The aromatherapy scalp massage is pretty awesome. I was really happy with the cut, it's what I expected from a Aveda concept salon. Prices aren't cheap, but you do get what you pay for, and what you expect from a good salon. It sorta helps that somebody attractive is going to be the one that makes you look more attractive (otherwise you question their taste), so ask for Eileen, she's really, really attractive (and super-duper cool) and will make you look (or at least feel) super-duper fly. read more

I've been going to Nirvana for over three years now. I love all the stylists there. Everyone has a great personality and they are all extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date on styles. Kayla is my current favorite. She fixed a bad cut I had gotten while out of the area. She's amazing! I'm never going elsewhere for a cut, that's for sure. I love the ambiance. It's very Zen. Someone is always willing to help you and greet you as you come in even if the receptionist is not at her desk. I've been going here for years now and Shawna is my stylist. I've been going to Nirvana now for 5+ years... specifically Kayla. This is more than a 1-trick hair place though... so if Kayla wasn't around, I'd probably ask Janis to do my cuts. The place is nice and quirky enough to be amusing. There have been minor missteps in my last two appointments (I'm not recommending their on-line appointment system as there may be some glitches there), but they've done their best to make up for it. This is an Aveda place so if you're anti-Aveda for some reason, you're not going to like it here. If you don't have a preference for products, then you really won't be disappointed by what Aveda offers. Their "extra" freebie services are great.... the neck rub, the aromatic journey, etc.... I tell you, if I could, I'd come in every day just to get my hair shampooed! The funny thing is I remember coming to Nirvana for the first time when I first moved to the Bay in '96. Los Gatos was too far for me to go to after I moved up from Palo Alto to San Francisco.... but when I moved down to Santana Row, I thought "why not" again. I'd met a stylist and said I'd visit her salon. She said "Nimbus" but I was still thinking "Nirvana". That little misstep resulted in the last 5 years of good hair care. It is a small (hole in the wall) place and I brought my kids - they were very tolerant and my kids did behave surprisingly well... even though the 21 month old spilled the cards everywhere. Just got a haircut with my Living Social coupon and it was amazing. Just wish the location was a BIT easier to find. I was super late because I was lost but they called me and guided me over! It is across from Dolce Spazio and you walk down the alleyway when you see Trends Salon and it's on your right. Feels sort of like a yogic garden. It is definitely boutique and small but still an Aveda salon filled with wonderful aromatic oils. Rhitany was great and listened to what I wanted, which wasn't much since I just wanted a couple layers and a slight trim. I got nice scalp massage with oils, a shampoo and conditioning spray, a hand massage, and a hair cut which she took her time with even though I was late. I would definitely come back for their junior stylists, I hate cutting my hair and can't justify spending that much for something I won't upkeep. read more

I had been looking for a new hair stylist for a couple years, because I was never "quite happy" with the one I had. After trying out several hairdressers, I am finally HAPPY! I'm SO glad I found Kelly!! She listens to exactly what I want, and if i'm unsure....has awesome ideas for me. My color is always amazing, and she never trims too much (thank goodness)! It's so crazy beause I never really buy products from salons because they can be pretty pricey. Kelly recommended a product to me that she even uses herself and it wasn't too expensive, so I decided to try it. I swear, my blonde/processed hair breaks less and is now longer! Last Saturday I received one of the worst haircuts I've had in years at this salon. I don't think the stylist listened to a word I said. I wanted my bangs left long, but they were cut short and uneven. I wanted the back cut bluntly so it would curl under, but instead it is overly layered and has no movement. I wanted the sides to sweep back and blend with the back; instead they were cut to come forward and it looks like I have a mullet. When the stylist showed me how it looks in the mirror I didn't say anything as I did not want to hurt this person's feelings (and did not want it cut anymore), but I cried on the way home. I'm devastated because I have a big party to go to on Friday and now my hair looks awful. read more

I went this salon over a year ago. I had highlights done. I forgot the name of the colorist. They charged me $170 for the work. After she was done she had another young man wash my hair. After he washed my hair, he wrapped the towel around my head and dried if by squeezing the towel on my head to get some more of the water. He proceeded to take the robe off of me after he removed the towel and said, "We're all done now, how do you like your color.". I said, "It looks ok, hard to tell it's still wet." He said it would be extra to blow dry my hair . He just assumed I wasn't going to pay for styling my hair. I became upset because I wasn't even asked if I wanted my hair styled or dried. He was going to let me walk out of there with wet hair. I responded by saying, "Well could I just use your blow dryer to dry it ." He responded by saying that it would be extra. WHAT?????? I just grabbed the blow dryer in the counter and just finger combed my hair. Afterwards, he proceeded to walk me over to the counter and gave me the bill. I gave him my card and didn't leave a tip. I mean c'mom $170 is a lot for highlighting hair anywhere, even in NY. If was going to have problem paying, do you think I would have mind paying another $20 to $30 to leave a salon looking gorgeous. Several things that was wrong about this entire experience: 1) The colorist didn't come back to do a quality check. 2) Nobody wiped off the color that was left on my forehead and ear. I mean they were going to let me go out into downtown Los Gatos with smudges on my hairline! on a Saturday afternoon!! 3) For that kind of $, I usually have my hair dried and styled at other salons. I was very embarrassed to walk out of there with damp, tangled, hair. It looks like I just woke up. I got to my car and BF was taking a nap in the car, when he woke up and saw me, he was like "What happened to your hair? It looked better before you walked into there." I will never go back and I've made sure that my friends know about place too. I mean, even if the guy that washed my hair was new, the master colorist should have come by to check and when she should have stopped me from leaving that place looking like a mess. So upset even till this day just thinking about it. I hate to be a hater, but but that place is small and dark, it was like salon hell. I had been living in CA for a few months when I decided to chop off my hair. And I mean chop (12 inches chop!). Love this salon, I've been coming here since I was about 16 (I'm 24 now). I've seen all the new apprentice & junior stylists do better and better and now they are all very good senior stylists. They are ALL friendly, experienced, and professional. My favorite is Shawna- I've been seeing her foreverrrrrrrrr! I started seeing her when she was a senior stylist, so I have to pay a little more now, but I'm okay with that because she's so talented! She's SO sweet and nice and knows exactly what I like. I'm a brunette, but she's been doing a combo on my hair and I loveeeee my blonde hair, I always get so many compliments. For xmas she gives me a travel size of my favorite aveda product too. =D It's a little cramped in the salon, but they seem to handle the space well and it never seems crowded. They have tea, coffee, water, cookies, etc available for you in the sitting/waiting area, and always offer to get some for you when you walk in. read more

I have been getting my hair done at Nirvana for the past 9 years, and it is as fabulous as everyone says it is.. Everyone is extremely talented and friendly, but Kayla is amazing! She's been my stylist the entire time, and I still go religiously even though I live in Napa.. she's the only person I want touching my hair, and it's always worth the trip! My color and cuts never disappoint; she is a perfectionist and I really appreciate that about her (since I am one as well..) I also got this new thing called a "brazilian blowout" on my last visit, and I have never been happier with my hair! I have long, thick, curly/wavy/sometimes frizzy hair which I used to spend at least 40 minutes in the morning blowdrying and straightening.. After the treatment the time I spend was cut in half, and my hair looks healthy, smooth, and shiny.. Simply amazing! Never gotten so many compliments! I found Nirvana through Groupon. I was set up with Raymond, and my first session was great. I had recently had a bad haircut from a different salon, but am growing my hair long, so it was basically a consultation and quick, dry trim to cut the ends since he didn't want to work against what the overall goal was--length. I felt like someone was finally listening! He didn't even take the groupon and let me use it for me next visit. Six weeks later, for my next visit, my first real cut there, Raymond and I again discussed how I'm still growing it out (it was 2-3 inches past my shoulders), and how he would cut 2 inches (which would still be slightly past my shoulders). I ended up with hair just below my chin, with absolutely no shape whatsoever. It is so shapeless I cannot even wear it down. I made an appointment for the next week to go back and have it fixed, but Raymond didn't want to layer it since that would take longer to grow out. Instead, he took the appointment time to show me styling tips. I HATED all of them. While I appreciate that he didn't want to take more off, I wouldn't have been crying in his chair if he didn't take off too much in the first place. He did recommend a brand of extensions and that I could buy them myself and come back and he'd show me how to style them. I ended up doing that, and last night (2 weeks after the previous incident), I went in for them to be dyed and to see how to do them myself. Even though I explained to the receptionist everything I needed when making the appointment, she only gave an hour for all of this, scheduling people back to back. I ended up waiting almost 2 hours (should have been only 30 min) for Raymond to get back to be with the dyed extensions. They also ended up looking like trash. My hair is too short to blend in properly. Also, when I got home and saw the extensions in better lighting, they didn't even match my hair color like they were supposed to! If I was out in the sun, they would have been COMPLETELY obvious! I essentially just wasted $200 and 3 hours of my time. I have my Master's graduation in less than 2 weeks and job interviews coming up, and my hair looks awful. Thanks, Raymond and Nirvana. read more

I had a Brazilian blow out done with Jessica yesterday and I have to say the entire experience was OUTSTANDING. Jessica was patient, explained the procedure, answered my questions. She even pointed out flaws with my hair cut which she fixed without charge. The salon itself is a little small but tastefully done. They have great coffee and snacks. Overall, I would recommend this salon in a heartbeat. I love that it is GREEN salon and all products have to be approved before they are available for sale or use. Everyone I saw there was very pleasant and always smiling. The other great thing is they actually have stylists there on Mondays, how unique is that. It is way more flexible then the typical los gatos salon. And, if you are considering a Brazilian blowout, I highly recommend you have a conversation with Jessica. read more

I bought a Groupon for Tiffany to do my hair. I've been blonde for a few years now, naturally am a brunette, and I've wanted to go dark the past few times I've got my hair dyed. I haven't got the results I've been wanting so I am very happy to say that tiffany got it right! I showed her a couple of pictures of inspiration and she did the rest! I have to say that the bob haircut at Nirvana was not the strength of my stylist at all. What he did is what people call a bowl cut, done with a really big bowl. Just put the bowl on the head and cut all the hair around. Finish it will pouring some smelly, sticky stuff on the top of the head, style as hard as possible and voila, simple as that. Styling he can do pretty well, that I can say, because after washing I realized he would have better used that bowl, the cut was uneven on both sides... Add a refusal to change anything when he saw that I did not like the cut, and you will get my experience with Raymond. Julina at the same salon used to keep me consistently happy for nearly half the price I paid Raymond. But she is not there anymore, so I will not be returning. read more

I'm a hair snob. It took me a month or more to finally book an appointment, while I researched area stylists and salons. And agonized. I have fine hair and wear it short and spiky. I mention that as when I was looking at yelp and stylist reviews, I noticed that some stylists seemed to specialize in certain types of hair (long, curly, etc.). Short hair can be difficult to style and still look feminine, or still look cool and sophisticated. Shawna is my new stylist; and amazing, at that. I've seen her twice. Both times she did full color and cut and has done a great job. I highly recommend her. I'm fussy. She's been great at adjusting for my personal likes, thinning when needed, or texturizing my hair a little more -- adjusting color to highlight my features. Service is good. One of the first things you notice about this salon is the framed positive magazine write-ups are many years out of date. This should have tipped me off to the type of salon this would be. I'm surprised this salon has been rated so well. The tiny waiting area is a bench by the front door and once you've checked in with the receptionist/salon manager you get assessing stares from all the stylists and clientele. Maybe it's because I was in running pants and a t-shirt? Personally, I never get dressed up for a cut/color. In fact I deliberately dress down because I tend to book these appointments on my day off. The aromatherapy massage was nice in concept but unpleasant because of the scent I chose. The shampoo girl should have done a better job of explaining what the essential oils were instead of just asking me what I wanted. Once the stylist took over she spent approx 15min telling me how busy she was currently and going to be in the future because this wasn't her only job as she was going back to school. It was a big turn off and made me wonder how hard making an appointment with her in the future would be. She then made disparaging comments about how poorly my hair was cut. I muttered that I'd been searching for a good stylist for approx 2 years since my last stylist moved north. She did a decent job layering my hair, but spent the entire time talking to the salon manager in the mirror. I felt a bit like a dummy head. It wasn't the worst cut I've ever had and because I wanted to be fair I returned one more time for a wash and blow out which was scheduled with another stylist as mine didn't work that day. Long story short, I do a better job letting my hair air dry than she did blowing it out. Overall, unimpressive and the salon didn't earn any more return visits. read more

I love, love, love this salon! I have been coming here for a long time and don't know why I have never taken time to type out a review on YELP. My hair artist is Shawna and she has taken me from black to blond, red, brown...you name it she has done it and always with beautiful resuts. Not to mention I love the AVEDA products they use in my hair always leaving it healthy and beutiful. My hubby loves the smell and feel of it when I get home and of course the end result of my color and cut . I have very thin hair and some how she manages to make it look full and with tons of volume. Shawna has steered me in the right direction with products and cut. Went in for a Brazilian blow out with Shawna. She's friendly, knowledgeable and overall a great stylist. I have fine, wavy hair which became super dry after a recent highlighting episode. The blowout cut down the volume and the frizz but I still have some of my waves. Shawna said the volume will slowly restore in two weeks. I saw Laura today for the first time and can honestly say this is the happiest I've been after getting my hair colored and cut. She is incredible! I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do, I had a very basic idea and wasnt even very sure about that. I felt like she read my mind and came up with the perfect idea for my hair. She took the time to explain the colors and how my previous color would react to the new. She was very up front about pricing, what she planned on doing and gave detailed answers to my questions about what kind of style would go well with the shape of my face and my skin tone. In addition, the scalp massage, aroma therapy a d hand massage was amazing. I had previously experienced scalp massage, but have never been so pampered at any other salon. I have been coming to Eileen @ Nirvana for over 3 years now and I am always happy with the service I receive. She listens to what I want and makes great suggestions when I am unsure of what to do next with my hair. I have never been disappointed in a cut or color. I bring my daughters here as well...the childrens cuts are SUCH a good deal and great quality. Honestly, I am surprised by some of the lower reviews. This salon is not over-priced and everyone on staff is very friendly. They spend a great deal of time training their stylists.
