I first discovered Osteria 832 on Uber eats and I've been obsessed with their rigatoni Bolognese ever since. I probably place an order here like twice a month!! Highly recommend that dish. I am giving the restaurant 3 stars because I was not impressed with the other food that I have tried. Chicken Marsala is my favorite Italian fish but when I ordered it here, it was just blah. Definitely edible, however I would never order it again and contemplated sending it back.. The spaghetti and meatballs was also pretty bland. It was alright but nothing to go out of your way to order. It just tasted like marinara sauce straight out the can. A staple in the neighborhood, Osteria 832 is the perfect, low-key patio spot in VA Highland. After visiting a few times for dinner and drinks years ago, we made a recent return to sample their new brunch. After being seated on their very comfortable patio, we settled in with drinks- a mimosa for her, and a tart and refreshing luxardo spritz for me. For our meals, I had the Italian omelette, stuffed with spinach, tomatoes, and vegetarian sausage, served alongside a zesty and fresh pomodoro sauce, and a serving of truly some of the tastiest fried breakfast potatoes around. While mine was delicious, her breakfast pizza was the star. Deliciously thin crust, topped with cream gravy, vegetarian sausage, potatoes, and scrambled eggs, it was a fun, throwback brunch dish that has already precipitated our return on a few occasions. Me girlfriend and I saw that Osteria had a low 3.5 star rating in Yelp and should've looked elsewhere. However, we were hungry and took a chance.. We ordered chicken parm and a bolonaise dish. The pasta didn't taste homemade (a basic expectation of any good Italian restaurant) and most importantly both dishes had VERY LITTLE SAUCE. Seriously, how can you serve a bolonaise meat sauce with no meat?! What chaps my ass is that I specifically asked for extra sauce. Ironically the food wasn't terrible but it was a extremely disappointing that we paid $50 for two pasta dishes with minimal sauce and a salad. If you want good Italian please look elsewhere. Had brunch on Saturday morning! I ordered the garden omelet and I appreciated the freshness of the vegys and the flavoring of the dish - perfect combination of flavor, veg, and cheese! My husband ordered the Italian omelet and also enjoyed it very much. Ordered a side pancake and it was delicious - especially with the fresh fruit compote! Decided to come here before leaving the city. This area of Atlanta is gorgeous! It appears to be a nice family area with beautiful homes and nice local restaurants. The place was not busy so we decided to try it. We were seated immediately and our hostess was also our waitress. The restaurant had a nice semi upper class bar feel. They don't have drink specials on sundays but they still had mimosas and bloody Mary's. I opted for the sangria( red), but it tasted watered down. I ordered another one but it was still underwhelming. For an appetizer we had the mussels that tasted extremely fresh and the fried okra and eggplant. Those were amazing and the marinara sauced tasted homemade. He order the shrimp and sausage pasta with squid ink and I had the Tuscan fettuccine. Both items were good and once again tasted fresh. The pastas were not drenched in sauce, so I loved it. The only two "complaints" i have is that the waitress didn't tell us the food specials and the sangria was underwhelming. Trattoria and ristorante refer to more formal restaurants. 832 is the restaurant's street number on Highland Ave. I visited for Sunday brunch and had a pleasant experience. Yes, this place has a brunch menu -- an Italian brunch menu. The weather was beautiful, so of course everyone chose to sit on the patio. There were still several customers seated indoors, but the inside felt empty compared to the outside. The restaurant's atmosphere is casual and laid back. It sort of reminds me of a Fellini's or La Fonda, but nicer. The inside has a bar and a mixture of booth and table seating. The patio is enclosed and decorated with trees and other plants for a bit of privacy from the street. The string lighting hanging from above is a nice touch. The place sort of has a bit of old school Italian charm to it. The brunch menu has both brunch/breakfast type foods as well as traditional Italian pizzas and pastas. I sampled a bit of both. Examples of brunch items include eggs in various forms (omelets, eggs Benedict), shrimp and grits, French toast, and breakfast pizza. Italian items include bruschetta, caprese salad, different types of spaghetti, and thin-crust pizzas. Expect to spend roughly $8-12 for most entrees. The brunch item I tried was the Highland Benedict ($9). This entree consisted of fried eggs, chicken sausage patties, and sausage gravy served over polenta cakes. The egg dishes come with a choice of fries or locally grown, stone-ground Parmigiano grits. I usually never turn down an option of grits and they were great. They were flavorful and succulent. An excellent bowl of grits. I didn't expect to find one at an Italian restaurant. Two chicken sausage patties were tucked in between a top layer of fried eggs and a bottom layer of polenta cakes. The stack was drenched in a creamy and savory sausage gravy with a bit of shredded Parmesan cheese on top. The dish was tasty and I savored every bite of the chicken sausage. The polenta cakes were soft and delicate, almost melting in my mouth. I tried one of the classic pasta dishes - Spaghetti & Meatballs ($10). This is an intrinsically simple dish with spaghetti noodles, meatballs, and a pomodoro (basic tomato) sauce, yet it can vary widely from restaurant to restaurant. I was surprised with Osteria 832's version because it was unexpectedly amazing. The meatballs were the best part. Four meatballs were served in the bowl and they were absolutely delicious. They were tender and packed with flavor. They seemed to be freshly made. The noodles were appetizing and the tomato sauce wasn't overpowering. Service was good. Despite a busy day, our plates came out quite fast. Our server was mostly efficient. Free street parking is available along any of the nearby residential neighborhood side streets. read more

Our party of 6 wanted brunch and we came here only b/c American Roadhouse next door had a 35-minute wait. I wouldn't have known Osteria 832 served brunch except for their "Sat-Sun 10-3pm Brunch" sign out front. I'd been to Osteria 832 many years ago, and I remember liking their pizza & pasta dishes. As for brunch, the food was ok and I'd recommend just coming here for their pizza & pasta. But the highlight of our dining experience was their service issues. First, it didn't look like there was any manager overseeing the operation ... which probably would've helped a lot. Second, I don't think there was any host or hostess either. I think the servers were functioning as both. Third, it took forever just to get our drinks - and look at my photo of the sorry cranberry juice. Yes, that's how the "full" glass arrived at our table - what a joke! And fourth, I think they forgot our food b/c we saw tables who arrived after us get their food before we did. When our food finally did arrive, we were still missing one person's meal which our server eventually admitted they forgot. What's sad is that the place wasn't crowded at all. VEGETALI BENEDICT ($8) Ordered this b/c it had the most interesting menu description, plus our server said it was her favorite. The dish had sauteed spinach, cremini mushrooms, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, & basil pesto on bruschetta bread. It was actually pretty good. My dish also came w/ locally grown Parmigiano grits which was just ok. And I never got my wheat toast. Actually no one at our table got their wheat toast which was supposed to come with our meals ... but that's no surprise. I tried my friend's French toast and home fries - they were ok. Osteria is located in a great part of town and has a great outdoor patio! I've been here several times for brunch and dinner, the service was always good and its a nice overall spot to hangout. The concept somewhat reminds me of Fellinis, simple and fun. The kitchen opens up to the restaurant which is a nice touch. The calamari appetizer we had was tasty, they mixed in fresh breaded/fried bazil leaves with the fresh calamari which was a good touch. I really wanted to like our pizzas (Lombardia and a custom veggie pizza) we ordered ... the ingredients were fresh but the flavor was only okay and it just didn't come together well. I would definitely return but rather for the atmosphere than food, which is not necessarily a bad thing! read more

This cute, little restaurant tucked away in Virginia Highlands is my new favorite Italian place. The food was fantastic and fresh, the staff kind and personable, and the experience one I'll never feel guilty paying a little extra for. My friend and I arrived around 6pm on a Thursday. We were able to find parking in the free lot behind and to the left of the restaurant. There's a short uphill walk to get to the front door, but nothing major. We were greeted immediately and sat right away. There's a variety of seating indoors (bar, tables, and booth), as well as outdoor tables. It was a nice evening, so we chose to sit outside. Our server, Michael, arrived promptly and took our drink orders. He was friendly and we both enjoyed talking with him. The menu is fairly simple, with a great variety of pizza and pasta. By the time our drinks came we were ready to order. We split an arugula salad (fresh arugula, Parmesan, and lemon) and fried calamari for appetizers and a margherita pizza for our meal. The entire bill came out to $26. The most important aspect of the experience was the food. I've never had fried calamari that tasted so light. I can't stand fried food that tastes fried. Frying something should enhance the flavor, not overpower it, and this calamari was a perfect example of how frying can be done right. There were also fried basil leaves thrown in, which tastes amazing in tomato sauce. The arugula salad was transformative and rocked my assumptions of what a "plain green salad" could be. I loved how simplicity brought out the natural flavors. The pizza, of course, was also great and the perfect amount for splitting. Couple just walks in and gets food within 5 mins.... Uhmmm fix it! Some things are just difficult to digest. Our reservation was for 7pm, we arrive a little early at 6:50 (not expecting to be seated right away) and immediately both the hosts are very stand off ish and one says "well you are 10 mins early (like I don't already know) but you can follow me this way" and proceeds to take us to our table. Like ok.... I was a host for YEARS and never did I think it was appropriate to say something like that to a customer. We would have been perfectly fine to wait the 10 minutes if it was that big of an issue. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat outside (our experience already tainted) and were told by the same host that "everyone is busy" like again.... Okay???[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After about 15 minutes we get greeted with just a "what can I get you to drink". Cool, fine, whatever at this point. I ordered a glass of water and a glass of the house white and my wife ordered just a water. After about 20 minutes our server comes out with just my wine, doesn't say anything and just leaves. Clearly our table doesn't have waters but no one seems to care. Finally I'm able to flag her down and ask for water since we had been there for over 30 minutes with my wife being drink less. One of my friends -- we haven't seen each other in *ages* -- suggested this place to meet for brunch, and so here we went. Having never been here before, it was a nice diversion to go. He'd said he liked this place compared with others because of relatively even experiences in food quality and service. So, yay! We'd gotten there at about 10:10, so brunch had essentially just started and there were scarcely any people there. We'd elected to have patio seats. The seating was conducive to conversation and not struggling to hear what the other was saying. Even though it was about 87°F/30°C out, the shade of the trees and the very light breeze made it comfortable to be out. Our server was Gaia ("Mother Earth!", I'd said instantaneously and she smiled, agreeing), a cute-as-a-button gem who'd taken care of us as best she could (including sharing some stories with us, which I always appreciate!). She'd began with our starter beverages. I'd ordered an orange juice (which I wasn't completely certain about, though it was nice; there was shaved ice in it, and so I'm wondering if the orange juice was initially frozen, then thawing, and then they'd shaken up the bottle, my leaning-to thought, or if they'd legitimately shaved ice into it, my giving-them-credit thought). My friend had a coffee. We'd followed that order with bloody maries, using their well vodka as a base. I've had not-so-pleasant experiences with them taste-wise, and Gaia ensured us they make the mix in-house (adding that they'd modified their formulae over time using customer feedback, including increasing the horseradish content; that's nice to hear, they listen to their customers!), and that it should be nice. It wasn't gangbusters terrific, partly because I'd forgotten that bloody maries include clam juice and I'd had that thought in my head while drinking it, and didn't convince me that it's a go-to drink (especially because of the clam juice), but it was okay. Not being a person who drinks them, I can't rate it beyond it was not an unpleasant experience. I did like the garnishments of two green pimentoed olives and a banana pepper. We'd finally made our orders, with Gaia giving us sufficient time to make selections. I'd gone with the breakfast sandwich (options of veggie sausage [I'd initially said I didn't want any of the options of bacon or sausage because I thought those were it until she told me, to my glee, they also had veggie sausage], cooked-hard eggs [y'all can keep your runny yolks, sorry], and fries). My friend, after asking for suggestions initially, went with the Benedict pizza, with an extra egg, and grits. He, like most of you, it seems, likes runny yolks. He'd also told her he had a barber's appointment at noon, and good-trooper Gaia gave time updates throughout the meal to remind him how much time he'd had left (even though, ultimately, I still had to remind him of the time when he was dragging his feet). Bless her, dearly! The food came out, Gaia remarking (added blessings to you!) that she'd cut my friend's pizza ever-so-carefully to avoid breaking the eggs. Isn't she conscientious?! People, my taste buds got a treat! The bread was somewhat sweet and so soft, the eggs were as firm as I like it and delicious, the cheese melted in nicely (mmmm... cheese...), and the veggie sausage patties, a new experience for me in terms of a sandwich like this one, complemented everything so well! I'd also added Tabasco and ketchup to the mix just because I loves me condiments in sandwiches. The homefries were the added kick, with a hint of salt, and just enough flavor that it didn't even need ketchup. It was intensely, gastronomically satisfying, and I'd felt full. We walked in on a Thursday night at 7 pm, and it was fairly busy. The server and host were both super nice and got us seated as quickly as possible. There was some wait, but understandable since it was prime dinner hour! There were 5 of us, and we sat in one of the booths, and it was a comfortable fit. We were there for VaHi restaurant week, so two in the group got the 3 course special. We started with toasted ravioli, which could be crisipier but were all in all very tasty! Then got a bread basket with plenty of bread and good olive oil. Others in the group got cesar salad and an arugula salad, which they said was tasty. For the mains, we got rigatoni bolognese (I thought the flavor was good, but could use some more sauce), the ravioli florentine (super saucy and yummy!), and a chicken pesto pizza (which was huge and crispy). For dessert we got chocolate torte (super dense compared to others I've had, but good chocolate flavor!), the chocolate layer cake (which was a decent cake), and the cheesecake with homemade strawberry compote (probably the favorite, especially with the compote). I adore Osteria 832! I've been a number of times (but not since I started Yelping) so this review is just based on my most recent experience. We wanted a late lunch on a pretty winter Sunday and cruised down North Highland looking for a parking spot. Luckily, we wound up right by Osteria and happened to notice that the patio was wide open. We were seated right away; there were only a handful of other tables seated at 2:30pm on a Sunday. Service was pretty quick, as you can imagine with such a limited number of seated tables. Unfortunately our server was fumbling a bit and brought two outdated beer lists before finding the right one. Not *too* big of a deal, let's be honest, especially as she was super friendly. We split the bruschetta appetizer ($6) and the pesto pizza ($12). The bruschetta was yummy, although pretty standard. It came with three slices of lightly toasted bread topped with an absolutely heaping pile of tomatoes, basil, and garlic tossed in olive oil. I am a big tomato fan and these were perfectly ripe. YUM. We both enjoyed the pesto pie (housemade pesto, goat cheese, and parmigiano cheese). The pizza is a 12" hand-tossed thin-crust, so just enough for two people to split. As with other reviews, the amount of sauce was very little. Almost a joke. I won't order from here or eat here again. Out of 4 dishes, the total sauce would have been the normal amount for 1 dish. we go here for dinner all the time and havent had a bad experience yet. everything has been tasty (well maybe not some of the desserts that they dont make themselves). Its been great food at very reasonable prices. we often get the same waiter who now recognizes us. since theyve been pushing brunch, we tried that but it was disappointing. the food wasnt very good and the service was even worse. food not coming out on time to the point we had to leave. coffee wasnt great. eggs tasted weird. service was very very slow.. note to wait staff , if your guests order coffee, walk around now and then and ask them if they want more. one person in our party got sick after eating but who knows what triggered that. we wont go again for brunch but as long as the dinner quality stays the same, we'll continue going there. read more

Based off of customer service and experience alone...Terrible Experience During COVID pandemic, we are trying to support local restaurants. Since moving on the same block of Osteria a few months ago, I've been wanting to visit this restaurant. Tonight, we walked a half a block and was told it would be about 30min wait and they could text us or we cold wait outside. We opted for the text alert so we could go next door to Ocean Wave for a drink because Osteria said their bar is not open right now. Since we received the text quite a while later, we closed out and went straight to Osteria quickly. As the hostess brought me to the table, I overheard the waiter say "Finally" to her. We sat down and I asked for a bourbon on the rocks. He proceeded to tell me that they "only have wine, beer, and mixed drinks in a can bc of Covid". I didn't understand this because if you can pour wine or beer, you can pour bourbon. I then asked why the printed specials on the menu do not match the daily specials posted online, specifically the baked ziti. The waiter said, "sorry, they should have updated the specials but they must not have." I said, then, we will just take the calamari appetizer and head out. He went inside and came back stating they do have the baked ziti after-all. I said great, we'll take the calamari appetizer, baked ziti, and fried trout which comes with a side. He gave me some veggies options but I asked, "May I have the Brussel sprouts as my side even if it is an additional cost please?" He said, "let me check." He came back and said, "my manager said, no we cannot do the Brussel sprouts as a side." I fully understand there are some changes to adapt to the pandemic...wait time, limited menus, etc. But the jab upon walking in, the inability to pour straight up bourbon when it's in stock at the bar, the inflexibility to have Brussels as a side even when I offer to pay the difference. The pizza itself was evocative of Roman decadence, aged balsamic splashed over a wafer thin crust with sheets of prosciutto; it was small enough to be eaten in one sitting without being filling. While I can't say that the $13 menu item filled me up, there is no question that it was representative of the lifestyle and culture of the world's papal nucleus : Italy (or, "lo Stivale"). The cocktails are all very exotic and intriguing but taste like the creations of a dorm room mixologist's weekend leftovers. I love a good "local weeknight" spot and this is my favorite everyday Italian. Why? Well, besides Tuesday's half-price wine night, the food is terrific. I have a hard time not starting with the arugula salad - I got hooked on this simple dish at Ciao Bella years back and when I find a place that does it right, with a just-right lemon vinaigrette and lots of hearty parmesan, plus fresh ground black pepper, like they did and like Osteria does, I gobble it up! - but I've found several apps I really enjoy on their menu as well. The calamari is perfect - and an interesting change from the "rings" you see lots of places, as they serve it in "pieces" - and the bruschetta is the best I've had since my semester in Rome. Their pizzas are thin, stone-oven baked and yummy; my favorite is the margherita. As for the pastas, I've had a number of theirs, all good, but by far my favorites are the chicken ravioli (just-rich-enough without being too much) and the pasta marinara. If you're a meat sauce lover, you should also try the pappardelle bolognese - YUM! In the heart of VaHi this is a good place for a quick bite or a meet up with friends. Their beer selection is extensive and they have off-menu food specials daily. I had ravioli - a bit undercooked and therefore chewy. The blush sauce (similar to vodka sauce) was the best part. My wife had eggplant parm and liked it. We needed fast service since we were headed to the Benz for a United game, and they came through in that respect. read more

Located in Virginia Highlands, Osteria offers simple Italian eats with a price that won't break the bank. The best thing about Osteria is that they understand the art of using a few ingredients to create something mouthwatering. Take their spaghetti pomodoro for instance -- tomato, onion, basil, and EVOO: simply to die for. And if you aren't in the mood for pasta, try their pizza! My partner in eating crime, Trish, swears it is the closest to true Naples style pizza that she has had in the States. The menu is clearly marked with vegetarian options and their takeout containers are cardboard so of course I'm a fan on that front! And, (drum roll please... ) they offer organic wine! In case you have been living under a rock, organic wine contains little or no sulfites (what gives you a hangover), meaning you can head over on a weekday without worrying about a nasty hangover at work the next day. I love the thin Neapolitan pizzas as a change of pace from my usual forays to Savage and Grant Central. And by typing that sentence, I'm realizing how often I eat pizza. Not that there's anything wrong with that. As far as patio spaces go, I really enjoy Osteria 832's. It's not sprawling or overly crowded, it's just right. They offer $1 PBR bottles on Monday nights, which doesn't quite go with the fancy pizza, but it certainly goes down easy. As Duane M. mentioned, parking is an issue but that's going to be the case for any place in the Highlands. It goes with the territory. read more
