit more. It comes with a cup of curry "gravy" to dip or pour over the sandwich. The curry is quite light, so it's not very salty, spicy, or overwhelming. Personally, I wouldn't have minded upping its richness of umami flavor by a little bit. The side of "puffs" are essentially mini potato croquettes.
