    Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen
    Stacy S.

It was a cold and rainy day on Oahu (yes, those days do exist on the island), and I was craving ramen but didn't want to drive to town in the blustery weather. I remember seeing that Noods had opened in Hawaii Kai, so off I went to check it out! I had been to their Kaimuki & Windward Mall locations in the past, and I had thought that their ramen was good, so I already knew what I'd be getting. This location is located in the Safeway shopping center off of Keahole St. near the McDonald's. It's a fairly small restaurant with just 4 tables inside that seat 4 people per table, and additional tables on the outside that overlook the marina. Basically you order and pay at the cashier, take a seat and the employee delivers your food. When finished, you put your dishes, tray & trash in the appropriate plastic bins. I already knew what I wanted, which was the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen for $17. Since I arrived between 2-5pm, I was able to receive their special, which is free kimchi potstickers. What a deal! It didn't take long for my food to arrive. The ramen was exactly how I remembered it. It was good, but not fabulous. Noodles were chewy in a good way, but broth was a bit too thin for my liking, and it wasn't garlicky enough. Also the kimchi potstickers were tasty but too spicy for my tastebuds. I'm giving them 4 stars since the ramen is above average and I'm happy that there's a decent ramen place in Hawaii Kai now. I will definitely return in the future.

Are you kidding me?! This ramen bar is located inside a little shopping plaza in Hawaii Kai, and the owner is the sweetest! Upon walking in, you'll see seats on the left side and the menu high above the register in the front. I got the spicy curry ramen, my MIL got the spicy tonkatsu ramen, my husband got the regular tonkatsu, and we got snacks of the shrimp, gyoza, and fried rice. WE LOVED ALL OF IT!!! My favorite was definitely the spicy curry ramen and the fried rice. I liked that the curry was spicy and creamy, and that the fried rice had a peppery taste. The gyoza and shrimp were just gyoza and shrimp, nothing that stood out to me, but we LOVED the ramen! All the broths had such a layer of depth in the soup and was so flavorful! The owner was so kind as well, and she was working hard between taking orders and cleaning tables. When you're done eating, take your bowls to the back counter and you can get a refill of your water there too. All in all, we decided we are coming back again when we're in the area and craving ramen.

Noods Ramen Bar's Hawaii Kai location has been open for a few months....I've been to their two other locations in Kaimuki and Windward Mall. Ordered online...menu appears standard for all three locales. Requested Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen for takeaway. You can select an option to have all accoutrements - char siu, ajitama, etc. - separate from the noodles...and that is what I chose. I don't recall ordering the Black Garlic Tonkotsu before and it lived up to expectations. Noods ( do they make their own? ) were al dente...broth was piping hot in it's separate container. Flavorful without being too salty or oily. Prices are reasonable. Hours are 1100a till 900p daily. Plenty of parking in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. Noods is situated on the makai side.

Noods in the Neighborhood? Yes, Please! It is always exciting when a new spot opens up and brings another local option for good eats. Noods in Hawaii Kai is a welcomed addition to the area, especially since there was no ramen place nearby until now. Located near Longs/CVS, next to the former Ba-Le, parking is easy and plentiful. You order and pay at the counter, then choose to dine inside or head out back to enjoy the peaceful view from the outdoor seating. Staff brings your food to the table, but guests are expected to bus their own trays and bowls back to the counter. Easy enough. They currently offer a special from 2 PM to 5 PM, where you get a free order of kimchee gyoza with order of ramen. They were divine, crispy, with a flavorful punch. Chili crisp dipping sauce was the perfect touch. The Black Garlic Tonkotsu broth is my go-to, but today I tried the Creamy Garlic Shoyu with Dumplings, and it was delicious. Rich, savory, and exactly what I needed on a rainy day.

What a great little place for noods and other sides that is surprisingly decently priced. I wouldn't say it's a huge place to eat at. They had a lot of takeout orders when I was there. The fried rice was very good. Would definitely recommend. Great service

Noods, slang for noodles, opened in Kaimuki in April 2020, after it began as a pop-up out of his McCully restaurant/bar called Osoyami Bar & Grill but wanted to give Noods its own permanent space. Noods offered comfort-style and innovative ramen creations with sides. After opening its 2nd location in Windward Mall in Nov. 2022, it expanded to HI Kai Shopping Center in Feb. 2025. This review is for the HI Kai location. The HI Kai location has a condensed menu version of the flagship Kaimuki restaurant. It offers flavors for everyone: * Ramen: shio, shoyu, miso, black garlic, tonkotsu, dumpling soup, shoyu curry katsu, Thai curry, garlic shoyu, tan tan, kim chi, shoyu shitake, tori paitan, truffle shoyu. The ramen bowls are Hakata-style noodles made from Sun Noodles. Its best seller is black garlic tonkotsu. * Vegetarian: shio, shoyu, miso, Thai curry, tan tan. * Sides: gyoza, potstickers, fried rice, chicken katsu, tempura, quail ajitama, takoyaki, hiyayako, edamame, * Drinks: lemonade, canned soda, tea, calpico, bottled water. * Specials: black garlic shoyu ramen from July to Sept. 2025, free kimchi potstickers with purchase of ramen from 2p to 5p. We ordered the black garlic shoyu ramen, shoyu ramen, and char siu fried rice. Both bowls of ramen were presented well and were flavorful with the chewy noodles; however, I was disappointed that they were not served temperature hot. The fried rice could have been more flavorful. While viewing the menus of the Kaimuki and HI Kai locations online, I noticed that the Kaimuki location offered discounted prices on its lunch combo, weekly specials, and happy hour specials; whereas the HI Kai location only offers free kimchi potstickers with a ramen purchase from 2p to 5p. So, if you're looking for discounted specials, the Kaimuki location may be for you. The casual dine-in is a little bit different from the Kaimuki location. You order, pay, and pick up your order at the front counter and then sit at any available table. There is self-serve iced water at a counter on the left side. Once done, you bus your own table and separate your trash next to the iced water. The lone staff worker was very friendly and provided efficient service. There was also a lone cook working in the kitchen. We sat in the indoor air-conditioned dining area which had counters and multi-colored metal chairs. You could also sit outside in the back under a covered umbrella with a beautiful view of the Marina waterfront. There is also covered outdoor seating in the front. The dine-in areas were clean. Hours of operation are daily from 11a to 9p. Located next to Bale Sandwich Shop, free parking is available in this large shopping complex anchored by Safeway and CVS Longs Drugs. Noods is a great addition to the HI Kai community, especially for those of us who love ramen, and hope that their restaurant will be a successful venture for local restaurateur Blaine Nishizawa. Support local!

Same great ramen as the other locations. I liked that this was self serve, order at the front and seat yourself. You get to save on the tip! We had the tonkatsu and shio ramen, both delicious.

Arrived for early dinner so was lucky to get early deal of free kimchee potstickers with order of ramen! Both were delicious. We sat in the back of restaurant which has a beautiful view of marina.

I love ramen and this place is great. I've been to other Noods locations and they're always on point. At this location, you order and pay at the front with the cashier. When the food is ready they'll call you to pick up your food. It's self serve. When you're done, they have a location for you to return your bowl and cups. We got the Black Garlic Tonkotsu (pork bone broth, green onion, chashu, ajitama, menma, garlic chips, nori, sesame, black garlic oil) $17 and Tori Paitan (chicken broth, green onion, chicken chashu, ajitama, menma, nori, sesame, negi oil) $16. We also got an order of the Ginger Scallion Gyoza $7. The great thing about Noods is that all of their gyoza is made with beef instead of pork. The Black Garlic Tonkotsu was excellent. The Sun noodles were cooked perfectly. The chashu had the right amount of fattiness to it and it was tender. I loved the seasoned ajitama. Too bad they only give you half an egg instead of the whole egg. The Ginger Scallion Gyoza was good. I always mix my soy sauce and vinegar for dipping. Even though the gyoza was already seasoned, the dipping sauce just kicked it up a notch. The cashier was friendly. They do a lot of takeout. They have about five tables to dine in at the front. They also have a backdoor to more seating on the outside.

Finally tried Noods which opened in the old Tokyo Noodle location. We ordered tan tan ramen, sides of takoyaki and ginger onion gyoza. In door seating is limited to 4 tables and a few counter stools. They do have outdoor seats in the back and front for those nice hawaiian days. Service at the counter was quick and friendly. They have self service water and orders are brought to your table. The tan tan was very favorable and good toppings of seaweed, agitame egg, ground pork and bamboo shoots. The takoyaki was hot and crunchy. My fav was the gyoza which was covered with a ginger onion sauce. That really put a nice touch to this side. Prices of ramen range from $15 to $17 and sides around $7.

We tried the tan tan, spicy tonkotsu, and Thai curry ramen and we liked our choices. The boiled egg is prepared just like in Japan, so it's very flavorful. The prices are reasonable too and I was offered a frequent customer card. After you buy 9 ramen, you get the 10th free. We'll definitely be returning customers. Great addition to Hawaii Kai.

I'm not much of a ramen guy, but my friend sure digs her noodles. Noods Ramen Bar was the place of choice after pickin' up some crispy shoyu wings from Vons Chicken. I remembered this location used to be a "Bobo Bao" restaurant, but I guess that business folded up, and Noods took over the space in Hawaii Kai. Upon walking into the restaurant we were greeted by a friendly lady (I think she was the owner). After looking over the menu, my friend proceeded to order a Yuzu Shio Ramen, and I just got some Garlic Fried Rice as I thought the garlic fried rice would go perfect with some wings. A nice clean restaurant with minimum seating inside, but the restaurant also had covered outdoor seating in the front of the restaurant, as well as in the back of the restaurant. After placing our food order, we elected to sit outside behind the restaurant. What can I say about the grub? My garlic fried rice was garlicky good, and it complimented the crispy shoyu wings I bought from Vons. As for my friend who got the Yuzu Shio Ramen, she said it was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Reasonable prices for their grub, and outstanding professional service which makes it an easy 5 star dining experience on Yelp! Wanna get some noodles? Check out Noods Ramen Bar in Hawaii Kai!

    Friendly guy to greet you

The weather has been a little chilly recently and I've been really craving ramen. I like coming to Hawaii Kai cause it's not as busy as town. I thought about what I could eat while out this side of Honolulu, and I remembered Noods has a spot over by Longs that I'd been wanting to try. The wacky-waving-inflatable guy greeted me. Upon entering the restaurant, I didn't realize how small it was. If you dine-in, there's like 3 double tables and a couple of counter spots. The menu board is electronic up on screens above the register/service counter. Look at their menu online for your convenience! You order before you sit, and they will bring your order out to you if you choose dine-in. Otherwise, their takeout game is superstrong! You can order online or call in. They also offer free water, self-serve thru the dispenser, and canned drinks for sale. I initially wanted a tonkotsu broth, but the pesto option looked interesting so I decided to get the miso pesto ramen, along with the garlic fried rice, and chili oil pan fried gyoza. Then the nice girl behind the counter offered me the free kimchi potstickers for free with my ramen purchase. Of course I accepted, because why would I say "no" to free food?! The ramen came with all the usual fixings - pieces of pork, menma, ajitama, and green onion for $15. I felt while the flavors were decent, the broth was pretty salty. The garlic fried rice and the garlic chili oil were both very meh and nothing special. Thankfully it was only $4 for the rice but the gyoza was $7. Can't complain about the kimchi potstickers cause those were free. Overall, I think I want to come back to try the tonkotsu broth, but I won't be ordering any sides unless it's free again. Solid 3.5 as food wasn't terrible but could be better and for the really good service and friendly help at the counter... and .5 stars for the wacky-waving-inflatable guy in front.

The sauce to dip the noodles in was good. It was flavorful, salty, and sweet. My wife had a bowl of ramen. I got to try the soup and it tasted really good. I also like how thick it was. I don't like thin soup on my ramen, so this I really liked. My daughter was gulping down her noodles... just shoving it into her mouth. That is a huge thing for me because she's picky with food. We also had the potato mochi. I also liked that one. It had good texture, crunch, and chew. It was brushed with a glaze. The flavor was good. I'm not a chicken karaage guy. But I'm mentioning it because we ordered it. The chicken karaage were good chunks of chicken. Not like other places who give small chunks. My wife liked it because it had more chicken than batter. Service - The Place had good service. The food came out on time. Servers were checking up on us without hovering or being overbearing. They paid attention when we called asking for help. I was listening to the workers, and they seem to like being there. I mean, "work is work", and no one REALLY LIKES going to work. I'm pretty sure we'd all rather be someplace else besides work. Maybe I caught them in a good mood, but, it genuinely seemed like the moral in the place was good and the people working there that night didn't mind being there. Vibe - Small, family vibe. I liked that there was buzz but it wasn't loud. When we came, most of the people there were older, but as we left later in the evening, a more younger crowd started lining up and coming in. That tells me, they appeal to a wide demographic/pallet, which is good. Overall, it's going on the list of places to go back to and recommend. I don't really like going to ramen places during the summer because it's hot. But I would go here.

Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

(They also have a cold vegan ramen) I waited until I tried all three of the warm vegan ramens to post this review. Each one has a different broth but all are topped with charred fresh vegetables that remain crisp yet melt in your mouth. Mmmmm! Love that they have eggplant and kambocha, simply brilliant! And the noodles are medium with a slight curl. They have great texture and a bouncy bite. But let's get to the broths. The first one I tried was the clear broth. It was light yet complex, fresh yet savory. The next one was the tan tan. It was creamy and nutty, rich but not gritty (like some tan tan ramens). The last one was the tomato broth, so unique and distinct. It was tangy yet sweet and aromatic. (note: they serve this with a shaker of Parmesan cheese to use as a topping, makes culinary sense, but I also don't consume dairy so passed on the topping). Now you're probably wondering which was my favorite. I don't have one. They are all different and delicious! No complaints. Only praise for three impeccably crafted dishes cooked with care. I adore that I can come back and eat whatever suits my flavor fancy. They also serve a vegan karaage. Crunchy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside but enough texture to make it feel 'meaty.' They do a great job with this dish serving it with a small salad tossed lightly with a goma-ish dressing. There is also a side sweet chili dipping sauce. I also am in love with their chips. Seems like a quirky item for a ramen menu but once you have it you realize how much sense it makes. Cut thin like air, the potatoes are cooked to golden perfection and sprinkled with Himalayan sea salt. It's a great crunchy starter before a bowl of warm sumptuous ramen and something other than your typical gyoza... Speaking of gyoza, they don't have a vegan option but my hubby tried it and always orders a side. They have options with cheese and garlic toppings too. Hubby has also tried their tonkatsu and shoyu ramen and slurped it ALL up. He was especially impressed with the shoyu ramen. All this deliciousness is enjoyed in an air-conditioned restaurant with an industrial steam-punk vibe. High and low tables accommodates seating for couples to groups. They also have a lovely lanai if you prefer eating outside. Street metered parking is easy to find, and they also have validated parking in the small lot. Junpuu is right across the Blaisdell Center so it is a great option if you're there for a fair, concert, or other event. The servers are courteous and efficient, and I give their playlist 5 plus stars. I usually find myself tapping my feet or humming along to the well-curated songs, classic and retro. If you are Gen-X you will totally understand! I came to Junpuu looking for a warm vegan ramen, I found three. And I'll keep coming back and rotating through their stellar selection of amazingly tasty noodle soups. Well, that and the karaage and chips. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is a MUST-try place. Every imaginable bird seemed to be there: little birds, big birds, one-legged birds, scruffy birds, sick-looking birds, and fearless "gangster" birds that stared you down and swooped in the moment food hit the table. They hopped onto empty chairs, circled the tables, and constantly tried to steal food, making it impossible to relax and enjoy the meal. I understand that outdoor seating comes with the occasional bird, but this was on another level. The restaurant should consider better bird deterrents because the constant interruptions took away from what was otherwise a very good meal. If you order takeout or sit indoors, you'll probably have a much better experience. The food is worth trying, but unless the bird situation is addressed, I wouldn't choose the outdoor seating again.
