This is a great place to get dinner before hitting your favorite bars on Polk. They had the freshest, tastiest sashimi! We got the Spoon Set A, I dont even know what 4 fishes they were but they were all great. Even my friend who doesnt particularly like slimy things enjoyed them. We also got the monkfish liver, toro handrolls, victoria secret roll and the spicy tuna roll. Plus, the waitress was so nice - they were fine with accomadating no cucumbers in our rolls. Starting with the best, but honestly everything was the "best" O-toro Nigiri ($18/2): sooo melt in mouth that after eating one, we had to order another! Mr. Hokkaido ($16) : these scallops were amazing. Incredibly juicy, sweet, just perfect. No words. Must order two. Shrek ($16): this is one of the more interesting ones because of how it's presented. It's crab, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura that's stuffed in an avocado ball - so the outside is super creamy, and then once you bite into it, you'll taste all the seafood. The place is very expensive, so I'd say - spend your money wisely. Hot appetizers - chicken kara-age was great, and a generous portion too. Jalapeño poppers were bland. Main course - Raw fish was amazing, both sushi and sashimi. The house rolls were a bit bland, and didn't showcase fish flavor. They can also make rolls that are not on the menu. We were here with our 11yo picky-eater, and she wanted a California roll, which they were only happy to make. Great spot for sushi with a fun Happy Hour Menu! We made reservations for a Friday at opening (5pm). This particular time didn't warrant a reservation, but one can never be too sure these days. We ordered the Jessica Alba roll, Big Boss and Chicken Karaage off of the Happy Hour Menu and a glass of Prosecco. Both rolls were excellent and the Karaage was good but the least favorite item of the entire meal. We then each chose to order the 10 piece Nigiri Omakase, which was *chefs kiss* amazing. They suggested we eat from left to right (least to most fatty) and we both progressively enjoyed each piece as we moved right. I highly recommend the hell of a deal $60 Omakase. This place usually has a super long line during the weekends so I came here with my coworkers after work. It was empty when we sat down at 6pm and filled up the entire restaurant when we left at 7:45pm Overall we got a couple appetizers (karage - the spicy one was better, veggie tempura), 7 rolls to share and 1 bottle of kikusui sake for the table to share. Some people have to have a favorite neighborhood coffee shop, grocery store, or bar. In our family we have to establish our favorite "go to" Sushi spot. This is # 2 son's favorite local sushi spot. Poor guy is studying for his last financial certification, a ball buster for sure; and he is stressed out studying. We decided to take him out to get a healthy meal and diversion. So we ventured into da ci-tay near his cribbage to do so. Upon his arrival, he was shocked it was practically empty. "Normally we have to wait 60 minutes to get a table as it's always packed!" He said. Well, it was only 6:30 pm on a Tuesday we claimed and sho nuff by the time we exited all the tables in side and a couple outside on the sidewalk were taken. We let him order and literally ordered all their specialty rolls minus the wagyu beef one. Each one had its own distinct flavor of freshness and creativity. That one cooked in blue flame tho! It even had a char grilled essence! Service was abundant, but that may have been in anticipation of the herds of hungry folk soon to descend upon the tiny spot. Seemed like 20 different people waited on us. I'd say his local sushi spot was worthy of that monicker. We may just have to return to celebrate him passing the test soon! read more

Hidden gem on Polk Street! All of the dishes we ordered were amazing and the fish quality was very fresh. The food came out relatively quickly and the service was decent. The highlight of our meal was the ginger creme brûlée! If you haven't had this before -- a must try! The restaurant is a nice place for date night but runs on the smaller side. I've been here three times and this is a solid spot. My friends tried the omakase and said it was super fresh. I tried the Victoria secret's roll and the fish wasn't fishy and full of flavor. Try the Shrek appetizer, it's a delicious avocado ball with tuna inside (no rice). So tasty! I'm obsessed!! The short ribs were okay, but I would probably skip on them next time. Not super flavorful. I was able to make a reservation for Friday relatively easily, despite it being busy while we were eating. our waitress was very sweet and recommended a sake to try, as well as the truffle hamachi appetizer. both were extremely delicious and a great addition to our meal! we also added on an order of takoyaki because i have no self control. we ordered the nigiri and sashimi sampler to share (not the omakase, but the other option) and it was more than enough for the two of us to enjoy. the slices of fresh fish are thick and super buttery. and can we talk about this presentation? almost too pretty to eat! overall i'd love to revisit and try some rolls or other menu items to get a better idea of what Nara has to offer :) read more

Really enjoyed Nara. Just picked this place randomly not knowing what to expect. First off I got lucky with street parking, a lot of reviews say it's hell around here but I didn't have that experience personally on a Sunday at 5PM -- maybe come early. Place is small but cozy and we were sat quickly, no wait. I think it was happy hour when we came. We got: 1) Chicken Karaage: Very well made. Noticeably a good balance of meat with the fried crispiness for a good balance and the sauce provided was good too. 2) 10pc Omakase Nigiri: Loved it, they brought it out on long trays and explained each piece of fish to us. The fish was fresh and delicious. I think it was $60 per person which felt pretty fair for how good it was. 3) Sapporo: We ordered beer which was $6 each and to my surprise they actually brought out a decent sized bottle for each of our orders, which ended up being closer to 24-30oz rather than a single glass. Really liked this place, I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

We came here on a whim to celebrate our friends birthday. It was a great choice because both the food and service was amazing. We got a hamachi appetizer which was a great start to our meal. We all got the 10 pc Omakase that had premium fishes. It was so good, my favorite was the Amberjack Nigiri and the Chutoro Nigiri. The Amberjack had a great chew, probably one of the best I've ever had. The Chutoro had truffle salt on it which was such a great surprise. Yummy overall!! Cozy sushi restaurant in a prime location on Polk Street. I came here for dinner on a Thursday night - they were pretty busy, but have a convenient reservation and waitlist system through Yelp. I tried the Hamachi Truffle, as well as the Sake Bomb roll, and both were delicious. You can really taste the quality and freshness of the fish and it isn't overpowered by sauces and other add ons. The service was great and prices are very fair given what other places in SF charge for sushi. Glad to have a solid sushi spot in the neighborhood and I'll be back for more! My first time here, fiancé has been a few times. Service was attentive and the outdoor seating booth felt private (for Polk street!). Our favorites were the agedashi tofu and sake bomb roll. Everything was fresh and hit the spot. Their dipping sauces really stood out here as well. We plan on making this one of our go-to sushi spots in the neighborhood. Bonus points: my fiancé left her purse hanging on the chair when we left, and when we came back, the waitress had it there waiting for her. Kurosawa Sake- we enjoyed the dry smooth flavor, paired well with the food and was refreshing on a hot day. Karaage-love the subtle light breading, honey mustard dipping sauce was addictive! Agedashi tofu- cut into nice smaller sized bites, plentiful fish flakes and umami agedashi sauce. So good! Truffle hamachi- nice jalapeño crunch and burst of truffle flavor. Good combo with the spice, onion, jalapeño and truffle. While it was tasty, it was too saucy for us and therefore our least favorite item we tried. Sake bomb roll- yummy flavors and fresh fish. Fried onion on top gives it a nice crunch. Geso kushi age- tasty, but fried squid tentacles had a bit too much batter and the pickly tartar sauce is a little too bold so use sparingly. read more

Its not a real Omakase experience when they place all the items in front of you simultaneously. Nonetheless it was still a wonderful sushi experience. Got the 7-piece & 10-piece nigiri omakase. The nigiri (included medium grade toro) tasted fresh, with only small amount of rice beneath which was ideal. We added the mother of all O-toro from Japan ($17 for 2 slices), it was absolutely sublime & buttery. Its probably best to enjoy it last as it will render all other sushi pedestrian. The butter 4 truffle (seared butter fish) was very good. Chicken karaage was lightly battered & relatively juicy, loved the dipping sauce. Its not the best we had but descent. Ordered a 375ml bottle of Nigori white peach sweet sake to enhance the dining experience, YOLO. It was smooth, delish & deceptively dangerous @10% ETOH. Have no fear, CPMC has an excellent liver transplant program next door. Our pleasant surprise du jour was the mochi ice cream. We got the triple flavors: matcha, strawberry & mango. The texture was fantastic and the way a perfect mochi ice cream should be: light, soft & doughy mochi exterior with buttery & smooth ice cream in the middle. The texture was consistent throughout, unlike the "just defrosted out of the freezer experience" in most places Overall a great dining experience in a small casual sushi restaurant.
