Very pleased with a last minute party order! I was on the hunt for fried udon and came across New Town Cafe in Aiea. I remember loving the previous restaurant that occupied this spot (Asian Grindz), so I decided to give New Town Cafe a try. I called the day before to order a small party pan of Fried Udon, and wow - it was really good! They were very generous with the beef, udon, and veggies. Unfortunately, the whole reason I ordered fried udon was to avoid eggs for my nephew, but I completely forgot to mention that when I placed the order... oops! Lol! He just skipped the noodles that day, but the adults were more than happy to enjoy his share for him! When I called to ask about pickup, I was hoping for 10am, but was told the earliest it could be ready was 10:30. I said, "Shux! I'll already be back in Ewa Beach by then, so it's okay." To my surprise, the woman on the phone offered to have it ready earlier, and we settled on 10:15 instead. I really appreciated her willingness to accommodate my schedule. As we were heading to the pickup, the same woman called letting me know my order was ready - it was almost 10am on the dot! Early!! She was also very friendly at the pickup window, which made the experience even better. The pricing was fair too - $60 for a small party pan. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu... and especially for another order of that delicious Fried Udon! I really wanted to give this place a try after seeing so many positive reviews. Before it became Newtown Cafe, I used to love eating here when it was Newtown Asian Grindz, so I was looking forward to coming back. We ordered the cold ginger chicken, loco moco, pork chop with gravy, and sesame balls. I have to say, I really miss the cold boneless ginger chicken the way it used to be made. It was one of my favorite dishes here. Unfortunately, the food just didn't have the flavor I was hoping for. The pork chop in particular tasted a little off to me, and instead of the Chinese-inspired flavors I remembered, the dishes felt more like local comfort food with a bit of Chinese flair. The overall experience also felt a little lacking in warmth and friendliness. I know many restaurants are facing challenging times, and it's never my intention to leave a low review. I genuinely want local businesses to succeed. But one thing I've learned throughout my food journey is that when food is made with love, you can taste it. It's more than just the ingredients--it's the care, pride, and aloha that come with it. And when that feeling is missing, you notice it too. This is simply my honest experience. I haven't been here in years. I know they were new owners for a while. The lady behind the counter was polite and walked us through the menu. Atmosphere was nice, perfect outdoor shade to enjoy the view of people practicing in the golf driving range. We tried several different plates and some to takeout. I really enjoyed the Fried Udon with Chicken. Perfectly seasoned with fresh udon noodles. The Grilled Salmon Salad was also a good contender. Salmon was topped with minced garlic on a bed of fresh lettuce. The Fried Udon witth beef was also seasoned right too. We ordered the salt & pepper pork chop regular plate which came with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. The coating on the pork chop was nice and crispy and had great flavor. My boyfriend and I love this place so much. The portions are big and they cook the food so so good. Everything is crispy and tasting fresh. I love how they give a generous amount. The garlic was all over the fish and they gave good sized pieces. The Mac is not too overpowering with mayo and the kamaaina mixed plate has three kinds of food on it haha it has katsu (crispy perfection), hamburger steak with egg. Had to meet a friend at the driving range, so I decided to try this place. I ordered a mini s&p pork chop and chicken cake noodle. The area was tidy, but the tables were not clean to the touch. It was kind of gross. After ordering, I received a hand written number on a reused piece of paper. My order took over 20 minutes, which seemed a bit long for the type of food being served. I noticed there were a lot of people picking up food, as it was dinner time. It would have been nice to be told the wait is a little long right now, but that wasn't the reason for my poor review. The pork chops (mini) is 4 pc, with one scoop of rice and mac salad. The taste was average, it was served hot. The chicken cake noodle was a disaster. It was so bad, I threw it away. There was no taste, and the noodles were soggy because a gel of flavorless mucus was soaking the noodles. The chicken didn't taste like it was even seasoned with the basic salt and pepper. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, but their taste was ruined by the gross flavorless "gravy." The food looked great, but I was only able to eat the pork chop plate. I don't like to waste food, but I also won't force myself to eat terrible food... and the chicken cake noodle was terrible. read more

Take a swing at this place... Who knew this place existed...not me but thanks to Yelp New Town Cafe is a great place to find local comfort faves right at Newtown Golf Driving Range but with the Sunday's storm that was impossible for anyone to use the area but thankfully the restaurant is a covered area and was literally unfazed by the crazy rain. With that the parking lot was completely empty so it was an easy park and walk up to the building which is facing the driving range that I think is pretty cool so folks that aren't using it can still enjoy viewing with parties that are playing as well. Though I can because I saw that they have "Yaki Udon" a comfort food I grew up with and have yet to find a place that does it right for me so I had to check it out. This cute place is express style where you place your order at a window at the staff gets it all set for you and it takes literally minutes to get it freshly prepared and with the reasonable prices I decided to order their Chicken Cake Noodles...no you won't find it on the menu but apparently I saw it on the chalkboard which is probably a special but for $14.99 I just had to try it. The Yaki udon was pretty good lightly seasoned and not too salty with a scrambled egg and lots of veggies cabbage and onions it comes with chicken beef or shrimp and got the chicken which I'm glad as it was cubed up Teri chicken so that alone had great flavor and at $13.50 it was priced nice as for the chicken cake noodle which had lots of veggies as well with zucchini, broccoli, onions, water chestnuts, carrots and celery all loaded with gravy was yummy but after my drive home the noodles basically absorbed all the sauce so the noodles was mushy which the next time will ask the gravy on the side. Hidden away in the Newtown driving range is a local style Cafe. They have burges, saimin, Aisan plates, seafood and combos plates. There is parking in the parking lot where you have to walk up to the club house. There on the right is the Cafe with alot of outdoor sitting. You would order at a walk up window. We went during a weekday, so service was fast. Food came at a normal wait time for made to order plates. Cold ginger chicken regular plate. Enough to feed two or one hungry person. Fried udon comes with choice of beef or chicken. Orange chicken came just like my lunch companion liked it. Not spicy like Panda's. Pros: Alot of food, so go hungry. The Mac salad had just the amount of mayonnaise. Not over power like Rainbow's. They gave me two small container of ginger sauce for my ginger chicken plate. Mmmmm Cons: Orange chicken was very good but, wish had more orange flavor. The chicken in my cold ginger chicken plate needed more flavor. Maybe when cooking the chicken, they shouls add more salt and ginger in the water. Would I go back? You know me. The menu had a list of my favorite foods. So the answer will be yes. Choose New Town Cafe if you want MASSIVE, weighty plates. Choose New Town Cafe if you want value. No plate is more than $15. Choose New Town Cafe if you love Chinese style plate lunches. Think of the curry with a different spice blend from Indian or Japanese, homemade katsu sauce cooked and thickened with starch, wok hei on fried udon or the chicken and veg topping for the cake noodles, and starch thickened brown gravy. Choose New Town Cafe if you want to experience a different interpretation of flavors. A fried udon that uses the BBQ chicken and it's marinade for a sweet / salty flavor. A chicken cake noodle that has large piece of zucchini and mushrooms in it that make it taste like a side for a steak. An orange chicken smothered in an eye watering vinegar forward sweet / sour sauce. There is nothing wrong with the cooking of the food. Hamburger steak, roast pork, katsu, are all local plate lunch correct. There is nothing wrong with the fast, efficient counter service. Everytime I go here I get deja vu of Palisades Drive Inn, once I tried their garlic chicken I knew they were either related or a family member opened up their own sister shop. They're located at the Newton Golf Range in Waimalu so it makes it more convenient than driving all the way up the hill to Palisades. It's a perfect spot to hit on the way home from work or if you in the Pearl City/Aiea area. My go to is usually the garlic chicken, chicken katsu or roast pork. The garlic chicken is just like Palisades Drive Inn, savory and pan fried on the flattop with a heavy garlic flavor that I really enjoy. Their chicken katsu has a nice crunch and flavor that a bit better than L&L, and their roast pork is braised style, cooked low and slow for a few hours and served with a tasty brown gravy. I usually always or my plate all Mac salad (don't judge me) because I usually have rice at home ready to eat and their Mac is done just right, not to watery and not too mayo-y. The service here is always pretty fast, but I usually just call my order in beforehand like always. There's a large seating area in front of the restaurant giving you a view of the golfers practicing there golf swing at the range, there usually a lot of shaded cover now since the range installed solar panel covers, and if you're in the mood you can hit some golf balls for fun to kill time. read more

Huge portions for reasonable prices! This place is located at the Newtown Driving Range and opened about a year ago. I've never been before but, my parents' friends raved about this place and we decided to try it & it did not disappoint! My Dad picked up the food and brought it home so I can't say much about the service & ambiance. But, I can say, for 8 plates, we paid $94 with tax! That's not bad all for all the food we got. Here's what we got: 1. I got the Chicken Chow Mein and it was a FULLL plate of noodles with flavorful bbq chicken pieces, onions, and cabbage. I loved it and couldn't stop eating it. It was flavorful and loved that it had veggies! This was $12.99. 2. Next, we ordered 3 chicken katsu curry plates and these were 2-3lb! It was HEAVY! It came with 3 layers of chicken katsu, 2 scoops of rice, and Mac salad. The chicken was crispy & covered in curry. There was plenty of curry & sooo much leftovers. These plates were $12.50 each. 3. My grandma got a mini beef stew & it was in the same large takeout container as the regular plates just with one scoop of rice instead of 2. It was again, a lot! My grandma said she enjoyed be large chunks of carrots, potato, and beef. 4. My mom got cake noodles and she was sooo happy it had so much veggies including broccoli, zucchini, cabbage, and even chicken. Again, the plate was full to the top. We always order the Chicken Karaage and chicken Katsu and the mini version is still a full plate . The portions are very generous. I only wish they improve the tonkatsu sauce as twice we ordered and it was very watery . Other than that... the chicken katsu is still very tasty . I also ordered the Garlic shrimp and that was also very good and a lot of shrimps too. There are a lot of tables outside to eat if needed and the grounds are also kept clean. New Town Cafe is the new place where Newtown Asian Grindz used to be...located next to Newtown Golf Driving Range. They opened the beginning of 6/2023. As I looked over their menu, the selections and the overhead menu reminds me of L&L. I loved Asian Grindz homemade hamburger steak so decided to order it here hoping it would taste the same. It comes with 3 perfectly round and flat hamburger patties so don't think it's homemade BUT it was good. I liked their macaroni salad...it had the right amount of salt. Pepper tastes so good on mac salad so had to add that! My husband always has to try the beef stew when we go to new places. He said the meat, potatoes and carrots were cooked perfectly! The salt and pepper pork chops was a disappointment! It came with red & green bell peppers and onions and choke garlic! They should have called it garlic pork chops because that was all you could taste! It was nicely fried and crispy but did not taste like salt & pepper. So if you like garlic this dish is for you.
