Here's the thing. I want to like this place. The two owners were really nice. I've waited to write the review to give my thoughts time to settle. However, I still feel the same. I took my car in because the "brake" light was always on and my check engine light was on. I left it with them before work and they called me around lunchtime. Apparently my charcoal filter needed to be replaced (which was causing the check engine light) and also I needed new rear brakes (which was causing the brake light) as well as the serpentine belt. I agreed and he gave me a price, with a discount. I arrived and the owner gave me a hug. It was nice at the time, but I now wonder if I should have made sure that my wallet was still there. The bill ($1100) was more than he had quoted, but he told me that they had done more work free of charge, like fixing broken running lights. He was really so nice that I just got caught up and went along (my fault). When I drove away, I began to wonder why it was so incredibly expensive. The charcoal canister is from Toyota, so that was a huge hunk, but looking at the bill there were 7 or 8 hours of labor. Maybe that's how long it took, just seemed excessive. Anyways, the next morning on the drive to work, the check engine light was back on. That hefty of a bill for no results is really too much to handle. I dropped the car off and they agreed to look at it again. However, they couldn't find any problems. I drove away feeling like I had been swindled. To add insult to injury, the brake light came on again a few days later. I bought a new gas cap and that solved the check engine light. read more

I brought my car in here for an oil change and a look at my brakes. Oil change was fine. They changed the air filters as well which I desperately needed. It was done rather quick in 45 minutes or so. Then come the brakes. The guy brought me in the back to try and show me what I needed to do instead of just explaining it....gave me a little diagram and everything. Honestly, I didn't really care for that all that much. I bring my car to the shop to get the work I need done. I don't really care how brakes work or don't understand the difference between a disc, drum, rotor, or pad. So- he tried to "educate" me a bit by showing off his knowledge. Not very pleased and I felt like I was his student. Anyways, what he said I needed were new front and rear brakes, new tires, new struts, alignment. Gave me a quote for $1700 without the tires and alignment... So all said and done-$2200 or so. Didn't like them or trust this guy so I went for a second opinion. Second opinion said new front brakes, rear were fine but needed adjusting, struts were fine, needed tires and alignment. So got the work done there-$650 with the brakes and alignment but still need tires. So will be $1000 when all said and done. Basically this place tried to sell me stuff I didn't need....and they tried to push it on me HARD. Making snide comments like "you want your car to be able to stop, right". Didn't enjoy the sarcasm and pressure to buy so I said I would think about it and left...he didn't even want me to leave. Maybe they are hurting for business? Maybe I had a big "sucker" target on me? I do look a little young so maybe they were trying to take advantage of me and my ignorance of cars. I don't recommend going there. Two other shops disagreed with their recommendations as unnecessary services. They changed the oil and air filters fine but any mechanic can do that .., it's a car.., they aren't splitting an atom here exactly. I'm sure the mechanical work is good but the guy in the front was rude, sarcastic, condescending, pushy, trying to be a teacher, slow, and very unprofessional. On top of that, the waiting area is small and freezing. I really wanted to like this place. I've been looking for a good mechanic because I'm sick of getting ripped off at the dealership. The search continues... Not recommended and will not be returning. read more

I went to Ormsby because a friend highly recommended the place. She told me she had been going there for years and that the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I had recently purchased a used 2009 Camry and I wanted to make sure (again) that everything was running smoothly. I left my car there and they kindly drove me to the metro station. Later that day, I received a phone call and was told that my car definitely needed work, the sooner the better. Nate informed me that I had an engine leak and that it had ruined all four spark plugs and coils. Not to worry, though, they could fix it immediately for a little over $800 (slightly discounted from the $900 I was originally quoted). I asked them to hold off because I wanted a second opinion. I ended up taking my car to three (THREE) other mechanics and they all told me there was nothing wrong with my car. One even checked the car with me standing right there and showed me my perfectly clean and functional engine, spark plugs and coils. All three told me that Ormsby had blatantly lied. In short, don't let their nice image fool you. Take your car somewhere else and save your money. read more

Thanks to Will and the whole team at Ormsby Auto! I recently moved to MD from SC so I had to get a state inspection. I had my '06 Toyota Corolla done at another repair shop but the prices for repair were too expensive. Luckily I read the reviews of Ormsby Auto. I failed the inspection once again but Will took the time to explain to me in detail what all needed to be fixed and why. I was able to do some of the repairs myself and the rest the shop repaired. I compared their prices to some of the other shops in town and by far they are the most competitive as well as having great customer service. This place is great. The are honest and let me explain the situation. I brought a car for Maryland inspection to ANOTHER (Gilis Automotive) and after the inspection and they said I need a new boot replaced which came to be ~$480.00. I told them not to do the work and I took it to my mechanic and he said, nothing is wrong with it. He says Gilis is just trying to make some money off work that is not needed. He suggested to take it to another inspector. If the new location is honest, they will pass the car. I searched Yelp and found Ormsby. Not telling Ormsby what happen prior at the other inspection location, I dropped the car off. A few hours later, our car passed. So the the other location just wanted some quick money. I was trying to sell my car, and needed a quick and cheap repair. These guys had the opportunity to sell me on an inspection -- a service I would have gladly paid for -- but they explained that they did not because it would have cost me a *ton* of money during the my sale of my car (it's old and falling apart). That was extremely honest and it saved me $$. The actual service I got done on my car was fast and easy. Ormsby Auto is my go-to place for car work. Their customer service is par excellence! The moment you walk in, they make you feel welcome, so your car troubles immediately start to diminish. Whether it's routine maintenance or more elaborate fixes, their team does a great job. You can either drop-and-go, or wait for your work. If you wait, they have coffee, tea, and internet available, so you can work remotely or surf the web. When the work they are going to perform is more elaborate, they will explain it to you in high detail, possibly even showing you the proposed work while the vehicle is up on the lift. For those that are curious what's going on under and inside their car they will be quite happy with the attention to detail. read more

I've only gotten a state inspection done here, but I still feel they deserve a top rating. Will had jokes from the second I walked in. He was funny and inviting. Nate was friendly and very helpful when he had to tell me my tires failed inspection. He quoted me a very fair price for them to replace them, but also said since tires weren't really their "thing" I'd probably get a better deal at a tire shop. I appreciated the honesty. Since we moved to the DC area 6 years ago, we've trusted Ormsby with our car repairs. It is a relationship worth maintaining. Their work is outstanding, service is friendly, and they are always honest and up front. Our 2003 van w/ 68k miles had its engine and TCS lights come on this past weekend. AAA towed it from NW DC up to their garage because we'd much rather have them work on it than a place around here. It paid off. I have now brought two cars here for inspections. They are very accommodating and helpful. I did not realize that the NEW car we bought to bring to MD (from SC - since our old car would not pass the emissions testing here) would also not pass with its tinted windows. GOTTA LOVE MD! So ... they were very accommodating and gave me a loner car since it was going to take a few hours to remove the tinting. It actually took longer than expected, but they did not charge me extra. They are so friendly and nice ... I feel they have done a great job and not overpriced (actually it was the least expensive I could find). I would highly recommend anyone to come here. We had called three days prior and put ourselves 'in the books', called again 15 minutes prior to our arrival to confirm they had availability for an assessment and was told to come on over. Fifteen minutes later we arrive at the shop and were told there was too long of a queue and couldn't work on the car. Terrible customer service. They inspected my car for my MD state inspection, and looked into a few other areas of the car at my request for no extra charge. I recently relocated to Bethesda and began the arduous task of getting my vehicle registered in MD. Part of the registration process includes a passing safety inspection. Being new to the area, I could only rely on Yelp reviews and decided to go with this place. Not only is the safety inspection cheaper than other places ($60 vs. $70-$75), but the staff here is great. They're extremely detail-oriented and will help you out any way they can. I failed the inspection but quickly got the issues remedied and came back for re-inspection the next day. They were able to accommodate me and I walked out with an inspection certificate in under 45 mins. If I ever have any issues with my car, I am definitely going to these guys! read more

While the job was not very complicated, he was very honest and generous and the other guys at the shop were very welcoming and thorough in their roles. From basic inspection to giving you a ride back to work while they work on our car and pick you up, I can tell these truly guys love doing what they do and truly care about their customers' needs. I signed up just to post a review. I know a good bit about cars. But whenever I needed a bigger job done, I took it to Ormsby. The owner, Will, is great, Frank is super nice, Nate was great (but he left). The problem isn't the people; it's the scamminess. The first few times, Will would talk me out of expensive work and do the job for half what I was expecting. Completely had me sold that they were solid and helpful and good. My third time there, though, he tried to talk me into a $2000 job that I KNOW I can have done for ~$600. He haggled me about parts. I've talked him down on cost for a few things (which clearly shows that he is overpriced to begin with, if he's willing to drop the price $80 if you complain). Another time, Will convinced me my alternator was gone, a $500 job. In reality, I had a problem with my belt, a $20 job, and I overheard his mechanic saying as much. Will's face fell a mile, then jacked the price up to $250 for labor (which is BS, because it takes about 15 minutes to change a belt). I talked him down to $170, which is still over $100 overpaid. I wish I could say only good things about them, because they really seem kind (at first), but man alive do they play the scam game well. Never going there again. read more

I would not recommend this Auto Repair Shop to anyone. I had the Safety Inspection done initially and they failed it. They quoted a high price for spare parts replacement and I had to get it done from another shop. When I returned to them for re-inspection they failed me stating that no parts were replaced. Surprisingly when I got it inspected from another place it passed w/o any issues. Trap gullible customers and try to gouge out dollars from them. read more

Ormsby Auto has been my mechanic for a year now, helping my low-mileage '98 Buick to stay roadworthy. They have been an absolute pleasure to deal with -- I look forward to calling Will when it's oil change time! -- providing excellent workmanship and customer service. A lot of reviewers are complaining about "unnecessary repairs" and high bills. This has never been my experience with Ormsby! They are thorough, in both inspecting your car and repairing it. They've always been sensitive to the fact that pouring money into an old car is a tough decision, and have worked with me to find the least expensive approach to fixing the problem. The bottom line is, rather than downplaying the risk of not doing a repair to keep your business, Ormsby tells it straight and works hard to fix cars. Will's "bedside manner" makes the news easier to take, and you can trust the mechanics to do the job right. I would (and do) strongly recommend Ormsby to any car owner. read more

I have been going to Ormsby for the past 2 years. I unfortunately own one of the many Honda Accord Crosstour that have a bad engine. As much as I love my car, I have had to put more than $5,000 into my car in addition to routine maintenance. When I come to Ormsby, Will always gives me his honest professional opinion. Had I gone to another repair shop, I know my out of pocket expenses would have been a lot higher. I don't know why Ormsby Auto has a lot of good reviews. I feel like ormsby auto only targets certain people who seem innocent and easily tricked. I went with my mom, who doesn't speak English very well, and even though I'm 21 years old, I look like a 17 years old girl (according to a lot of people). I to get my car MD inspected, and Will said my car failed the inspection. I was given a quote that comes to almost $1000. It was a huge chunk of money, so we wanted more time to think about it. Thus, we took our car to a mechanic shop that we trusted more, hoping to get those parts fixed for a cheaper price, and come back for a reinspection. I took the inspection paper to that mechanic and the mechanic quoted me more than ormsby (however, I didn't let the mechanic check if my car really needed those parts that failed repaired). He told me that he could not quote me as low as the price that ormsby gave, and was wondering of how ormsby could quote the prices so low. We were skeptical about whether our car actually has any problems or not. So, we went to another place for a MD inspection. Turns out my car didn't need anything except for tag lights, which costed us only $4. My car passed the inspection with no major problems like what ormsby had said. This made me very mad because I should have trusted those reviews who gave this place a one star. I almost wasted a huge amount of money for something I didn't need. This place only lures people in because they charges the cheapest price for MD inspection, but don't be fooled by the price they advertise because every time you come in, they would make you pay at least a $1000. There was a guy waiting in the lobby with us that day, which I happened to hear that he was quoted with a $2000 repair for his car. I really feel bad for the guy now for what I found out about my car. He seems to be well off thou based on his appearance and maybe that's why he also became a bait. They seem to target cars that are very old too! (my car is 2004). Overall, my advise is don't trust ormsby, they're certainly not the most honest people out there. They WILL rip you off, but it seems as though they do pick who they'll target so, if you're lucky, you might not be the target. They may seem nice and all but don't be fooled! Will sarcastically joked to us, which really pissed off my mom, because he was not funny,and it sounded like he was looking down on us. We don't take jokes that indirectly insults us. Just by saying "just kidding" doesn't make it sound like a joke if he talks in that tone of voice. read more

Initially, I thought they did great; but it didn't take me very long to find out they are NOT as honest as they seem to be. They changed my rear breaks along with several other repairs but did not replace the sensors so in about 2 or 3 months the break service lights come on. I take my car back to them and I am told that I would have to get new front breaks pads and rotors. They said they would not just replace the brake pads as I might go back to them for squicky or screeching noise later. Asking for around $400 for the job. The gentleman always treated me very kindly and sympathized with my situation as I had just moved from another state and had no job and money. I needed my car to go to job hunting and find work. He gained my trust quickly, but my gut feeling told me to get a second opinion so, I find out that I did not need any new pads or rotors. An honest mechanic I was referred to took my tires out and showed me that my breaks can go for many more months! I showed the other repairs done by Ormsby Auto to the honest mechanic and those seemed questionable. Not good to take advantage of anyone's trust let alone one in my life/financial situation. read more

This is the worst rip off place to bring your car to. The manager Wil and Frank are only sweet talkers and there to tear your wallet apart. They advertise by cheap MD inspection fees but then come up with some or the other reasons to fail the inspection test. And then you either end up paying for repairs (which is again unnecessary) or you pay somewhere else for a new inspection. I ended up paying twice than what I was quoted for.
