Dinner gone horribly wrong. I've been wanting to give this place a try for a while and unfortunately I've should've completely passed on ever coming here! We came here on a Friday night. There were a couple tables open and were able to get seated right away. A few min later, there were people waiting to be seated. We ordered a couple of drinks, the Blue lagoon and a lemonade. The blue lagoon (a blue drink) was a bit too sweet for me. For dinner we ordered the following items. - Mixed vegetable tempura - I liked most of the veggies, the shrimp was too greasy and limp, not very crispy at all. - Beef tataki - this just looked completely wrong! It was cold, hard and brown! We sent this dish back immediately. - Yellowtail sashimi - hubs loves yellowtail sashimi and always orders it. One bite and it was too fishy for me to have another bite. - Karaage - this was ok. - Kakuni Kamameshi (Pork belly rice kettle) - seasoned rice with pork belly, egg (probably too raw), pickled ginger and onions on the side. We enjoyed this... but after going home for the evening, within hours neither of us felt good and I was sick and not eating anything else for the rest of the weekend! I think there were probably too many dishes that could've been the culprit that made us sick, but overall I think the food and unsafe food handling practices probably did us in. Staff was nice though. Small parking lot was packed. We won't be back and BEWARE! I hope this review is the warning you need to stay away from this place! NEVER AGAIN! Series: 1 2025: 58
Back a second time this week to try some different things Beef tongue kettle rice- simple but flavorful. Tender beef tongue, fragrant rice Creamy mentai udon- spicy and creamy. A great combo Duck soy ramen- ramen was ok but the duck was overcooked and kind of tough Beef sukiyaki with rice- a reliable and filling dish with light flavors, nice and warm. Happy hour: handrolls- a great deal and so so good. As always- we get our favorite: blue crab salad. Huge chunks of fresh crab Others: karaage, eel and avocado roll, takoyaki. Another yummy night!
So so good! I went for an early dinner Friday night, around 6pm. Good buzz of a variety of customers--singles, couples, families, friends, etc. Seated straight away. Friendly, professional staff. The menu haa lots of choices, and the food is very home style and comforting. My karaage craving was satisfied. So hot, light, crisp and flavorful. My daughter loved her deluxe curry udon, and I enjoyed my Saba Shio Yaki dinner set hit the spot. Draft Sapporo beer, yum. Mango soda with a shot of soju, double yum. This was my first time to this location. There was a chill vibe and I look forward to returning. (Note...I just realized my previous review was for Wa Okan on Convoy! I have to figure out how to move this over there...I'm so sorry for any confusion!)
OKAN DINER Review: Melon soda, was 10/10 and I think they make a liquor version of it! Fresh made salmon onigiri: 10/10 I dont think I can go back to the Mitsuwa/Marukai refrigerator kind Chicken Nanban: Included miso soup, salad, and side of rice - I give it 7/10! It was tasty but I think it was a little more bland than I expected, but I also should've have been more adventurous for my entree. Overall: 10/10 because the service was good, it wasn't busy! It seems like a little hidden gem right off the 805! Clean and chill, this place really hit the spot.
Great place to hangout with friends and grab a bite to eat. Lots of food selection. Great share tapas style. Service is fast and attentive. We ordered on yakitori, salmon sashimi bowl and rice bowl. All so good and just the right portions.
Still the best udon place to come for Uni Udon. Their plating has changed a bit but the flavor is still the best! You can completely finish the sauce as it is creamy and not salty. Parking is great since it is away from the busy convoy streets so if you are in the mood for some good Japanese udon or rice bowls, this is the place to be. They have a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as well. They have switched the bathrooms to be gender neutral. There was only one staff working the hall but still quick to bring out our order and will refill our water as needed.
Went to go eat there and it was closed by the health department. This was my firsthand experience trying to eat here. Yelp removed my first review claiming "it wasn't clear that your review described your firsthand experience as a customer of the business." I literally tried to eat here and couldn't because they were closed for a vermin infestation. Doesn't get much more first hand than that, Yelp. The photo clearly shows the date and restaurant on top of my description. Be honest Yelp! They are now open 2 weeks later with an A rating from the county. Go figure. Still will pass.
Food was good and happy hours was a good deal. I got the duck soba soup, very simple and not bad. The other udon pastas are a bit salty for me. Service was ok
Was seated super quickly on a weekend (dinner time). The restaurant felt super mom & pop and was very casual. Mentaiko udon was creamy & flavorful--the sauce had a perfect balance of the saltiness from the mentaiko, and the flavor really shone through! The tonkatsu broth felt very light in comparison to other tonkatsu broths I've had in the past--if you want a light ramen, the tonkatsu broth is a good choice. Similarly, the duck soba broth was light in flavor as well; the duck itself was a little thick & chewy, but was still good!
This Japanese restaurant was really disappointing. I wanted to give it a fair shot, so we ordered several different dishes but unfortunately, almost everything missed the mark. First, I ordered the carbonara udon, which is normally one of my favorite Japanese dishes. What came out was basically watery udon with bacon, mushrooms, and pepper. The mushrooms weren't seasoned, the sauce lacked any creamy richness, and overall it had almost no flavor. Carbonara udon is essentially the Japanese take on Alfredo, so it definitely should not be watery or bland. After cracking the poached egg the dish ended up being worse. It just tasted like egg yolk with water and udon. I ended up taking a few bites and not being able to finish it. We also ordered the crab kettle rice, and paying over $20 for what was essentially mushroom rice with shredded crab felt kind of crazy. The crab quality wasn't great, and the dish itself was very underwhelming. We specifically asked the server what it was, and her description made it sound much more exciting than what actually came out. Had we known it was just plain mushroom rice with crab on top, we definitely would not have ordered it. To give the menu more of a chance, I also ordered a few skewers. Unfortunately, those were disappointing too. The gizzard had a strong smell that made it hard to eat, and the chicken skin was overly oily with a strange aftertaste. Our bill ended up being over $80 before tip, which felt expensive for the quality of food we received. I'd still be open to trying their second location someday maybe that one is better than this diner but based on this visit, I left pretty disappointed.
i was here a few years ago and regret not coming back sooner! the mentaiko udon was so creamy, buttery and decadent. the agedashi tofu was not done with silken tofu, but i didn't mind it. we also ordered a chirashi bowl and there was so much fish and even uni on it! my brother tried duck ramen for the first time and it was a hit. i need to make it a point to come in more often. portion sizes were very fair and you definitely get a bang for your buck! didn't try but i loved that they had mocktails that you could turn into cocktails on the menu.
Delicious food, fantastic service and great ambiance! Tons of menu choices! We got the teriyaki salmon lunch plate & tempura udon. Really good! We'll be back!
My friends and I dined here last Saturday night, and unfortunately, we had a terrible experience--mainly due to how my boyfriend's order was mishandled. We ordered a chirashi bowl, beef tongue/chicken skin skewers, and a blue crab handroll, all of which were good. However, what soured the experience was the way the restaurant handled my boyfriend's order of the Crab and Mushroom Kamameshi. We knew the Kamameshi would take about 20 minutes to prepare, which was fine since our friends had ordered the Gyu-Tan Kamameshi as well. But when the dish finally arrived, it was the Mentai Kamameshi instead. We informed the waitress, confirming we had ordered the Crab and Mushroom Kamameshi. Rather than apologizing or updating us on the wait time, she simply ran off--without any notice that we'd now have to wait another 20 minutes. At this point, everyone else had finished their meals while we were still waiting. Frustrated, we called another waitress over. She claimed she hadn't heard our order properly, which didn't sit right with us--why not clarify at the time instead of assuming? Worse, she told my boyfriend he "didn't need to be like that" when we expressed frustration about how the first waitress handled the mistake. Having both worked in the restaurant industry, we know that the right approach is to acknowledge the mistake, apologize, and provide an update--not ignore the situation. Had we been informed of the additional wait, we would have ordered something else. When the dish finally arrived, it was bland and completely not worth the wait. We had to add soy sauce and chili flakes just to get some flavor. Eating while everyone else was already done and ready to leave made the situation even worse. Overall, I was really disappointed, especially given the great reviews. I understand that mistakes happen, but the way the staff handled them was unacceptable. Because of this experience, I won't be coming back.
This location is not very busy and usually can get seated quickly. I went at dinner on a weekend and was seated at one of the last empty tables. The interior boasts typical Japanese decorations that immerse you in the culture and cuisine. The beef udon comes with lots of meat slices and the broth is not overpowering. The egg was a bit too runny for my preference as it was not quite like an ajitama egg consistency. The takoyaki comes out hot and was a delicious appetizer/side. read more
Came here on a whim since Yakitori Taisho was not open down the street and I am glad to have stopped by! This location is a place you might just drive by on a regular basis without even noticing so I'd qualify it as a "hidden in plain sight gem"! The lighting and decorations helped to immerse you in that "Japanese Diner" experience. Service was prompt and attentive as we came in right when they opened. I am normally not a fan of Udon at all. Double that with my disdain for Japanese curry and you may be wondering whyI'd be trying to self destruct by choosing a Curry Udon but something told me to order it. I was delightfully surprised by the richness of the soup without the thickness you might expect from something with "curry" in its name. Really wanted to like this place but it was just okay. Came in with a party of 5 around 6ish and there was no wait. Some staff were new and still unfamiliar with the menu but friendly overall. We were charged $1 for spicy mayo and $1 for siracha for our chicken karaage, wished they were upfront about it. I got the beef tongue kamameshi and thought it was a bit bland. My friend got a chicken kamameshi but we had to send it back because it was lukewarm and not hot. They did get it right the second time though and made sure it was hot. read more

Gotta love cold beer and yakitori. I recently visited Okan Diner and had such a wonderful experience. We ordered the chicken and beef skewers, as well as the uni and roe rice bowl--everything was absolutely delicious! The skewers were perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, while the rice bowl was rich, fresh, and a true standout. To top it off, the food came out super quick, and the service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. It's clear they care about both the food and the customer experience. If you're looking for a spot with tasty dishes, great service, and a relaxed atmosphere, Okan Diner is a must-visit. We'll definitely be back! read more
While they are short-staffed, the food is always comforting and service is still great. I'd recommend making a reservation for groups of 2+. The plaza can get full over the weekends, and when I called to make a reservation, I was told they don't accept any for Friday-Sundays. Their curry can be pretty filling, but I recommend trying any of their udon and takoyaki. The front section of their menu also lists any specials they're offering! read more

This is definitely a mom and pop (and son) restaurant type of establishment. And I mean that is the best possible way! The experience of dining here feels authentic. As close as you can get without actually being in Japan. With such simplicity, this restaurant manages to capture the essence of the local dining I infrequently experienced while visiting Japan. This is not the typical rushed experience of a restaurant found in busy urban Tokyo, but more like something you might be lucky to stumble upon in more casual Osaka (I.e. away from the busy city). Although I've visited Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo, please keep in mind that I'm not well-versed enough to understand the regional differences of Japan. I'm simply giving my heartfelt and nostalgic impressions. In short, I simply love the ambiance of this restaurant. And I think the food is oishii (delicious) as well. This amazing little restaurant is nestled in a bustling shopping plaza bookended by Aladdin and Havana, which are frightfully popular on their own. That, coupled with the poor excuse for a parking lot, makes for a very frustrating start for most visitors to this plaza. So Bring your patience or simply park further away and walk. What about the food?! Understand that portions here are smaller than American standards. So if you're a hearty eater, I'd double your orders, which shouldn't be a problem since the food is good. Here's what we tried on our first visit: - Iced Plum wine: makes you think you're sweet like this wine - Other hard liquor on the rocks: makes everything and everyone seem hilarious - Kakuni /Braised Pork belly - ORDER THIS! It takes 20mins to cook, but your patience is rewarded with some of the most tender pork belly your taste buds will every experience. All those meaty juices are absorbed by the rice inside! I could eat three (maybe 4) orders of this dish. - beef skewers: fancy meat, grilled nicely, tender and still juicy - Orishi Hamburg: looked just like what I had in Japan years ago, but had a different consistency and odd aftertaste than I'm used to. Me thinks it's just been too long since I've had this dish made like this. We liked the sweet corn on the cob. - sukiyaki: a favorite of my lady. the broth was sweeter than most, which she found appealing. I'm fond of the beef, which featured a lot of gristle. The tofu soaked up the broth well and made up for the beef. I also killed off all of the noodles. - chicken liver: not my bag, but my girl loves this stuff and thought it was ok, but had a few too many scallions Needless to say we enjoyed our first visit and we intend the brave the parking nightmare here to be able to dine here again soon. read more

We came here on a Wednesday evening and got seated immediately. The restaurant was very clean and the ambiance felt very authentic. We ordered the Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) and the butter Udon. Both were very delicious! My girlfriend just came back from Japan and said the Okonomiyaki tasted very similar just not as crispy. The only complaint was that the Okonomiyaki was much smaller than we were expecting (about 5-6" in diameter) especially for $12. Other than that service was pretty good and we will probably be back to try the other entrees. read more
The udons were absolutely delicious! The Kaarage were super juicy. I would prefer it a little crispier but it's still good. The yakisoba were tasty but pretty expensive for the size. This is something that could be skipped imo. The sukiyaki udon was bomb tho! So flavorful and just perfect in every way. Even the meat was full of flavors. It's a nice little cute spot with a chill vibe. The service was fast and attentive. Parking can be kind of an issue here since it's a pretty small area but we were always able to find one. A little pricey for some dishes but overall great experience and my taste buds were more than satisfied! read more
I was very curious about this location and was finally able to make it with my husband. We loved the homey and casual atmosphere. I had some time constraints and didn't get to try hot pot items. They recommend extra time for them to prepare them. I got sukiyaki udon which were delicious and my husband got sashimi plate and he really enjoyed them. We definitely want to come back with our kids and explore more of their dishes. read more

Yum! Total mom & pops feel here! Everything tastes like yummy comfort food. It's unfortunate that they were short staffed the day we went, but they posted a warning at the door stating that they may be slower. This place is like a fast casual restaurant, basically come as you are. We ordered the carbonara udon which was a unique take on carbonara past and let me tell you, it was super creamy!! We also ordered their katsu-ni dish which had some type of soy sauce & egg -- one of the best katsu dishes I have had in San Diego! Will most definitely come back! read more

I've come here twice now and brought a group of people with me to eat here and they enjoyed it as well. Some of the items we've gotten here included the cream curry udon, deluxe udon, pork belly skewers, okonomiyaki, and sukiyaki meal. The pork belly skewers are very tender and flavorful. The cream curry udon reminded me of one in Japan. All of the dishes were very flavorful, delicious, and fresh. I think the meal sets are really good value since they come with rice, soup, and salad. Staff here is very friendly and I love how cozy and homey the interior of the restaurant is. Parking can be a bit tough to find on weekdays but there is both street and lot parking. read more

Decorations were nice and cozy, with good amount of seating. Service was good and quick. We ordered a few of the dishes. Salmon avocado roll, nankotsu karaage, tsukune skewers, beef tongue meshi. The best was nankotsu karaage. It was seasoned lightly and crispy on the outside, if it's too bland there's also salt on the side to dip it in. Salmon avocado roll tasted like pepper on sushi rice, the rice was also very mushy, which was disappointing. Tsukune skewers were okay, nothing special. Beef tongue meshi was a little bland, I've had better. We came to this place because my partner went to UCSD and it brings him memories eating here. He said the carbonara udon was good. So maybe we just didn't order the right dishes. Might come again if we have more time visiting the area. read more
Extremely busy night for Okan Diner this past Friday. I haven't been here in a while, but the restaurant was full and a wait for two took 35-40 minutes. As this is the diner version of Wa Okan, there are more entree items and food sets offered here if you are looking for something more than tapas style! My go to items here are any of the udon dishes and items on the Dinner Set Menu, as all entrees include a side salad and miso soup. On my visit I tried their Katsuni, which is a breaded pork cutlet with an egg cooked in usually a shoyu broth sauce. The Katsuni was served on a hot pan. Breaded juicy pork was cut into thick pieces and the sauce helped with the balance of the dish. The miso soup had a bit too much miso paste as it was too salty that I could not finish it. I also tried a bite of their Curry Chicken Katsu and the breading was similar to the pork, however, the pork was more juicier in my opinion! I do believe that there are better curry options than the one at Okan Diner. On my next visit, I would like to try their Kettle Rice, as I feel as they are unique, but my overall rating for Okan Diner would be a 3.5 due to inconsistencies with the food, wait times, and service. read more

I was wanting for some cold dipping soba and this place has it! The place is a bit understaffed so service can be a little slow, just a heads up! So they service tables in waves, like bringing out water for ~4 tables in one go. We ordered the beef tataki, agedashi tofu, and tsukemono for starters. I love pickles so the tsukemono had a great variety, about 4 different veggies (cucumber, carrot, a radish and another veggie I can't recall). I'd use these to cleanse your palate whenever! The beef tataki is chilled and definitely a little chewy. However the chewiness is nice in that it just doesn't melt/disintegrate into your mouth right away! I liked it despite the fact. Agedashi tofu was a nice fried tofu with a delicious sauce. I suggest grabbing a piece of tofu and soaking it in a spoon of sauce! The zaru soba was delightful, sauce is super light and comes with green onion and wasabi on the side to adjust to taste. It's great for a hot day which is when I went. I'll return for this again if I'm craving it!! The sukiyaki is very sweet, I'm unsure if it's supposed to be that sweet or if we were eating it the right way. Might not need to sip/drink the broth, just dip the noodles in and eat the other stuff for just a splash of sweet broth. read more

forgot about this place for awhile , since I haven't came in about exactly 2 years and omg i don't know why I don't come here more often ! little cozy Japanese restaurants and homey interior . service was nice , quick and attentive . I decided to order the mentaiko udon and it did not disappoint 10 STARS FOR IT , I'm also a sucker for takoyaki and it was happy hour so I decided to give it a try . It was possibly one of the best takoyaki I've had so far , the batter was the perfect crispyness almost deep fried but not ? My friend ordered the carbonara and we both agreed it was okay ... she said they usually make it better but this time around it was a little watery and soupy . I posted this picture on my instagram story and had a handful of people ask me where and what dish ! Would def recommend coming here n will be back soon . It's the next day and I'm still dreaming about it , plus good portions size + price . read more

there were only two servers/host, quite busy for a friday night. pretty small. drinks were great! tempura was good on top but the bottom was very soggy. all the food was just alright. the okonomiyaki was really really small tbh like the size of your palm :/ was expecting a normal sized one. overall alright :) read more

Everything I ate was amazing Yakitori (limited time)- chicken thigh with wasabi 5/5 So juicy!!! It's very easy to eat a lot even though it's meat. Yakitori (limited time)- chicken skin 5/5 Chewy with a nice crunchy sear, plus a sweet sauce. Mont Blanc cake 5/5 There is a nutty flavor from the green tea and chestnut. On top is kinako, which is sweet and buttery. Inside is sponge cake, cream, and red bean. It's fresh and not too sugary. Dengaku - 4.5/5 It pairs well with the meat since it's sweet and starchy. Try using the extra sauce for yakitori dipping ! read more
Busy place but overall we didn't care for the dishes we ordered. Spicy Garlic edamame seemed to come from frozen state. The edamame were mushy. Flavor is there but it didn't taste fresh. The tonkatsu ramen noodles were way overcooked including the egg. The meat however was tender. The sukiyaki was too sweet. The salmon karaage was ok. I wish the sauce was separated as it wasn't crunchy anymore. read more
Disappointing. The food didn't taste that great to be honest. The edamame tasted like it came frozen and was just heated with the sauce added later. Not that great and didn't taste very fresh. The tonkatsu ramen also wasn't good. The egg was overcooked almost as If it was pre hard boiled and added later. The broth tasted a lot like top ramen from the grocery store and just wasn't that great. The noodles also tasted a little overcooked. I got the sukiyaki dinner set and beware. When it says sweet sauce they aren't joking. This was so sugary sweet I felt like I was going to get diabetes. The miso soup that came with it along with the salad and rice was probably the best part of this meal. I didn't try the salmon kaarragge so can't let you know what that was like but it was the only dish that was ordered that was completely eaten so probably the best of what we ordered. Can't believe I have never been to this fantastic restaurant nestled in a Kearney Mesa food mall. Went there for my daughter-in-laws birthday on a Sunday night. Parking was easy as there is plenty. Get there early as they fill up quickly. The restaurant reminded me of a restaurant in Japan. Very authentic Japanese food and creative. The dishes came out and were just amazing. I had ankimo, fried squid legs, and a dish with the seasoned rice. The toppers were uni and ikura. You mix it up with a paddle they give you. Trust me...this dish will make you dream about it until you return for more! I recommend one of the bowls with the seasoned rice. It takes about 20 minutes for them to make it but is so worth it. If your really hungry just order a few small appetizers to hold you over. Oh I forgot to mention we had the homemade pudding. My son and I shared. So yummy!! read more

Dined here on Friday evening after driving down from Los Angeles. We ordered a good amount of food - and eel & avocado roll, beef tataki, gyozas, pork belly, chicken wings and yellowtail. Do not order the wings - they have NO meat on them, the beef tataki was a letdown, the rice on the sushi was amazing, but there was not a lot of eel. The fave was the pork belly and yellowtail. The service was disappointing, we ordered a pitcher of beer to share and the waitress brought the glasses out with her fingers inside them - not hygienic and unacceptable. The ambiance was cute, and they did have a lot of patrons. Not sure I'd go back. read more
the food here is always solid, very yummy! I enjoy their salmon teriyaki the most. Not sure if the time I had it but katsuni was a bit salty, but my friend who frequently orders it believes it was just that time. I really enjoy the clean taste of miso soup, rice and the dish you choose. they have a happy hours and the atmosphere is warm and homey. the service is direct and nice too. for their lunch special, you can add an unagi rice box which I really recommend and it's so good with the salmon teriyaki. def a lil splurge but worth it! would recommend this place for Japanese rice plates! read more
Okan Diner has a huge selection of Japanese foods which is pretty incredible. For the portion you get and the price I think it's worth it if you're craving some Japanese home cooked food. They do not have AC (when I went during the evening, it was pretty brutal, everyone was sweating). read more

I love this restaurant. Everything is authentic and delicious. I usually order the sukiyaki but the last time I was here my friend got the curry katsu and it looked so good that I am definitely trying it next time. Also the service is always great. The staff is super friendly and nice. read more
Casual Japanese diner with an extensive menu offering yakitori appetizers, many udon dishes, and bento boxes. I'd recommend the beef tongue, curry udon, and sukiyaki udon and mentai udon. Service was okay and the ambiance was nice, intimate. Bathrooms are super clean, and they have a heated toilet seat/bidet!! read more
