Please hire more cooks. Please train your cooks, and sharpen their knives. We got the last pieces of our to go order a full hour after we got the text reciept of the order after ordering at the counter. It sounded like they lost pieces of the order at least twice because the girl who took the order came back out to figure out what we ordered twice. The sushi was just OK, not the freshest fish I've never had, but acceptable, and not spoiled. On the other hand it looked like the fish was cut with blunt scissors. Just why? Our overall order was four bentos and two simple rolls. I've picked up more than that at other busier sushi places after less than 15 minutes, that's including hot food. Their menu seems a bit lengthy at first glance but I can honestly say I've never tried anything I didn't like from Ocean Sushi! Service is always friendly and as a regular, it's nice to know that a meal from here will be as tasty as you remember the last one was. Besides their tasty menu, they also have a nice selection of drinks from Hawaiian Sun juices to varieties of Japanese beer and sakes, as well as snacks and even condiments for your japanese cooking needs. Wonderful little gem in Monterey. They have a variety of Japanese food and you can order to go or there are a few seats available to sit and eat in as well. I came here because it was in walking distance from my hotel and I wanted to something light like sushi for my dinner. I ordered a variety of items all vegetarian and they were delicious! I appreciate the attention to detail by packing my food carefully and taking my order over the phone. Before I begin this review of Ocean Sushi I must first clarify something to a few idiots who claim that I don't know anything about Japanese cuisine. I am part German, Japanese and Islander. I was born in Europe and raised for the most part here on the Central Coast. My Father was from Hawaii and all the men in his family were taught how to cook. So let me start with my review of Ocean Sushi. This is a small hole in the wall business that offers a decent selection of Japanese food on their menu. Prices are reasonable and the food is alright. The only dish I didn't care for was the curry with beef. Sadly it didn't come with any beef so one star deduction. The Teriyaki was good and well prepared as was the Tempura. The Sushi I ordered was also good and I order it without seafood because of food allergies. Parking can be difficult because of the location but overall this business is a decent place for reasonably priced authentic Japanese cuisine. read more

Wow I can't believe this place has a 4 star rating, Monterey must be in desperate need of semi decent asian cuisine I originally tried to order the chicken curry but they were out so I changed to beef, wife and daughter each got a ramen (original and chashu). Took over 30 mins to get our food, but there were a few folks ahead of us When I got the beef curry there was not a single piece of beef, when I pointed that out to the boss lady she said and I quote "the beef melted inside", I have never heard of beef melting so that was a first. The ramen noodles were supermarket noodles, the broth was lacking, the eggs were not the soft centered eggs but hard boiled eggs, and the chashu were sliced off pork chops and far from remotely authentic To top it off they require customers to wear masks but their own cook wasn't, see picture Worst ramen and beef curry we've ever had, stay away!!! read more

It's very rare that I give 2-stars but... here goes. (To know I'm not usually too critical, especially on privately owned places, check my review stats.) We may have hit an off night tonight. Or maybe they've changed ownership or staff since the majority of 5-star reviews. Who knows? What I do know is tonight it took forever to get our food. That's not usually a huge deal but my son was with us and it's a school night. :-/ Also, more importantly, one guy came in and ordered well after we did, clearly knowing the workers, and then left way before we got our food... that was frustrating. Another issue was that our orders came far apart from each other. We weren't planning on sharing but ended up having to, then still waited a long while after for my food to arrive. My $16 dragon roll was soggy on arrival. The jumbo spicy tuna roll tasted like it was spiced with something powdery. And my oshinko daikon was very sweet tasting... Booh! It was nice that they offered free barley tea. There was nothing I would I reorder so I definitely won't be back. The older I get, the more things I forget. Thankfully [for the sake of others], I haven't forgotten to take showers and use deodorant...yet. Before stepping into Ocean Sushi Deli, I apparently forgot to leave my expectations at the door. While Monterey has some wonderful restaurants, I don't think Asian food is their strong suit. When it comes to small, family owned businesses, giving anything less than 3 stars especially for a local favorite makes my heart sink. However, there also comes a point where I can't sugarcoat something that's less than mediocre. Our meal at Ocean Sushi Deli was not only the most disappointing meal we had that weekend but the prices were very expensive for a "hole-in-the-wall". To put things in perspective, their $20+ combo bento boxes (build your own since they don't offer combos) were on par with what you would get at a non-authentic Japanese restaurant in Daly City/San Bruno except these places charge 50-60% less. Seriously, I couldn't help but feel jipped. Perhaps, the red flag should have been their insanely long menu. Don't get me wrong, I love variety but a menu should never have over 300 items (bentos, donburi, teriyaki, udon, soba, ramen, curry, onigiri, and a plethora of sushi) divided into over 20 panels around the deli. IMO, do 20 items well rather than 200 items mediocrely. The long menu also makes ordering both confusing and overwhelming. I've been craving a good Katsu Curry but couldn't order it here since I'm MSG intolerant and was told by the cashier that they use boxed [Golden] curry that contains MSG. While I appreciate their honesty for using boxed curry charging $11.95 for it is cray. To make things easier and to not hold up the line going through 300 line items on the menu, I got the same order as Mr. NSS: Chicken Teriyaki & Shrimp Tempura. We also ordered three pairs of nigiri (sake, hamachi & lobster salad), 1 beer, 1 soda, and the total came to $61!!!! I was in shock by the total. We didn't receive an itemized receipt so I itemized our bill as we were waiting for our order. Five pieces of shrimp tempura (price not listed on menu) was $21. Ridonkulous! Of all the high-end Japanese restaurants I've been to in SF, they never charged more than $3 a piece. Anyhow, we received our order within 10 minutes. It's self-seating and there's only 5 tables so someone should snag a seat while the other orders. The Miso Soup oddly had carrots and zucchini in it and tasted like chicken broth. The Chicken Teriyaki ($11.95) was so overcooked and dry that the texture was stringy: http://bit.ly/1r5Rhco. The teriyaki sauce had a weird essence of curry. Love this place. When I travel, I often try to find a local place to dine and this place exemplifies local eats. In terms of choices and value, look no further than Ocean Sushi. After finding this place, you should be able to find some parking on the street. This place is a little small so go slow or you might miss it. Upon coming in, you can't help it noticing menus everywhere. If there is one thing that needs changing, it's the menu. They have everything and every possible combination as well. Luckily, I did some research and noticed they have a Sunday special. For $10.99 you get a albacore tuna bowl that has rice, teriyaki chicken, side salad with a vinegrette, miso soup. The water, roasted green tea, mugicha are all off the side and you can help yourself to them. Looking around the store, you can find some little things you can buy to go. From snacks to some own home made good in the fridge by the checkout. Oh, yes , if you go frequent enough, you can get a stamp card. I had to decline as the last time I was in Monterey it was about 10 years ago. Also noticed the nihonjin that dined here next to us ordered nabeyaki udon. I love it here, and that means a lot coming from San Jose where there are endless choices of Japanese food. I spent a whole week in Monterey for a birthday vacation, and we ended up eating here 4 times. Four times! The menu has so many choices that I wanted to try as much as I could before having to go back home. I had the tendon (tempura shrimp donburi), avosake roll (avocado and salmon inside out roll), tempura shrimp and veggie bento (two tempura shrimp pieces, assorted tempura vegetables, miso soup, rice, pickled vegetables), avohama roll (avocado and hamachi inside out roll), the sunday special ($14 on sundays and comes with teriyaki chicken, a bowl of rice with seared white tuna and shaved daikon on top, miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables and seaweed salad), and the salmon teriyaki bento (salmon teriyaki, rice, miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables, seaweed salad, and a creamy little pasta salad side). Every single thing I ordered was perfect and the food always came out very quickly. The inside of this place is small and homey, and they have a table where you can pour your own free water, iced tea, or hot tea. It's Japanese comfort food with reasonable prices and excellent quality that reminds me of being back in Japan. Wanted to mark this day, got to spend time with my Mom and Dad here and we ordered the Katsu Curry, Tekkadon, and Rainbow roll. Both my parents said it was good; the sushi and don. I also concur with the Katsu Curry. My old school mom and dad would normally say oishikunai, at other Japanese food/sushi places. A really first-rate sushi place. Food is well-cooked (or not) and delicious. Love their donburi bowls--especially steak and shrimp. Their sushi is straight excellent with no excess sauces and sweeteners. I think this the best sushi in Monterey area. Second is Crystal Fish--though they tend to slather on the sauces and dressings. Probably 3.5 stars. We came to eat here while spending the weekend in Monterey. The place feels very "old school," no frills. The menu is extremely extensive, which was exciting and a little troubling at the same time. At any rate, we stopped by for a quick bite to eat. We had a chicken teriyaki bento, california roll, and the nabeyaki soba. There was another soba/udon dish on the menu (not the ones on the walls, but the actual paper menu) that seemed to have the exact same food as the nabeyaki, but was $2 or so cheaper that I didn't notice until later. I wonder what, if any, the difference was between the two. Anyway, the chicken teriyaki was done quite well, and the tempura that came with it was tasty as well. The california roll was as good as you can expect from a deli type situation, and actually tastier than a number of places that charge way more in the Bay Area. The nabeyaki soba was unfortunately not the best thing to order. Instead of boiled chicken, they provided a few pieces of tuna, which was interesting. Otherwise, the soba was a little overcooked (I probably should have ordered the udon) and the rest of the dish was just okay. I would definitely come back to try other things though! read more

In town for the Big Sur marathon, so tried to find somewhere a little off the beaten path to avoid the crowds. This looks like your typical hole-in-the-wall kind of place. They have a few tables and several bar seats if you want to eat in, as well as some premade items you can take to go. Service here was quick and the staff was very friendly. Definitely study the menu before you come here. They have a lot of menu items and it can be overwhelming seeing their huge list in the store. I ordered the shrimp tempura udon. Udon was nice and chewy. The shrimp tempura was cooked perfectly. Broth was also delicious. If I had more time here in Monterey, I'd definitely come back here. read more

Ocean Sushi isn't like a typical restaurant. You will not have a waitress or be served. That being said..... it was a great experience. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked through the door to the time we left. The inside seating area is small, and the place is pretty busy so there can be a little bit of crowding. There are some items in a cooler pre-made, but the rest you just walk up to the register and order. You then pick a table, and by the door is complimentary water and hot tea. I want to say there is something else, but I can't remember. We had a bigger portion of gyoza which was perfecto! I ordered a spicy tuna roll with rice paper, and the Miki roll. I couldn't really taste the lobster at all in the roll, but nevertheless all of our items were extremely fresh. I would definitely recommend coming here. The food was fresh and very reasonably priced, and the service was great even though it wasn't typical "server" style. read more

I have enjoyed this restaurant over several years. My wife and I first visited it about 10+ years ago. I never reviewed it then, but would've given a similar response. We always get sushi, but the past few times my kids and wife have tried the teriyaki and udon. This time, I enjoyed the OG ramen with a half happy island roll and nigiri. We continue to come to this restaurant / Japanese deli EVERY TIME we are in Monterey or Carmel. Great selection of cooked and raw Japanese cuisine, coupled with a friendly and helpful staff. The atmosphere is like a deli / takeout location but the food is outstanding in price performance. I can't really suggest any specific dishes because they have all been wonderful - so instead I would encourage you to step away from the typical and try things you haven't had before... we haven't taken a wrong turn here yet! read more
