Used to go to the Orwasher's bakery on the UES when I lived there so when this UWS location opened nearby I started patronizing it. After about 10 visits, I no longer do. Overall, the pastries and cookies are probably 4 stars but the service / line management are terrible. If I am getting a croissant shoved in a bag, why do I need to stand in line behind people ordering complex coffees and having their breakfast egg:meat combo sandwiches toasted? Then to add insult to injury, at checkout, the screen prompts me to tip a buck or something ridiculous on top of the cost of the croissant. Management should turn that option off. It is the choice of the store to activate the tip screen in square and other payment processors, and it is ridiculous when I buy my kid a bagel with nothing on it to take with us that they want an extra buck for handing it to me. There are too many other places on the UWS to buy food, including a slew of new bakeries that are comparable to Orwasher's. The other problem is that they mark the price of cookies by the 1/2 lb, in tiny print. It seems a bit silly. So where it says $11/ that is $11/1/2 lb but the 1/2 lb is written a lot smaller than the $11. Even my little kids know that foodstuffs are typically priced per pound or per dozen! Just own your prices and write $22/lb! We get it - rent is high, insurance is high, paying employees a living wage (oh wait, you are making them reliant on tips, scratch that) anyway.... 1. Make 2 lines - one for stuff that needs no prep, similar to how Shake Shack has a cold food line. 2. Remove the tip screen 3. Mark prices clearly And you will be a much better establishment. read more

I went to Orwashers with the family and got the following: ham and cheese croissant, turkey sandwich, chocolate covered donut, some type of sweet roll and ciabatta roll. Everything was really fresh, and tasted great! My only complaint was that the turkey sandwich was $12, a little steep for the amount of food, especially considering the ham and cheese croissant was $6.50. read more

I was a big fan of orwashers on the UES, so when I moved to the UWS and orwashers around the same time I moved, I was very happy. Im a big fan of everything I've tried here. My top choices: black and white cookies are good, you really can't go wrong with any of their breads, and I recently had a bagel here for the first time and it exceeded my expectations. The bagels are smaller, which I appreciate, and almost taste like a little sourdough roll with a hole poked in the middle. A welcome departure from the everyday big fluffy NYC bagel (although I will always love those bagels, sometimes you gotta switch it up). I got the New York breakfast which was their twist on a bagel with lox. SO GOOD. Perfect layer of salmon, cream cheese and all the fixings layered between an everything bagel. There is not a ton of space inside, so don't plan on hanging out for very long. During warmer months there is outdoor seating which is nice, but again it fills up pretty quickly. The baked good are tasty but overpriced, and the service is pretty bad, even when it's nearly empty. Also, at 7:45am on a Friday they had only two types of bagels for sale, neither of which appealed to me. The best black and white cookies! Completely different from the ones that we see stacked up in plastic wrap at the deli. The cookie part is more like a soft mini layer of cake, and the frosting, though sweet, is not just sweet -- the chocolate half is very chocolatey and the vanilla half is noticeably vanilla. We go to Orwashers for breakfast quite often. We love their iced coffees and matchas but their baked goods and breakfast sandwiches are great. Highlights are the sticky bun, the west coast bagel (or any bagel or breakfast sandwich for that matter), the plain/chocolate/almond croissants (super flaky with so many buttery crispy layers), the rainbow cookies and the black and white cookies as well. All loaves of bread are excellent choices if you want to take something home. Sometimes there is a wait, but it's a really good bakery so why wouldn't there be? Treat the staff well and they will treat you well too. read more

Orwashers is a good choice for a cup of coffee or espresso and, if you desire, a pastry or freshly baked cookie. I have been here a number of times recently during the afternoon and there is always a seat at one of the counters. It is open/airy and has a good vibe, it is a good choice for a mid-afternoon break. read more

Was here after going to the Natural History museum for a light lunch. The place was jammed and they messed up my order, but made up for it by giving me some free cookies. The bagels are quite small for how expensive they are. They are good just too small for the price. The menu inside is hard to find. I would recommend sitting outside since inside gets packed and only has stools. The counter staff gave us an attitude when we asked to put out orders on same check. I fell in love with the fine donuts from Orwashers on 78th street so when I saw another location here on the west side, I had to stop. OMG. Totally disappointed. I purchased 3 Linzner Heart Chocolate dipped cookies. WOW....expensive, but I love their products. Got the cookies home, made coffee for my friend and I. Sat down and had dessert. I'm sooooo disappointed. There is NO WAY these cookies were fresh. They advertised baked daily (this was a Saturday I made the purchase around 5:00 PM). The cookies were anything but tasty and the taste lacking. I'm so surprised - for the great name, quality and price usually afforded, these were terrible. I feel like I got ripped off. read more

Orwashers has several locations, the original being located on the East Side of Manhattan (it opened in 1916). The Upper West Side location is certainly very attractive, and has a nice selection of breads and pastries. I was a little disappointed coming here on 2 occasions because many of their breads were burned (not overcooked, but black on the outside). Also, they didn't have pumpernickel available when I stopped in the second time, which was also a letdown. It's still better than Zabar's. read more

Love their raspberry jelly chocolate covered donuts. I don't even normally go for jelly donuts, but their donuts are an exception. The jelly is not too sweet (it has a fresh jam like texture), so it goes well with the pillowy chocolate covered donut. read more

Wow, everything in Orwashers looks so very fresh and delicious! They have loafs, pastries, bagels, sandwiches, coffee, etc. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have more bagel options. They only had poppy seed and sesame, but I was looking for pumpernickel. However, my toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese was EXCELLENT! It tasted fresh, buttery, and full of flavor. While I hope they consider increasing their bagel selection, I'd gladly enjoy one of those sesame bagels again! read more

Following a visit to the American Museum of Natural History, we wandered into the bakery for a quick lunch. We planned to share a sandwich. There were a few choices, nothing fancy, but we just wanted a snack. There were a few locals stopping in that were ahead of us in line. They suggested the chocolate bread. So, tourists that we were, we ordered it. And WOW, it was great. Moist cake with chunks of melted chocolate inside; delic! Also ordered a jelly filled donut and a black and white; equally great! Seating outside for a group of 4 is pretty tight. The back of your chair bumps into the person behind you. So try not to select one of those tables. This is a great European-style bakery where everything is baked fresh on the premises daily, preservative-free, and you can really taste the difference vs. other places that just truck things over from wherever. This also means that, just like in the French countryside, the earlybird gets the freshest bread/pastries and the widest variety to choose from before things start to run out and get a little stale. While service can be hit or miss because they do seem to have a high turnover in counter staff, the quality of the baked goods is very high and they do have some unique offerings you will not see elsewhere. On the bread side, some of my favorites are the Challah (only available on Fridays), the whole wheat Focaccia, and the flat onion roll they call a "pletzel". On the sweet side, the French Toast, the danish with raisins (I forget what it's called), the pecan sticky bun, and the coconut macaroons (best in the city IMO) stand out. read more

deliciously, orwashers kiosk inside the gourmet garage store (west 66th st., manhattan) never fails with its breads and sweets. horrifically, the kiosk's owners don't seem to know about today's food insecurity and homeless shelters. because at 8 pm the other weekday, all its shelves were empty since it had closed. and, I was told, all leftovers had been thrown out! (a garbage cart was nearby, but I neglected to ask how many of the garbage bags were from orwashers.) why not donate leftovers, even at night, to a homeless shelter? why not give them to orwasher and store employees to take home? how about generously and non-wastefully giving them to store customers at check-out, since the store is open til 9 pm? read more

Hated this place. I ordered a latte & specifically asked for it to be made at warm or room temperature because I don't like coffee too hot. This is because most places burn almond & soy milks that have a lower burn temperature. After ordering my waitress said "do you want it hot?" I clarified "I want a regular coffee at room temperature or cool, NOT HOT please". Again she said "so you want it hot?" I repeated "No". Of course my coffee came out scalding hot. Worst coffee I've had in New York so far. I needed to add extra sugars to cover the bitter burnt taste. Usually I just grab it & go. In addition, it took 6 swipes for them to charge my card & the server declined my offer for cash to speed up the process. Never returning. read more

Too many plastic bags. Nobody wants to see their bagel in a plastic bag. If you ask for paper but even that has plastic parsley in it. Do you have to ask for specifically for a paper bag. Then they give you the paper back in the paper shopping bag on top of it. Please stop wasting stuff. read more

The almond croissant is THE BEST, I've never had better. My husband and I go here whenever we are in the area just for the croissants. The staff is friendly and the line moves quickly. Go for the breads and the croissants, the cookies don't hold up. read more

Pastries are amazing. Staff (UES location) are the worst. Always rude. Last time, the young guy behind the counter looked at me blankly as if he were stoned. The woman at the cash register has major attitude, unhappy with her job. Looked at me like I had 3 heads when I told her the guy hadn't taken my order. When I asked for a donut, she gave me eyes like they didn't sell those. Finally ordered a cookie and after I left the store I realize they gave me a chocolate croissant. It feels very unfortunate to write this review- however I ordered a dirty chai and it was undrinkable, it literally tasted like chemicals. I know that perhaps it was a pre-mixed liquid they used for the chai but really I have never experienced paying for something and not even being able to drink it, I had to throw it out. My friend ordered a regular coffee, however it wasn't hot, just warm... I gave this place 3 stars because in all fairness it is a bakery, I haven't tried any baked goods. read more

We were in the UWS looking for a cafe nearby and we came across Orwashers which had excellent reviews on Yelp and decided to try it out. It was mid afternoon on a Saturday and the place was very busy. Almost all the seats were gone. We waited in line and ended up ordering a cheese pizza to share, The New York Breakfast bagel (basically a bagel with smoked salmon, dill cream cheese, and onion), and a ham & gruyere sandwich. The pizza was very average. The bagel was not the dense, fresh, perfectly chewy NYC bagel that I expected from reviews- it tasted like the bagels you get from the grocery store at the end of the day. The smoked salmon portion was not as generous as I had hoped, so I was disappointed with the bagel overall. My boyfriend had the ham & gruyere which they offered to toast for him but never did. This was a little bit annoying, but we did not complain. He ended up being disappointed with the sandwich as well - and toasting it probably wouldn't have saved it anyway. Overall, wouldn't return from the food. Also, they could try a little bit harder and not serve food on paper plates- this was not what we were hoping for as customers eating in the restaurant & also wasteful. Staff was friendly. read more

I've only had the donuts here and they were fantastic. You get them filled up with jam of your choice which is fruity refreshing yummy and will have you licking your fingers!! The donut itself is fluffy, light and topped off with sugar it's just so enjoyable! It's 4.50 a donut if I remember correctly which sounds pricey but it's really worth it, and I'd suggest getting more than one!!
