I love sushi and sashimi and was delighted to come across Opus. Parking was initially hard, but we were able to park outside of the lot on the street. A wide range of options in the menu for both adventurous eaters and those who want to play it safe. My brother and I sat at the sushi bar and asked the chef to give us whatever he liked for an omakase style meal, and it was absolutely worth it! It's clear that the chef was passionate and skilled in what he did, and we could taste both the quality of the fish used and the preparation that went into it. Opus offers a great selection, with some cuts and varieties you don't come across too often. We started off with shirako (look it up!), and followed with sashimi and then sushi. We had a lot of bellies (yellowtail, amberjack, salmon, tuna bellies), and they were all decadent and delicious in their own ways. The uni was spot on, sweet and briny, along with everything else. We finished our meal with wagyu sushi that was lightly seared and salmon belly, full and satisfied. Of course, good food takes time, but our food was prepared excellently as well as efficiently. Prices were reasonable for the quality you get, and my brother and I both walked away with happy bellies. Glad to see good sushi in the SGV, we'll be back! read more

First-time visit. At first, we felt skeptical about this place because they only had 4 stars rating on Yelp. Based on this experience, both of us weren't disappointed. My wife couldn't eat raw fish so she ordered a beef udon. The portion was big enough for an adult. I tried the broth and it's delicious. The beef slices were cooked and they're surprisingly tender and flavorful. Sashimi and the raw fish inside the roll were fresh and yummy. We appreciated the complimentary miso soup. Their dishes did not only tasted good but also visually appealing to our eyes. I saw different beautiful Japanese sake bottles (not sure if it's all decoration or for sale) and I want to try them next time. Will be back to visit again soon! read more

Having come here two or three times, I think I can give a fair review of this place. A little background on my sushi history: I've had it all--from the best (in the Los Angeles area) to the worst (again, in the Los Angeles area). One thing that really detracts from an awesome sushi-eating experience for me is when I taste a little of the bone or fins in the sushi. Sadly, I experienced that here in my last try. While I think sushi should not take a really long time to prepare, it is essential to the sushi experience that the fish is prepared well. Finding miscellaneous items in my sushi that is not the fish meat means that the fish was poorly prepped. The taste of the sushi was OK, not quite the best or even very good. After going to this restaurant a few times, I have concluded that this place is really overpriced for the quality of the food and will likely not return anytime soon. read more

The lunch menu is worth going to this place. They have a set bowl with your selected fish. I ordered the Chirashi bowl so I could get a variety of fish, whereas my coworkers got the Tuna and Salmon bowl. For the Chirashi bowl they give you 3 slices of fish for each type. I love the sushi rice under the fish. They put a lot of the vinegar mix into the rice. I ate the whole thing. The fish was fresh and sweet. For the price under $20 for a bowl of fish, this is worth it. The restaurant is pretty big and they do not have many waiters. They can be slow on service so you have to be patient. You got to wave them down or walk over to get some attention. Parking is pretty bad in the plaza. They have other restaurants, so you might have a hard time looking or need to go to the street to find one. Came here with my boyfriend and his parents. They said that they have been dining with Ken for many years now and were excited about me trying the food. We had omakase, which I always enjoy and love to see what the chef will serve. This did not disappoint. We started off the ankimo- which is always my favorite way to start. Next was a salad with, I want to say seabass but I can't exactly remember. I don't quite remember the order of what came- I wish I took pictures because they were all so beautiful! Every single thing that came out was really meticulously put together, and Ken the chef was really nice. I really liked the experience, because I have been to places where the food is good but the chef is not nice at all. This was not the case- good food and good chef which makes the experience so much better. My favorite dishes were the seared wagyu nigiri, seared red snapper nigiri, ikura, uni oyster.. Ahh I like them all! Everything was really fresh. I would highly recommend this place. It is rare to find a place with good food And good service. read more

I have been to Opus many times and each time I am so satisfied because of the consistency and quality of the fish. I had the omakase and Ken, the chef, is always very creative while making the food in a very authentic and tasty way. I would highly recommend this to everyone in the area. Came here with my boyfriend and his friends for his 3rd part of his Birthday Dinner. Parking- Parking is a little tough to find because it shares a small lot with many stores. When we first walked into the restaurant there was only one table filled. The host was very friendly and seated us at the Sushi Bar. The Sushi Chefs were all friendly, Ken was the sushi chef who primarily served us. I can't remember each dish we had but everything tasted fresh and delicious. We ordered some Toro, Oyster with Uni and Salmon Roe, Live Raw Lobster, (Raw ?)Waygu Beef, Red Snapper (3 different parts of the Red Snapper), and Lobster Congee. Even though i was full from the first 4 dishes, I managed to atleast take a bite out of each dish before giving it to my boyfriend. By 7:30pm, the restaurant started filling up most of the customers were loyal customers because the Sushi Chef knew most of the people by name. Overall this place is great! I may have judged this restaurant prior to eating their sushi based on the fact that they are Chinese owned, yet I still wanted to give their food a fair chance. I am sadly unimpressed. A telling sign might've been that there were only around 3 parties on a Saturday evening.. We ordered the sashimi deluxe (comes with one miso soup and a bowl of rice), the Arcadia roll, and the uni chawan mushi. The sashimi deluxe was not worth it in my opinion. There may have been around roughly 10-12 pieces of fish, a scoop each of spicy tuna and spicy scallops, one sweet shrimp and one uni. They didn't even ask how we wanted the shrimp head to be prepared -- it came fried. The Arcadia roll (5 pieces) was shrimp tempura and spicy tuna-- nothing special there. The uni chawan mushi was recommended by a friend and the best way to describe it is a steamed egg (with mushroom and shrimp) and a piece of uni on top. It was okay, but took some getting used to. If you like steamed egg, I would say go for it, but if you're ordering it for the uni, I say go for the uni sushi or sashimi instead. Service was slow although it wasn't a busy night and parking in that lot can be a real pain! The fish quality was decent but I still wouldn't trust their omakase and would much rather take my business elsewhere. read more

I visited this place sometime 3 weeks ago and yesterday. This review is based off of both visits. Lately I've had a very difficult time finding a great sushi place in the 626. Too many places serve sub par quality fish. However, one night, gf and I were driving down Baldwin ave and noticed this place. We decided to try it and actually didn't expect much out of the place. To our surprise, the quality of all the food was superb! Everything was fresh and tasty. I didn't add any soy sauce to any of my orders. 1st visit: I ordered salmon sashimi, toro roll, lightly grilled wagyu beef (not sure exactly what this was called), and uni roll. Everything was on point. 2nd visit: I ordered take out on my second visit. I had 2 orders of salmon sushi roll, Arcadia Roll, Yakuza Roll, and uni pasta. Once again, excellent quality even though it was taken to-go. This is my new to go spot for sushi when in 626. It is some what pricey, but I guess you get what you pay for. read more

I came because of a a recommendation from a friend, who said the sashimi would melt in your mouth, and because my family came a number of times and raved about it as well. They both did tell me ahead of time that it was on the pricier side, so I came expecting that. My first impression was that the menu wasn't very large, but that's good for me since I'm often indecisive anyway! While there are some entrees and chicken teriyaki, I would say the menu is more sashimi/sushi focused. We checked in for the free salmon sashimi, and besides that we ordered salmon belly sashimi and yellowtail, cherrystone oysters, salmon collar, whitefish, and seafood chawanmushi (seafood egg soup), 1 tea and 1 cranberry juice. FIRST OFF, I have to say that the sashimi is truly as FRESH and DELICIOUS and HIGH QUALITY as it gets. Friend was right, sashimi melts in mouth. I didn't think there would be any difference between salmon and salmon belly sashimi, but the salmon belly's flavor is much more rich and flavorful, while the regular salmon sashimi is a bit softer to chew into. Both were enjoyable. I usually stay away from sashimi besides salmon and tuna, since the flavor may get a bit too "seng" (canto for oceany) for me. But my sister made me try the yellowtail and I have to admit that although it wasn't exactly my choice of sashimi, it was not seng at all, which is a huge bonus. The Cherrystone oysters were AMAZING, flavorful, juicy, and just great. As for the cooked items, the salmon collar was OKAY, I felt that it was a bit dry, but the whitefish was amazing. My sister and I literally picked off every last piece of meat on there. The flesh on the fish was juicy and tender. The chawanmushi was alright. There was seafood in it, so a bit of the "seng" flavor carried through into the cooked egg. The texture was nice and smooth though. For those items, the total came out to be $113 before tip and tax, which shocked me at first but then I remembered the warnings. OVERALL I would DEFINITELY come back for the sashimi (maybe even the whitefish), in fact this would be my PREFERRED joint for sashimi. Why the 5 stars? Because, salmon collar aside (which will probably be improved), everything they offered was TOP QUALITY (including the service!) and I believe money can and should be dealt out only for high quality things. If you're a sashimi/sushi person, this place is a MUST. Mom said she will be back to try omakase, and I wouldn't mind joining! I'll probably be dropping by often for the sashimi. It's a nice little hidden gem inside a busy Arcadia plaza filled with typical Chinese restaurants and shops. The prices are on par with other Japanese sushi restaurants but the portions here are pretty generous and the food is good. They also serve things a little differently, like the Spanish mackerel (Aji) which comes with a whole fish sliced up next to the fish pieces. After you finish the sashimi, they take what's left of the fish and fry it up so you can eat the bones and remnants like a fish flavored crunchy snack. The wasabi here is also different. It's got a little more richness to it than the typical horse radish paste served at the cheaper places. The way it crumbles into the soy sauce makes it almost look like the real thing... which it isn't, but still, it does taste better than most fake wasabi served elsewhere. I came here twice and while some things are not consistent such as the amaebi (sweet raw shrimp), the fish has always been impeccably fresh and delicious. I've had a few of the standards and favorites: Hamachi (yellowtail) - big fatty chunks of awesome, served on a bowl of crunch ice Spicy tuna roll - typical, nothing out of the ordinary, as expected Spicy salmon roll - this is flavorful and rich without some of the greasiness or slime that may accompany lesser salmon servings Oyster on a half shell - served with ponzu, roe, and green onions, addictive Chirashi - nice selections on a bed of rice, too filling for 1 person Amaebi - nice big raw shrimp with heads either fried or made into a soup Sausage - delicious with a dollop of spicy mustard Spanish mackerel - I love this fish, very tender with a subtle briny hint Prices are average and we always end up at around $50-60 per person and we have no complaints about how full we are. Parking in the plaza can be tough and don't expect to find much street side parking either. You have to get lucky or just circle around a few times. read more

Let me start with our total which was $110 for 2 people, we ordered the sashimi combo , uni, toro ,Philly roll and a large soporo. I personally did not think it was worth the price but my bf argues that it was very fresh and different. 3 stars due to the service, I wouldn't say it was the worst because she did bring everything that I've ask for, but it was just her looks!! The whole hour ever since I walked in to the restaurant, I have not seen her smile once! Maybe I was a little buzz but the more I looked at her the more I was unhappy which made my dining experience less enjoyable. The bf's parents are friends with the owners or something like that? So I went with his family to have sushi at Opus. We did omakase and got a whole bunch of goooood stuff thrown our way. Some memorables: - Kumamoto oysters: super fresh and slurpalicious - Monkfish liver: couldn't eat too much of this because of its richness. But it's pretty much like eating foie gras, smooth and delicious with the ponzu. - Toro: self explanatory I can't remember which specific types of sashimi/sushi we had, but I like most of them........ lol I wish I remember the names of the fish I didn't like, because I ran into some of those. UNI PASTA. We saw a party next to us doing omakase as well, and they all asked for the uni pasta. So naturally, we also got summa dat and boyyeeeeeee it was scrumptious. Creamy with the taste of sea. It's surprisingly not heavy, which was nice. It was definitely my favorite part of the night. Also enjoyed some sakes at dinner so my memory was a bit fuzzy wuzzy BUT I remember good food. Came here for dinner and the food was delicious. The place is bigger than it looks on the outside. Everyone is really nice and I was seated right away. What I liked is that they have menus on iPads so it's easy for you to figure out what you want since everything has a picture of it on the iPad. They have hand rolls and cut rolls for certain foods and it didn't take long for me to get my food. Everything tasted delicious and fresh! read more

Venue: This was one of those places that I've walked by a hundred times & never got curious because it looked so small & plain from the outside. (The only reason I ended up going here was because I saw the check-in deal.) We were totally surprised when we finally entered because it's so much bigger & nicer than we thought. The interior has a deep blue ocean feel to it & there's a nice view of the sushi bar. It was also dim lit, which I like. Service: Excellent. I don't usually have success when ordering my hot water + lemon, but these servers got it right every time & we never had to ask for refill. The first one I came here I liked it. I came today for the lunch special and I wasn't super impressed. My friend and I split a lot of the food so we could try the different taste. I had the beef udon which we thought was okay and could have made better at home. The tonkatsu was a bit over cooked and dry. The only thing I would really come to this place for is the sashimi and the hand rolls. My friend and I ordered the spicy salmon and albacore roll and those were really good. The lunch special is the best time to go and it's a way better price than dinner. Service wise it was moderate. The waitress asked what we wanted to drink and we said water and she didn't give it to us until we asked for it again. Another con about this place is the fact the plaza has very limited parking. You have to be sure you park in a parking spot that does not say five or thirty minute parking. read more

This place is new, it replaced the Liang's Village place. They redecorated the inside, and it looks pretty nice. It's not a Japanese-run place and they don't try to hide it. I had the yelp check-in deal and were given 3 pieces of salmon sashimi, pretty generous. I had the sashimi lunch, and it was pretty good. Nice amount of pieces. A viable sushi option in the area. We shared the deluxe chirashi plus side orders of a salmon skin and salmon hand roll. The deluxe chirashi had the usual combination of fish and the fish itself were very fresh and delicious. What I didn't really care for was the rice or the wasabi. The rice was a very nice portion but it didn't have enough of the vinegar taste that I prefer. In terms of wasabi, I wasn't expecting it freshly grated but it looked very unappealing. I can only give this place one star. It is nicely decorated and that's where it ends. The server didn't understand much English and wasn't particularly attentive. I ordered the Philadelphia roll which was really bad like there was no effort put into making it taste great. It had rice that didn't taste fresh, a chunk of cream cheese, salmon that wasn't pink and fresh, and nothing else!!! My favorites are when they add avocado or asparagus. The spicy tuna salad is the worst I've ever had! The greens seemed like they were wilted and rotting I couldn't even eat it. The eel avocado roll had bad old looking avocado same poor quality of produce as the salad. I will never come back as it was expensive. I've had better sushi from Ralph's!!! read more

We came here for lunch several times. It was one of my daughters' (7 yo and 4 yo) favorite places for Japanese food. They often do not eat well, but they have so far liked this place so much that they always eat a lot here. This perhaps doesn't say much about the quality of the wide variety of sushis here because my daughters "don't like raw fish" and only liked the California hand roll. This is the second time I have been to this restaurant. Both times the food has been fairly decent but the portions are small for the price. This time my wife and I had two of the specials. One was the oyster and the cherrystone clam - again pretty tasty but small portions. The other was the uni pasta. We had mentioned that it was not very uni tasting to the chef since we were sitting at the sushi bar and he seems a little offended. Well... He asked us how it was. Don't be offended if you ask for our opinion? The big negative here was the service. It was twenty minutes since we first asked for the check before we got it. I had to ask the waiter three different times and even the chef once. There were two other patrons in the whole restaurant. Two whole persons. Then they gave us the bill in a Discover Card check folder. So I assume they took the card. Nope. To save you another five minutes... Let me tell you they don't. And then they took another ten minutes at the credit card machine because supposedly it was a new machine. Then I didn't have time to wait for my receipt because they ran out of paper and were changing the paper roll. I didn't even want to find out how much LONGER time that would suck out of my life! My husband and I wanted to try this new sushi restaurant in Arcadia. We came in around 5:30 on Sunday for an early dinner. At first we were concerned about the pricing on the menu because everything seemed fairly expensive. In hopes that the food would justify the price, we decided to give it a try. We ordered the albacore California cut roll, spicy salmon cut roll, yellow-tail collar, and the uni pasta which was listed on the special chef's menu and was also recommended by our waitress. Albacore California Cut Roll: Small cuts (8 pieces). The albacore was very thinly sliced and didn't seem that fresh, but rather mushy. There wasn't much taste. Spicy Salmon Cut Roll: Small cuts (8 pieces). The quality of the salmon was average and lacked the spice we were expecting. Some places will ask you for your preferred spice level but not here. Maybe I could have requested it. Yellow-tail collar: Dish comes with salad, rice, and miso soup. No complaints on the quality of the fish but the taste wasn't there. I think they could have cooked it a little longer. Uni Pasta: Large plate but the portion was small. I was looking for a piece of uni but all we could find were small pieces of scallops and mushrooms, all covered in a creamy sauce. I asked the waitress where the uni was and she said it was blended in with the sauce. I thought it was rather misleading because when someone orders "Uni Pasta", they expect at least a few pieces of uni. This dish should have been called "Scallop Mushroom Pasta with UNI SAUCE". Halfway through eating the pasta we only found 1 VERY SMALL piece of uni which didn't even look fresh. Overall it was a tasty dish but if you are expecting actual pieces of uni, I would not recommend this dish. I'm giving this place two stars for the service and a clean atmosphere. read more

Hurricane roll - I'm not a big fan of this roll because I don't like spicy stuff. This roll is just a little too spicy for me. Sashimi combination - This place has great lunch specials. The price is fair while the sashimi is pretty fresh. Deluxe chirashi - I don't think this is worth it. It is somewhat similar to the lunch special chirashi but with a pretty big jump in price. If you like chirashi, I would just order the lunch special one. I used to come to this place a lot since I live pretty close to it, but not anymore since the service isn't that great... read more

Y'all beside the parking (difficult to find parking around dinner time) it is by far the best sushi spot. Though I do not eat the sashimi my family says it's always fresh and they love it. I came here with my family a couple weeks ago and enjoyed there Saturday Lunch Special. The staff was really friendly and the sushi chef (the owner) was really nice as well. They have pretty good deals for lunch which is great. I had their Chilean Sea Bass and it was really fresh. If you check-in on Yelp, you can also receive either Salmon sashimi or cooked Salmon. We tried their cooked salmon and was surprised by how big the portion was for a free item. The salmon was delicious as well. I believe their normal dinner items are on the pricey side but when you go for the Lunch Special, it's a pretty good deal! All the fish they use is really fresh which is great :) read more

Its amazing seeing other reviews base on this restaurant is not open on time or because its Chinese owned (where did racist came from? Most food inside any kitchen can be prepared by anyone and any race and still be tasty). Some even have reviews base on their "preferences" with other restaurants, without any proper communication done with restaurant (hello? Do you think people can read your mind or know where you have been to?) I have coming to Opus for many years. Ever since I moved, I still managed to come visit when I was around the area. Majority of time, the food wss fresh, delicious, and well prepared. However, since I'm a regular and sensitive to taste, I did encountered 2 times when the experiences was not all that great. Upon apporaching to the server, they always willing to fix it and make something else extra for me on the house. I honestly think reviwers need to be more rational. To ask a restaurant to be always perfect is impossible due to personal preferences and human mistakes. It is important to inform restaurant and see their corrective action. Opus is probably as good as it gets for sushi in the San Gabriel Valley. The head sushi chef Ken is friendly, works hard for his customers, and has trained w/ some of the best sushi chefs in the LA area. Personal disclaimer: I've only sat at the bar, I think rolls are a waste of stomach space/money, and I believe seafood is best consumed raw. #1 is the seafood and it's good here. Portions are sizeable relative to other sushi places in the area and the specials are interesting throughout (lobster, flying fish, giant clam sashimi among others). More difficult to keep fresh items such as oysters and uni are spot on here. Uni servings in particular are rather generous. There's been a trend for fusion style Japanese cuisine where raw fish is adorned with ponzu, house-special sauces, etc outside of the more traditional soy sauce and wasabi, and Opus continues this evolution in an understated, tasteful way. No pun intended. The cooked food is great as well. The wagyu beef is really nice, particularly in its seared sushi form. The uni pasta is interesting and fun, a good rich closer to the meal and good for sharing. The soups are solid; udon noodle texture is appropriately chewy and the broths aren't too light or too heavy. Yakitori selection is great (love chicken heart!) although the actual quality of the cooking falls short of yakitori-only specialty shops. The restaurant space itself is average. Takes nothing away nor contributes to the dining experience, but I guess that just lets the food stand out more. Service is prompt, have had no issues. Parking is difficult in the shared lot. Pricey? Definitely, but if you find cheap great raw seafood at a restaurant in the SGV, that would be far more worrisome or you have fantastic connections. My family and I have hopped around Japanese restaurants in the 626 for years and years, Saab since closed in Pasadena, Yoshida in San Marino, etc, but because of Ken and his food, we'll be settling in at Opus.
