My boyfriend and I visited North Italia on a quiet day--there was barely anyone inside, and only one other table seated outside. We opted to sit on the patio, but 15 minutes passed before a server came by, and even then, they didn't acknowledge us. We hadn't been offered water or greeted by anyone after being seated by the host. The other outdoor table had to physically go inside the restaurant just to get assistance, which was telling. To top it off, we overheard a snarky comment from staff about us showing up in gym clothes--as we had just finished our workout and North was across from our gym. The water tasted like tap, and no offer of bottled water. If you're like me and notice that weird taste in water ... then you know. I came by with my boyfriend a few weeks ago to celebrate our anniversary. This was our first time at North Italia. The restaurant was nice but you can definitely come in more casual clothing. There is a parking garage just around the corner, and North Italia can validate for it. The food was all really good! Here is a breakdown of the dishes we tried and my thoughts: White Truffle Garlic Bread: This is an amazing appetizer! The bread itself is fresh and toasted (still warm when they served it to us!) and tastes great alone. The ricotta cheese adds a nice creamy texture and cooling sensation that pairs great with the warm bread. Sure $14.50 is a little pricey, but you get a lot of bread, and the taste makes up for the cost when you're celebrating a special occasion. I will definitely get this again on my next trip to North Italia. Chicken Pesto: Honestly, after the amazing appetizer, I was stoked to see how the pastas would taste. I got the chicken pesto, and it was so good; it was somehow even better than the white truffle garlic bread! The pieces of chicken were very tender. The sauce was plentiful and tasted great. I loved the touch of adding whole lightly toasted pine nuts and capers on top. If I had to critique anything about this dish, it could have used a pinch more salt. The bites I had with capers tasted fine since the capers provided a good balance to the saltiness of the dish, but the caper-less bites were a little under-salted. Overall, I would definitely highly recommend this dish to anyone who visits. Bolognese: My boyfriend ordered the Bolognese since it is marked as their "house specialty" on the menu. He let me try a bite of his dish. I thought this was a solid pasta but not as good as my chicken pesto. After I gave him a bite of my dish, he even agreed that the chicken pesto was better. The Bolognese was fine but it was missing a "wow" factor to bring it up to the level of the chicken pesto and garlic bread. Overall, this dish would be around a 3.5 or 4 out of 5 stars. Affogato: We each got an affogato for dessert, and they were great! The vanilla gelato was very creamy and came with a few small chunks of chocolate and what I think were coffee beans. Mixing in the espresso made everything melt into a delicious creamy mixture. North Italia is a place i'm always recommended by friends and family members so I had to try it out. I went late on wednesday night and was very pleased with the food and service. The restaurant was beautiful with an open bar and amazing atmosphere. Wilma served us and she was amazing she brought us our drinks the scicily margarita and espresso martini. They were delightful as well as our appetizer the truffle bread and our entrees the bolognese and a vegetarian dish that I cannot remember the name of. I started my evening with the Julietta cocktail, which consisted of ginger & vanilla infused tito's vodka, italian elderflower, lime, and prosecco. It reminded me of a Hugo Spritz. Our table shared an order of Italian Meatballs, which was served over creamy polenta in rustic marinara and finished with grated grana padano. We shared a Funghi Pizza and Tortelloni Al Pomodoro. The Funghi Pizza consisted of roasted mushroom, cipollini, and smoked mozzarella. Surprisingly, neither one of us was a fan of the Funghi Pizza. The Tortelloni Al Pomodoro consisted of six cheese stuffed spinach tortelloni served in a ying yang of simple tomato sauce and burro fuso (melted butter) sauce. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SPOT I still dream about this place. I have heard lots of good things and only was able to stop by recently, and wonder why I did not check this spot out earlier. I have been on a search for a tomato sauce that is unique, not the classic tomato sauce but something fun and a totally different experience. I ordered the Squid Ink Mafaldine, so I had no idea what to expect except for getting the squid ink mafaldine so maybe there was a surprise element to this, but omg the combination of the mafaldine and the tangy tomato sauce was out of this world. SO EXCELLENT. We also got the chef's board and the Bolognese and they both were also amazing. The bolognese is special too - I usually never order bolognese bc it's such a classic dish we make at home, but they put their own spin on it and it was wonderful - not too heavy, perfect balance of flavors. Great place for Italian food. Very rustic, modern, aesthetic. Very busy on a later weekday lunch (around 2 pm). Mostly people on lunch breaks from work. Was still able to get seated without a reservation and no wait. Courteous service but my table could've gotten the check quicker or maybe even been checked on more by our waiter. We had to wait awhile to find him and wave him over for our bill. But overall he was very nice and helped us have a good experience. Now with the food, I genuinely believe you probably won't go wrong with any of the amazing dishes. The quality is very high and the food is pretty superb and consistent. Came out very quickly. I got the spicy rigatoni vodka pasta which was delicious and had depth of meaty flavor. All my coworkers' dishes looked amazing too, great large portions! There is one dish I didn't like ... (detailed review below) Farmer's Market Board (1/5) I normally do enjoy well seasoned veggies but this board was really not for me. I thought that maybe it would taste good because it's a good restaurant, oh they probably seasoned and cooked it well. Buttt I really don't think it works. The bread tasted slightly off, broccolini tasted weirdly charred, and the tomato looking beets don't go down well for me. the only thing I enjoyed was the avocado/tomato salad and the pesto sauce. I genuinely could not finish it. But also this is because I think the veggies on the board are cooked to enhance the inherent flavor of the vegetables (and me for one hate the normal flavor of raw veggies haha). so take this harsh review with a grain of salt. but definitely would not recommend this if you have picky eating children. Or just children in general because even me an adult had a hard time trying to finish it. it was also all cold just a btw. Overall will be back to try the other dishes!! I've been to North Italia in San Diego so I was very excited to learn that there was one local to me! My s/o and I found street parking (it's limited). There's a parking garage right across the way that is free for the first hour with validation, and North Italia validates! We were seated right away but it took some time for the server to come to us. I ordered my usual crispy calamari and tried the caesar salad. Both were delicious but I don't think the salad should be $12. It was literally romaine, radicchio, and cheese. They didn't even have croutons which was weird because the menu definitely said it came with them? I don't know, that was interesting. The Chicken Parm and the Braised Beef Pasta were both very tasty. No complaints there- the Parm is always a safe bet. I felt like the service wasn't as attentive which always makes me feel a lack of value as a customer. We'd try to catch the server's attention and they would never see us. FOOD & Drinks: ~ Truffle garlic bread (taste: 4/5; value 2/5) with ricotta cheese (2/5): The garlic bread was tasty and had great texture, but for $14, definitely was not worth it. The ricotta cheese that came with it had little flavor. A pinch of salt and pepper helped it, but overall, it didn't add anything except for a creamy element. ~Squid Ink Malfadine (1/5): I had suuuch high hopes for this one. The sauce was terribly bland. I couldn't really taste the squid ink in the pasta. The seafood was so overcooked. ~Glazed short rib cavatelli (2.5/5): The short rib was tasty and the pasta was cooked well, but the sauce was so sour. All we could taste was lemon. The sauce was also extremely runny (almost like water), and so none of the sauce clung to the pasta. ~Spicy Meatball Pizza (3/5): Really liked how spicy the meatballs were. The crust was good, but the innermost part of the pizza got extremely soggy from the sauce. There were dollops of ricotta, that seemed unnecessary (which again may be because I found it to not have a lot of flavor). ~Pomegranate Mule (3/5): This drink was decent. Had good gin flavor with a pop of sweetness from the pomegranate flavor and carbonation from the ginger beer. ~Breakfast Mule (1/5): So bad lol when we took a sip, we thought it tasted like a rail drink you get for $1 at a club. Took a total of three sips between the both of us. My daughter and I were celebrating my BD. We had amazing experiences with food and specifically how attentive and knowledgeable our waiter was during our dinner. I wanted to have a virgin drink and he actually brought two full sized different kind of non-alcoholic drinks for me to try before selecting one! Wow and both were pretty refreshing, one was a something like a mojito cucumber and the other orange and pomegranate They were out of calamari for appetizers, and he suggested zucchini (zucca) chips and it was an excellent choice. I came to North Italia on a Saturday evening with friends. There is plenty of parking nearby, but not for free. Be prepared to pay for parking or walk a bit further. It was a group of six of us and we made reservations in advance and were seated immediately. I ordered the White Peach Negroni and the Bolognese. The White Peach Negroni comes with aviation gin, giffard peach, nonino aperitivo and fresh thyme. The drink was STRONG, it was a heavy pour of alcohol :) The Bolognese is actually the house specialty and comes with traditional meat sauce, tagliatelle noodle and grana padano cheese. The Bolognese is a must try! Portions are also huge, I had leftovers for lunch the next day and the pasta still tasted amazing after being reheated. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the meat sauce was flavorful... not overwhelming where it drenched the dish, it was just the right portion of sauce and meat :) The staff were attentive, we were checked on throughout our meal. They're not as attentive on a busy weekend brunch like greeting or refilling water. They do validate parking here. I got Crispy Calamari, Zucca Chips, and Strozzalreti. The appetizers were super crispy and not bad, but not amazing. I asked for extra marinara sauce, and the server did not inform us if would cost more. Our server said the Zucca Chips don't come with sauce, but we saw another table receive sauce with theirs. The mushroom pasta was quite mediocre like it needed more taste and sauce. Highly recommend reservations! On a Tuesday, I had difficulty even moving my reservation because it was all booked up. Parking is validated up to 2 hours at the parking garage by Flower Child. Staff is super attentive and gave great recommendations. Even shared some facts - the Bolognese is made in house and the chefs come in at 4:30 every morning to make it. We ordered the calamari - I loved the touch of arugula with it. For the entree I ordered the Bolognese of course and it was to die for! The pasta was cooked so perfectly al dente and the sauce was amazing! My husband ordered the Wagyu Skirt Steak - oh my goodness it melts in your mouth. My coworkers took me here for my birthday. This restaurant is delicious. The chicken parm was out of this world. Very tender, and cooked to perfection. It comes with rigatoni, but I asked for spaghetti instead. The only off putting thing about the pasta is they use Alfredo sauce instead spaghetti sauce they use for the chicken. We asked for the spaghetti sauce on the side and honestly it wasn't a bad mix. Their tiramisu cake was so good. Thank you for the wonderful food and great experience on my birthday. Everything here that we ordered is amazing! They have super fresh pasta, great apps, and the best dessert. We ordered quite a few different dishes. The only dish that wasn't a hit was to Bronzino fish but I think that's mostly because the person eating it was very picky lol. They gave me a complimentary dessert so I chose the salted Carmel busing and omg it was so good! Super rich but the salt cut the sweetness perfect. Just wish I had more room so I could've had more of it. The truffle bread is also a must get! Our waiter was super friendly and attentive and made sure to check in multiple times. Overall, our experience was good but not memorable. The overall vibe and atmosphere was great. We went for a Tuesday night birthday dinner and the place was busy, but we were able to get a table quickly. The service was good but did feel a little slow just enough that we noticed. For appetizers we ordered the zucca chips and bread with olive oil. The bread was fine but not really as crisp as I would have liked. The zucca chips were good but so thin that they would fall apart when eating them. It felt like air. The mains were good flavors but could be improved. The arugula and avocado salad was heavy on arugula but barely any avocado. Chicken parm was standard though a little dry. We also had two pizza, a tie die margarita which was great and the naples white which flavor wise was good but was dry. I wish the white pizza had more of the red onion which gave it a nice kick and maybe more of the olive oil drizzle. I did enjoy my mocktail, the just peachy was very good. Lastly for dessert we got the brookie sundae, definitely more sundae. We kept digging for the brookie but there was barely any there. I would have it again, just in to give them another shot. We ordered takeout from here last night and it was delicious. They are located in the Boro for dining in or pickup. There are several parking spots out front for takeout or you can park in the parking garage. We ordered the truffle garlic bread, meatballs, chicken pesto pasta, and the roast chicken with veggies. The portions are big and enough for 2-3 meals for my husband and I. My favorite was the half roasted chicken and veggies. The meat is so juicy and the entire dish with veggies is so flavorful. The chicken was still juicy even after reheating in the microwave. That never happens with leftovers. The chicken pesto pasta and meatballs are both very tasty as well. My husband loved the pine nuts on the pasta. He's also a huge bread fan and loved the truffle garlic bread. We will definitely make this our neighborhood Italian staple moving forward. read more
