I do love this cafe, they give ALOT of food for your money which is a pro for some but I usually can't finish my food when I go here. The food quality is 10/10, coffee is pretty good here. I do love the server here, rosemary, she always makes us feel welcomed. She always comes back to check on us to see if we need anything and she remembers we always order coffee and water. Her customer service is very genuine and not forced like other places I've gone to. Every time I go there I always expect to see her and get disappointed when they have someone else there that day because I do enjoy that she can have a conversation and still serve others instead of just bringing us a check. I grew up in Chinatown, and Nick's Cafe has always been one of my favorite mom-and-pop spots. It held a special place in my heart for years. I recently moved to Whittier and decided to make the drive back just to have breakfast here again, hoping to relive some great memories. Unfortunately, the experience was nothing like I remembered. When I walked in and sat down inside, no one greeted me. It took about 10 minutes just to be acknowledged or handed a menu, despite there only being two other people in the restaurant. I'm not usually one to write reviews, but this experience really left a bad taste in my mouth, and not because of the food. The food was actually delicious, as always. What really disappointed me was the service. I noticed a plate I believed was mine just sitting there on the counter for another 10 minutes before it was finally brought to me. The server, whose name I believe was Mary or Marie, had a really unpleasant attitude, like she didn't want to be there at all. On top of that, she was venting loudly to a coworker about another employee, which felt very unprofessional and frankly, uncomfortable to witness. If you don't like who you work with, maybe it's time to move on, not take it out on the customers. What happened to the old energy of this place? I remember being greeted by a young lady named Kim, who always had a bright, uplifting spirit and stayed on top of everything. She made the experience feel welcoming and personal. Over-rated by a solid star, maybe more. This place is a solid three star breakfast place, nothing more than a greasy spoon that has available parking in an okay location. This place thrives due to its proximity to downtown, not due to the subpar quality of the food served here. Even on a slow day, service here is horrendous. Wait staff are territorial amongst themselves, and wait staff monopolize their work area the same way some pets protect their food bowl during feeding time. Staff here do not care if a customer has to wait to be helped or attended. Staff here are unconcerned whether a customer has to wait an 15 extra minutes to be attended and finally place a quick order to go. Service here leaves a lot to be desired. I will circle back and give them a second chance to bump this review up. For the time being, no bueno, no bueno at all, avoid at all costs if your time is worth gold, and you are looking for decent service. You are much better off going to Denny's or Phillipe's down the street. You will not receive decent service here, you will be instructed to sit down, wait, then wait some more while the wait staff gossip loudly with other customers who are simply trying their hardest to gobble down their meal and leave. Staff here do not respect peoples valuable time. The worse culinary experience any one of us can experience is to be grossly misled and tricked into supporting a business that does not care about their customers or the quality of their product. I hate leaving such a low review because I didn't even get to try their food, but the service was horrible. We came in at 11:40 on a Friday and they sat the two of us immediately and took our drink order. They brought our drinks out, gave us menus and we never saw them again. No one around us was being served in any way at all. No orders being taken, no food being brought out, nothing. Unfortunately when you're on break from work you don't have time to wait around so finally at 12:15 (35 minutes after arriving) we left some cash on the table for the drinks and left. I understand being busy, but in my opinion you have to stop seating people if you can't service the people who are already waiting. They didn't even give us a heads up that there might be a long wait. Maybe this restaurant is notoriously busy and we didn't know? But there were grumbles coming from all around us so we didn't seem to be the only unhappy customers. read more

What a fantastic restaurant! Got there early and was the first person in. In the short time I was there the people started piling in. ​Was greeted by a server that has worked there for 14 years. I asked for some recommendations and she took me through all the customer favorites. It was hard to decide but ended up ordering one of my favorite breakfast dishes that I end up getting at almost every restaurant that serves it. The CHILAQUILES! I've been here last year and this year for New Year's Eve. I like the atmosphere inside. Seems old school, small coz like diner. Service is fast too, kind of an in and out place. The have indoor seating on barstools and out door seating. Both times I've sat inside. Today we had the sausage/egg plate and the steak/egg plate. The steak was so tough my carpal tunnel was acting up because it wouldn't cut through. The man next to me also ordered the same and asked to return it and for sausage instead. They offer eggs plates, scrambles, benedicts, burgers, hot dogs, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, pancakes, waffles, and grilled muffins. My friend and I shared the breakfast burrito and the breakfast pastrami sandwich. Both items were good. Simple and tasted home-made. My favorite thing here is their muffins. The carrot cake muffin is delicious. Their grilled muffins are their house specialties and for good reasons. Nick's cafe offered four different choices of muffins to pick from on the day I was there. Chocolate chocolate, blueberry, banana, and carrot. We couldn't pick so we had our server surprise us with what she thinks we should get. She picked the carrot muffin for us and it was so good. Super yummy with the cream cheese icing. The cream cheese icing is rich, sweet, and I can eat tons of it. I like that they heated up the muffin. The muffins do sell out so try to stop by early in the morning to get your hands on them. Service is awesome with a capital A! Our waitress was wonderful. She was amazing and did a great job. The next time, I want to try their biscuits. Plus, I'll be getting at least a dozen more of their muffins! read more

I came here with a group of people. The waiting area is right next to the tables where people eat. There was a group ahead of us that had a dog. Their dog started peeing right next to the tables where people were eating. I know this is an outdoor seating area, but it's still a food establishment. It was very unsanitary, you can tell this was not the first time something like that happened, as their floor is filthy. They could really stand to power wash their floor, especially if they are going to allow dogs to pee where people eat. You pay high prices to eat next to dog piss. read more
