Shredded Potatoes w/ Vinegar: I've eaten a lot of potatoes over the years, but this style is quite unique. It's like vinegar noodles, but with supple slightly crunchy potato threads. Lots of tangy goodness to cleanse the palate between bites of the main dish. Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand Ripped Noodles: Just perfect. House made fresh noodles that are so much more chewy and delicious than the dried kind. I've walked by Old Xi'an a few times, going next door for sushi. I was meeting a coworker for lunch, and I remembered that Old Xi'an was nearby. We visited around 12:30pm on a random Thursday and was able to snag a table. You order on the machine and then grab a table. They'll bring your food out to you when it's ready. I had cold noodles with a side of steamed bao. My friend had hot noodles, but the spicy ones. They were both excellent and we both agreed that this was defintitely going onto the rotation. read more

TLDR: great lunch spot for a cold chilly day in Manhattan. Noodles will definitely warm you up from the spice and soup is very hearty. Decided to try this place on a cold winter day and it was extremely worth. The stewed pork with hand ripped noodles were amazing. The pork had a perfect combination of lean meat and fattiness. The noodles had a very nice bounce and the soup was EXTREMELY fragrant. I came in around 1PM at peak lunch hours and ordered at one of their kiosks. This place was a huge disappointment. We were in the area and saw this place and was very excited to give it a shot. I am a big fan of Xian Famous Food and was hoping for something similar. First of all the noodle was not even chewy. It was big, flat, soft and just boring. Did not taste the hand pulled noddles at all. We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup and the vegetarian noodle soup and both were extremely disappointing. The vegetable one was especially bad. It lacked in flavor and just bland and boring. We also ordered the spicy cumin lamb burger and the beef burger. And both were way too salty and lack flavor again. Really a shame...the place is cute and we really had high hopes. Yummy cumin lamb noodles! I got the soupy version, and I really enjoyed the broth! I've also gotten their dry cumin lamb noodles and thought it was very flavorful. I actually like the lamb meat more here than Xian Famous Foods, and thought the broth for the soup version was good and fairly comparable. I don't like the noodles here as much though, they're very thick (vs pulled very thin) and lack the bounciness that makes the dish. It's well priced, and I've only ever had it for takeout so I can't speak to the ambience but the service and delivery has always been quick, and the food is well packaged. I thoroughly enjoyed this place. The spicy noodles were delicious and the chinese hamburger was good too. I wouldn't say it was particularly life changing as I've had really good Chinese food in the past. What I would give this place is that I think the menu is unique in that they don't do the usual dishes that you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant. The service was friendly and the place was clean. It could be a little hard to find as it's not on a busy street and there is currently (June 2024) scaffolding covering most of the signage. Still I'd recommend this place. What I got, was a soup with dark meat chicken, 2 pieces of broccoli, noodles and chopped iceberg lettuce. I got the impression they were saving money by leaving out the best ingredients and replacing with cheap broccoli and iceberg lettuce. ***2 1/2 stars*** This just wasn't my cup of tea. After enduring yet another dreary Friday morning with no sunlight (almost every Friday has been like that for the past month or two), I decided the appropriate lunch to have was dumplings. After pondering and seeing a few nearby options, my Skipper and I decided this was the best of the bunch. She was already a fan from prior experience, and I had a vague memory of stopping here for a to-go order months ago. As soon as I saw the Irish bar outdoor seating next door (it involves a refitted dark green bus I think), I remembered that I wasn't crazy about the dumplings here because they had something crunchy in them - possibly chives - so I reversed course at the 11th hour and got something else. These days/lunches happen. They can't all be gems, even when you do the prep work. It's a cute interior with exposed, dark brick and a lot of big screens separating the tables. Definitely feels like some leftover COVID infrastructure in here (though it doesn't affect the experience). The dining situation here is pretty interesting. It's a hybrid of a takeout establishment and a sit-down restaurant; regardless of whether you intend to stay or not, you order on a giant iPadish device and don't really have any interaction with the staff beyond receiving the food from someone. When we were done, we just got up to leave since we'd already paid at the kiosk. I decided to get one of the more popular dishes here, the spicy cumin lamb entree with hand-ripped noodles (about $15). It arrived insanely quickly - within probably a minute or so. Huge points for that, and it made the lunch hour much more manageable. Aside from a Thai dish or two, this was one of my first times dealing with these types of noodles, and I'm just not a fan - they're heavy, cumbersome and for me impossible to eat with the provided chopsticks. They did have some plastic forks available for poor souls like me though. Also as a palate preference, there were chunks of peppers, etc. that I just wasn't into - I focused exclusively on the lamb meat and the noodles (which probably tells you I'm not the target demo for this type of food). It may be unfair to compare it to the aforementioned Thai food, but I just didn't think it tasted as zesty as that - it was more soy sauce-ish, which I don't find as flavorful (it comes with pretty much every sushi roll I've ever gotten and I ignore it). I'm certainly not going to claim this is a bad restaurant; I could easily envision someone who likes this type of food more than me having a solid meal here. And the price point/service (intangibles for sure) were very good. But I'm more likely to wander into the neighboring Irish bar than coming back here to battle the hand-ripped noodles. read more

Their ordering system is totally automated now, via two kiosks, and after ordering, I got my food (in takeout containers) quickly. I ordered the spicy beef hand-ripped noodles - noodles were nicely cut and cooked, and the sauce was unexpectedly spicy, which was definitely a plus. Beef pieces were really tasty, too - tender and juicy in every bite, with quite a generous helping. The steamed dumplings, on the other hand, were not great - definitely overpriced, and the fillings were just dry and bland. Shredded potato was fine-ish (I really do adore most potato dishes in all shapes and sizes), but for the price I'm also not sure I'd order it again next time. Generally, not a bad experience albeit a bit expensive, and I think it would be nice to come again to try some of the other many noodle dishes - but I'd probably steer clear of most of the smaller side options. read more

Items we ordered as of 7/2022: - Beef burger - $6.95 - Very tender beef and the buns itself was also nice and fluffy. Definitely wouldn't call this a "burger" though. - Chicken Hand-Ripped Noodle in Soup - $13.95 - Missus loved this one. She chose the "Spicy" level and says it was just perfect. Noodles are tender BUT there is a lot of it and due to the thickness it can be quite heavy carb wise. Loved the soup however! - Steam mini pork buns - $7.95 - Not bad but nothing mind blowing. Buns itself had a slight sweetness to it which paired well with the soy dipping sauce it came with. Probably wouldn't get this again. - Beef Hand-Ripped Noodle - $13.95 - Same beef as the beef burger above and same hand pulled noodles. The beef again has great flavor and tenderness. Noodles are good but will get quite filling quite fast due to the thickness to them. If you're looking for spicy noodles, I recommend going for their spiciest option. Their spicy is not very spicy for me personally. The noodle soup was very aromatic and lots of flavor! Came to this spot for lunch with coworkers. The place has a few tables to eat but it's first come first serve. You have to order your food at the counter beforehand and then grab a seat so if you plan to eat at the place I would suggest finding a seat first and then ordering. The prices are typical for fidi I ordered noodle soup and boas for about $30 Service isn't friendly as people don't greet you our really talk to you at all. Tables were clean and workers work hard trying to keep the place clean. I hate that they put everything in take out containers even if you opt to dine-in, they still put everything in plastic and it makes me feel so wasteful. I didn't know the protocol of ordering at the kiosk and taking a seat. I walked up to the lady working there who was packing orders, asking where I can sit, she just hollered "order at the screen." The plasticware and bowls are just inadequate and awkward for sharing food. There wasn't really a bowl if two people wanted to go halvsies on a noodle soup. There was no knife to cut the burger into two so I had to poke at it with chopsticks, making a perforated line to tear it in half. No one working there can be bothered to help. Not sure if I came on an off day considering the review I previously wrote for this restaurant, but the noodles were very unsatisfying that day. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Friday night and so it was easy to order on the kiosk. The food was done really quickly (maybe five minutes or so) which was great, but there was certainly a reason why. I ordered the Spicy Beef Hand-Ripped Noodles and the noodles had no chewiness and were a bit soggy. The flavor of the beef was good though. Pretty on par with the fast food hand-pulled/hand-ripped noodle restaurants in NYC. The small restaurant is sort of hidden on a quiet street in the FiDi. I think most people probably come upon it when walking to another destination, but don't underestimate this little noodle shop. Like many hand-pulled noodle shops, the menu will look familiar to those who have frequented similar restaurants - noodle soups, hand-ripped noodles, cold noodles, a few rice dishes and small "burgers" or Chinese meat sandwiches, which look like pitas. I ordered the Spicy Beef Hand-Ripped Noodle, medium spice. The great thing about the restaurant was that they offered different spice levels for the dishes. The order was a reasonable size and what really surprised me was the amount of beef cubes in the dish. I loved that with every bite of noodle, I had a fair amount of beef with it. The beef was very tender, well-seasoned and flavorful. Since it was medium spice, the order had a good kick to it, but it was easily bearable for someone like me who loves medium spicy food. My philosophy has always been that too spicy and it'll take away from the dish, but not enough spice will result in lack of flavor. Like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the medium spice was jussssst right. The noodle was also very good too and when drowned in the spicy oils with cilantro mixed in it was noodle bliss.
