The only reason I am giving it 2 stars is......don't use a credit card. Once the waitress sees that she turns into the rudest server. From going there in the past and also working for basically tips, I know they do not allow tips on the card. I always come prepared to give a cash tip. She was not very friendly once she saw I was paying with a card. I did give her a cash tip, however, it would have been double if she wasn't so rude. read more

Well we went last year and the year before that ...and each time were not surprized they are always working to serve and be the best. We had rootbeer, double burger's and onion rings...AND let's not forget the onion nibbles....yummy!!! This year a friend used the rootbeer for a drink competition and it was so great!! YEAH!! Mug 'n Bun is nostalgic Americana at its finest. This is a drive-up hamburger stand that has been in the same spot for over forty years. When you pull in to the lot you can either have the waitresses come to you (unfortunately not on roller-skates) or you can walk up to the window and eat at the picnic tables on location. Everything I've tried here is fantastic and they brew their own Root Beer which is worth the drive from Indianapolis alone. The first time that I realized I loved this place was when I ordered a double cheeseburger. Not only is it tasty, but there is a slice of white bread that separates the two patties. One piece of white bread in the middle of the sandwich. How old school is that?? read more

This is the WORST place in Indy. It was good years ago, but now it is terrible. Servers are ok, not very personable. Food is hot GARBAGE! Not even good enough to called dog crap. Update, the Tenderloins are the frozen ones from Kroger and Frozen Hamburgers. This place keeps getting worse. Bathrooms had used needles piled up in the trashcan. Mug N Bun is like an ex-boyfriend. After you haven't been there in a while, you remember some things as being good. But when you go back, you remember exactly why you broke up in the first place. Yes, this is a drive-in, so my expectations for gourmet food were low. However, after visiting this establishment several times, after the last visit, I swear I'll never return. I don't know if our waitress was highly medicated or just lazy, but she was not with it whatsoever. We were greeted and got our drinks right away, but everything went downhill from there. We must have waited nearly 25 minutes for our food to come out, and of course it was cold once we got it. Could we have complained and had them redo our orders? At another establishment, maybe; but not here because after our waitress dropped off our food, we didn't see her for another 30 minutes. Another table near us was seated as our food was being dropped off and their drink order was taken at that time. They patiently waited just to get drinks MUCH longer than I would have tolerated. We had to flag down another waitress just to get ours to come out so that we could pay. When we were leaving, the other table was still waiting for their drinks. I don't understand the appeal of this place, unless it's nostalgia. The food is not good and I wonder what they do with their profits because the entire outdoor seating area is in dire need of maintenance and repair. read more

Ordered a triple burger and fries. Burger was as far from real beef as you can get and the fries were cold and soggy. Was my first visit in about 15 years and sad to see that it is no where near what it was when grandma and grandpa used to take us there. read more

Enjoy the food here and pretend that calories don't count! A wonderful array of any and all deep fried food (and healthier options) that you can imagine, Mug N' Bun has been serving the Indianapolis area since 1960 and is still going strong. During the summer months, it can be hard to find an open parking spot, but don't fret, they also have a picnic area that is full service. In the winter months, you can choose to blast the heat at full force and imagine that summer is just around the corner, or you can stay cozy in their Dine In area so that you can enjoy your food without the risk of frostbite. Like most drive-in's, Mug N Bun's hot dogs, tenderloins, and burgers are a hit. Of course you also will need to order a large root beer to wash it all down and don't forget to order the onion nibbler's if available. The nibblers consist of the center of the onion, deep fried and served with ranch. If you love the onions rings, the nibblers are a must! read more

I'm posting this with a 5 star review with a caveat- it's great for what it is. They make great fast, fun, greasy food to enjoy as the occasional rude, fun thing to do to interrupt your metabolism. First, don't forget the root beer. If you hate root beer, get it anyway. I dislike root beer immensely, but will always drink theirs. Do yourself a favor and get a large side of hot pepper cheese balls, and ask for cocktail sauce to dip them in. The corn nuggets are tasty as well. Turn your lights on for service! What a surprise, old school drive-in eateries still exist. Sorry Sonic this is the real deal! Just have to say the food was pretty great. The foot long dog with the split top bun was spot on and the burgers were well cooked. if you order the fries or the onion rings there is enough to share. The root beer is totally awesome! Being new to town, we have been told by a few people that we "had" to try the Mug n' Bun. I can see why people love this place, especially if you grew up eating here. There is some serious nostalgia factor going on. We split the pork tenderloin sandwich, and it was great. We were less excited about the onion rings, which were too greasy for our taste, and the root beer, which was very sweet. The service was also a bit slow, although that is a sign of how many other people were there, apparently loving this joint. If you're in the mood for some classic Americana, this could be your place. read more

You gotta love fried foods. They may not be the best things for you but honestly, they're totally tasty. I had the mug n bun special which was a single with american cheese and bacon on toast, not a bun. I added lettuce, tomato, and mustard. On the side I had the sweet potato fries (with a great cinnamon sugar rub) and the onion rings. While the burger was alright, the sides were the standouts. I loved the onion rings and the "regular" order is more than large enough to share. Or, if you're like me, eat them all yourself and then run an extra half hour the next day. =D read more

I just tried this place for the first time the other day and I totally understand the quiet vibe because it was cold and rainy and I'm guessing it is more fun in summer but man it was to quiet. Plus the server was not very nice. Now on to the food I had the super burger which was just okay I didn't expect much but it didn't get me either. But man the pepper jack balls were amazing and Mac and cheese fried item was very good. Now the root beer besttttt everrrrrrr. Behind Mug 'N' Bun is an offshoot that does pizza and fried chicken. My wife wanted a "greasy" pizza and we thought of this place. I loved the down home feel of Mama making my pizza and the tight springs that held that screen door tight. It all said "local". We got the pie back and it just hit the spot on what we were looking for. We went back a second time and will be back for the third. read more

You guys, this is an Indy staple. It's an old drive in and you get exactly what you expect. Nothing fancy and that's what I'm looking for in a drive in! Great tenderlions and pretty good coneys (even if I have to specify that means I want onion and mustard - excuse the Michigander in me). The root beer is outstanding. Tonight we went to Mug nBun for dinner. The quality has sure gone down hill. We ordered the onion rings and most of mine didn't even have batter on it and wasn't hot at all but that is going to happen when you eat in the building because they have to bring across the parking lot. Classic drive-in food. If you get a double cheeseburger, there's a slice of Wonder bread in the middle, soaking up all the burger goodness. Onion rings are huge, crunchy on the outside, and chewy in the middle (this is a good thing). Coney dogs are excellent, and the hot dogs are always fresh, never rubbery. The root beer alone is worth pulling in and rolling down your window for. Creamy, slightly fizzy, and sweeter the closer they get to the bottom of the barrel, it's always a bit different and always delicious. You can get it in either the traditional frosted glass mug, or a giant, take-home yellow plastic cup. It's been around for 43, 46, or 47 years, depending on which sign you read. Places don't stay that long unless they're really, really good. read more
