First time customer reviewing the curry chicken katsu: Long time resident to neighborhood (5+ years) but never stopped by to order at One Plus One Drive Inn. One reason was the large window advertising advertised this hole in the wall as a catering business, which sparked my interest about cheap, bountiful good food, but I was unsure if plate lunches was what One Plus One Drive Inn offered. Next to a liquor store with iron bars on its door and across from Long's, One Plus One doesn't have much of a hospitable air. However I do think they have tried to bring a spot of cheer in some glossy, colorful nature photographs on their orange walls. But still, with the office bright lights and the tired looking floor, One Plus One has a ways to go in decor. However no one comes to One Plus One to have an aesthetic experience. It's all about the heavy styrofoam package of food. What finally convinced me to give One Plus One a whirl was a word of mouth review about the portion sizes of the plate lunches here. In that area, One Plus One certainly does not disappoint. Check out my photo: a rare sight of triple decker chicken katsu! That chicken katsu isn't resting on a bed of cabbage or rice to help fill out the plate. And still, it cleared the sides! It cleared the sides! I was able to fill myself, my sister and then myself with this $9.50 plus $0.25 tax meal. If you're starving, this is the place to go. To the dish itself: I ordered the curry chicken katsu with default two scoops of rice and mac salad. Curry chicken katsu is my favorite dish at Zippy's. Chicken katsu is also what One Plus One advertises in its windows, or used to (do they still have that advertising?). I also looked at their catering options and saw it there. I figured if they cook it a lot, they must be good at it. And no surprise: they were. Curry: Somewhat disappointing. Instant curry taste with that familiar greenish hue, like the Golden Curry brand curry pods. Some taste of celery and carrot for slight lift. I liked the celery but there wasn't enough of it. Chicken katsu: The bomb! Crispy and light on the outside (not burned), and tender and moist on the inside. Fresh off the pan with a lot of steam to prove it. The light flaky crunchiness is almost delicate, and unique to One Plus One in my experience of chicken katsu so far. Desperately needed katsu sauce though. Apparently you can ask for it? Did not know that. Condiment section on the table by the water includes tabasco sauce and soy sauce. Rice: Average good. Soft, short grain. Lots of moisture. Not dry. Mac salad: Average good. Plain, missing crunch (onions, celery) and some seasoning (like black pepper). Mild in flavor, but decent: had a good balance between dairy flavor and vinegar flavor. On balance, the chicken katsu is the standout here, with the mac salad and rice being average, and the curry being somewhat below average. I think I would prefer just the katsu sauce next time, and probably switch out a scoop of rice for some salad. Missing vegetables (even onions) overall. I know I talked stink about the cabbage in other plate lunches but I did miss it here. Would recommend chicken katsu, not a fan of the curry, but other long time customers like it, it seems. The food is good here. It's very tasty and flavorful. The customer service lacks the attention to customer satisfaction. I asked the lady who took my order for another plate for my wife who was dining in the restaurant with me. She responded to use the container lid as a plate. This was not a very customer friendly answer. Also the parking lot is on a corner so the parking is atrocious. If it wasn't for the good food I would have only given one star. read more

This place is located off of King Street near Longs. The parking lot is very small and it shares parking with a small shop. Mini plates run around $7 and regular plates are around $9. I really enjoy their garlic eggplant chicken plate as it is loaded with taste. The workers aren't always the friendliest but he food is awesome and the portions are pretty good. Located on King St. Shared parking with Gourmets Liquors Store. Service & Food is always consistent. I love it and it's HUGE portions for the fraction of the cost of other places. Plus i really love the mac salad. It's my favorite. I've written a more in depth review but i'm updating it to say i love the christmas lights and the beautiful paintings on the window. My family and I have been coming here for YEARS! Literally since I was just a kid. In my opinion this place is way better then L&L if your craving a plate lunch. You can get a two choice plate lunch for $10, and they ain't joking when it comes to food, they pack it! The plates are super heavy! I always get the same thing because it's delicious, lemon chicken with mochiko chicken and all fries. YUM. My kids like the mochiko and orange chicken. We also order the garlic chicken and other stuff too. But my family really seems to love the mochiko chicken more then the other stuff lol. The parking lot can get kind of crazy sometimes. And it's a really small lot, if I'm not mistaken there's about 4 parking stalls? They share it with the little liquor store right next door. I actually feel horrible, but I am giving them a perfect score and consider this place probably in my top 5 local food styrofoam take out joints. It has everything one needs for a whole in the wall - -the crappiest parking shared by a liquor store. -the monotone cashier's and grouchy yelling cooks yelling in Chinese at each other. -the awesome orange cooler with complimentary water. -a Budda and insence visible blessing the joint. Used to like the food here a lot. Been going here since they were on kapahulu. Really like their Mongolian beef still they stopped making it. Living nearby on University Avenue my cousin brought me here lunchtime that served tasty meals.The menu offered Chinese and local meals like oriental chicken salad,house noodles,spring rolls, garlic pork chops,hamburger steak,teri beef ,mochiko chicken,chicken katsu curry, fried noodles. I ordered the roast pork with gravy plate that came with two scoops rice and macaroni salad,who knew that Chinese cooks could make ono mac salad!Cousin had the spicy garlic eggplant with chicken. The table had the hot sauce with the rooster head(also called by local as cock sauce) and Asian sweet chili sauce. They also have party pans with preselected choices that can feed 10-20 people or up to 60 plus people. On my next visit I will order the mixed kal-bi with garlic shrimp plate or the steak with garlic shrimp or the lau lau plate.Chinese cooks can also make killer lau lau. Parking is shared with a Korean liquor store so if you live nearby or get off the bus stop that's close close by you will be all good. read more

I like the Garlic Chicken Plate here as well as the bbq mixed plate the only thing I would need to comment on is the mac salad which in my opinion has too much mayo in it other than that the food is great like any other plate lunch establishment. Food is typical local style plate lunches. Parking can be limited maybe 5-7cars could park other that you'll need to find street parking or possibly across the street at Long's. For the food we got the Garlic Pork Chops and Hamburger Steak. All plates come with the standard rice, mac salad and your entree of choosing. My rice was ok little on the dry side with some bits crunchy (been sitting for a while in the rice cooker). Mac salad was very plain and bland. Just macaroni and mayonnaise nothing else. I would skip it and get more rice or something instead. Entree, my pork chops were just plain salt pepper fried on the hot top with garlic. It was ok had flavor and tasted the garlic here and there. Was thinking it was either going to be korean style deep fried with a soy garlic sauce or battered deep fried with lots of garlic on top but wasnt. You can also customize it by asking for green salad or brown rice/fried rice instead. Great cuz I'm feeling I want a loco moco with fried rice soon. Lol. I got mochiko chicken for my hungry cousin and he commented that it's good. My sister sampled it as well and said chicken was good too. Thanks for the description kids... I got the Hawaiian plate. It came with kalua pork and laulau. The lau lau was perfect. Large sized and moist. Good ratio of meat and leaf. The kalua pork was good, but it was cooked more Asian like. I could taste and I had bits of star anise in my pork and it was finely shredded. I still like it though! As for the mac salad, which is important on every plate, I liked 1+1's version. I didn't notice anything else besides macaroni but they seasoned it and had enough mayo to hold the shape. Also pricing was fair. They're slightly cheaper than L&L, portions were large and quality is good. Parking lot is very small, it looks as though 5 cars would fit and that's it. The food is solid but nothing special. The reason to come is for the bargain. You'd be hard pressed to find a better deal in town. The plates are cheap and humongous. The mix plate is like 5 lbs. Nestled next to gourmet liquors this place offers seating for dining in and a few seats for waiting for take out. The food here is not disappointing and the portions are what you would expect for the price. Good place for a solid plate lunch. Pros: $7 will get you a large entree, 2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad. Vegetables and brown rice available. If you wish to sit down and eat, you can do so at any of the 7 tables provided and on a warm summer day the A/C in this location will provide ample refuge. Cons: Location is dusty and the place does not look like a health inspector has stepped in the door in at least 6 months to a year. I am sure they clean the kitchen at some point during the night but I checked out the floor and dropped a book of matches behind the table closest to the door. Guess what? The book of matches are still there as of the writing of this review. Customer service is sorely lacking in this place. I suppose for $7 I should not have high expectations, but it bears repeating. Do not expected to be greeted when you walk through the door. You can stand for 5-8 min before anyone will acknowledge your presence. Overall-I live near this location so it is a place I go too often despite the poor customer service and the less then stellar cleaning. I have been coming here for a very long time and sorry to say that I have never posted any of the many food pictures that I bought from here in the past. Well I will posted at least one picture from here today. They are known for their garlic chicken, orange chicken and for many other foods that they offer from here. My coworker/friend has been buying food from here a lot! Because it's so close to the Diagnostic Laboratory Services at the Japanese Chamber of Commerce on South Beretania Street. Just a no-frills plate lunch place. While the service I experienced wasn't nearly as bad as other reviewers had, the food was definitely mediocre. Got a mochiko and garlic chicken combo, all rice. The price was reasonable, and you get a huge plate of food. The mochiko chicken was really bad. It didn't really have the usual flavoring. Instead it just tasted sweet and a little off. When I'm feeling really hungry or indulgent, there are a few places that I go to get the biggest meals for the best deals - One Plus One Drive Inn is one of them. Most plate lunches are $8-9, with a two-choice for $9.50. So far, I've tried a few of the menu options, and each one is pretty hefty. The two-choice is where you get the best value though, as they pack it so full that you have to rubberband the takeout container shut. My favorites so far are the orange and lemon chicken. The orange chicken is fried first then sauced, so it's always crispy on the outside. They use a lot of garlic, as you can always see minced pieces scattered throughout. Great for garlic lovers like me! The lemon chicken is a bit different from traditional chinese lemon chicken offerings - instead of batter-frying whole breast filets, they use breast chunks much like the orange chicken (maybe they use the same fry methods for both). This results in a mountain of battered nuggets that are perfect for dipping in the lemon sauce. The mac salad is nothing to write home about, which is why I sometimes opt to substitute fried rice for the white/mac sides. It's $2.50 more for the fried rice and $3.50 more for shrimp or teri chicken fried rice - all are quite excellent. They have vegetables, egg, green onion, and kamaboko throughout. I've also tried the spicy eggplant chicken and garlic chicken, both of which were alright. Not bad, but not notable either. I always get takeout because the interior is a bit grimey and warm. Not a place I would sit down, but definitely a rock solid to-go choice. read more

I yelped it and seen all the beautiful reviews minus one not sure their reason just said won't come back again. So today after I got off of work at 2pm I was starving thought I come check out the place. Nice small area and clean and bonus they got security outside their door. I said hi to the cashier and order my food and of course hard to hear each other because of the mask. Then he said my order going be a while. Yes I lose my patience at time but this jacka** wasn't too helpful and if you want people to come you need to be more welcoming especially during this pandemic. Especially the hamburger steak. Also had the shoyu pork ... also excellent. Pork had a char siu five spice flavor. Pork was nice and tender. The volume of food was huge.
