The New Monmouth Diner (NMD) consistently outperforms when it comes to food quality, freshness, taste and presentation! On top of that, the diner is always busy and the well organized and efficient management team as well as the kitchen and waitstaff teams keep the "customer experience" moving at a calm and reasonable pace! We have never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. Their menus are unlike the usual New Jersey diner menus which are very similar with voluminous pages of every imaginable food category and style. This type of menu requires most items to be delivered to the restaurant packaged frozen (NOT FRESH) and prepared for serving! The ambiance is often crowded, but not too noisy. The diner is well managed. Waitstaff experience widely varies from competent to inexperienced. What's disturbing is when waitstaff projects an attitude, argumentative and naive. I ordered French onion soup, sandwich with side of tzatziki sauce with the one request to have everything at the same time. Everything was brought out separately, and I was offered more "sauce" and brought au jus with beef drippings and told it was the same thing. First New Jersey diner we have been to in a very long time! This made me miss New Jersey more than ever. We had a fantastic meal. I had my favorite New Jersey diner food, which was a western omelette with rye toast. It was perfect. My wife had a chicken Panini, which was excellent. But, the most perfect part of the meal was I could actually order a piece of cheesecake from a diner. I know to a lot of New Jersey natives that is an every day thing, but it was a super special treat for my wife and I. The service was great. The ambience was great. Parking was fantastic. This is an amazing diner. I have come here a few times now, and it never fails. The food is always delicious. My favorite item is the Boom Boom Burger. It's just so juicy and flavorful. The bacon, mushrooms, onions, and that boom boom sauce, all just blend together so well. I love it. Its the perfect burger here. I have also tried their omelets and paninis. Everything is just outstanding here. Plus the service and staff are amazing. Definitely try a burger out when you come here. Highly recommended. read more

We've lived in Middletown more than 40 years & can't even remember how many times We've eaten here. Recently stopped by on a Saturday early evening gor a bite to eat. We were seated immediately but the server took a while to greet us. Asked for beverages which we got 5 minutes later. At that time we placed our order...corned beef on rye for both. 20 minutes later got out food. What we got was some tasteless beef Jerky & flimsy rye bread. It was just awful! Server never asked how the food was nor if we wanted drink refill. When paying our bill & asked about our experience what we related to them didn't phase them seemingly like they didn't care. Family style diner - very homey and friendly service, and the food is delicious overall. We had ice coffee, orange juice and grapefruit juice to start. The ice coffee was very watery and light, the juice was okay from the containers. The Philly cheesesteaks was good, well cooked beef with melted cheese on the warmed bun, accompanied pickle and coleslaw. There's liquid and crumbs on some sections of the floor. I have eaten here twice recently after relocating to the area. I had a burger the first time and an omelette the next. The food was decent, maybe a hair above average diner fare. Nothing special about it, but it tasted good. I will likely eat here again at some point. My only gripe is that it could be a little cleaner. Both times my menu had an uncomfortable stickiness factor to it. I doubt that they have ever been cleaned. The table was also sticky the first time as well. Very easy to get to, large parking area and most of all the food was excellent. I saw reviews on the Yum Yum burger and that platter was loaded! A huge burger on a brioche bun with toppings, onion rings, Cole slaw, pickle and I picked waffle fries. This diner has been a family favorite since I moved to the area in 2011. Their menu is solid, offering a wide selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. I have had salads, sandwiches, omelettes, soups and pancakes over the years and I enjoyed them all. I do believe they offered fair prices for the portions and quality of food they are serving. Portions are properly large, and the coffee here was definitely brewed with care. The interior design leans into the classic 50's cars, with big posters of James Dean on the wall. The recurring theme about this place in the reviews section is the lack of Covid precautions in place. I had mixed feelings about dining at this place after seeing the reviews. Although the staff did wear masks during our time of visit, the diner was surprisingly working at almost full capacity. Let's talk about the food because that's what makes a diner special and the folks working here have nailed it. Everything that we ordered was delicious and the quantity was huge. We ordered - pancakes, a couple of different omelette, stuffed mushrooms and grilled cheese with fries. We enjoyed everything that we ordered. The diner is huge with ample parking space outside. They do operate at full capacity so you'd be seated close to others. So, this is the thing, the food is spot on and there's no complaints, but the place could do a little more towards taking precautions. read more

We live about a mile away so this is our go to diner when we just don't know what we want. Some pros - breakfast sandwiches, the chicken avocado panini is excellent, and some of the waitresses are great. Some cons - the older lady who runs the register is a little curt and borderline rude/dismissive. The home fries are always undercooked, wraps are just ok, a little small and the prices just keep going up, to the point where I'd probably go to an actual restaurant for a comparable price point. Plus the obligatory credit card surcharge, tacky. The person who picks up will always make you wait minutes until a server takes the order, not sure why they can't just take the order. We just ordered 2 wraps and a pint of soup and it was $36 (and they messed up the order it was supposed to be a quart of soup not a pint so it would have been $38-40). A pint of matzo ball soup, enough for one small serving was $5.95. It's just too much. Might seem like food for 2 for $40 is a deal, but realistically we could do fast casual for $20-25 so it's not much of a "cheap" option like the diner used to be. Prices seem to have gone up 25% over the last year or so. It's a solid place that fits the bill when in need, but there are definitely better diners- just not in Middletown. read more

Came in today with my buddy for a late lunch. Our server was very nice and friendly. My buddy got a Pizza Buger deluxe and I got Chilli over rice. We additionally each got soups. This place went downhill. I have no idea what is going on at this diner but, it sure is not the way it used to be. From the food to their service, not good at all. Fast service is given to you if you know them. I came here to pick up my food and it took literally almost an hour. After asking numerous times how much longer, finally the food came and not even an apology whatsoever. However, if someone they know comes in, they get priority. This is NOT how you do service. My daughter and I were in the area for a Doctor appointment, we were hungry and had some time to kill. I went on Yelp and searched diners, we stumbled upon the New Monmouth Diner. It was a Thursday at about 2pm and although there were customers, most seats were vacant. We were brought menus as soon as we sat and the waitress who was very attentive took our drink orders. We browsed the menu and the lox platter caught my eye. My daughter order a chicken cutlet sandwich with avocado. Both plates came out fairly quick. The salmon platter was beautiful with a nice big bagel, lettuce, tomato, capers and olives. The salmon was fresh and tasty. My daughter enjoyed her sandwich and we both brought 1/2 home to finish later. All in all it was a nice lunch with great food and service in a nice environment. read more

Stopped by here to get something to eat before getting back on the road. They had solid diner food, I would definitely recommend the Monterey Panini. Service is great. My new favorite Diner in the area! Sat at the counter and the interactions between the servers and the, what appeared to be, regular customers, were fantastic. Personal connections built over the years is always nice to see and the staff was patient and friendly. Place was PACKED when I got there around 6:30pm on a Friday night. I had my standard diner fare----eggs, bacon, rye toast and coffee. all was great but for next time I had my eyes on the patron next to me and their dinner of pork chops. Holy mackerel, portion was great and the chops looked to be cooked to perfection. Coffee snob here but the coffee was REALLY good for diner coffee. Freshly brewed. Bacon was crispy, and the portion size was excellent for the price. I will be back and will also try a piece of their pie which everyone was ordering as well. read more

I'm sorry to be writing this review after being a loyal customer for more than 20 years, but I feel it's time for a reality check. Dining in is great... food is typical Jersey diner fare and the service is always friendly. Our issues are with the takeaway orders. After 9 consecutive problems with takeaway orders we have to say something. Every single order has had multiple issues... missing items, wrong orders?!...missing condiments and on and on. Tonight's order was so disappointing it hurts. The food has gotten very expensive and takeaway items should be given the attention it needs. Your staff clearly needs to be retrained on the importance of filling orders properly. They are representing your business with every order they fail to fill.. they need to do better and management needs to oversee this. Serious improvement is needed. read more
