I RARELY travel in to Pasadena for grub but this is my aunties favorite restaurant EVER! We ordered a gang of items for both our tables. Fish soup, Peking duck, Chinese spinach, Salt and Pepper Beef, lettuce wraps! My favorite was the salt and pepper beef. I would give this restaurant a 3/5 for authenticity. There are definitely better Beijing style Chinese food but I was impressed overall. The taro tapioca pudding was really yummy and a great meal finisher. read more

Nice decor inside and well welcomed by staff as we arrived and immediately seated. Not your typical Asian restaurant. More of a slightly upscale restaurant with friendly attentive waiters. So much for us to choose from so we decided to share plates of food. Wish the spicy squid was hotter, but it had nice flavor and tastes great after spicy sauces were brought to our table. Nice to burn off my face so early in the morning. Garlic shrimp was our second choice and the garlic taste brought a nice touch. I chose to mix my Chicken Fried Rice in a little bit of that hot sauce. Somehow their house tea makes your mouth hotter while eating and sipping my tea. Oak Tree Inn has been around for over 30 years. This is a hidden gem located in South Pasadena. Not many ppl know about this place unless you live in the area. The staff are extremely friendly. During the pandemic, I have ordered a lot of take outs. The food quality has diminished in most places and food just isn't the same for take out food. Oak Tree Inn has always delivered hot and great quality food. I get excited when the family agrees to order Oak Tree Inn. In addition, the prices here are so reasonable compared to most places. They did increase the food prices, but it's still dirt cheap and with good portions compared to other places in the area. The best deal in town is to order extra from their lunch specials. They have a lot of on the menu so it's so worth it. I order extra so we have enough for lunch and dinner. My favorite is the sweet and sour pork, beef bitter melon with black bean sauce, and pan fried noodles. The lunch special does come with hot and sour soup for an additional $1.50 which is so worth it and I highly recommend getting a few. You can go wrong ordering anything on the menu. They use high quality food with a perfect seasoning so it's not too salty but enough flavor to go well with their yummy fluffy rice. Rice does go with the lunch special. A great place in South Pasadena for delicious Chinese food. The indoor seating feels like a banquet hall with white table clothes. The service was great - Very attentive wait staff. The food came out super quick - We got the Beef Filet, Squid, Sizzling Rice Soup, and Shrimp. Everything tasted amazing! For two people, this was way too much food, but great for leftovers the next day. We will certainly be coming back. We had their lunch special now it's $10.25 per dish. We ordered sweet and sour pork and tofu with mushrooms in black bean sauce. It was good. This is the second time we ordered here and the quality is still good. My son loved the tofu and the snow beans that was in the dish. When we went there, it was calm and everything was clean. The parking was good enough space for any big size car. Overall, good value for money and food was great. read more

This has been a family favorite since I was a child! I love the family style format because I am able to try different dishes. We always make sure to add the honey walnut shrimp and the egg with shrimp to our order. In addition to eating here with family, it's also a great spot to get together with company workers for lunch or dinner. American Chinese -- Above average. I feel like you have to know what to order here. The Moo Shoo is on point. Not crazy about their black bean sauce. I've heard amazing things about their Kung pao and Mongolian beef. So if you are tired of authentic regional Chinese food and you just need to get back to your American roots. This is the place LOL. They don't take Apple Pay OR Apple Card which I found odd (the latter, isn't it just a MC?) fried rice is good. Haven't messed with noodles yet. Chinese food in the Alhambra/South Pas is tough competition but this place stands out due to quality and freshness. Loved the Steak Filet and the meat was so so tender. My sister and I decided to try this Restaurant on a Sunday morning in late January. We always past by this restaurant and never tried it until now. The menu is quite extensive and they serve lunch specials during weekends $9.25 is cheapest. We ordered fried fish maw, chicken chow mein, and sweet sour fried pork chops. The wait wasn't too long. This is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant now...and only after coming here once. I drove by it, and saw that it was a Chinese restaurant, so I quickly yelped it and saw the reviews...from other Asian people. So I made a note of it and returned that evening for dinner. I was so surprised by the quality of the dishes...we ordered some favorites that I grew up eating in Northern California - dishes that I haven't found a restaurant that I love to have them at here in SoCal. Lo and behold, I finally found it! We ordered the Sizzling Rice Soup - I feel like this is a good measure because the flavors are very subtle. I loved the scallops in this dish. The snow peas could have been a little less crunchy but they were still really good. The crispy rice had a nice sizzle as well. Broth was on point. The beef chow fun - that's always a gamble if you're not at a Cantonese restaurant. But I've ordered this dish at various Cantonese restaurants in LA and haven't found one that I really loved. But this is the best I've had in a long time. The other excellent test - a sautéed vegetable dish with garlic. The garlic/clear sauce that comes with sautéed veggies at a Chinese restaurant can often times be bland. If they get this one right, then it's for sure an excellent chef at the helm. And it was EXCELLENT. We had the baby boy chow with garlic and wow was it sooooo very tasty while still letting the taste of the veg shine through. 2 of my non-asian friends highly recommended this place to me for lunch. I ended up going for dinner but that's ok. The dishes are quite pricey, but probably because the restaurant is in South Pasadena. There's lots of competition for Chinese restaurants like these, since San Gabriel, Rosemead, Monterey Park are so close by. What makes this place unique is that they seem to cater towards Americans. Too much of the same flavoring? We sampled a good number of dishes - hot and sour soup, honey walnut shrimp, stir fry string beans, onion beef, fried pork chop, mixed veggies with tofu, pepper fish, house fried rice, and beef rice noodles - portions were extremely generous. We had enough leftovers for the entire week. But the only item I cared for was honey walnut shrimp - they didn't overcoat the shrimp with mayo. There was still a slight crunch with each. Found a dead fly in my BBQ Pork Chow Mein. They refuse to give us a refund and want us to bring the food back for any action!! Have been going to this restaurant for 10+ years and wanted to support them during the pandemic so decided to order for takeout. 1/4 way into eating found this dead fly and called to inform them. After explaining the situation three times, being on hold for many minutes, and explaining it again to the manager they claim that they cannot give us any refund (we just wanted refund for the chow mein and not the others because we were clearly not going to eat any more of it.) They wanted to "give us credit" for next time but had no clear way of keeping our info on file to claim such credit. They want us to bring the food back.... so my husband is on his way, in the middle of eating, to bring them ALL the food back. And now they just called me and asked for the cc number saying they could refund us!!? I said my husband is already on his way. They want me to call him to turn around because now they can refund us and earlier when my husband called they were "too busy" to take care of our inquiry. Really wanted to support this local restaurant as I always have... but apparently they were too busy to keep flies out of their kitchen and pay attention to their customers in a timely manner. read more

You can smell the oil before walking into the restaurant. If you know what to order, you're set! Keep in mind, that after your meal if you decided to dine in; you will smell like fried food. The restaurant is fine dining (tables with linens and white chocolate dipped fortune cookies with your receipt) compared to most Chinese restaurants. I'm a big fan of their fried fish. I've had their wonton war soup, appetizer platter, beef with broccoli, garlic green beans, etc. but nothing compares to their fried fish. There's a light sauce on the bottom that has a hint of soy sauce with a pinch of salty sweetness. It's not overpowering, and it compliments the lightly tempura battered (good portioned) fried fish. I don't know how you mess up Singapore Noodles but this place managed to do it. I came in for lunch earlier today and was excited to see this on the menu. It has shrimp and char sue (barbecue pork). The noodles usually have saffron on them. This dish is typically loaded with flavor. The dish I was severed was virtually flavorless. Like I said I don't know how. The shrimp just tasted like salt. The pork was tasteless. The noodles barely tasted like anything. I would have sent it back, but I've always been told by my Chinese wife that you don't send food back at a Chinese restaurant ever. Apparently the chefs take sent back food as a challenge to make you sick with the next dish. This was my 3rd time trying this place and I think it's my last. Not sure what kept me from trying it out before now, but I recently started wondering about it and my boss recommended it. So, tonight was my first time going to this restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the low key atmosphere, their huge menu selection, and the attentive staff. Expect to pay $20 pp for a basic dinner combo. Individual entrees run from $12.50 to $17.95 and don't come with sides - so no soup and no rice. That's extra. You do get hot tea and a fortune cookie though. The place is not cheap. I went in hungry and spent about $80. But.... I had quite a bit of food to take home. We ordered (for 3)... assorted appetizers, scallops and shrimp in garlic sauce, sweet and sour pork, beef chow fun, and iced tea. Food came out quickly and hot. Everything we ordered was delicious and I was pretty full. Was super excited to learn they deliver within 3 miles... with a $45 purchase though. I'll come back again. read more
