Having to try sushi in Japan, Taiwan, LA, and NY, Nara is on par with decent sushi in San Francisco. Menu was fairly priced and the sushi was decent. The hamachi truffle was too salty. But the tasting menu was fresh with different variety of fish including the fatty tuna. Spider roll did its job by adding that crunch. Great place to have out with friends. Staff was very friendly and helping in explaining the tasting menu. They even help coordinated a birthday cake we brought. There is a waitlist before coming in but the wait isn't that long.
Nara's more recently become a sovereign staple in my lunch routine; I order it at least once a week, a high commendation considering the myriad of great SF lunch spots. The sushi lunch specials (maki and inari or maki sets) are simply unmatched in flavor, portion, and quality. My personal favorite being the Giant Roll and Miss Hamachi maki and inari set. The maki are formidable, leaning almost improbable in scale, given every morsel's sheer size. Girthy and meaty as if the owners operate with no parsimony. Some of their maki ingredients like cilantro may read as gimmicks but actually blend in harmony with the other components of the roll. Cant say I've had cilantro in sushi, but it's a welcome surprise here. The employees are also incredibly friendly. As I collected yet another lunch order, I casually mentioned how Nara frequently sustains my workdays, and the staff slipped two miso soups into my bag. I also saw that they serve kimbap at lunchtime, a seemingly in-store only offering? It's perplexing this goes unadvertised on DoorDash; as a Korean, this, too, would for sure be a steadfast fixture in my rotation.
Nara was delicious! The burning spider roll was a crowd favorite, alongside the unique, ginger crème brûlée dessert. All the sushi dishes were fresh but definitely lean on the smaller side. The servers were kind and attentive throughout our meal. I appreciated the cozy feel of inside the restaurant- perfect for date night or a casual hang out with friends. Street parking seems tough around the area, but there are plenty of garages around too. Happy to check off another sushi spot in the city. I'll be back if I'm ever in the area again for a concert nearby!
Cute Japanese place in the Polk area with a happy hour from 5-7pm. Made a reservation the day of and came on a weekday. It was good that we made a reservation since it got pretty busy. I got the hot sake which was good and two hand rolls for $7 each. It was an okay size for $7 but the fish was fresh and tasty. We also got a roll to share and karaage. Karaage was just ok but I would come back for the hand rolls.
Thank you Yelpers for steering us to Nara! My hubs and I landed in SFO, took a Lyft to our hotel on Nob Hill, checked in, then walked just a few blocks to Nara. At 5:30pm, we received welcoming and friendly service during their Happy Hour which runs from 5-7pm. The place was clean and neat with low, calming lighting. We ordered the chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, sake kama, big boss roll, and foggy paradise roll. Everything was delicious and came out in a way that allowed us to enjoy every dish at a good, even pace. The chicken karaage was crisp and flavorful. The agedashi tofu was superb with lots of bonito flakes waving atop the fried tofu swimming in a wonderful, savory broth. The sake kama (salmon collar) was broiled nicely and came with a tasty yuzu soy dipping sauce. The big boss roll was full of salmon, bluefin tuna, hamachi, avocado, cucumber. But our favorite was the foggy paradise roll. Who would have thought that a roll with salmon, avocado, shiso leaf, and topped with yellowtail would taste so good?? It was simply *chef's kiss*! Hats off to the whole team at Nara. Thank you for a wonderful dinner on our first night's vacation in SF. We loved it. We will be back.
My friend and I got dinner here on a Thursday night. I made a reservation for 6 PM. There were a decent amount of people there. They have happy hour every day from 5PM-7PM so we got to order off that menu too. Unagi handroll (4/5): This was off the happy hour menu so it was $7. Not as tender as other eel I've had before but still good. Chicken karaage (2.5/5): This karaage didn't have the type of fry coating I liked. It didn't have the typical light and airy crunch. It felt like I was just eating a regular chicken tender or something. It came with a mayo dipping sauce and lemon wedge. Cable car roll (2.5/5): This had shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, topped with blue fin tuna, hamachi, and BBQ sauce. This was definitely my fault and I didn't realize it was going to be topped with BBQ SAUCE. It was a light slather but still weird to me. It would've been better without it but also my fault for not reading the entire description closely. The fish was fresh though. Big boss roll (5/5): This roll had hamachi, bluefin tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, and radish sprout. Since this was a normal sushi roll, I enjoyed it. The portion was good. The rating is more of a 3.5! Nothing was bad. Some things just weren't my taste. I would probably come back and try other items on the menu. I was just not a fan of the BBQ sauce.
Very casual and laid back sushi restaurant with creative rolls and a great nigiri tasting! I loved all the flavors in the chef's choice nigiri and the portions were huge for under $40. It was great value, but I do wish the fish was cut a little thinner as it was a little hard to eat in one bite! Some prices were also not as buttery as I usually like, but I think it's the type of fish served. Regardless, everything felt fresh and flavorful. We also got the cable car roll to share and it was pretty good too! The service was very efficient and attentive, and it wasn't crowded on a Tuesday late at night. We missed their happy hour so prices were more expensive ($60pp after tip) but we were quite satisfied after.

What an amazing spot on Polk! We went during happy hour during the week for my partner's birthday and easily made a reservation on Yelp. We ordered a smattering of the hand rolls (5 different ones, 2 each) plus the big boss roll and some edamame. It was just the right amount of food for 2 and even with a beverage was less than other nearby places. The fish was some of the freshest I've had in the city! The hand rolls were outstanding, rivaling many omakase spots in the city. While the big roll was nice I might just order an additional hand roll next time and I heard the hamachi collar appetizer is fantastic! The service was friendly, fast, and even sang happy birthday to my partner. I can't wait to go back!
I came here to eat something quickly before visiting a neighboring bar, and I enjoyed my dinner very much. I arrived just in time for happy hour and got a $8 salmon hand roll, a chirashi bowl, and some sea salt edamame. So yummy and nourishing. The chirashi was cut so well and the rice was well seasoned! The edamame was also freshly steamed and very warm when I ate it. The hand roll was okay, I'm not typically a temaki type of person but I do enjoy them on occasion! I would definitely come again and try more off their menu.
We were craving sushi and Nara popped up on our search. We decided to give it a try due to the good reviews. We should have done a little more research, especially since we had a couple of kids in our group. There were no teriyaki or noodle options so the kids had to settle for California rolls. I guess we're used to most sushi places having some form of kid friendly options but that's on us for not fully paying attention to the menu before going. The food was good! It definitely hit the spot for the adults. I find the appetizers to be a bit small in size for the price that they're charging though. The sushi we got was standard in size compared to other sushi places. The service was excellent: attentive, knowledgeable, and quick!
Lovely staff, pretty good sushi. Their signature rolls are all very good. I also appreciate that they are open a little later than most restaurants on Polk. I didn't feel that the spoon tasting set wasn't really worth it, as the quality wasn't exceptional and it wasn't very creative. While the service here was been consistently pleasant, there was one disappointing instance. I was told they were gonna do a last call and that I had 10 minutes to make any last decisions. Unfortunately, none of the waiters ever came back to take my order. When one finally returned, I was told that It was too late and the kitchen was finished for the night. If not for this instance, I would have left 4 stars. I do plan on coming back, but will stick to the rolls.

Finally getting around to writing this review 1 month late!! This place is phenomenal. The sushi is great quality, the service was fantastic, and the restaurant really has a fun vibe. Our server, Jenny, was the sweetest person ever. My group of 6 came in for a birthday and bachelorette celebration and we got a bottle of sake, and Jenny made sure our glasses were never empty. The menu has a decent variety, the sake list has some great options, and the food is delicious. You can come in dressed up or come in casual and you'd fit in great. 4/23/25 Dined here during happy hour and had Ocean Salt Edamame ($5.00) Hamachi (1 pc) ($7) Unagi (1 pc) ($7) Big Boss Roll ($16.00) and Sake Bomb ($19.00). The Hamachi and Unagi were both good but I thought the two cut rolls were pretty average and overpriced for what you got. It was ok but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to return. read more

Nara is one of my favorite sushi spots in the city! We made a same-day reservation on Yelp around noon for later that Friday night and we were seated as soon as we arrived. The restaurant was full and we saw people waiting outside so I was thankful we thought ahead. We tried four rolls - Sake Bomb, Loco Crunchy, Cable Car, and Floral Paradise. My absolute favorite was the Sake Bomb - so delicious and flavorful!! The Cable Car and Loco Crunchy were also very flavorful and I enjoyed the softshell crab especially. The Floral Train wasn't my favorite but I was glad we ordered it since it was a little plainer and complemented the other rolls well! Our server was super nice and was helpful with our questions about the drink menu. The sake types he recommended to us fit our preferences perfectly and really made the night! read more
Outside of the soft shell crab, this would have been five stars. The roll itself was delicious though so still try it. From an ambiance and service standpoint, shoutout to our waiter who poured all of our sake and beers for the properly executed Sake Bombs. Everything was perfect. The food here is amazing, great sushi and unique rolls and hand roll experience. I'd come back if I was in the area. We came when happy hour was about to end and they still let us order from the happy hour menu. The restaurant is small and cozy but I think there was plenty of room for the traffic and I don't think there would be long wait times for a table. I'd come back here for the sake bomb roll. Solid sushi spot in SF for some good sushi that won't break the bank. There's not a ton of seating inside, so if you're coming with a larger group, I'd recommend reserving ahead so you can make sure you get a spot. We ordered a variety of rolls to share, as well as a couple warm appetizers. Rolls tasted fresh, agedashi tofu was light and crispy on the outside, and yellowtail was tender. The sushi here is really good. Just examine the photos below. "I like sushi, I like sushi, sushi sushi sushi, I like sushi, I like sushi" We made the mistake of coming here on a Friday night without reservations. The happy hour on Fridays is extremely popular. Every seat was taken by the happy hourers and let me tell you they STAY, I mean like refuse to move stay. They stay well after the happy hour. They stay after all the food and drink is gone. They stay to talk about their bosses and co- workers. They stay like that person at the bar with that one drink for two hours. We waited 45 minutes for a table, finished our dinner at 8pm, AND they were still all there. The wait staff was super friendly and even extended the happy hour menu to us, but they need learn how to slap a bill on the table after 20 minutes of not ordering anything else. These cheap bastards are not going to tip well. My conclusion: This is one of the better sushi restaurants. The food made up for everything. Regardless of the wait we had a fun time, come and see for yourself. And if you can't beat them join them, come early to snag a table for happy hour. -- Because nobody likes you and you weren't invited to the bar with everyone else. Bring the other fckr in the same boat with you so you could have someone to complaint to. read more

Decided to try this place after seeing the ratings on yelp. Unfortunately, I wish I could give them a better rating but the sushi rolls here were not good. Bf & I ordered the hamachi truffle, Jessica Alba, and Sake Bomb roll. The hamachi appetizer came out first and that was actually good so we were excited for the sushi rolls. They didn't even bring out the rolls together. The first roll that came out was Sake Bomb. We didn't like it and were hoping the second roll would be better. They brought it out after we finished with the first one; service was kinda slow. We were disappointed when it wasn't good as well. We expected the rolls to be just as good as the hamachi truffle but it just didn't hit the spot. It was underwhelming and basic. Not sure why this place has so many high reviews. We left disappointed. With so many other restaurants in the city, we could've easily spent the $100 elsewhere for a more satisfying meal and service. read more

This is one of the best sushi places in San Francisco - from the kind service to delicious dishes, it was a wonderful pick for a large group on a cold day. We were able to walk in and get a table without a problem. We started with miso soup, and five out of six people in our group ordered the Sake Bomb roll upon our waitress' recommendation. The food was served quickly, and when we asked for extra ginger, it was served generously on a separate tray. The Sake Bomb was amazing - an awesome mix of soft rice, crunchy onions, and fresh salmon. Every single plate ended up clean. The chalkboard with daily specials and the fish displayed in glass at the preparation counter really gave this place an authentic, homemade feel. I'll definitely be back to try more! read more

I think I just found my new fave spot! We got the 14 piece omakase along with some others that we wanted to try and it was all so delicious. The fish was so fresh and the presentation was so nice. We arrived 6:30pm on Saturday and it was around the time it started getting packed. The service was great the entire time and they were always checking in on us. My husband and I visited Nara after work on a Wednesday evening, and it was a 5/5 experience! We both ordered the 10pc Nigiri Omakase each. Absolutely amazing. The fish was so fresh, and each piece was a perfect one-biter. They recommended eating from left to right, ending with a beautiful fatty toro! One of my favorite casual yet polished sushi spots in the city! Great prices on handrolls and nigiri, delicious sake selection and super friendly neighborhood style service. Fish is always super fresh, I always get some sake nigiri. Their spicy tuna is also excellent, usually get spicy tuna or spicy salmon handrolls. I didn't take a picture but the negihama roll is also a favorite of mine. They have some of the most delicious spicy mayo here, definitely order it on the side! And the spicy chicken karage is SOOO good! That sauce and the crunch to meat ratio is perfect. Also get the mochi! Really soft and flavorful Love this place, I go every few weeks. The rolls here range from $16-21. The fish quality is amazing but I think they lacked a bit of flavor. For 2 people, we ordered 3 rolls and it was really filling. I don't think we would've gotten full off of only 2 rolls. I ended up asking for a side of unagi sauce because I wanted to dip my rolls in it. I was craving some more flavor in the rolls. Because of the high price range and lack of flavor in the rolls, I don't think I would be coming back anytime soon. read more

UPDATED: I definitely wanted to go back to Nara Sushi for their amazing gimbap, but the idea hit me on Monday morning while I was busy at the office. Overwhelmed by the usual Monday hassles, I decided to order a pickup instead of visiting the restaurant in person. And guess what? It was fantastic! The colorful, juicy gimbap brightened up my Monday at work. My coworkers couldn't resist and rushed over to my lunch box, eager to take a bite, almost begging. I felt so proud of my local restaurant and my Asian identity. Nara Sushi is even developing more options--how can they be so good? I absolutely love Nara! read more
I'm so happy to have Nara in our neighborhood. I'm often so disappointed with sushi options in SF due to lack of quality at ridiculous prices... but Nara is a well-rounded, solid option. Some of my favorites: the hamachi truffle has such good flavor, the truffle isn't overpowering. The same sashimi is SO buttery and fresh. Big boss roll is a great balance of several different types of fish. The chefs special of four different nigiri (including red snapper, sea bass, yellowtail, and one other), while not my favorite, we're still absolutely delicious. Everything is so simply but elegantly plated. Staff is attentive. It's a cute rustic + modern vibe inside. I could imagine this place gets busy during peak hours, but it wasn't an issue for us. read more

Grabbed dinner here on a whim and it turned out to be pretty good sushi. Ambiance is very nice with wooden tables and a sushi bar so you can see the chefs making the sushi from your table (not a sit in bar). It's a little loud with everyone talking and the tables being close together. Service was great, our server was really nice and helpful. Hamachi Truffle: Really great balance of the ponzu and truffle. Hamachi was fresh as well and the jalapeño slice provided a slight crunch and texture with a lil spice to each bite. Overall really refreshing and well balanced flavors. 5/5 Butter 4 Truffle: Super decadent dish. The avocado and butterfish added really decadent fatty flavor and the truffle on top of that was really intoxicating for the first few bites. After awhile though, it kinda got redundant and tiring to of each so much fatty fish. 3.5/5 Floral Train and Victoria Secret Rolls: Both rolls were good but I would say pretty average and something you can find at other places. 3/5 I'd definitely recommend the Hamachi Truffle. The other stuff was ok but the fish quality is pretty good. I'd be interested to return and try their omakase to have a better picture on their sashimi/nigiri. read more

The sushi here is great but not a stand out in comparison to other restaurants in the city. Hamachi Truffle was the best tasting dish here, very fresh and clean tasting fish served on a on bite spoonful to take in the flavors. The Nigiri 7 piece set was good, but wish there was less rice underneath so the fish can stand out. The uni was very soft and melts in your mouth, was hoping to try the Santa Barbara Uni but they were out of order on that night. Also ordered the agedashi tofu and the spicy chicken Karrage, which were just okay too. Service is standard. A casual neighborhood sushi spot by Polk St. in downtown, but nothing too special in my opinion. read more

Is the soy sauce and sushi gluten free?
I cannot have gluten and they provided me tamari (gluten-free soy sauce). They also ensured my sushi was prepared safely.
Is it possible to accommodate gluten free requests, like editing a roll to make it gluten free or asking for a tamari substitute in certain sauces?
Yes I did both and they were very kind about it.
