If you're near or not, the Ugly Mug Bean and Brew is worth the trip. First, the coffee is delicious! I tried the German chocolate hot. Next drink I plan to try is the Elvis iced. But for the coffee aficionados and purist they have something for you, too. The service is SPECTACULAR. I felt welcomed and they answered my barrage of questions regarding the flavors and options. The atmosphere is cozy. Granted, I was there at o'dark hundred and they'd just opened but I'm certain the buzz of people would only add to the feeling. The decor is whimsical and welcoming. Additionally, there's plenty of indoor/outdoor seating and wi-fi. There's even a conference room (reservation required). They're open til 8:30 during the week and THEY SERVE WINE!! I am surprised that I am giving a three star review. Environment: The ambiance upon entering this little café was very cool. Decorations and seating we're cozy and modern. There wasn't an especially upbeat attitude from any of the staff, but I suppose that matched the cool and calm vibe of the place; no one was rude, everybody just seem kind of tired. Ironic. Food and drink: I got my drinks and my food pretty quickly. I ordered two breakfast biscuits, one with sausage and one with bacon, and I ordered the mocha, the cappuccino, the Mr. wonderful, and the double Decker. The sandwiches were tasty. Great flavor and flaky biscuits. Perhaps a little too flaky but I think that's just about your preference. It wasn't an English muffin, it was a biscuit. I felt that the bacon was a little sparse and thin, but other than that I don't really have any complaints about the food. I also had a cookie which was pretty basic but still good. I would say that the coffee was the most disappointing part, I expected something to blow me away, and I was underwhelmed. The best of the four drinks was the Mr. wonderful. It had the most flavor and it was well-balanced, it tasted quite good actually. I would say it was the highlight. But I was so surprised that their cappuccino was so lackluster and their mocha was almost too watery. The double Decker was OK but it wasn't especially great, it was sugary without any balance, kind of like sugar water. Watery is thing that stood out about the drinks, there wasn't much boldness to the flavors and I think they could've done better. I might be willing to give them another chance if someone invited me there, but I don't think I would go out of my way to visit again. read more

Great stop this Sunday morning for a yummy waffle and cup of coffee. Very nice staff and relaxed, clean environment. They have a good selection of pastries along with a decent variety on their menu. Hubby and I ordered the Ugly Mug Sampler. Everything was great! The waffles are so good! And the eggs were cooked perfectly. I would offer a few suggestions. First, serve specialty hot drinks much hotter. My caramel macchiato was delicious but not hot, just warm. Next time I'll order it extra hot. I noticed this has also been mentioned in earlier reviews. Second, and also as previously noted, the bacon should be thicker. It was tasty, but much too thin. If you're going to serve bacon that thin, then I'd suggest giving an extra slice. Next, get a pepper & salt grinder. We asked for pepper for our eggs and we got dirty little salt & pepper shakers and the pepper looked like gray dust. You could really kick things up a notch with just these 3 little suggestions. We'll be back again! Great little cafe! read more

Such a cute little place with steampunk decor. My friend had carmelized brown sugar French toast and said it was delicious and my mugwich was also very good. This morning I ventured into this location and tried their Ugly Sampler, which consists of a Belgian waffle or toast, sausage or bacon, two eggs and a yogurt parfait with fresh fruit. There are approximately 4 to 6 tables outdoors. Cute industrial seating inside, all wood and metal. There is no table service, you order at the counter, grab a table number and they bring the food to you when it's ready. They were quite busy this morning. A lot of people with just coffees, some with their laptops, some actually eating. The wait time was okay, I brought a couple of magazines anyway, to enjoy my day off brunch. I would eat here again. The Belgian waffles are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside as expected. Sausage patties were thin, but flavorful. Prepackaged, I'm sure. Ugly Mug is such a great local spot - and it's right off of 40 so it makes a great pit-stop on a road trip, too! Coffee: A little expensive, but nothing worse than Starbucks. Great experience! My toddler and I stopped in here for a late breakfast and the staff was super friendly! I was trying to look over the menu quickly and keep the toddler SECURE but she was emptying the gift cards and cardboard cup holders on the counter and the staff was very understanding and sweet about it LOL. We decided on a strawberry muffin, a mugwich, and an iced double decker drink. I was super impressed with the food- hot and fresh and really good. My iced coffee was also awesome! No stranger to 95% (if not 100%) of the artisan coffee shops in the Triangle area, it was time for me to expand my search and venture out for the next best cuppa. I had a strong itching to check out this novelty to add to my bucket list of epicurious caffeine purveyance. Unlike many espresso-laden drinks at other coffee shops that leave you with a case of the jitters and an acidic burn, the iced Ace-High, which was 4 shots of espresso, cream, and a flavor of choice (hazelnut, in my case), went down smoothly and left a creamy, aromatic aftertaste. Yum! Compounded to this delight was the tasteful (pun-intended) decor of the place; if I had to describe the interior, I'd say it's a marriage of edgy, funky-fresh, modern-antique Renaissance detailing, eclectic, and industrial aesthetics. The owner is down-to-earth and is cognizant of the fact that a crafted quality cup of coffee should not cost patrons an exorbitant arm and a leg. In addition, the friendly staff members conversed with me, which showed me they truly care about knowing their customers. Amazing coffee and treats and great service. They also serve JPs gluten free desserts here!! This is so wonderful for my teen daughter who was just diagnosed with Celiac disease, (severe wheat allergy). JPs has a designated GF kitchen so it's a safe treat that my daughter can eat without getting sick. Another big plus for me is they also serve "unsweetened" almond milk for those of us trying to stay off sugar. I have not found a place locally that even knows the difference between sweetened and unsweetened almond milk. Haven't tried the wine or beer, but I noticed that they carry mostly NC local breweries The aesthetic is neat--very steampunk, not a style you usually see in coffee shops which makes it even more unique. This cafe is wonderful! While I've only been here twice, I've been impressed each time! The have an amazing modern atmosphere with good indoor and outdoor seating options. I had my go-to, an iced caramel latte, and it was absolutely delicious. On my second trip I tried their iced coffee and it was wonderful. I liked that they had the classic syrup at a station so I could tweak the sweetness to the way I like it. Their waffles are SO good, they have a perfect texture and sweetness. My sister had the chicken biscuit, which was delicious! And my mom enjoyed her breakfast tacos! When I went on a Saturday they had a pretty long line, but the baristas were great at keeping the line moving. I would definitely recommend this place.
