Visited Omakase by Gino again recently and it was still really good. The omakase includes a few familiar pieces, but there are thoughtful changes based on what's in season, the crab in particular stood out this time. I really appreciate that the menu evolves rather than staying static, which makes repeat visits feel special. My favorite bite is still the akami zuke which is a lean cut of tuna that Gino marinates in soy sauce for about 15 minutes during the meal. Simple, precise, and incredibly flavorful. The space itself is very intimate, with a 10-seat sushi bar and only two seatings per day, which makes the experience feel personal and unrushed. Parking is either street parking or a nearby garage. Consistently excellent and still one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Southern California.

This place was bookmarked for over a year, and we finally tried it. Reservations only, so mark your calendars when spots open up. It's located in Santa Ana, and the interior is quaint and charming. Gino is very sociable and makes convo with customers easily. You sit at the sushi bar next to everyone else, but it's quiet and everyone enjoys the food independently for the most part. It was all couples when I went. Food was spectacular. Standouts were the handroll with Uni, fresh hairy crab, scallop nigiri, Uni and truffle pasta, and the dessert was absolutely divine. One of the Best dessert I've had in general. The reason I docked a star is that this is the most expensive omakase experience I've had, and I've been to a fair amount in OC. I think it is priced higher than it should be. Even though everything was amazing, it is still higher than even other high end omakase places. I am glad to have experienced this once, but likely won't be back due to the high price ($275 per person). Again, the quality is top tier - but even other Michelin Star sushi restaurants are not this high in price. It is simply too steep for me personally.

Was invited to dine at ginos by a friend. He heard of this place through social media. We came for the first seating. Really enjoyed the unique omakase. Enjoyed the otsumami, including blue shrimp. Excellent fish selection. Really like the nodoguro and chiba ji kin medai. Would come back again!

Omakase by Gino (OmG) is an omakase spot located in downtown Santa Ana. The namesake of the restaurant is named after Gino Choi, a chef born in Korea but who tirelessly studied Japanese cuisine before perfecting his craft. OmG has been recognized by the Michelin Guide. We came here to celebrate a special occasion and made a reservation ahead of time. There is paid street parking as well as some parking structures nearby. When we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by Gino who was behind the counter. The inside was a casual vibe; all 10 seats in the small shop face the chef so you can follow his every move as he prepares each course. Overall the dinner took 2 hours and encompassed 18 courses. All of the dishes were great but the most memorable ones for me were the sweet pear with salmon roe, scallop with caviar, uni pasta with truffle, maguro blue fin tuna, and otoro. Gino explained every course detailing where the inspirations and the ingredients came from; the locations ranged from Northern California to Spain to Hokkaido, Japan. Gino's movements were very intentional when cutting into the fish and was precise with every slice. His techniques when making the nigiri showed he has mastered his craft doing the same movements countless times. The meal was definitely a high price to pay ($300/person before taxes and other fees) but was a memorable meal for a special occasion.

Dare I say this omakase experience beats the one I had in Japan?! I've only heard amazing things about this spot and finally got a reservation (which books up fast). There's ten seats at a time and it was a 17-18 course meal which was nothing short of amazing. Each course was presented so well, thoughtfully prepared, and very high quality because it all tasted so fresh and clean. Some of our faves were the otoro which melted in our mouths, the striped jack which had a firm yet sweet flavor, and the uni and uni pasta with truffle were delicate yet packed with so much flavor. The panna cotta at the end was also literally perfect! What made this experience even more special was Chef Gino himself! He took the time to talk with us, sharing stories about his travels and his journey as a chef. He explained how some ingredients had been prepared weeks or even months in advance which just speaks to his dedication and craftsmanship. We also loved and appreciated the hospitality, the attention to detail and how the experience was pretty intimate! The pacing was just right and we never felt rushed and yet we were constantly wowed with each new course. By the end, we left completely satisfied and full! I highly recommend trying this omakase spot for a special occasion because it was one of the best meals we've ever had!

I've been to Omakase by Gino five times now, and every single visit feels just as special as the first. My wife and I love bringing other couples here to share what truly is a one-of-a-kind dining experience, it's simply too good to gatekeep. Gino's attention to detail, creativity, and passion shine through in every course. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the pacing of the meal is perfect, and the progression of flavors feels like a story being told through sushi. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, and Gino himself makes you feel like you're part of something personal and authentic. Every bite is memorable, every visit leaves us in awe, and every guest we bring walks away saying the same thing: this is one of the best omakase experiences in Southern California. If you can get a reservation, don't hesitate, this is a spot worth experiencing again and again.

The sushi is fresh, and the environment is good for a birthday or anniversary. It's worth paying the $300 each person.

Charming and quaint dining experience!!! L-shaped dining area, which makes dinner cozy and intimate; allows you to chat with patrons and the chef at the same time. Food was so amazing. A lot of imported fish from Japan, and prepared to perfection. One last thing: beer on tap. Done.

This is the most perfect dining experience I have ever had!!! I loved every single dish, some more than others! Gino's service was excellent! He was warm, accommodating and put on a great chef show! I loved the ambiance. Nothing extravagant but feels like you are in an authentic Japanese spot in Tokyo! Make sure to make reservations a month before your desired date. Chef Gino opens reservations once a month and spots fill up fast. Make sure to follow Omakase by Gino on IG to get the latest updates and announcements

Gino is an artist. I've had many amazing sushi meals and I can't help but think this is the best one I've had. It's a delicious meal that's crafted and presented beautifully. It's very apparent that Gino pays attention to the details, as he sources the freshest in-season ingredients. He also not only had delicious versions of fish I've eaten before, but he also introduced me to fish I've never had. He takes you on a journey you will never forget.

My husband and I have been coming here many times now since Gino first opened his amazing restaurant 6 years ago. We come as often as we have childcare which is unfortunately only about 4 times a year. Omakase by Gino is not only my favorite restaurant in Orange County AND my favorite omakase restaurant AND my favorite sushi restaurant but it is also my favorite restaurant EVER! Like of all time! And I used to live in London and eat at a ton of Michelin starred restaurants but Omakase by Gino is my all time favorite! The reason is that he has a variety of signature dishes that we look forward to keep coming back to and he also is constantly innovating and adding new creative seasonal dishes. All of the fish (sourced directly from Japan!) and ingredients are top notch and delicious! We love it here and I can't wait for my next reservation next month for my birthday!

10/10! This place is so amazing!! I have been telling everyone they need to try it at least once! We went for my birthday and it's such an experience, nothing I have ever been to before. It's a small little bar with about 10 seats around so very intimate and chef Gino is making everything in front of you. He explains everything so well and why he pairs the food with certain things. The fish was so fresh and basically melts in your mouth. The menu is never the same, the chef uses what is in season at the moment and what he can get fresh from overseas. I couldn't recommend it more! Even though each course is a small taster by the end of it you're so full! Hoping we get to come back again in the near future!

Ask the Community - OmG Omakase by Gino

    Is there a dress code?

    Not really, people dressed casual.

Where do I make a reservation? And how far out do have to make it?

Resy. He schedules time when he takes reservations. Watch for it...

    Is it 21+?

No, I have seen young folks dining in as well.

Is it still hard to make reservation?

Yes,. I wanted to reserve for a Saturday, went to grab my card and it was out. I had to change to a Thursday.

Is this a Japanese run place?

    I believe Gino is korean

When do new reservation dates become available? All the feb dates only give me the option for "party of 1"

The second Sunday of each month at 10am. They usually post a couple days in advance via Instagram. Good luck!

Hi ! I have 4 reservations tomorrow night (530pm) and am only able to use 2 of the reservations. Is there a way to offer someone else the reservations or cancel two spots?

    Is this today?

In addition to the Omakase, can you order additional pieces?

No...it's a set menu and set price

Along with Omakase, can you order extra pieces if you wanted more?

No you cannot, but they give a lot of food so you won't really be needing extra pieces

Is there a waitlist option? How do I know if any seats open up?

There is no waitlist option. You need to follow the Instagram page. They will post when they are going to open up reservations on Yelp. 1 Sunday a month at 10:00am they open reservations and usually sell out within seconds/less than a minute. People…

I've been trying to get a reservation here for 2 the past few months. By the time I got on the Yelp page at 10am on a Sunday all the reservations are taken. Are there any tips people want to share on how to get a reservation here?

Set up notifications and keep refreshing the page 5 min before and after that 10am time. Good luck!

How many hours does the whole experience take?

    It was about 2.15hrs

Do you allow kids? If so are there any items that they can order al la carts for them?

I don't know if they officially have policy on kids, but this place is not really a kids friendly place. There's no menu list. Everyone gets the same food of whatever he's serving that day and pays the same price.

What day and time are reservations released?

Follow him on Instagram for release date. Seems to be 2nd Sunday of the month at 10am. There are also random openings when reservations are cancelled.

Can they accommodate for a gluten allergy?

Nope...he posted this on his most recent insta.

    How do you make reservations?

    Reservations only through Yelp

Do they have pairings to go with the courses?

He does not offer a pairing. You can bring your own ($30 corkage for 1st bottle and $50 for 2nd bottle and after). He also has sake, wine and beer on his menu.

Do you take reservations for a party of 10?

No...most you can make reservation for is 4 people

How much is the omokase per person and also how many courses?

There were over 13 individual bites/dishes passed. Approximately $150/person, plus any drinks, and taxes. Come hungry and leave beyond satisfied.

What's the best way to make a reservation?

By emailing. It can take upwards of 6 months or more once they are open again.

If you're going to charge premium prices for simple additions, customers deserve to be told beforehand. We've eaten at countless sushi restaurants over the years, and we've never been charged these kinds of fees for basic add-ons, especially without any warning. My favorites were definitely the toro and yellowtail, and the uni was sweet and delicious! One thing I really appreciated was the fish-to-rice ratio. The nigiri had a small amount of rice, so you could really enjoy the fish without feeling too full too quickly. The fresh rolls were also yummy, with a good amount of fish and nicely balanced seasoning. Overall, it's a great spot if you're looking for good AYCE sushi at a great price. The staff were also super kind and friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable! What we ordered: -Seaweed Salad -Yakitori -Nigiri (tuna, toro, salmon, salmon belly, sweet shrimp, scallop, yellowtail, albacore, uni, salmon egg) -Pepper Me Crazy (in: spicy tuna, cucumber, top: yellowtail, jalapeno, sauce: mustard, hot sauce) -Salmon In & Out (in: spicy salmon, cucumber, jalapeno, top: salmon, jalapeno, sauce: spicy mustard, hot sauce) -Kaboom (in: spicy tuna, cucumber, jalapenos, top: albacore, jalapenos, green onions, sauce: garlic ponzu, hot sauce) -Tuna & Salmon Temaki (hand rolls)

Unfortunately, the service really overshadowed the entire experience. I was seated before the couple next to me, yet they had already received their drinks, soup, and even some of their sushi before anyone came to my table. It made for a very rough start and honestly took away the excitement of trying a new place. I always enjoy supporting local restaurants and I'm happy to tip well when the service is great, so it was disappointing that this experience didn't live up to that. I will say one of the servers was very kind--it just seemed like she was overwhelmed and handling a lot at once. Also, the gentleman walking around the dining room came across as very unhappy and unapproachable. I don't know what he may have had going on that day, but in the hospitality industry, your attitude plays a big role in the customer's experience. A smile or friendly interaction can make a huge difference. Overall, I probably wouldn't return. Orange County has so many great sushi spots to choose from, and based on this experience, I'd rather explore somewhere else next time.
