Old Town Cafe is a community/family feel breakfast spot in a great location right on the outskirts of City Center. I decided to drop in on a Sunday around 9am for my breakfast fix to be surprised by a line and roughly a 30ish minute wait. I wasn't bothered by the wait, as waiting to be seated regardless of open seating is a common occurrence in most restaurants in Bellingham. Once seated, I was greeted with a friendly smiling face and excellent customer service all around. Food and coffee arrived in a reasonable time from ordering, my coffee cup never went empty, and I received a few check-ins. I ordered the two eggs, home fries, chicken sausage, and rye with a side of a fruit bowl and ginger kombucha (Yea yea... I'm sure you are picturing me wearing flannel too). My over-easy eggs were cooked perfectly in light oil which was the first thing I was impressed with. My home fries were full of flavor and not over salted which made me happy. I would recommend this place to anyone and I will definitely be back when I visit Bellingham. read more

I had no idea there were so many vegan options in Bellingham. We're from Vancouver and were hitting up Trader Joes and checking out the US Costco but wanted to stop in for some brunch. I love brunch. Especially vegan brunch because it's usually scarce or non existent. I got the Garden Tofu Scramble as this was naturally vegan. I was expecting crumbled sautéed tofu, but this was giant blocks of tofu so I assume it's the same as another menu item. Giant blocks of tofu are not my favourite thing, I just usually like scrambles. I think I would skip this next time and go for a wrap or sandwich. I really loved the roasted potatoes though. The beans were a bit bland themselves. My husband got the vegetarian chili. It's a really good deal. I make a vegan chili all the time, but this was quite different. He didn't mind it, I thought it could be better. Everything seems really healthy here and that's great. It could use a little tweaking to maximize flavour but I love really flavourful vegan food myself. We'll probably come back some time we're in the area again. Stopped for coffee sitting outside and added A tasty cup of lentil soup and a piece of wheat toast. Coffee great But.......... What made the morning was the charming gal who waited on us outside! I don't know what took me so long to come here! Such a sweet little spot. Awesome vibe, friendly staff and solid food. It's so hard to find good vegan options in Bham, and I actually had choices here!! I went with the garden tofu scramble, breakfast potatoes and rye bread. All were great. Next time I'll add on a salad as I felt I needed more veggies. Everyone in my family was happy with their order. And the coffee was great! This is my most visited restaurant in Bellingham. Favorite breakfast place BY FAR and they have great lunches as well. It's a cozy ambiance and welcoming atmosphere. The food is quality and well made. I always leave feeling like I've eaten well (and healthy). The staff are friendly and and long timers so they know your face, if not your name... and your "usual." They use ingredients produced and raised locally. I love the French Toast, Huevos Rancheros, #9, #6 (garden egg tortilla)... and just about everything else. This is the place I always bring out of towners and this is the place I always suggest to friends. My son and I had a once a week thursday mornings at Old Town Cafe thing going on for quite a while. Long wait, but the food was spectacular and well worth it. Come early if you want to avoid the lines. The coffee was the perfect cure for a marginal hangover and the portions were plentiful. We visited here for breakfast. It's an old, retro like place that was very crowded on a Sunday morning. We waited for about 40 min to get a table. And then waited another 15 min or so to order, and another 30 min something to get the food. It's a lot of wait. I felt they are understaffed when it's packed. Anyway, we did Chili Relleno Omelette with Potatoes and Sourdough Bread, Coffee and Super Vegetarian Chili. The food is good, it's regular breakfast, nothing really special there. The Potatoes could have been made more crispy on the outside and a little more flavorful. The rest is alright. The bread was fresh, warm with the right sourness. The place itself is noisy, casual and kind of fun to hangout. Overall it's a good place to go once a while. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get breakfast. It's locally owned, and the owners are just straight-up AWESOME people. Easy to find tasty food if you have food sensitivities/allergies. I always bring my out of town friends here, and they always enjoy it. It used to be a lot busier before the pandemic, and I have to admit I like that I don't have to wait 30-45 minutes for a table anymore. We were passing through Bellingham en route for Vancouver and Old Town Cafe ended up being a very pleasant breakfast stop. We're big on the easy stuff - toast, french toast, scrambled eggs. etc. In that regard, Old Town passes the test. I recall their water being served ice-free and abnormally warm, but that's obviously not a big deal. I really dug the location's charm. The morning we came through, we were treated with live music via accordion. Very cool touch. As non-locals, the only tricky part of our visit was parking. The spots in front and across the street from Old Town were chock full for quite a ways down the road. We initially parked in front of Rocket Donuts, but that's a no-no; I believe parking time is very limited there (maybe 30 minutes) with strict enforcement. A waitress was polite enough to offer up a parking recommendation down and around the corner. All in all, our experience was nice enough to turn Old Town into a New Favorite. read more

This place has excellent food! We had to wait for a table for about 30 or 40 minutes, but it was worth it. The prices are about what I would expect for a diner/cafe. Once we were seated our order was taken quickly, and they had some live music entertainment (a guy with a guitar). It added nicely to the ambience. I had a delicious sandwich with homefries and the kids had pancakes that they loved! My husband had a breakfast burrito that was delicious and huge! I have been visiting OTC since the 80s and have always had the Funky Special. The Funky Special is a grill cheese with lots of avacado, a tomato and a bunch of sprouts. Today, I ordered, as did an out of town friend who was visiting, the Funky Special and it was AWFUL. Both sandwiches were cold pieces of toast with barely any cheese and hardly any avacado. I came to this establishment for breakfast on a Monday morning with two other friends. Parking was easy to find along the street, although I had to pay meters ($0.75 per hour). Inside, the space was large enough so that we did not have to wait long for a seat. The service was good as well. In terms of the menu, it is your typical breakfast place. It seems to me that most of the breakfast places all serve the same types of food. It's kind of hard to mess up fried eggs or pancakes, after all. This is a great breakfast place. Food was great, especially the potatoes and toast. They also had chicken sausage, which was a nice change from other places. Been coming here for many years, but while the food is still good, I'm noticing that the breakfast burrito has been getting smaller and smaller. Used to be full and tasty, now about half the size (can now fit sideways on the narrow plate). Still as tasty, but value for money has declined. My wife and 5 year old daughter ate breakfast at Old Town. We are from out of town and apparently have devil horns or conservative ideals tattooed to our foreheads. We were placed on a list, and, when it was our turn to be seated, another party took our place. Another 5 minutes goes by and a name that was not ours was called, My wife exclaimed, "we are out of here", until the kind and professional managerial woman gave us a table. She was sincerely sorry and very professional. She is the one solid thing the restaurant has going on. The food was, of course, natural and organic. The black beans were very good, a little crunchy for my taste, but nice flavor. The pancakes and most everything else our party had tasted odd and was textured oddly. I could let the food quality pass, had the rest of the experience gone differently. The wait staff is generally rude and bitchy. I imagine they would be more accepting had we been locals, if we appeared to be in a band, or, as one reviewer said, wearing Che guevara tshirts and smelled of patchouli. So why can the waitress bring orange juice and coffee, but when asked for a glass of water, she can only point snidely in the direction of a serve-yourself water cooler thing attached to the wait-staff station (not at all obvious, no sign, nothing to indicate water is somehow not worthy of their attention) Seriously, WTF? There was a nice acoustic act performing during breakfast time, one of those 'hipsters who discovered old timey hill-billy music after the movie 'Oh brother where art thou' came out" sort of acts, they are quite common in the northwest these days. The music was a nice touch; however, even those guys were every bit as snide as the wait staff. Traditionally, when a band finishes a song, people applaud and the band acknowledges the applause with a tip of the hat or some kind gesture in appreciation. This pretentious trio ignored the entire reason they were playing at a restaurant in the first place, to entertain customers, the people who keep the restaurant in business because the customers spend their dirty money on food; it is not the other way around. It seems to me there is one person, I can't speak for the cooks, who even gives half a care about the Old Town Cafe being a successful business. I have worked in the restaurant business several years ago, and I know it can be very hard to find good help, but I haven't been that insulted in a very long time. We won't be back, because I'm pretty sure the majority of the staff do not want our type stinking up the joint with our store bought clothes and our acceptance of all people demeanor. We left McCain Country (basically, along I-5 from the Canada border until Bellingham, there are McCain signs along the highway. Maybe they're trying to convince Canadians we're total deranged morons and stay the hell away?) and found the first decent, Yelp-vetted, breakfast place. So, while the northernmost parts of Washington were busy waging war on the entire world as well as Canada, we had a great little breakfast. The tofu scramble was outstanding, highly recommended if you're veggie or vegan. The spices (cumin and tamari) were spot-on, and I as happy to not have eggs for the first time in 3 days or so. I did add the cheddar, though - hey, I'm veggie, not vegan - but you knew that from the egg comment. Service is a little slow, even when you get there before the crowds like we did, so if you're trying to return a rental car on time like we were, you might need to give yourself a little more time. Me and a bunch of friends met up here to have breakfast a few weeks ago. Although they enjoyed their meals, I thought it was horrible. Now, granted, I'm a meat & potatoes kind of girl, but I absolutely love pancakes! So I ordered the pancakes and they were frankly inedible. The syrup was so watered down that the pancakes just disintegrated on my fork. Also, the service was really poor. When I told the waitress that I was unable to eat my food, she whisked it way. But when she brought my check I was surprised to see that my inedible breakfast was going to cost me over $10. I went to the register to complain and was offered a coupon for a discount on my next meal. I was so offended at this measly offer that I got really mad. I told her not to bother as I would never return and paid the bill. I told her I wasn't leaving a tip for the waitress, not only because the service was so poor, but also because I just had to shell out $10 for two bites of food. I will not be returning. read more

I don't think anyone works in this town. Or they are all graphic designers or something that allows them leisurely brunches on Friday mornings. I want to live here and get in on that. This place was bonkers busy. We waited awhile. I got lost in the wall of advertisements for local events and such so it wasn't tooooo painful. Now Listen. I know kids are cool and everything buuuut there is some serious space set up as a kids play area that could be utilized for more table space. Just saying. Kids can play at home. That being said, if you have kids, you'd prolly dig this place. Garden Tofu Scramble wasn't what I was expecting but it was still tasty. Tofu was in big blocks which I am usually not a fan of, but it was cooked perfectly. Hooray for change! The sauce was a little heavy but I ate the crap out of it anyway. Hashbrowns, good.
