The menu (found on their website, downloadable version that has descriptions of each item) says the meal comes steamed vegetables, coleslaw, and your choice of rice, mashed potatoes, fries, sweet potato fries or onion straws. We ordered it with the mash. When we picked it up, we mentioned the mashed potatoes and they were confused as to what we were asking for. We got a side of mash and proceeded home. While the chicken was not bad, the meal was served with linguini. No vegetables, no slaw, and unless we asked, to mash/rice/fries etc. not sure why it's written on the menu that way if it's not served that way. Also, the mashed potatoes weren't good. They tasted like instant but I know they weren't because of the consistency. I would not recommend. read more

The freshest fish in town. I love coming here with their newly built interior. Complimentary crab dip (very small and mainly cream cheese) with sesame bread sticks served. Soft shell crab sammy tastes fresh off the boat, but is on the smaller side so may leave you wanting more. Have had scrumptious salads on special too--seared ahi tuna or blackened mahi mahi. Always large portions and anything including their candied walnuts is a must. Be warned their blackened seasoning here is much spicier than most. Highly recommend fried oysters as an app. Good portion and a light, fluffy yet crisp exterior with a juicy, fresh interior. Nice sized oysters. Recommend the yummiest haystack onions (forget what they're called on the menu) versus their bland fries. Don't forget a cup of lobster bisque soup, mmmh! Valet parking available though it's a very small lot, so I pass by them. BYOB! And moderately priced overall. Downside--service tends to be slow, yet friendly. About a month ago, I had dinner with family and friends at Mr. Shrimp. The dining experience was pleasant and the staff was accommodating to everyone present. As a wheelchair user and person who experiences Cerebral Palsy, the restrooms were spacious and the entrance of the building provided easy access for me. Upon leaving the restaurant, I encountered someone parked in the space designated for individuals with disabilities. The vehicle belonged to the owner of Mr. Shrimp, and we were told by him that individuals with disabilities usually call ahead when dining there and he moves his truck. Seriously?! This explanation was unacceptable and made me feel excluded from the way non-disabled customers can experience dining. To have to call ahead of time to guarantee access to proper parking, designated for individuals such as myself, is demeaning and violates my rights. The owner is able-bodied and could walk into the restaurant, instead of making it difficult for individuals with disabilities to have access. As a result, I would not recommend this restaurant. This incident and the owner's explanation was unfortunate as it was a pleasant experience otherwise. read more

Most people that crab charge between $200.00 and $250.00 a bushel but these dishonest rats would have you pay nearly $1500.00 for a bushel. My shrimp and scallop rigatoni was Ok, but not even close to Fratello's version. The scallops were undercooked. There was very little sear making the scallop soft and mushy. It was missing those sinewy verticle fibers. We're at Mr. Shrimp and my wife gets...... chicken marsala. Just OK. Again not close to Fratello's version. The deserts were small and average. Was very disappointed in mine and my partners food . You could tell the veggies he had were frozen and undercooked as was the fish he had. May shrimp camping is made better at home. One of my shrimp had an iodine taste which isn't good. After speaking with other people that had been there they also said they would not return. The food was very quickly prepared. The fare was basic flounder thickly cut and broiled. My entree included rice and steamed vegetables of broccoli and carrots. The mashed potatoes were standard, and the steamed vegetables were...bland. Salt or something with flare would help this place out. Come here and get the roasted littleneck clams and a beer. I had the chicken francese which was fine and as I expected at a mostly seafood restaurant. It came hot and plentiful, although no side salad which I always like. My companion had the lobster bisque which she said "looked and tasted like dirty water with salt" basically no flavor. She also had stuffed shrimp - the stuffing was good but the shrimp were small and overcooked. Sweet potato fries and veggies were okay. Ambiance was basic, large room and busy the whole time we were there. They take reservations- which you need even on a Tuesday night at 5:30. If you visit Belmar, NJ, you have to stop in at Mr. Shrimp. The place is extremely clean, and the food is fresh and very, very good.

This is your typical jersey Shore seafood place. They do the staples and they do it really well. I'm talking your broiled, fried and combo platters. The stuffed salmon and the stuffed shrimp were pretty damn good. Honestly, I find that fried calamari rarely travels well - so we warmed back up in the oven and they were quite tasty - and they gave us ALOT! I mean we could have made an entire meal out of just that! We've tried the sandwiches as well. Fresh and delicious! They definitely pack it on the sandwiches as well. Onion straws never disappoint - but hit or miss on the fries. More often than not, they've been soggy. On the market side of the house, they have your basic shrimp, clams, lobster, salmon (and organic), cod, tuna and halibut. Once we get into summer I'm sure we'll see more snapper and mahi as well. I've only gotten cod and it was fairly good. Its the closest seafood market to my house so another plus. Stick to the classics or the sandwiches and you will not be disappointed! read more

My mother in law recently turned 90. She lives nearby in the Seabrook development and several of her friends have spoken highly of Mr Shrimp. So, we made a reservation. The location doesn't scream Seafood. The atmosphere is hardly celebratory. Just a big open barn of a restaurant. Yet, the food was superb. After a tepid welcome from the front desk person, we had a look at the menu. For apps, fried oysters, fried calamari and tuna tartare. For mains, three one and a quarter pound lobsters and swordfish. Food was delivered promptly. The oysters were fabulous. Big plump suckers in a light breading with a good cocktail sauce. Calamari was tender with a nice marinara and my wife's tartare was fresh with mango, avocado and seaweed. She loved it. Lobsters were cooked perfectly and easy to crack open. Served with corn. Nice. My swordfish was an incredibly skimpy portion. A small triangle of fish that I consumed in about half a dozen bites. Yet it too was cooked perfectly. Good thing I had corn and onion strings. I'll have something else next time. I hate leaving a restaurant hungry. We had a very friendly server who checked on us and handled our wine properly. A note to the management. Two girlfriends and I had dinner here after a perfect day on the beach. We got lucky, because we hadn't thought to make reservations and they did get busy! We arrived around 6:30, just before the big crowds! Had the grilled shrimp and indulged in sweet potato fries as my side. It was served with slaw and a generous portion of steamed fresh veggies, that night broccoli and some carrots (I don't know if that changes with availability on other nights). Came here on Saturday evening while on a weekend getaway to Spring Lake/Belmar. This restaurant was recommended by friends who live locally, so we decided to try it out. The place was packed at 630 pm even during the "off season/local summer" so if you definitely want to eat here, I would call and make a reservation. It's also BYOB, but there are a few liquor stores nearby/within walking distance. The service was excellent, attentive, but not pushy. We ordered the peel and eat shrimp (they give you 10-12 of them for $8.99, what???) as an appetizer and then the stuffed shrimp for dinner. The peel and eat shrimp were great, I loved the spicy cocktail sauce. My entree was also delicious! I got 6 huge shrimp stuffed with lump crab meat, with fries, coleslaw and veggies. Needless to say, it was entirely too much food, but it was good. BF got the crab cakes, which he loved. Being a New Yorker, I thought this place was very reasonable for fresh seafood. Our bill came to under $70 and you had to roll us out of there! I wish I had taken pictures but I couldn't wait to start eating. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. read more

Very disappointed in my dinner experience tonight. My fiancé and I stopped here in the spring as part of the Belmar Dine & Discover food tour but only had small bites so we came back tonight for a date. Our server didn't come to our table once after taking our order except for when we asked her coworkers to find our server. We had empty drinks for at least 10 minutes waiting for refills. When we asked our server for refills, a different coworker brought them to us. Our dinners didn't come to the table until an hour after we arrived, delivered by a staff member other than our server. I ordered fried flounder and my fiancé got a shrimp and 8 oz steak combo. She asked for a medium steak and got a very well done steak. My breaded flounder had no flavor, and I couldn't get any service to our table for 25 minutes so I could ask for cocktail sauce in order to make it taste better. I waited tables for 7-8 years and was stiffed by customers after providing much better service. I like tipping good servers what they deserve, so I felt very conflicted when I felt my server didn't deserve a tip more than a couple dollars. I ended up leaving a 15% tip only because my fiancé and I only had large bills to pay cash since we weren't able to get our bill collected to pay with a card. Manager was in the dining room talking to a single table for 20 minutes and didn't stop anywhere else or even look around to see how dinner service was going. I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend going here to anyone who actually wants a nice night out. read more

My date and I arrived at Mr. Shrimp and had to wait a little bit for a booth. We could have sat at a regular table but my date wanted a booth. It wasn't a long wait so everything was fine. We were seated and greeted with breadsticks and their crab dip to munch on while we perused over the menu. The dip was so good we asked for some more. Our server informed us that we'd have to pay for a refill which we gladly accepted. We started with the fried calamari which was quite tasty and the temp was very hot. Sometimes you get it and it has been sitting for awhile. These were definitely right out of the fryer. Big plus! I ordered the fried shrimp sandwich with sweet potato fries while my date had the fried cod sandwich. Both were very tasty. I filled up on the calamari and crab dip so much that I only ate the shrimp and didn't make a sandwich out of it. It was still very good. The Cole slaw was very tasty as well.
