This was on my list, and I was excited to meet a friend for dinner a couple of weeks ago. They have valet, so if you're in a rush, that helps. The inside is a pleasant surprise; it is designed very well, modern, and simple. Moderate volume for a Friday night. The staff was very attentive, bringing out things quickly. Drinks started with Rose to the Bottom. My friend didn't like it but they replaced it, no questions. It does pack a punch The complementary biscuits were a hit. The gumbo was okay; roux was too light for my liking. I got the special Cobia fisg with the wild mushroom vol au vent, which was divine. Could have used a touch of salt, but I do have an affinity for salty thi things. The carrot cake was probably my least favorite, mainly because I found the texture of the cake off putting. Chef Aaron Bludorn does it again, this time featuring Texas Gulf seafood! So having been to both Navy Blue and Bludorn, I have to say I preferred the food and ambiance of Navy Blue over its sister. The interior of this restaurant is beautiful, right in the heart of Rice Village. The menu features a lot of seafood dishes, but has options for those that don't prefer ocean fares! Our service was spot which allowed us to enjoy a lovely meal and have an amazing evening out. The food service starts with some biscuits served with seaweed butter. What a way to speak southern gulf concept than homemade buttery biscuits! We opted to share an array of dishes, so had a pretty good feel for the menu after the evening was over. - Black Truffle Spaghetti - very light in truffle flavor but they do shave the black truffle table side. Pasta was cooked al dente. If you like to carbo load like me, order the large size! Especially if you plan on sharing! If you're looking for a strong truffle flavor, this dish probably isn't for you. - Clam Chowder - so this comes in a crusty, flakey, bread bowl.. but really just the top of the bowl is cover and it's really hard to break the crust apart without getting it all over the place. The puff pastry is so light and fluffy, it loses its substance once drenched in the chowder. Might not be the best "top" to go with the chowder, but makes for better presentation. The chowder was loaded with clams and bacon on the bottom, so stir prior to serving. Like the Lobster Chicken Pot Pie at Bludorn, I didn't like the flavors of the chowder. It tasted a bit sour, like they used a bunch of sour cream in the base. But this dish had mixed reviews within our party. - Spanish Octopus - Tender and cooked well. Seasoned with black garlic. Didn't stand out but was cooked so well the octopus stood well on its own and spoke for itself. - Smoked Mahi Mahi Dip - tastes exactly like you would expect a fish dip to taste. Comes with potato chips! Some felt like it tasted more like a tuna salad. I thought it was decent. - Crab Cakes were small, and came with just one. Over priced for what you get and didn't have the wow factor for what they charged for it. - Caviar Service - was ok! The accoutrements could've been better. Felt like the little pancakes overwhelmed the caviar itself and didn't add any depth to the service. - Hangar Steak - tender for a hangar steak but the sauce is what stood out most in this dish. My party loved it. I personally don't like steaks that require a huge amount of sauce, not am I a sauce person, so this dish probably just wasn't for me. But my dinner mates enjoyed it a lot. - The desserts were amazing! Both the key lime pie and the carrot cake were fantastic! Key lime pie was the most tart I've ever tasted but was so good! However, I walked away a little disappointed after all the good things I've heard about this place. First of all, I would say the best part of this place is the service. The staff are all super attentive, and are always on top of filling, waters and switching my utensils and pulling away unnecessary plates based on each individual ordered. Also, I was super pleasantly surprised by the bread and herb butter that they brought out before our food to get us started while we waited. I started the meal with a small gumbo and it was actually very good with just the right amount of spiciness though slightly salty, which I thought was just a part of certain gumbo recipes. However, little did I know that this will be a foreshadow to the rest of my meal. The entrée I got was the squid ink linguine, and while the first bite or two was very delicious and flavorful, by bite three I started to realize that I am truly tasting the ocean with how much salt they added to this dish. Halfway through the smaller portion of this dish, I am pretty much drinking as much water as pasta that I am consuming. Again, the service is great on keeping up with the water, but it was disappointing that I need to drown this plate down to dilute the amount of salt in it. The sentiment was shared by multiple different people who ordered the same plate. Also, my friend ordered the burger here and also had the same complaint of Them being way too generous with the salt and was not even able to finish half of the burger before giving up. I took a couple bites from it and it was so salty that it made my pasta feel bland next to it. Lastly, I tried the fries that came with the burgers. And this is the one thing that actually can't get away with being a little salty, right? Well, it sure is salty, but it also lacked the crunch in fries and tasted more like half soggy potato wedges and not really enjoyable. Overall, I had a disappointing experience here, but also understand that some people have a higher tolerance to saltiness of food compared to others. But I think everyone coming here for the first time should ask yourself if this is a deal breaker before dropping a good amount of money for the food (and maybe later blood pressure medication) at this restaurant. read more

This restaurant is gorgeous inside and very clean. Service is great! The food is wonderful as well. All the dishes here are done beautifully. Desserts, however, you should probably skip. The carrot cake frosting had an overly salty flavor, and we were not sure if that was intentional. We got the biscuits, smoked mahi mahi dip, blackened snapper, Dover sole, tuna crudo, raw oysters, crab cake, and linguine vongole. Everything, and I mean everything, was absolutely delicious. Nothing was too salty or overpowering. Everything had its own unique flair and was great. Not the best crab cake we ever had, but it was good. Get the mushroom vol au vent as a side. Your own personal side. This alone, was my favorite thing that I ate. Mocktails are also pretty good. Been here 2X this year, both times it was superb! It's mostly fresh seafood & I ordered off HRW menu this time. The shrimp was amazing, crunchy topping paired with a delicious Asian sauce. Main dish was a pork Wiener schnitzel done perfectly. But it was the in-house dessert that blew me & my friend away! It was the best Key Lime pie ever, very tangy & not too sweet with a nutty crust! Came here for a dinner with some work friends. There is complimentary valet parking. The ambiance and interior were well decorated and nice. The service was terrible. It took almost an hour for our waiter to attend to us which was surprising. After about an hour of trying to find our waiter, we finally ordered cocktails. The drinks came timely. I ordered a lemon drop martini which was basic. We ended up ordering starters and main at the same time because we were all starving. I ordered the fried oysters for appetizers and one word, DELICIOUS. For the main course, I ordered the blackened red snapper and it was actually quite a terrible dish. I went to Navy Blue for Houston Restaurant Weeks and overall it was a great experience! I got the Cesar salad and the pork schnitzel. The salad was delicious, big buttery croutons that were crunchy yet also light and pillowy. I was a little weary of ordering schnitzel for lunch as it can be heavy but theirs was light and not greasy. The potato salad that comes with it is warm. They also served these cheddar biscuits before the meal that were to die for. The menu had good value as it was $25 for a meal that probably would have cost around $50 otherwise. The only downside was they took time to seat us even though we had a reservation and it took 20 minutes before a server came to our table. everyone at navy blue was soooo kind and attentive, from the hostesses to the servers to the managers. also there is complimentary valet!!! we mistakenly made a 7:45 reservation for the wrong day, but they were able to get us a table in less than 15 mins despite it being a saturday night. while i do think most of the items are overpriced, everything was wonderful and the ambiance was so nice. the complimentary biscuits were so yummy but not too salty. the crab cake was absolutely delicious. the branzino and swordfish were fantastic as well. the crawfish risotto was a bit spicy but very good. they don't have their prices online :( but if i recall correctly, two appetizers, three entrees, and two drinks came to about $200 before tip. read more

Beautiful restaurant with the best service! I really appreciate that the waitstaff knows the menu. We started off with possibly the best biscuits I have ever had. I was impressed because our servers did research to better understand what nightshades were and worked with the kitchen to make sure they knew exactly what contained them as well as cinnamon so that I knew what menu options I could eat. I ordered the Turbot special for the night and had the wild mushroom side dish. The truffle presentation was a nice showing. They were both rich and flavorful. My husband ordered the Dover sole which was deconstructed at the table with precision. All of our food tasted great and the desserts were wonderful. We ordered separate desserts -the chocolate (lava) cake and the key lime pie. For our starter we had the mahi mahi dip. For beverages I had a non alcoholic drink and he had one with alcohol-and we both enjoyed our selections. This place was pretty packed on a Thursday night. We observed how meticulous the staff were about refilling water and wine glasses-even opening the door for guest's entering the bathroom. Also you have to try the biscuits that are served-divine! Another cool thing is if you have takeaway, they give you a keychain with a number and you retrieve your bag from the reception stand on your wait out. TLDR Everything was cooked very well, but slightly too salty. We got the seafood gumbo, fried oyster, baked oyster, baked clam, and marinated clam to start. We liked the seafood gumbo the most and the fried oyster. Seafood gumbo was the least salty part of the meal. It's a very light gumbo and the crab was very tender. They give you cheesy biscuits with seaweed butter. The texture on these biscuits were heavenly, but again slightly too salty for my taste personally. For our mains we got the Branzino and the fish and chips. Again, well cooked but too salty. Wow! Stellar from start to finish. The beautiful dining area, the impeccable open kitchen, the food and service, all first class. This was some of the best food and friendlies service I've had in a while. First, we were seated immediately by the hostess, then immediately offered water or any other beverages. A few minutes later our waiter came and gave us the menus. Everything looked so good, I really didn't have any questions and we made no mistakes ordering what we did. We started off with the burrata tartine-creamy through and through, delicious round of toast, then on the plate a puree of sweet potato thinly spread. On top, it looked like more micro sweet potato noodles and micro greens. Just a delicious bomb of flavor throughout. Next we had the French Toast with Mandarin Curd and Blueberry Compote, and an order of the Crawfish Risotto with Andouille sausage. We were blown away by both. The French Toast was at least a 1" thick slice of brioche, browned perfectly all around to a deep, almost brown caramelization. Blueberry compote on top and mandarin curd underneath, though with each bite it seemed more curd just oozed out of the toast. Fantastic flavors in every bite, with a quenelle of whipped cream on top. The risotto, creamy and smooth and rich-I bet there were many tablespoons of butter and or cream in there. Because it wasn't a huge portion but two of us were soon full without being able to even finish the French Toast. Just spicy enough to warm you up, with small bits of sausage dotted throughout, and crayfish too. So many flavors, you just didn't want to stop eating this food. Really first class cooking. Service was not rushed at all but very attentive, and while two different servers did offer us a dessert menu-which unfortunately we had to pass on-I would prefer a little too much service over it lacking. All in all, one of the best dining experiences I've had outside of NYC or other dining destinations. Now I just wish I had more of these types of places where I live-because food like this is totally enviable. Unequivocally recommended. Go ASAP. read more

Dishes were beautiful and had were packed with flavors other than the usual salt and pepper at most seafood restaurants (although they are still a little heavy on the salt for my tastes). A bit on the pricey side but great for a special occasion :) if you don't like cilantro, say it, because it's used heavily as a garnish! Ora King Salmon: beautiful presentation, and the fish was not dry at all, yum! They changed the cut from the salmon steak to a 7 oz filet :( Despite the pink pesto-bismol colored labneh that looked a little strange and the hearty-looking gremolata, nothing overshadowed the flavor of the salmon itself. Enjoyed this one :D Masa gnocchi: vegetarians rejoice, this one was pretty and the sauce was a tasty squash puree. We enjoyed this one too. If you are a fan of tamales and corn tortillas, this one's for you, as it is heavy on that corn-y/masa taste! Brussels sprouts side: giant-size Brussels that needed cutting for each bite! Savory and tasty but it was very saucy and a little too salty for us. Squash side: super tasty, loved this one! Super flavorful and soft without being mushy. Yay, veggies~ Oysters: I only ordered this one on a whim, but they were surprisingly delicious raw! Ours were from Alabama, and they were chubby and not extra salty or gritty at all. Would order again~ A-mock-Xi-cillin: pretty sure we only ordered this mocktail for its cute name, but it tasted like a light ginger beer. Friend enjoyed it, but I wouldn't order it again Dove's nest: a drink with lots of flavors going on! Spicy, sweet, and sour-- a little like tajin but not too much. We've been here many times now. They have full bar. Not super posh. The food is inconsistent. The chairs are fairly uncomfortable. The last two times we have had a drink-waiter that is slow, difficult to understand, and lacks the expertise the prices demand. Be sure to ask for regular butter unless you like seaweed in the butter. The adage of "if it ain't broke, don't' fix it" comes to mind with salted butter. The biscuits are wonderful with regular butter. The Parmesan Risotto with black truffle was very nice. One may wonder why we keep coming back. My family is in love with blackened red snapper. If there were nothing else on the menu they would still come back. The gumbo is better this time than our last visit. One may request they leave certain items out (I.e., clams, etc.). Unfortunately the bread service only limits you to one biscuit per person. You would think they can crank out a few more gratis given the prices. Perhaps I'm not exactly the right guest if I balk at paying for extra biscuits. - Banana sundae was good, the nut clusters were on par with See's Candies. - Good service, close to Michelin-level apart from the servers sometimes placing plates silverware backhanded. Yes, this place is fancy. Everyone is well-dressed, women with nice dresses and nicer handbags. Several guys in suits. Folks generally in the 40-50 age range. Fairly busy on a Saturday night, reservations recommended! Also, the price tag on the menu definitely fit the Rice Village clientele; expect $20-30 for appetizers and $40-50 for entrees. The reason for the 3 stars? I personally found Navy Blue to be a slightly more upscale McCormick & Schmick's. Perhaps I had higher expectations for a restaurant whose chef is from NYC's Le Bernardin (which I've been 3 times), or I couldn't quite figure out what made the offering 'modern seafood'. Note, they do offer a lunch prix-fixe menu that seems decent, $35 for 3 courses. That might actually push me to going back in the near future! Go to Navy Blue if you want the 'see and be seen' kind of atmosphere. A delightful setting with excellent food and outstanding service. Loved the appetizers, tuna tartare and clam fritters. Excellent with the Sancerre wine! They were properly staffed but we weren't helped until 20 mins after being seated, when my partner had to get up to get the host to send a server over to get water and appetizers. After ordering, we did not receive our first order till 40 mins after. we didn't get the remaining order till 20 mins later. After receiving our food we were not checked on till an additional 30 mins after when i needed a refill on my water. The staff did make us feel rushed and we just did not feel like we were being attended to. There were other tables near us that did get attended to well. It's hard to believe that that possibly the fact that we didn't align with their typical customers could've played a role, as a POC young gay couple, and the typical customer being 40+ year old, this could be a reason. read more

The food is really good, well put together dishes that aren't uneven or unbalanced. Plates are on the small/shareable size, the faire is light and no one menu item leaves you feeling heavy. As a pescatarian, I was excited to try Navy Blue. It wasn't very difficult to get a reservation on a Friday night. They have valet parking but also paid self parking around the Rice Village area, which is what we did. We got seated pretty quickly, ambiance is nice but it was tough to forget that this was the repurposed Politan Row food hall. Service was great! They brought us some hot towels as soon as we sat down and were very attentive. They brought out some fresh bread (more like a biscuit) and butter, which was SO good. We tried the tuna crudo and octopus for appetizer. Tuna crudo was fantastic - 5/5 - the pieces of tuna were big and fresh, loved the puffed rice to it. The octopus was definitely unique - it tasted more like breaded chicken than octopus to me. I love octopus and get it wherever it's on the menu, but I prefer the more traditional grilled taste - this wasn't my favorite (3/5 for me). My wife loved it though (5/5 for her)! We got the crawfish risotto appetizer size and the red snapper for our mains. Both were good - but neither really impressed us. Risotto was pretty standard. 3.5/5. Most unique part of the redfish was the aji amarillo that came with it - it had a little spicy kick to it that made it tasty. 4/5. We usually have a sweet tooth, but unfortunately nothing on their dessert menu looked great to us, so we skipped dessert. I would honestly come back to eat the bread they give you in the beginning, it was amazing! The ambience is great for date night and they have free valet. Food was good but I enjoyed the appetizers more. The Ceaser salad was definitely different and it was great with the anchovies and the croutons. The pork Schnitzel was okay, I don't think I would get it again. The crawfish risotto was something I didn't like in the beginning but when I got home I was excited to eat my leftovers, so I would definitely order again. Located on the north side of the main strip of Rice Village, Navy Blue serves as the sister restaurant to Bludorn (off of Allen parkway). It's located off of the main drag and slightly out of the way of the busier south/southwest portion of Rice Village. Parking is available via the paid surface lots or you can park for free for up to 2 hours in the central parking garage. We came in for lunch service and the interior was honestly a bit bare and going with a white palette. The kitchen was within open view of the tables, which is a decent feature. We went to try most of the appetizers to get a good grasp of their menu. Oysters (both baked and fried) - $4 each. A bit pricey in my opinion but they're pretty solid in terms of taste and presentation. 4/5 Stone crab claws- $20 per claw. Again a bit stiff on the pricing but I guess it's premium. Tastes good but not worth the value in my opinion. 3.5/5 Burrata Tartine- $25. Not too big a fan of this dish ordered for the table. Not too much creativity required on this one. 2.5/5 Smoked Mahi Mahi Dip with Trout Roe - $28. Probably my least favorite dish that was ordered for the table. The fish inside the dip was very blended; Mahi is quite a firm white meat so I'm surprised there wasn't any solid chunks of Mahi in the dip; the texture was more of a canned albacore with mayo and other binders. The potato chips used to dip the Mahi were also a bit flimsy and bland. Not a fan. 1/5 Baked Clams- $21. Comes with 5 baked clams. The clams were blitzed into a chowder-texture and topped with bread crumbs/Parmesan and baked. Solid but I wish they kept the clam meat whole. 4/5 Lobster Roll- $38. No sides included; honestly pretty high at $38 for a lobster roll but who knows what inflation has done to the deep water crustacean. The buttered toast is good, although I would've preferred a different type of roll that's more traditional to Maine. The lobster mix was mostly claw meat, which is good, and didn't have an excess of mayo and filler. 4/5 Ambiance 3.5/5. For comparison to Bludorn, I felt their interior was slightly lacking creativity; maybe they should've gone for a more brutalist design/look or go for the ultramodern look that's been popular nowadays. Overall, some solid hitters on the menu but you'll definitely pay out of your pocket for most of the menu in a fine dining environment. Value wise; I actually felt Bludorn offered a bit better in terms of dining experience but this is a good add for a special lunch or dinner date for the Rice Village area. read more

I've been waiting to go here for a while- everything I expected it to be and more. Excellent service, unique dishes, lovely atmosphere. Can't wait to return. The bartenders in particular made the evening fun and even more enjoyable. You cannot miss the crawfish risotto or the oyster brine martini. Truly upscale Texas seafood culture at its finest. Having been here for both lunch and dinner service, I will have to say that I absolutely loved the energy during both. For lunch you get a more relaxed atmosphere. Here you'll be seeing some girlfriends meeting up for a nice lunch but also a few guys discussing business (literally heard someone talk about their business plan). For dinner, it is subliminal tranquility with a subdued romantic ether. Literally loved every single drink and dish that I got for both visits. The most memorable dish for me of both visits had to be their swordfish au poivre. The balance of flavors and the freshness of the fish really highlights the cooking skill you need to present this dish. Another favorite was the lobster ravioli from their pasta menu. My girlfriends and I decided to make this first stop as part of Houston restaurant week. I love that there's complimentary valet service, so I didn't have to panic or worry about parking in Rice Village. We were immediately seated and had the kindest waiter! He was quite patient with us and gave his honest thoughts about our selections. I also loved that he suggested that we select all of our courses so that he can arrange to have them served accordingly. I don't remember the last time I got to thoroughly enjoy my company and food. The timing of our dishes were absolutely perfect. Appetizer: chilled shrimp- these were refreshing and came with a spicy sauce that balanced well with the freshness of the shrimp. We were also give these irresistible biscuits that were gone in seconds Main Course: branzino with cucumber and skordalia- again, fresh fish which had the most perfect crust. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the skordalia, it reminded me of tzatziki and worked well with the cucumber. Dessert: chocolate coulant- I am still daydreaming about this dessert! The warmth of the chocolate and crunchy texture was fantastic with the scotch flavored ice cream. Unfortunately though, our waiter said we couldn't take the entire ice cream container home! I chose to have moscato d'asti, which I loved. Navy Blue has endless options for drinks which is super comforting. The decor was very upscale and I loved that you could see the kitchen/entire process of your meal being made. As a pescatarian, this restaurant suits alll of my needs. Seafood inspired themed restaurant. The entire inner decor resembles the sea untainted by humankind. You first walk in with large oyster like walls and the hostess stand resembling the Pearl at its center. Open style kitchen where you can watch the cooks and chefs prepare all the meals. Occasionally you'll hear "yes chef!" Like in the movie The Menu. The restaurant used to be Politan Row which closed down a couple years ago. We made dinner reservations for Valentine's Day. We were seated almost immediately when we got there. Brendan was our server and he knew the menu and all the holiday specials very well. He was very attentive to our table. The service is amazing and they always had new plates and silverware for you between each dish. You even got a plate for your oshibori at the beginning of the meal which is whisked away after you use the hand towel, which is infused with essential oils and had a hint of lavender. Then we ordered a total of 3 drinks: hold me closer, London calling, and seaside bramble. The London calling was our favorite. It was a gin drink but so light and refreshing taste. For appetizers You get free biscuits (that remind us of an upscale version of red lobster biscuits) and this dill spread that complements it well. we also got 2 baked oysters, 2 baked clams and 2 marinated clams. Our favorite was the marinated clams which are raw but served ceviche style in pineapple purée and juice so it becomes citrified. The baked clams and oysters were pretty filling in of itself. Then we got the crawfish risotto and linguine vongole but appetizer portions to share. The appe portion was about 5 oz per the server. The risotto was good but not amazing. The linguine was amazing and rich! It also had nori seaweed and uni to mix it all in. Came with 5 clams. Then we shared an entree of the swordfish steak which came with this salty and flavorful peppercorn sauce. Also came with a whole roasted garlic and fried baked potato. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and not too dry and captured the sauce well. Then at the end of the night if you have leftovers, they give you a keychain with a number on it which you give to the hostess on your way out and they give you the leftover bag there. Very well thought out. We can't wait to come back and try more of their menu and cocktails!! read more

Chef Arron Bluedorn does it again, with just a yummy menu at his 2nd restaurant in Houston. I was so excited to try this place, and for me it lived up to my expectations. Drink- my foodie friend tried one of there mocktails, I did not recall the name because our server just gave a verbal list of mocktails. I didn't try any cocktails- as I strictly came to feast. But I plan to come back to enjoy that large bar. Food-I came famished and ready to try everything on the menu. I was torn between the crab cake and BBQ shrimp as the app. I went with the shrimp. There was this sweet piece of what I think was bread or sweet bread, at the bottom of the plate that was so yum to me. The bread basket came after the app was served, interesting? The Focaccia bread was room temperature, but the cheddar biscuit was nice and hot and yum. For entree I had the seafood risotto (half portion) and it was delicious. I would come again and again for that dish. But the menu changes frequently, hoping if it is ever replaced, that it is something to that caliber. I also had half portion of the lobster ravioli. Now while the flavor was excellent, great chunks of lobster, the actual pasta was a little firm for my taste, but I enjoyed despite that. My foodie friend had the special as an entrée, the Lobster Thermidor, which was pricey but enjoyed it, I bad a bite and it was nice. I was tempted to go with there other special, the truffle Risotto, but still happy with my choices! Service - top notch. As described by other yelpers, the service is extremely proactive approach and is continous throughout your dinning experience. You are never left alone for long, for me I enjoyed this. But I see for other yelpers this was TOO MUCH check-in. I prefer several server visits than none at all, so I was fine with it. Our server Bobby said he actually served at the bar, but he was our server the whole evening for dinner. He was amazing, everything you want in a server, fun, ready to get into the weeds with you on the menu, patient, and friendly. I plan to seek out and find him again. We celebrated our anniversary here recently and it was the most perfect place for the occasion. The restaurant is located in the heart of Rice Village. The restaurant is trendy,beautiful, and clean. The ambiance is cozy. Service was attentive, and the food was superb. It's on a pricey price but the food was exceptional and definitely a special event kind of dining for us. Parking was a challenge so we valet parked. We enjoyed all the dishes, but the Branzino dish is a must try. The complimentary biscuits with seaweed butter were very good as well. The menu featured an extensive selection of seafood. We only tried a few, but they were all so fresh and delicious. From service to dinner, everything was just amazing! Very nice marketing around this restaurant. We were excited to try it, but the food was disappointing. The service was great--very attentive and friendly--and the atmosphere was nice, but for the price I expected much better. We ordered the preset dinner menu, and the pasta was clumped together in one big chunk. The salmon had no taste, and it was topped with big chunks of parsley as decoration, like it's the 2000s. The dessert tasted like it was from an HEB bakery. In a city with countless great seafood restaurants, this one didn't stand out. read more
