Neither Nice nor nice. Went for Sunday brunch and found that the atmosphere and service has gone way downhill over the years... There is a dingy cast to the room, which looks like it could use a good sprucing up and cleaning. Service was nonexistent despite a not-too-busy floor. To call it Nice is not nice; that lovely French seaside town deserves better representation. read more

I'm a big fan of this place. It's not like being in Nice-but it's much easier to get to and more importantly-each visit has proven to be enjoyable, I - for one- am partial to good basic French brasserie food: omelettes, quiche, mussels with pommel frites and this place does them all well, It's not too shabby either on some other dishes- roast chicken with purée of potatoes, a good pasta dish with diced crab , a fine Hamburger. I got there, alone, one Saturday morning in my neighborhood. Probably the 4th table in line. Was promptly told that they can't overburden the kitchen that early so I cannot have a table. Came here with reservations to dine for Restaurant Week. Service was very nice and they will hang your coat up for you with tickets! We wanted to pick something affordable for wine and ended up panicking when the Sommerer came over to recommend us a bottle of red that was like $65! We both ordered different menus and ate from each other's. For the appetizer to start, I got escargot which was already pre-removed from the shell in a potato gnocchi, fava beans, bacon lardons. Just alright. For my main course, I got the braised lamb which was cooked to a tender perfection served on a bed of "gigante bean ragoût, sauce braisage, gremolata." The organic chicken was also good but didn't feel like it was anything out of the ordinary. Finally, we tried their special of double chocolate cake which was very dense and not much to it. However, the Pain D'Epices aka spiced cake, orange anglaise, ginger ice cream was delish! Overall, I felt like the restaurant menu was a bit lackluster. We had the breakfasts and dinners on and off over the course of 5 days. For the most part, the French inspired entrees, bread, wine and desserts were excellent- we sampled widely among the choices. The service was uniformly great and cheerful. For the prices and location, Nice Matin is a gem on the upper west side. read more

I absolutely love this place -the vibe, the food and the atmosphere! We had a reservation for 5 people outside and it was so nice. We had Vincente as our waiter and he was very attentive! We ordered Le Pamplemousse, 2 avocado omelettes, butternut squash gnocchi, kale salad with grilled shrimp and a brie omelette. We also had iced tea, coffee and pellegrino! We were all so happy to be able to dine together since we were having a send off for our friend who is moving to London! Everything was perfect! We were so delighted with everything! Fresh and well prepared French though not in very traditional bistro style. The chickpea fries were delicious and quite special, and the escargot app were generous in portion (not in conventional garlic-laden version so some may find it less). Duck confit was really good and their fish dishes were done pretty well too. Overall was happy with the food quality. It's also a nice space which allowed ample time to hang a bit and people-watch if that's your thing. Service was unintrusive for those who prefer a bit more privacy and time, though some may want to be checked on a bit more regularly, but on balance was good. read more

Ehhh. Really wanted to like this place! Lovely interior and would love a great French restaurant in the neighborhood to be a regular at for brunch. This place just didn't cut it for me. Pastry Basket - 4/5 - Everything tasted great, but not amaaaazing. No real complaints here except they forgot to add a cheese danish in ours. Brie Omelette - 3/5 - The flavors just didn't meld together. Was expecting a super fluffy omelette French cuisine is known for, but this one was just okay. The combo of egg, mild brie, and bacon bits was okay. Toast wasn't my favorite. Truffle - Cheddar Burger - 3.75 - First of all, they brought it out medium rare when it was ordered medium. The server asked medium rare right? when she saw my fiancé inspecting the inside with a puzzled look. In all fairness, she did offer to get a new order in but that would've taken more time and both dishes were already brought out. Other than that, well toasted and good size. Truffle isn't too strong. The meal wasn't outstanding enough for us to want to come back to try again, especially with those prices. I have been twice recently. Some real positives - good hosts, an attractive room, good location. Apéro was pleasant, with a nice selection of hors d'oeuvre along with your drinks or mocktails. But lunch was disappointing. The food was well prepared but portions were really small-- we left hungry. All the elements for a good experience are there but come on! Just an amazing food! Grilled octopus was out of this world. Radicchio salad was so delicious and large that it could be a meal of its own. Our server, Vanessa was very professional and pleasant. Now for some improvements...The hostesses at the door can be trained differently or replaced altogether...these young ladies at the door do not seem to be happy to see you coming into the restaurant. They don't smile, they don't say hello or good bye! But focus on why you are going there...not for the hostess but for the delicious food!! read more

Came here for a nice date night. In general everything felt OK, but honestly the experience inside felt like a really fancy overpriced diner. Here's what we got... Salad Paysonne (3/5)... delicious flavors but tasted like it had been sitting in a large salad bowl in the kitchen and plopped on our plate before serving. Over dressed and lettuce was on the wilted side Socca Crepes (3.5/5)... my bf ordered this and it was tasty! Just nothing exceptional Lamb shank (4/5)... deliciousssss. Flaked off the bone. The sauce was just very rich. If based on the food alone it's a 3.5... the experience inside though makes it a 3. The inside needs an upgrade. Not a young crowd either. AMBIANCE This is a casual eatery in the Upper West Side. It is a bit loud for romantic brunch. But it's great for friends catching up. There was a range  of customers here: grandparents with their grandchildren and girlfriends having brunch, and couples dining casually. Customers really keep to themselves so don't expect to make a new friend if you're dining alone.  FOOD I ordered the mint lemonade and summer melon salad. They were incredibly refreshing for the hot day. And the goat cheese made it filling.  SERVICE I was at the bar. The bartender was busy with the brunch crowd, so he couldn't really talk to those are the bar. But he was efficient in making the drinks and submitting orders. Wonderful choice if you want authentic French cuisine. There are many choices and the food is a delight. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining. The tables have plexiglass shields between them. The staff is friendly and eager to please. You know they are smiling even though wearing face masks. Recommend the house burger and the croque madame. Must add a fun cocktail or a glass of wine to complete the French dining experience. read more

I had not had the chance to revisit Nice Matin for some time, so I was disappointed when a friend and I sat at the bar at 3:30 pm and we had to share the apervo plate that we had to request twice while a man next to us was given the single one all to himself. I was impressed that the barman had me taste the glass of wine I ordered before pouring a full glass, so that was an upside. Last time I was there patrons ordering "an adult beverage" were given a delicious three-tiered tray of snacks. A depiction of this could be seen the day we were there in a promotional photo of two women sitting outside. Times change, belts tighten but the nuts and olives were not what I remembered and I regret urging friends visiting NYC to have the adult beverage. I should have stayed current, but I am now. When we arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty but it filled in over the next 40 minutes. I am sure it is still a fine place but like other things, not what I remembered. read more

Had a great brunch with 3 friends today. Everyone was very happy with their meals and the service. A special thank you to the staff, by mistake I had booked the reservation for the wrong date. This review is based on two experienced: Dinner in 2016- 4,5 stars as they'd say en France. Brunch yesterday ( 11/2018) 2 stars. My boyfriend and I ordered the fresh fruit bowl ($11) and the steak frites ($27). He also had the fresh squeezed OJ. The service ( a mostly non existent waiter named Joshua) was absent and sloppy. They brought our fruit bowl out first......and then another 20 minutes later (which we sent back as the first was mostly underripe cantaloupe and overripe strawberries). Another 15 minutes pass and they bring the steak frites.... with no steak knife. Mind you we had now been at the restaurant for well over an hour and had only seen our waiter once. The steak was very well flavored.. but over cooked. Definitely not "medium" as requested. I don't want to just base Nice Matin on this one experience- it was the Saturday of the Marathon and we sat outside. I know chefs don't like brunch and pass it to sous chef etc so Im hoping this is a brunch fluke. I've seen Nice Matin do better. read more

My roommate and I were dying for brunch and got lucky finding a last minute reservation. It was beautiful outside so it was very busy and service wasn't as quick as I'm sure it normally is, but there was one server handling it all very well with the help of what looked like her manager. I got the classic eggs Benedict and the freshly squeezed OJ and my roommate got the grilled chicken sandwich and the classic mint lemonade. We both loved our meals and this was the best eggs Benedict I've ever had! You can tell that this is an UWS staple. I can't wait to come back! read more

Very nice classic French bistro. Had one of the specials which was a trout filet in a butter lemon and caper sauce, with a potato purée and sautéed spinach. Simple and delicious - cooked perfectly. Also tried the side of broccoli rabe sautéed in garlic. Very nice. A good wine list, including by the glass, not surprisingly French- focused. Also a nice cocktail menu. This is my second time coming back here and I it was fantastic. For a great French restaurant in a prime location, this restaurant is relatively inexpensive for the type of food you get. My friend and I started off with fresh warm bread and the Escargots a la Provencale, which were delicious. I then had the Spaghetti a la Marseilles, where the fresh pasta and seafood were perfectly paired with the sauce. For dessert, I had the Vanilla Creme Brûlée and my friend got the Apple Tart. Both were great, but I'd preferred the Apple Tart. Had a great experience at this restaurant, and I plan to be coming back in the future. read more

Just alright... nothing wrong with our meal except how $$ it felt. A salad for close to $25 just feels wrong, especially when it felt like something I could've made for a fraction of the cost at home for the same amount. Our server was hard working however not super attentive. The restaurant is beautiful, in a great location, with ample outdoor seating in an outdoor-indoor set up in the UWS in a popping section of the neighborhood. The ahi tuna salad was great, with just the right amount of sear on it... Except that the tuna wasn't warm by the time it got to our table (boooo). I had an absolutely delicious dinner here - started with the roasted eggplant and tomato purée soup followed by the chicken paillard salad. The chicken was made to perfection and the wine sauce it was cooked in was so light but savory I wanted to lick my plate. I am going to try to recreate this dish at home but have no hope of getting it to be so delicious. The Creme brûlée was not the best I've had, a bit dry and grainy, but it was fine. The service was outstanding, I let the host know I needed to catch a train out of Penn station, the waitstaff was super vigilant about pushing my food through and I was out walking to the subway in an hour. This is a staple on the Upper West Side, so I was expecting amazing food and service. I didn't get either one. The food was dated and completely over-sauced and heavy. Steak frites - Over reduced au poivre sauce and cold french fries. The steak was cooked perfectly I must say. Crab pasta - was ok, but rather heavy. I feel like this place is trapped in the 1990's. The decor and food needs to be revamped and modernized. I felt like I was eating on a tacky cruise ship, because the decor is just old and tired. I realize they have their older regulars that they cater to, but Nice Matin really needs an updated menu to appeal to a younger and more health conscious clientele. With many options in this genre of cuisine on the UWS, I will definitely spend my money elsewhere. read more

If you wanted one more mealy piece of toast you paid $12.00. We asked for a fruit bowl. Normally it comes with yogurt but they said they could bring it with just fruit. It was little more than half full for another $12.00. The eggs benedict was a good dish. Hopefully they will stop price gouging and can get more starts for sure. read more

Disrespectful, tacky, prejudicial manager ruined my Christmas experience at the restaurant. After my aunt and I finished eating our Christmal meal, I paid the tab and she gave our server a generous cash tip. Almost $400 between the two of us. The most I've ever spent at a restaurant and she's low-income but we didn't care because it was Christmas. As we were getting ready to leave our table, the manager, who hadn't even introduced himself to us or talked to us at any other point, abruptedly came to our table, stopping us and holding the receipt saying "THERE'S A LINE HERE FOR GRATUITIES AND YOU DIDNT PUT ANYTHING". ***How tacky can you be?*** We're two black women so he automatically assumed we were doing something wrong, but could he have had the common decency to at least ask the server ***before abruptly accusing us like bad children and humiliating us in front of multiple other tables when we did absolutely nothing wrong***? And who reprimands customers about a tip anyway - on top of the fact that we did in fact give a tip and spent almost $400 just between the two of us. That tacky, disrespectful manager ruined my Christmas experience at the restaurant. I regret supporting this place and it's making me upset thinking about it now. The garlic soup was not as tasty as we would have liked, nor were the mussels. The duck was excellent and the fish was good as well. Our server was friendly and efficient and we liked her very much.
