So I was pretty surprised when the technician showed up at my house and the first thing he said was "there is an $89 assessment fee." That's pretty shady. I showed him the message and he said he'd "never seen that before." AT BEST this is a disorganized business where the owner and workers don't communicate. At worst, it's a straight up scam where they lie to and take advantage of their customers. Either way, not a business I'll be giving any more money to.

I found Alex in Yelp and sent him a message late in the evening. To my surprise, he responded immediately. Throughout the entire process, communication was fast, efficient, and highly professional. We scheduled an appointment for the next day. Alex came out, inspected the water heater, and explained the situation clearly. We learned that there was really no practical repair option--the choice was either to replace the unit or continue using it with steadily declining performance. Since water heaters typically have a lifespan of about 10-12 years, and knowing that starting in 2027 new gas water heaters will no longer be permitted for installation in Santa Clara, we decided it was the right time to replace it. Alex provided a detailed, well-organized, and very competitive estimate that included everything, including insurance coverage. The very next day, he returned and replaced the water heater smoothly and efficiently. The entire experience was seamless from start to finish. The work was excellent, communication was outstanding, and Alex is not only highly skilled and professional but also genuinely pleasant to work with. Daniel was upfront regarding the issues we might have with the unit's built in recirculation "intelligence". Rather than pushing the optional WiFi unit ($300+), he suggested looking online as the install is relatively simple. I paid quite a bit less on Amazon. We met both him and Victor who did our installation. Victor even came back on his day off because he took pictures of the installation and decided there was room for improvement! I highly recommend that you consider this firm for your project. While they may have fewer reviews on Yelp!, they are a Rinnai Pro installer--and they're very good with their commitments. For example, they were the only installer that committed to a $100 rebate from the manufacturer. It required some digging on Daniel's part, but he came through on finding the necessary Rinnai Pro coupon for that rebate. We're happy with the outcome. It uses less natural gas than our tank water heater (we had a bathtub that we couldn't use because of its capacity). Note that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has regulations in place that would require all water heaters in the next year or so to be electric heat pump. Hopefully, that'll be reversed with public pressure.

Their estimates ranged from 6,500 to 8,000. I was telling this story to a friend and they immediately said, "Call Steve at SPS." So I did. I spoke with Steve and Vanessa, and from the start they were calm, confident, and reassuring. They told me not to worry and that they could take care of it without replacing the unit. Instead of many thousands of dollars, their quote came in at under $500 total for parts and labor. They ordered the parts, kept everything moving, and scheduled the repair for the day after the parts arrived. Ruben from SPS did the work, super friendly, very professional, and he knocked the whole job out quickly. Everything was clean, efficient, and clearly done by someone who knows exactly what they're doing.
