So, this is a drive in, a dive of sorts. I am giving it four stars for that type of food. The service was fast, friendly and efficient and the food was, well, crispy, fried, hot and greasy. The fries and onion rings were standouts as was the root beer. Order the root beer, it's fantastic. I wasn't a huge fan of the tenderloin, it's not the best one I've tried. Maybe next time I would try a burger. The kids had a hot dog and a corn dog, and really, what can you say about those?? Decided to stop here after dinner tonight, pulled up had my lights on for service as instructed. Another car pulls in. The server comes out and looks at me says "I'll be right there" but basically runs to take the other cars order as if I wasn't sitting there first.! After a visit to the Indy 500 Museum, we stopped by here for a bite before heading out of town. There were several cars out front waiting for carhop service, but we opted to eat on the covered patio so as not to possibly spill food all over the car. We sat at one of the mesh topped picnic tables as we thought it would be cleaner than the solid topped ones. That wasn't to be as it was so greasy the menus stuck to the table top! I had a foot long hot dog which was tasteless and a cherry milk shake that was great. Others had burgers and we split an order of french fries, but they weren't eaten as they were cold. Our server was friendly and had no problem with separate checks and a couple of special requests. The price was reasonable, but not for what you got as it wasn't good. This place is the best little drive in restaurant I've been to. I love the super burger they have there. It's just such a big, juicy, meaty little thing with a lot of condiments slathered all over it. It's really quite a beautiful piece to sink your teeth in. I like that you can keep the cup for life. This place just has a cool vintage vibe and I think it would be a great affordable place for a date if you just want to go and chill in your car. Food: 1 or 2 stars Nostalgia: 4 or 5 stars Mug 'N' Bun is like reminiscing about the "good ol' days" when cars were "better", life was "better", etc. Then you get into a "performance" car from the 60's or 70's and realize that it drives like crap, it's slower than a modern family car like the Honda Accord, it has more rust than steel, and if you ever get into a minor fender bender in it you are going to be dead or a quadriplegic. The food here is food. I think that's the best and most accurate way of describing it. You could eat it and you would gain sustenance and postpone starvation. I would be shocked if people actually came here for the food - it's for the nostalgia. The few people who come here for the food need to get out more. Three stars for being "different", but just keep in mind that different is not always better. I have been here twice now and that's one time too many. read more

Not much to say for this place, other than the fact that I was wildly disappointed. For a Sunday afternoon, it was fairly slow. Five tables came in after us and were served their root beer first, with the root beer being the only reason for any stars. Though our tenderloin, hot dog, sweet potato fries, and fried zucchini showed potential, all of it was served cold, which added to the let down. The last time I was in Indy I asked people where I should go if I want something with local flavor and no one could really generate an answer. Well, thanks to my love of TV food porn I discovered the tenderloin sandwich. Maybe the Hoosiers have become complacent or forgot about this unusual sandwich. A local whom I trust suggested I go here instead of Eddie's so I drove about 20 minutes out of the way to grab a taste of Indy on my way home. It's kind of decadent to take a pork tenderloin, pound it flat, deep fry it and put it on a bun but this is America and if cheap cuts are good fried, why not gild the lily and fry the expensive ones too? I asked the carhop to give me one dressed how it's most commonly ordered and got one with lettuce, tomato and mayo, chili fries and a root beer. The sandwich was pretty good. It didn't change my life but I would definitely get it again. I might try it with some mustard. The chili fries didn't really do it for me but the chili would definitely be good on a dog. In hindsight I should have got some onion rings. Oh well. The root beer good. It was very sweet and a smaller portion would have suited me but then I wouldn't have a plastic cup to add to my food trophy room. My wife and I were on our way back to Chicago from Cincy when we got hungry. We wanted to try something local and this place popped up. Well actually, the giant tenderloin sandwich caught my attention. All the pictures I saw on Yelp were crazy so I decided to check it out. We were NOT disappointed. First off, this place is a drive-in but there is also a restaurant next to it. If you go to the drive-in just turn on your lights and the lady will come get your order. It's a HUGE menu so take your time and find what you want. We were hungry at this point so we tried anything we haven't seen before. We got the tenderloin sandwich (amazing!), a couple of shakes (also amazing!), and the funnel cake fries (omg! new and amazing!). All in all, the food was great and the service was great. My wife did not like her shake at first but the lady let us get another for just a dollar more. Not bad, IMO. I probably won't be coming by this way again, but if I do, I know where to go. read more

Fantastic find. On my first Indy 500 trip, my father/brother in laws took me here for some great grub. It has all outdoor seating which can bit of a drag depending if seats are filled and you are left with one in the sun. Service as well can be a hinderance or a benefit depending on your timing. On the day before the Indy 500, it wasn't slammed but the tables were all filled which meant we didn't get lots of attention from the under manned staff. Not a problem for us as we weren't in a hurry. Still a friendly wait staff. The food was delicious. I got the fried tenderloin sandwich and a medium root beer. If you enjoy plenty of beverage like I do, get a quart size of their root beer. Homemade and delicious. Frys are standard. Nothing to shine. Wish I had known the onion rings were the standout for this joint before. All in all, a nice place to grab some grub and get on with your day on a full stomach. read more

Went to Mug-n-Bun yesterday for the first time with a friend who grew up in Indy. I ordered a cheeseburger ($2.40), she ordered a corn dog ($2-ish), we split an order of onion rings ($3-ish), and we both got root beer (not on the menu I could see, but the whole meal was $14-ish). The onion rings and the root beer were OBVIOUSLY the best parts of the meal, which was good because those are what I had pinned my expectations on. I expected the burger to be of the purchased frozen variety (and it was) but it was still acceptable. I can't speak for my friend's corn dog but she seemed to like it. We contemplated aloud getting a family-size order of onion rings to split and the waitress said, "No, the regular will be big enough for you to share." This was solid advice. Our order was hot and delicious, although they cooled fast and I could see how it could be easy to get one that was already lukewarm. I thought the breading was good--flavorful and crispy--and in the right amount. I got a medium root beer (24 oz.) and my friend got a large (32 oz.). She told me that she and her grandmother would come when she was younger and buy 1/2-gallon or gallon jugs of it to make floats at home. She described the flavor as caramel-y with a hint of vanilla and she was right. Yes it was very sweet but I really enjoyed it. I am a sucker for in-house root beer and this didn't disappoint. I think if I mixed it with high quality vanilla ice cream my eyes might roll back in my head with pleasure. I didn't grow up here nor did I have a childhood experience anywhere else with a drive-in restaurant (although I did eat at one a few years ago in New Jersey, almost identical to this place), so nostalgia isn't a draw. The third one said just a minute. After some time she finally showed. Nice lady took our order. While waiting another customer parked next to us. They were promptly waited on. Soon their order came. Honestly, I love the food here! I live very close by and frequent it as often as I can. I only did four instead of five stars because they don't allow you to tip on the debit or credit card. I've actually stopped going very often because of this. I rarely carry cash, and I don't like to order if I can't tip the carhop. If they'd add this feature, I know they'd get so much more business!
