I hate Starbucks. I hate them for their coffee, and political bullshit. I don't know what this guys politics are, but he's a hard-working, struggling businessman. Coffee is excellent and the foods are delicious. When I'm in the area I go even for just coffee. The staff is very congenial and attentive and it's refreshing not to have to be waited on by pinheads. We just moved to the area a couple months ago, and the Ugly Mug has quickly become our go-to for breakfast. The coffee is delicious and prepared by friendly, welcoming staff. The food is delicious and portioned well (I recommend the Ugly Mugwich). Haven't tried the wine or beer, but I noticed that they carry mostly NC local breweries The aesthetic is neat--very steampunk, not a style you usually see in coffee shops which makes it even more unique. This cafe is wonderful! While I've only been here twice, I've been impressed each time! The have an amazing modern atmosphere with good indoor and outdoor seating options. I had my go-to, an iced caramel latte, and it was absolutely delicious. On my second trip I tried their iced coffee and it was wonderful. I liked that they had the classic syrup at a station so I could tweak the sweetness to the way I like it. Their waffles are SO good, they have a perfect texture and sweetness. My sister had the chicken biscuit, which was delicious! And my mom enjoyed her breakfast tacos! When I went on a Saturday they had a pretty long line, but the baristas were great at keeping the line moving. I would definitely recommend this place. Not many coffee shops, let alone in Garner, can boast great coffee and delicious food! read more

I was traveling on business and needed a coffee spot to rely on, and this was just that. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing. I took my lunch hour here multiple times and tried a few menu options, including the adult grilled cheese ( minus the apple butter due to the lack of the ingredient), the veggie flatbread (with some interesting root veggies) and the breakfast tacos (veggie style). The iced coffee concoctions were so tasty and helped me get through my long hour days. I also tried the berry tea at night which was a soothing unwind to my day. On my last day I had to try that big chocolate chunk cookie by the register. Trust me, you want it. Toasted it to perfection and it hit the spot. This is a really nice shop. Their espresso is good for sugary drinks and Americanos (if you put plenty of cream). The drip coffee is pungent and strong. That's why I give 3 stars because the drip coffee is not very good. Get an americano if you want something close to regular coffee. Edit: The good here is wonderful. Ugly Mug Bean has quick service, tasty food, and good drinks. I stopped in for lunch and an afternoon pick me up. For lunch, I ordered the Mediterranean Chicken sandwich which comes with your choice of side (chips, tortillas, fruit, or side salad; I chose the fruit). The sandwich is on a ciabatta roll and has all the right proportions of bread, meat, tomato, sauce, and cheese. I would definitely order it again. I was excited to see they have London Fog on their drink menu. For those who haven't had one yet, what have you been doing? It is steamed milk that you steep Earl Grey tea in (instead of hot water). It is a warming lovely drink that is a treat for me. They have alternative milks including almond and soy. read more

Visited for the first time this morning, and I'm impressed (and in trouble). The Seattle mermaid has been a necessary evil in my life, as there aren't any locally owned coffee shops that are convenient enough for my commute, but my route recently changed and Ugly Mug is reasonable enough for a once a week or so trip. It also looks like a great place to work, so I may be working in some study time there this fall. The coffee is good. When you order an iced drink, they give you the option of espresso or cold brew, which made me really happy. I was so happy to find someone who does the Almond Joy Mocha that I've been missing since Jitters went out of business years ago. It's a touch on the weak side, but next time I'll ask for an extra shot and skim milk to fix that. They do a ton of specialty mocha combos. My sandwich was delicious, very filling (I'll only need a light salad for lunch now), and fairly healthy with multi-grain bread, avocado, cheddar, and a little bit of bacon. The rest of their menu looks impressive, but definitely more of a "bistro" concept than simple coffee bar, so expect the prices to be higher than you're used to. The thing that impressed me most was the staff. They were genuinely nice. Rather than just general polite "have a good day", you could tell that they were genuinely interested in making their clientele feel welcome. Overall, this looks like a great community-hub place, with coffee in the morning, people working all afternoon, and occasional musical events in the evening. Despite being behind a strip mall, there are plenty of trees around to give the patio a more relaxing feel than just "tables next to a parking lot". The person taking my order is either Very nice or clearly tired which I'm not going to get mad at them for because it's understandable, they don't rush you either! The food is great, I have bought the lemon bread and cookie which was delicious! The shop is loud though so you can't really go there to study or do work like at Starbucks. Great Place!! Clean, tastefully decorated, and great food. It took us a while to figure out where to find a menu and where to place our food order, but once we got someone's attention and explained that, they were very helpful. We both got a Breakfast Sampler and they served us some of the best Waffles I've ever had. The bacon was extremely thin and tiny, it would be nice to "beef" it up a bit. Coffee that never disappoints! This is a very cute little spot. They have outdoor seating as well and the handful of times I've been here the service has been great. The baked goods are always good. I've only ate here twice and the first time I wasn't very impressed but My husband ordered a BLT this time around and it was decent. My husband seems tho think they have a new cook because of the other plates of food he saw coming out as he was waiting for our order.
