Tried One North for the first time last night and enjoyed it. Their food is good (not spectacular, but a solid "good"), reasonably priced in good portions. Our waiter was super nice and was able to offer suggestions and answer my plethora of questions on the menu items (I'm veggie). The interior was inviting and cozy, and honestly, I didn't mind the Wacker construction view. I wasn't too keen on taking alleys to enter, but no stars off for that- not their fault, not permanent. read more

Came here several times for lunch. This place is usually pretty packed. Don't come here if you are looking for something quick. The last time I came here with another guest. (We made reservations while walking into the restaurant thank goodness). When greeted by the guest she said they were full, I told her we made a reservation one minute ago, then she agreed to give us a table. I ordered 3 tacos, and my colleague ordered a salad. We were hoping to be in and out in about an hour. Of course this couldn't happen since it took 10 minutes for the server to take our order, and 45 minutes for our food to come. I believe they have 4 different types of tacos? Or maybe 3? I got one of each, I remember one of them was just awful. It was deep fried, and dry. I have a love-hate relationship with this place. I love the location and the room. Whoever did the buildout/design really knew what they were doing. It's convenient to my office, and the *right* level of fanciness for a business lunch. Unfortunately, there the love stops and the hate begins. The food is really not very good. I try different things all the time because I can't seem to find a favorite on the menu, and even if it sounds like it should be good, the preparation is so indifferent that they fall on their faces. And the service. Oh, the service. I've come to the conclusion that the waitstaff are all in on some kind of modern era candid camera episode that I don't know about, because there's really no other way to account for some of the behavior. But, all of that aside, I keep going because of the first point. Hopefully someone at One North will read this and other comments and make it better. read more

Yes, the place is a little fancy, but you'll be fine as long as you're not in a t-shirt. I went for lunch with two friends with a Groupon. We were seated promptly, in a fine area, had a great waiter. Service was very fast and the food was delicious. I had the pesto with corn cut right from the cob and my friends had the lobster panini. They both really liked it but thought it was a little messy. We had the carrot cake for dessert which could use more of the honey sauce, it was good.... I would go back. read more

... Meh. Came here for lunch due to its proximity to Crumbs Bake Shop. Honestly, while I can see the appeal (it looks classy and has "high class" lunch and dinner items), it pales in comparison to most other lunch spots. Not only was the wait quite long considering the amount of open tables, but the food itself was just so-so. I had a wagyu beef burger which was packed so poorly it was falling apart. If you want to have a nice business lunch, I suppose this would be an ok place to take clients... But overall there are many, many better places in the Loop with similar items. read more

This is another place close to where I work and have lunched there quite a few times I went here before I went to the Primebar, which is very close by and another good alternative. Both are very good, with one north being a larger and more noisy locale Menu is very deep with plenty to choose from - I had a large salad most recently and was not disappointed If i had to choose, I would say Primebar gets the edge with a quieter place and bit better (more imaginative) menu. Prime bar also gets the nod if you are looking for a bar hang out read more

Fish tacos was bland, service was slow. Lemon martini was delish but it didn't make up for the slow service or rude waitress.

Ambiance is fine...food was so-so. Hummus was good. My friend got a side of mash potatoes (they were real and had skins) - I had mash potatoes with my entree and they were fake - makes no sense. I usually go here for drinks after work, and if that's what you're going for, it's okay. But if you're going for dinner, like right before you go to the opera, go somewhere else! Service was TERRIBLE. We had reservations and were seated right away. But it took the waiter almost 15 minutes to identify himself. Mind you, we're on an opera schedule and I told them this when I made the reservation... the place didn't even look that busy!... so this waiting was completely unacceptable. I was really disappointed with the food. I had the fish special (tilapia) which was unimaginative and bland. Hubby had steak, which was better but still not great. To top it off, they forgot my order of asparagus. I had already started eating and didn't want to wait longer so I told them to forget about it. The waiter then gave us a free shot (served in a chocolate shot glass) to make up for it - but I then noticed that everyone else in the whole freakin' place got those free little shots too! So either everyone else got their order screwed up too, or he just messed with me. They have a good wine selection and I work nearby, so I'll probably be back for drinks, but not dinner. read more

The place is nice, upscale atmosphere, lots of seating, and some of the quickest service I've seen yet. I was just placing my fork down on the plate from my last bite, and there was someone there asking to take my plate away. I ordered, and in less than 10 minutes I had my food, which also leads me to believe that they had most of the plate built in the back already. My waitress (Cheryl on my receipt) was very nice and very attentive, swinging by every few minutes while making her rounds, giving me the opportunity to stop her if I needed her, but not stopping every time to ask if I needed anything. It's a good technique that I wish others would adopt at other places I've been to. The greeters were pleasant, and I was seated quickly, and said goodbye to upon leaving, and my water never made it past the half-full mark. It was very loud in there. The "bar seating" area is all open, so when it's full, I can't imagine trying to talk to someone sitting just across the table from you. I was seated in the "bar area" though, so maybe there's other more dinner oriented seating elsewhere that I didn't notice. It wasn't really "bar seating" like you would think though, it was a whole restaurant seating area, with a bar at 1 end. I ordered the pasta bolognese, and they added some greens to the dish that changed the overall flavor from what I've had at other places before, most places make that dish very 1 dimensional... it could have used more sauce though. It was also a little pricier than other places too, which I've come to expect from being downtown, but most places it's a $13 - $14 dish, and I've seen it as high as $16, but never $18. They had a lot of interesting things on the menu (including something that included "humbolt fog" as an ingredient) that I'd like to try out, like some of the tacos, or their list of flat breads from the small plates side of the menu. All in all, it was a little on the expensive side, and the pasta was a solid 7/10, but there was a lot on the menu that looked good, and I'll be back. read more

Only a couple blocks from my work make this a great business lunch spot. I find the service quick and friendly, and the food is pretty good. I've not had a bad meal here yet! I especially love the charred brussel sprouts! I don't know how much they accommodate walk ins but I never have a problem making a reservation the day of. read more

Adequate, but not spectacular place for Lunch. On the plus side, the food comes in record time... we easily could get in and out in 30 minutes if we order right away. The other diner ordered the Cheddar Burger and reported it to be delicious. I ordered the Turkey club on a Pretzel roll and it was OK, but was hoping the turkey was more like turkey meat and less like lunch deli meat. Small pet peave, I substituted the Crispy Brussel Sprouts (much better than the Turkey sandwich) for the Fries.. while a good choice, it would have been nice if the server mentioned that there would be an upgrade charge. Not that I was surprised and would have paid it, but why not tell me ahead of time? Biggest issue was that the ventilation in the kitchen seems to be horrible. You could see a haze of smoke wafting across the dining area. So as a warning, will only eat outside on the patio in the future. My eyes were tearing .. I probably lost a few hours of my life by inhaling the smoke for 45 minutes or so we were there. read more

One North Kitchen does not deserve even one star, and really needs to work on its customer service skills!! Attempted to stop in prior to the opera, only to run into the rudest host, who actually went out of his way to make me feel unwelcome. When I asked about seating in the bar his response was "do you have reservations?", when I asked about happy hour he preceded to explain how "oh, it's only at the bar, right up at the bar, but there are no seats." And when I walked into the bar and asked the bartender about sitting at the open high top table, the host almost knocked my friend over in an attempt to get past her to put reserved signs on the tables that didn't currently have one. I honestly could not get out of this place fast enough and will never return! read more

We went here for a Friday Happy Hour with some colleagues. The drinks were really well made. I tried the old fashioned and the smoke and mirrors which were both delicious and interesting. We also had the smoked Gouda balls which were good but considering my obsession with cheese, they could have been better. My colleague had the flat bread which they seemed to really enjoy as there was nothing left. This place had great seating for a happy hour and a really nice ambiance. My only complaint is that it said happy hour specials from 3-8 on the menu and our server never mentioned them to us. When I asked what they were, she told us basically well drinks were 3 dollars cheaper than regular drinks. I would assume that would be true without any kind of special and there were no food happy hour specials. Overall great place but don't expect any deals. read more

Excellent food. Had the Risotto with Shrimp and it was soooo good! Wife had the Orzo and was also really good. Kids had stake slidders and burger also great. Variable me u for all. For started had jalapeño poppers and Hummus. Services was great and location in front of the Opera building an afternoon makes it even best. read more

Every single time I eat at One North I am surprised with the quality of food and service. I absolutely loved and devoured my plated to perfection pomegranate glazed salmon. The combination of pomegranate glazed salmon, roasted cauliflower mash, sugar snap peas, shaved asparagus salad and oranges is spot on, delightful and very refreshing. Absolute heaven! Sometimes I like to step my Loop lunching options up a notch and go somewhere other than Potbelly and Alonti Café, especially when I have something amazing to celebrate like the pending nuptials of one of my nearest and dearest. She suggested One North Kitchen. I said it's her engagement lunch and we can go wherever her little heart desires. If you don't have a reservation (highly recommended), get there by 11:30. The place was deserted when my gal pal and I showed up at 11:35 and the hostess kind of hemmed and hawed about whether or not she could seat us without a ressie. We did get seated right away, but in the future, I'd totes nail down guaranteed seating before arrival. I really liked the lunch menu at One North Kitchen. It's kind of the perfect mix of salads, sandwiches and some entrées. The words Lobster BLT in the sandwich section were music to my ears. How could I possibly pass up two of my favorite food groups: lobster and bacon? Turns out I couldn't. So I ordered it. Damn. Double damn. Triple damn. It's probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. 1. It's huge. I could only take down half. 2. It's brimming with deliciousness. We're talking lobster meat, aioli, bib lettuce and juicy tomatoes topped with super crispy bacon all nestled between pillowy sourdough bread. These are top notch ingredients. 3. It comes with awesome fries. AWESOME fries. I'm talking crispy on the outside and super tender and potato-y in the middle. Sure, the price point is a touch high (my sandwich was $14), but not outrageous. If I have one gripe, it's that the diet Coke was weak. It had that "came from a bartending gun" flat taste. Boo. A nice, bubbly DC would have been such an amazing accompaniment to the lobster BLT, but I suppose we can't win em all, eh? read more

Taken here for lunch the second day of my new job. We sat on the patio, it was great on such a nice day. I am a picky pescatarian, and was thrilled that they had so many things for me to choose from. The flatbread was interesting, but the butter needed to be a little firmer (it fell off the knife all over my place). I had the shrimp po'boy (rule #1: don't order a po'boy at a business lunch. too messy. I now have to redeem myself and show them I really do have table manners!). Drinks are waaaaaay overpriced and not that great. The food was bland. The only good thing we ate was the Chicken Verde Flatbread. It was DELICIOUS!!! The sheshito peppers are flavorless and only come as an order of 3 (for like $12 or something insane!). The chicken caesar salad was one of the worst I've ever had...so bad in fact, I sent it back, which I NEVER do!! They were really sweet and kept offering to replace it with someone else, but I was done at that point. They didn't charge me for it, which was nice. (Note: if you order it anyway, it's served with whole anchovies, a very bland dressing, and if you add chicken breast, it's literally a BLAND and PLAIN chicken breast served off to the side.) They had a special dessert that night - donut holes with a chocolate peanut butter sauce or something. The donut holes were ice cold and the sauce was semi-warm. Every Big 4/accounting/consulting firm has their own in-building business lunch and happy hour option, and they're all practically indistinguishable: One North, Pazzo's, Primebar, South Branch, Townhouse, etc. There have been times where I've been in one place for a solid hour thinking I was in another one. But One North is in MY firm's building, so obviously it is the best. Okay, but that's not enough to take it from 3 stars to 4. Here's the reasons: 1. New ownership took over a few months ago which has allowed the bartenders more creativity with drinks. Look, there's a version of a French 76 with thyme in it, so I'm happy. 2. The "charred" brussel sprouts. Yes, they're charred. No, that's not what makes them so delicious. Those suckers are deep fried! And amazing. 3. The salmon nicoise salad is legit. I crave it. Perhaps it too is secretly deep fried, or perhaps it is magic. Unfortunately, it is $18. Magic is expensive, and so is One North. Expense that shit! read more

I really should have read the reviews before going and made a reservation because this place got packed at noon on a Tuesday. Thankfully, by chance, my friend and I went to an early lunch so got a seat right away at the bar. Our waitress was great, and so friendly and attentive. They may have one of the best chopped salads - I'm still thinking about it, and I must go back soon to get it again! My friend got the turkey burger and said it was just alright. We also split a side of mac & cheese (mmm...I love mac & cheese) but I also thought this was just alright. Just not much flavor, and I know my mac & cheese. Everything on the menu sounded good, but after reading the reviews, it sounds like salads are the way to go. Glad I made the right choice. read more

Such a great restaurant. We came to see a show at the civic opera house and it's right across the street. But because of some reviews we tried 3 other places first- and left them all! Then we tried this place, which person at opera house recommended, and loved it. Casual/nice bar and restaurant. Wait staff are friendly and come to check often. Wide American food selection. I got kale salad and BBQ pulled chicken- both delicious! When we entered they asked if we were here for a show at the opera house and made sure our food came out quick so we were not late. I didn't know of this lunch spot before, but my girlfriend works in the same building (the UBS building) and suggested it. She also knew to make reservations, so that was handy. We both had the chopped salad, which was fine. The service was really good, and our food was out fast (I know - just salads, but you'd be surprised how long some places make you wait just for a salad). We've been here several times for pre-opera dining, and I think we may take a break from One North. Dinner this past weekend was rather disappointing. I wish there were more options for dinner within walking distance of the Lyric Opera. Rivers is great, and we will probably just stick there from now on. (Sometimes when we're short on time, we eat McDonald's before the opera, which I find hilarious). Anyways, back to One North. Atmosphere is lovely, with lots of mahogany and classy vibes. The bar is always hopping during weekday cocktail hour. Service has always been just fine. My gripe is with the food. I've had a few good dishes here -- the porkchop with sweet potatoes is definitely one of the highlights., and most of the fish dishes and salads have been lovely. This past weekend I ordered the bluefin tuna, which was accompanied by an eggplant caponata and polenta. When the dish came, my first impression was...yikes. Plating was terrible, with a big glop of what looked like mayonnaise on the side of the plate. The tuna itself did not seem like exceptionally good quality, and it was overcooked. The eggplant caponata on it's own had a great flavor, and the eggplant was perfectly cooked, but it just did not vibe with the tuna on top of it. I separated them and tried to pretend it was two different dishes. The mayonnaise glop was just gross and I tried to ignore it. The polenta was laughable -- two tiny little tasteless squares of it on the side of the plate. Not loving the bluefin tuna. Fiance's short ribs (yes, he ordered short ribs at two different restaurants two nights in a row) were nearly inedible -- all fat, drenched in some sort of sauce, and served with that tasteless polenta and spinach. Not good at all. Not sure why, but we ordered dessert, which may have been the saving grace of the meal. It was a chocolate and ricotta pudding that was quite yummy. We both enjoyed the white wines we ordered, and they have quite a nice wine list. I might return for a pre-opera drink, but from now on, we will stick to Rivers (or Mickey D's). I was quite sad to drop a hundred bucks on such a lackluster meal. Maybe it was an off-night, but I think this place may have gone down hill a bit in the past couple of years. Don't think I'll be willing to take that hundred dollar gamble again -- too many other great meals can be bought with that hondo! read more

The food is great, don't get me wrong, but this place is very, very full of itself. I can't count the number of times I have made reservations and then waited 10 or 15 minutes for my table. Everyone other than the wait staff, who I have the highest regards for, is rude. This was a favorite lunch place with a lot of people at my office but has lost favor due to better, more accomodating place (n9ne, Rivers, etc.). If you do manage to get in, their steak salad is excellent as are the gouda tater tots, can't get enough of those!! read more

Place is very close to where I work, good food, menu changes periodically. Great staff, especially bar. Very busy during opera season as its across the street from the Civic Opera House. Can't go wrong, somewhat pricey but its Chicago and its the Loop so enough said. Check it out, do a big fancy lunch crowd, dinners not too crowded but again, opera dictates this. read more

The best thing I can say about this place, is that if you're headed to the opera, the staff will be very vigilant about taking/placing your order on time and generally helping you keep track of the clock. The unfortunate thing is that the food is very, very bland. It feels like sitting down at a restaurant and eating airplane food. A so-called "fritto misto" appetizer was really just fried calamari a la Bennigans (it even came with what can only be described as Secret Sauce.) Caesar salad was half a head of iceberg lettuce, chopped and tossed with a totally nondescript creamy dressing. I would recommend that the Lyric crowd thoroughly research their pre-dining options. However, the bar was really nice, and if you just wanted a drink before the show, it had a good atmosphere and service. read more

I'd only been here before for a drink with friends and maybe a flatbread before heading to the airport. But since it was cold and raining, we thought we'd try One North for dinner. What a great surprise! The food was amazing! Food I had the lobster risotto which had a surprising amount of lobster! Delicious. My friends had the fish and chips, the surf & turf, and the scallops. Everyone loved their main dishes. And if you don't get the smoked Gouda puffs - you are missing out! Drinks The drinks were ok. My Dirty CEO martini sounded great, but was not served dirty. I had to send it back, and the replacement seemed watered down. One of my friends got the cucumber calienté - cucumber yes, calienté ... not so much. Another friend ordered the diseño Malbec and thought it was "ok." Ambience The place had a great look, but was very loud. It was a little difficult to have a conversation. The bar area is adjacent to the restaurant with no divider. But to be fair, there WAS a playoff game on TV. Service Service was - OK. Our server was pretty much indifferent to our being there.
