Sliced jalapeno sausage on hoagie with Düsseldorf mustard 6/2024
Sabrina S.

I couldn't pass this place up on our way out of Fredericksburg. The name called me in - "Opa" was what we called our Dutch grandpa growing up. When we walked in most of the glass display cases were empty. But, a very nice gentleman that worked there introduced himself and gave us a little tour of what the shop had to offer. Various cheese and packaged smoked meats ready to eat were in the refrigerated sections. Sampled 3 types of smoked sausage and various seasonings for crackers. Very tasty! Their sandwiches are very popular, so we ordered the jalapeno sliced smoked sausage on a hoagie with German mustard and no cheese. Omg that sandwich was super deelish! The sausage was very thinly sliced and the mustard was fab! So fab we bought some, apparently it's Fredericksburg Farms Düsseldorf mustard. Military discount offered FYI their smoked sausages can be conveniently bought in most HEBs

Opa's has been around for decades. Stopped in recently with some out of town guests. We had great cooked sausages to go and some excellent cured smoked beef. Excellent selection of other sausages and foods available. Service: nice, friendly folks Overall cleanliness: above average

Opal's has been here for many generations. My husband came here with his grandfather 30 years ago and we had to come. I wanted to see the memories of my husband childhood. What a lovely place and they have a nice selection of canned fruits and veggies. Got some whole fog preserves, these are difficult to find. The beef jerky looks amazing and we got some and it is super delicious, moist and flavorful and not too salty. The sausage in the rotisserie was amazing! We got it to go with hot dog bun, sauerkraut and German mustard. The sausage was out of this world delicious with a beautiful snap casing and perfect textures, taste, and I love that is what not too salty. I highly recommend it. Cleanliness: above average Employees: above average friendliness

Opa's roast beef sandwich to go

Custom-made sandwiches to go from a famous local sausage shop. It's not possible to eat on premises, but you can picnic at the city park about a block to the west - or better yet, at one of the many wineries in the area. Not feeling creative? Order a sandwich from their signature sandwich list. My favorite so far is the roast beef sandwich on marbled rye bread. Want something specific? Build your own using the bread and ingredients list. I usually just get the sandwich, but you can make it a combo for a few bucks more. Word of warning - when you see the word "sliced" it means thin-sliced, including the bratwurst. I was expecting sliced links but that's not the style at Opa's. Never had thin-sliced bratwurst before and don't plan to again, LOL.

Opa's Sausage is to Fredericksburg what Nathan's Hot Dogs is to New York - an institution of flavor and pride that reflects the culture of its community. Here you can find cheeses, sausages, deli meats, ham, turkey, and also you can come here for good old fashioned sandwiches. I hear they do some mean lunch combos. Today I came away with their jalapeño cheddar summer sausage, which is an easy win. The staff here is very friendly and eager to help, offering samples of meats and cheeses to help steer your decisions. And, my Yelpers, those decisions will never be bad ones.

My family have been a fan of Opas for a while now and thought it's about time we visit their store in Fredericksburg. It's a cute little shop full of different types of meat and sausages. Looked very clean and organized inside the store. When I first walked in, there was a lady who greeted us very nicely and gave us a quick description of all the products they had. She was very friendly to my nephew, who kept asking questions and samples (appreciated her patience with him). She definitely knew her stuff and introduced us to some new products they had (chicken sausage was one, and it was delicious). We bought a bunch of sausage, including a breadboard they had, spicy mustard and other things. Everyone was very kind to us, and the whole experience throughout was great. I even thought some of their stuff was cheaper compared to places we bought in San Antonio. Overall, I totally recommend folks to stop by and try out their products.

Opas is the best! Interacted with Customer Service recently and got a call from their President - amazing service. Now about their food products - we picked up their jalapeño cheddar sausage at HEB and it's the best!

Best sandwiches ever! We have to stop and get lunch at Opa's if we are in Fredericksburg. They have a full service deli with many amazing products; smoked meats and cheeses, pickled veges, and much more. You can order a lunch with a sandwich, chips, and cookie to go. They have specials or build your own. We have our favorite which is the honey wheat sourdough roll, with smoked turkey and cheese. The chicken salad is great also. The staff is super friendly. It's the perfect lunch to grab and head to winery for a picnic.

The sandwiches are to die for. My wife and I often drive 3 hours just to have a sandwich here. It is a MUST stop when in Fredericksburg.

They encourage more Formal which is refreshing in a town where most restaurants invite casual. We were on time for our reservation, but waited a few minutes in their small waiting area. The hostess/manager had a bit of a school principal attitude, but overall was pleasant. We were seated in a small room amongst several other tables, but still felt intimate. The lighting is a bit on the dark side, but the candles bring out a great atmosphere. A violinist and cello created a romantic feeling (Enchanted Rock Orchestra Strolling Duo). We started with cocktails, which were crafted beautifully. The menu has old classics as well as innovative ones. For the appetizers, we had the focaccia bread which was delicious as well as the stuffed mushrooms which were delicately made and quite tasty. The wine list is short but encompasses Old world and New World wines. My wife had a Bordeaux while I had a Tuscany blend. Both delicious. For our entrées, we shared the filet mignon with peppercorn sauce with candied brussels sprouts and hand whipped mashed potatoes as sides. The food was surprisingly delicious, well presented and portioned. We truly enjoyed our entrées. For dessert we had the bananas foster cheesecake. Unique, not too sweet, delicious ending. If you come to Fredericksburg, definitely try this restaurant. You will enjoy the experience, the ambience and most definitely the food.

Wagyu should taste highly flavorful! - Mashed potatoes were authentic, yet also bland and lacked flavor. - Great cocktails and wine options. - Very limited space inside. It's difficult to walk to the bar or bathroom without running into multiple people, so if you prefer spacious areas, lookup pics of this place first! - Charging around $20 per person to book a reservation (refunded at check-in) and being unable to change a reservation the day before, even when the restaurant still shows availability, is ridiculous. I've visited tiny islands where the locals truly depend on tourism for every dollar of their livelihood, so you can't tell me this restaurant needs to charge for reservations to survive. I've never experienced this anywhere as a frequent traveler! - I respect their strict NO ball caps policy, but it was odd that my husband and I had a large naked Marilyn Monroe portrait on the wall for our main view. That's not exactly classy either!

First course was crab lobster cakes. They looked over cooked but tasted pretty good. Next I had the French onion soup. It smelled of burnt cheese when they put it in front of me. But once I got passed that, the souo was good. Hubby enjoyed his cesar salad. I ordered surf and turf with risoto and broccolini. The bacon wrapped shrimp was also very charred and steak was very very salty. It was however cooked to order. If you like a lot of salt then you may like it. The risoto and broccolini were good. Hubbys rib eye was rare (mooing) just like he likes it. He enjoyed the seasonal vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes. Desert is made to order so it took about 30 minutes after order to get it. But it was worth it! The wild blueberry pie was the best part of the meal. It was a large handpie stuffed with these flavorful wild blueberries and ice cream on the side. We were full but managed to eat the whole thing! 8'oclock is when the music starts in the saloon. If you want a nice quiet romantic dinner then definitely go before 8. The music was very loud. In the saloon it was way too loud so we didn't stay for the band.
