I ended up taking 2/3 of my meal home because the portions are big enough for two.

I learned that over 750+ book entries were received! Wow! At my table, I ended up meeting a librarian, a teacher and a publisher. The librarian was part of the selection committee and she suggested so many good books! She mentioned a book about octopus conversation in the atolls and my ears perked up. The book is Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler and its on my shortlist to read soon! Waiting for it on Libby! OK. back to the venue. We had the side part of the bar and everything was outside so that was nice. Service was great and Zach did a great job getting everyone's orders. I started off with a special edition One Book, One Brew beer, brewed in the Kolsch style and limited edition beer by Chula Vista Brewery. Nice, crisp and summery beer! Fries were average. The roasted broccoli had really good flavor, I expected the broccoli to be al dente but it was cooked to mush and drenched in sauce. The grilled wedge salad was decent, there was a slightly bitter taste to it. I know it says grilled wedge but the experience of biting into the salad and it being both hot and cold was not pleasant. Cocktails: I tried the Honey Ryder and New Wave. These were recommended as the more fruity/sweet cocktails. You can definitely taste the alcohol but it's only 2oz so it's not too strong. Ambience: 10/10 I got seated downstairs by the bar. Only thing about downstairs is that it's too dark to take photos unless you use flash. Overall, I agree with the other reviews saying to go just for drinks and appetizers. I would go again just to sit upstairs and get drinks and take pictures. We left unsatisfied and ended up getting in-n-out after.

Wife got the Stop Light Trio tacos which comes with three tacos (the green-chicken, raw brussels, cilantro crema, the yellow-butternut and spaghetti squash with a mango habanero salsa, and the red-hanger steak, pickled cabbage, onion, and salsa roja). Now, this is where I have mixed feelings because the service before we even arrived was absolutely brilliant. We were celebrating my friend's birthday, and I had a cake delivered through Instacart ahead of our reservation. The restaurant was SO on top of their communication. They even messaged me personally to let me know the cake had been delivered and was there waiting for us. When we arrived, my friend had a personalized birthday menu with their name on it, which I thought was such a thoughtful touch. Between that and the communication about the cake, I was thinking, "Oh yeah, they are ON IT. Tonight is going to be amazing." Unfortunately, that level of service did not continue throughout dinner. Our waitress was nice, but we had to remind her about things multiple times. We waited quite a while for our bread and had to remind her about it. The bread ended up being comped because of the wait, which I appreciated, but later she also completely forgot my margarita. For an upscale steakhouse, the service just wasn't as attentive as I expected it to be. Now let's talk about that bread because PLEASE, please, please get the bread. It came out warm and fluffy, and the butter complemented it perfectly. I had seen pictures of it beforehand, and it absolutely lived up to them. Honestly, it was one of my favorite things we ate. I believe it was around $9, and while I personally think bread should be complimentary at a steakhouse at this price point, I would still order it again because it was THAT good. We skipped appetizers because nothing really jumped out at us and went straight into our steaks. My friend and I split the 20 oz Bone-In Ribeye, and my other friend ordered the 14 oz New York Strip. We asked for both steaks to be sliced, but only the ribeye came sliced. I was also surprised by the size of the 20 oz ribeye. I've ordered 20 oz bone-in steaks at other steakhouses, and this one looked noticeably smaller than what I was expecting. Between the two of us, I think we each got around three slices. For a 20 oz steak that we were sharing, it just didn't feel very substantial. When it came to the sides, though, WE CLEANED UP. We ordered the Mushroom Fricassée with wild mushrooms, garlic and thyme; Dirty Hash Browns with trout roe and crème fraîche; Mac & Cheese with fontina and herbed breadcrumbs; Grilled Asparagus with sauce vert, lemon and amaranth; and the Potato Purée with butter and chives. And this is what makes the entire experience so frustrating: the food was actually delicious! The flavors were there. The sides were good. The steak tasted good. We genuinely enjoyed the taste of what we were eating. But almost everything was COLD. And I don't mean, "Oh, I wish this was a little warmer." I mean our food was cold. We spent around $350 on dinner, and somehow our meal came to the table cold. When they brought our steak out, we were specifically warned, "Be careful, the plate is hot." I remembered the warning at first, but later I went to move the plate with my bare hands and realized...the damn plate wasn't even hot. A manager came over and asked how everything was, and we told her exactly that: the food tasted delicious, but it was cold. She asked if we wanted anything reheated. Reheated?! That response really threw me off. At an upscale steakhouse, after ordering steaks and five different sides, I don't want my dinner reheated. I want it to come out hot the first time. And that really sums up my experience at Born and Raised. I think it was so disappointing because I was SO excited about going. I want to be fair and say this was NOT bad food. The bread was fantastic. The sides had great flavor. The steaks tasted good. The personalized birthday menu was adorable. Their communication before our reservation was excellent, and the way they handled my friend's cake genuinely made me feel like they cared about making the birthday special. That's why I'm so conflicted. Everything leading up to dinner screamed top-tier experience, but once we actually sat down and started eating, everything became very lackluster. Having to repeatedly remind our waitress about things, having my margarita completely forgotten, one of the steaks not being sliced as requested, and then having an expensive spread arrive cold just did not match the level of restaurant Born and Raised presents itself to be. For a roughly $350 dinner at an upscale steakhouse, I don't think expecting attentive service and hot food is asking for too much. I really, REALLY wanted to love Born and Raised. Unfortunately, for me, it just did not live up to the hype.

I went to OB Brewery once before in a tipsy stupor attempting to have a good time with people I didn't know very well. I wasn't drunk, but preoccupied and noticed a few things while not really paying attention: The environment is relaxed, comfortable and unique. A three level establishment, I was particularly entranced by the presence of solid wood, the open layout for a stacked building and the rooftop deck that offers the most killer perspective of Newport and Ocean Beach, towering over Sunshine Company and others boasting rooftop views. I called OB Brewery today, a Sunday evening, to ask if wi-fi was available. Using apologetic speech like: "Is it kosher to come into a brewery and bring my computer? Can I do work there? I know it seems weird..." I stumbled across my question after already calling a few other places in OB, some to no avail. Andy, the manager, received my question with kindness, reassuring me I was more than welcome to come in with my computer and that he'd happily give me the password, just ask for him. Upon arriving, Steve poured me a Mike Hess sour at the bar and Andy came over offering the wifi password as my macbook lit up, illuminating my lone face among the groups of friends clearly enjoying themselves at community style seating both facing the street and to the left of the bar. He remembered our phone conversation and then an in-person one ensued. I learned that Andy is a good person, he cares about the new venue he supports and he truly wants more people to experience it. I ate the Quinoa Salad and was delighted with exactly what I'd expected: cool, refreshing, filling and whole. I cannot speak on the other food, but I have no doubts I'll be back when I'm looking both for a place to escape into work-world as well as one to bring friends, drink brews, indulge in a bird's eye view or watch the ocean while enjoying libations. I highly recommend supporting our new Ocean Beach neighbors at OB Brewery. If not for the aforementioned, for the awesome staff and genuine interactions happening among a group of people trying to enjoy, love and be a part of OB as much as we all want to. read more

We drove from north county after reading about "best small brewpub" and they won a gold for their IPA. I was excited, because I never heard of this brewery, and we love drinking and supporting local breweries. I won't comment on how the place looks etc... because we were on a mission to drink this IPA and see what we were missing out on as best small brewpub in the USA. Well, we arrive, place is not too busy, we found seating, and the bartender was very helpful and friendly. But, they are out of their Gold winner IPA for over a week I was told (ahhh man, what?). Then, we notice they only have 3 beers available of their own. Ok, we then tried their Red IPA which won silver I think last year. I don't like reds, but this one was good. We also overheard the bartender tell other people about what is their best food on the menu and so we ordered the Lil Poke. This is were the disappointment came. The fish was borderline, and then it was missing jalepeno-coriander. We are not complainers, refunders, but two strikes. We only go to OB maybe once a year. We left after the one beer Poke and luckily salvaged our trip into brewery hopping. I still need to try this gold winner IPA, and I have no idea why they won best brewpub. I will update the review sometime in the distant future. read more

Actually would give no stars and would love to talk to the head manager or owner because this is embarrassing Meagan the manager and Gilbert in the kitchen also Jamie here are the most disrespectful disgusting people I ever came across in a restaurant business this company needs help and needs to find a better way clean up and employees to represent themselves. You are not only a business, but you're also a restaurant in a tourist area that represents San Diego so you guys being the disgusting people that you are and treating customers the way you do and thinking it's funny is embarrassing. You shouldn't be in customer service at all if that's the way you think it's ok to treat anyone the way they did! This company should not be allowed to be in business. If this is the type of people they have running it not only as the place disgusting and trashy, their attitude matched the same thing. They will be lucky if they don't have a lawsuit for discrimination. Learn some respect and learn how to be better employees!!! These people should not be allowed to be employed when they give a business, a bad name, and a bad reputation! You're not supposed to represent a dive bar with nasty behavior! DO BETTER!!! I had a very very disorienting experience with an Ocean Beach Brewery employee while sitting next door at Cafe Bella. Our group was sitting at an outdoor table at the empty restaurant to eat food from the farmers market. There were no signs indicating that outside food wasn't allowed and we'd eaten here before without issue. We were about to buy drinks from the cafe when an employee from the brewery started passive-aggressively yelling at us from a distance, demanding we buy something from their brewery. Less than five minutes later, she stormed into the cafe and aggressively yelled at us to leave, continuing to yell while we were packing our things and until we were on the sidewalk. When we mentioned that some of us are regulars who visit the cafe and brewery weekly, she dismissed it and claimed she would have recognized us if that were true. It was an extremely frustrating and uncomfortable interaction. It's a shame, because we wanted to support these local businesses but after this experience, we won't be returning. I can see other reviews mentioning issues with this same person, she's a blonde woman who appears to be a bartender and seems very disgruntled by people visiting the farmers market. read more

I went to the place on Christmas week, Courtney was the bartender, she is a bitche. During I was at the place, she called her friends to come over and sit with her. Then she proceeded to tell all the people sitting at the bar to go away and sit at back and make way for her friends. She needed 3 seats, I moved and made available 3 seats. I went to the bathroom and the fucking bitche threw away my bag and jacket to the far end of the bar. and made another white guy sit at the place. I was the only brown person at the bar. Fucking racists pricks. The owner of the bar is Mike something and I will be contacting him about his racist employees and also file complaints to the local business association. read more

Chef's daily Ballantine special has to be the greatest thing in OB right now. Changes daily. I've had about four different versions and each one has been delicious. The porchetta version was to die for, and I easily would have expected to pay $25-$30 the meal. The special was $13 - plus I took the half I couldn't finish home for dinner!!! Not on the menu, but the breakfast sandwich is also amazing. Served a la carte, it is the perfect morning meal. REAL bacon. None of that flimsy Denny's bacon. REAL bacon chunks and delicious roasted tomatoes - served with bottomless champagne. Perfect weekend brunch and my go to on a Saturday Morning. read more

WE LOVED OUR EXPERIENCE! We went to the OB Brewery since we have heard great things about it and we also bought a coupon on Fox 5 Be Our Guest. We actually don't drink so we were really hoping the food would stand out as well as the view and let me tell you.....the food was amazing and view was insane and the customer service was great! They seemed to be short handed but we were not in a hurry and the 2 servers were delightful! We will def. be going again and tell others to go and enjoy as well. Actually, we already have! read more

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. My fiancé and I called many restaurants around San Diego and they had an enormous event fee to reserve several tables for our engagement party... and OB Brewery accommodated our engagement party with 25+ people, reserved a designated roof top space with a bar and the best view in OB. Scott the manager made all this happen and we are so grateful. ** No event fee. Epic. Thank you so much for making our party affordable and an awesome time. Love ob brewery. The views and selection of June shine is awesome. Great food and fun patrons. Staff is typically very friendly. Posting this review Bc sometimes staff members need to remember they are getting paid to work and not to give full paying patrons poor attitude. Added a photo of member that needs to check their bad attitude at the door before coming to work. Otherwise one of my favorite spots to watch the pier have some brews with good locals and visitors alike. read more

Solid brew pub with some of the greatest views in the US. Their beer is quality and they have great guest tap selection. Food was delicious. The Siracha wings were delicious, right amount of spice and sweetness. If you're here visiting this place is a must for locals it's a staple. My pups liked the place a lot as well. This place is awesome. I'm new to OB and went here on a Saturday afternoon while checking out Newport Ave. It was pretty busy, which lets you know they are doing something right. The bartender was helpful and very personable. They have a rooftop bar/patio on the 3rd floor as well as a 2nd story game room. All around good vibes here. read more

I got a red wine that was pretty good. For food I got the Greek garden salad with cucumber, kalamata olives, mixed greens, artichoke hearts, cucumber, peppers, red onion, pepperoncinis & feta cheese. we were excited to watch the world cup at alehouse and had just an ok experience sadly…read more first off, the bouncer was giving off weird energy-- he checked my ID and looked skeptical and laughed which was super strange, i was concerned he thought my ID was fake or something but he eventually let me through. my other friends said he was also weird to them too. we had a large party sitting in the beer garden which was a fun & lively atmosphere to watch the game. there was only one server for the beer garden and at times she was nowhere to be found but if she was out there it was super hard to flag her down because she wasn't looking around. when she did help us, she was a bit rude-- my friend was confused about one of the drink specials, and she gave us some attitude about it instead of just explaining it politely. her energy was just a bit standoffish and annoyed to be there. we thought the food/drinks were just ok-- the fried pickles weren't that good, the moscow mules tasted super off, and we actually had to have them remake it but even then it was still not up to par. the pretzels were good however, and a large portion which was appreciated. we also had a bit of conundrum when paying because she told us she could only do 4 separate checks for a party over 8 people even though we've done individual checks before. it made it a bit stressful to pay and it would have been nice if they just initiate a QR code ordering system or something like that, as the waitress was super hard to get ahold of and it would be easier to just pay as you order instead of trying to split the check with a bunch of people at the end. overall, not sure if i'd come here for another game day- it might have been a one-off but was hoping for friendlier service and better food/drinks. the atmosphere was very fun though so that was appreciated!
