As a native Bostonian , I have always found it difficult to find really good pizza on the North Shore, so, for a long time I have been making my own pizza. However, we discovered Otto pizza, at one point, while we were in Portland Maine and then, to our delight, we found out that there is an Otto branch in Newburyport. The pizza is great; the ingredients are what make it so: excellent quality cheese; the sauce is not merely a crushed tomato sauce from a can; it has a good flavor and texture. Above all, the pizza dough is of high quality. The pizza makers know when the dough is set and ready for making pizzas. This makes a huge difference. All other ingredients of choice are also of very good quality. All of the above give Otto pizza a plus five stars in my opinion. So the 2 pizzas tonight cost $38 with tip. I ordered online at 5pm for a 5:55pm pickup. It's Friday after a long week teaching high school kids for both of us. 1st pizza ready at 6. 2nd pizza will be ready in a few minutes (they said). That was a lie. So we waited. And waited. 1st pizza getting cold. Turns out the 2nd was never cooked and was just going in oven at around 6:20. 25 minutes after supposed pick up time. Girl at counter apologized but no convo from manager. Finally at 6:35, after 35 minutes waiting for one pizza, not a fancy dinner, a pizza, after much confusion we get the 2nd pizza. But wait there is more. When we get the much delayed pizza home and try to take a slice, all the toppings slide off, so now it's a deconstructed pizza I guess. 1st pizza is cold. 2nd pizza not really a pizza any more but have eat so I bite into semi raw pizza dough with sliding toppings. Yum. Now if this was the 1st time we waited for pizza at Ottos that would be bad but it was the 2 nd time in the last 2 visits. So I'm done. I don't anticipate a response to this from the company cuz nowadays businesses just say sorry and leave it that but hopefully others will avoid this overpriced pizza with horrible service. read more

Wednesday afternoon I called to order a pizza they informed me it would be 40 minutes I said that's not a problem then they hung up the phone. I called back call hung up on again. This place has been awesome I order pizza at least once a week for the last 3 years and never had a problem so I let it go .I'm waiting for my pizza an hour and 40 minutes go by so I call and ask where my pizza is and they pretend like they never got the call. Our company has ordered pizza from OTTO a bunch of times but I had never been there myself. I ordered a few pizzas to surprise my IT Team and finally found where this location was. I had driven past in many times but had not noticed it. Once I got in the 2 guys working there were so kind and had my pizzas ready and gave me plenty of plates and napkins and asked if I needed anything else. I thanked them and they thanked me back and said to enjoy and have a great day. I really did appreciate the kindness and the pizza was loved by our IT department! 3 pizzas only 5 guys in office that day and not a slice was left. Will be back there again for sure! read more

Pizza was okay, decent crust and some interesting toppings. However, it is a bit overpriced, I spent $100 on 3 small pizzas. The most disappointing aspect was that not a single one had marinara on it! After reviewing the menu again, I noticed some fine print on the very bottom of the menu that said only the pizzas with the red dot on the menu have red sauce. Wish I had known this beforehand. Went there for the first time last week. We ordered 4 pizzas and they were Fantastic!! I'm never ordering pizza anywhere else, it was soooo good. Crust is scratch made and toppings were generous and a bit eclectic. Had something with scallion and mashed potatoes and it was magnificent!!!! The gluten free pizza (wouldn't bother with it personally) was enjoyed by others in my family who are connoisseurs of such things.... I love Otto and I've never had a bad pizza there. I've been to this location many times and they're always on par with the rest until tonight. I ordered my usual favorite: squash ricotta cranberry. At first the pizza just looked a bit undercooked. Which is fine, I planned to reheat it at home anyway. When I reheated it the pizza remained limp and soggy. I went in for a bite and immediately knew something was wrong. The squash was tasteless, slimy, and borderline inedible. This is what usually happens when squash goes bad and just my luck, they put way more on than usual. I scraped it off half the pizza and threw the rest out. Pretty disappointing. read more

I can not believe how much this place has gone downhill. How do you go from being the best slice of pizza I've ever had to the absolute worst!? Are they trying to go out of business?? They have this sandy crud on the bottom of the pizza now that crunches in your teeth like dirt. The people are incredibly rude and act like they're doing you a favor to give you what you paid for. TERRIBLE experience!! My husband and I were away on a weekend getaway to celebrate our third wedding anniversary at the luxurious Blue Inn at Plum Island and wanted to do delivery on our first night in, in front of the fireplace. We chose Ottos and let me start by saying the person who took the order was extremely rude and acted as if we were disturbing him in the middle of the bowl he just smoked. Then the pizza arrived and the bottom was completely black and charred. The top of the pizza was marinated in so much tomato sauce that I could barely see the pepperoni or cheese. I don't know how anyone could possibly screw up a pepperoni pizza that much, but there is a first for everything. Some people just belong smoking bowls and not making pizzas. There is a reviewer below with the same star rating who pretty much hit the nail right on the head but I will put in a few more cents. I'd say I'd give this place a 2.5 stars if I could because the people who work here are super friendly and ordering and getting the food is fast and efficient. You can also sign up to have Leary's deliver beer and wine which is kinda cool, but its a bit tricky so I never use it. I also like the flavor of some of the toppings they put together a lot. So what's the big issue? Note that I called it "food" above, because it ain't "pizza" and it's a bit pricey for what you get. I am a thin crust and neapolitan pizza fan all the way, so I was super excited when I saw what an Otto "pizza" looked like (before I realized it wasn't pizza). I wasn't even weirded out by the fact that they have no sauce (no, not white sauce, literally no sauce, at least none of the "pizzas" I've had the five or so times I've ordered from Otto). The dough and cheese, as mentioned in that other review, are dry and hard/crusted respectively. It is impossible for the "pizza" to stay soft because there is no sauce and the pizza is so cracker thin, the cheese cools off and becomes hard by the time I can get it home a few blocks away. This is less of a problem with some of their "pizzas" that have more, and more wet toppings, but a simple one is doomed to become incredibly leathery and tough to eat, even fresh out of the oven. If Otto put a thin layer of sauce on their "pizzas", not even just tomato (I'm not really attached to red sauces, which is why I had high hopes for Otto), but something that complemented the other ingredients and toppings well, alfredo style sauce, hollandaise, bearnaise, or even a light demi glace of some sort, and made the dough a few hairs thicker (but still very thin), I think they'd have amazingly unique pizzas fit for any foodie hipster or legit pizza lover, and not just big round leather crackers with unfortunate amazing toppings. read more

It's great to have an Otto's location even remotely close by as the locations in Harvard Square and Portland, Maine are so far apart and places I don't find myself often enough to enjoy their food. The Newburyport location is located inside Leary's Liquor store and the quality of the pizza is just as good as the other locations. Caramelized pears, wild mushrooms, pancetta, and pulled pork were some of the days great rotating slices, showing the innovative and delicious combinations Otto is known for. This location was packed when I was there, more people were in line for the pizza than the liquor store. It's good to see they are doing well and sticking to the same recipe that worked at making them the best thin crust pizza is New England. Hopefully, the success of this location will lead to more, maybe in New Hampshire (wink wink). Best of luck. read more

My wife and I were visiting my parents for the holidays and when my parents suggested pizza I admit that I was like "Eh, really?" See, I grew up in Newburyport, and the norm was the greasy Greek style stuff with flabby, flavorless crust. But they insisted that Otto's was different, so I relented. I am glad I did. As another reviewer pointed out, this is the thin crust style, and the crust is rubbed in olive oil. I actually quite like this style, so unlike the other reviewer, I consider this a plus. I loathe soggy pizza crust. Otto's uses cornmeal on their peels, which, again, I love. I also like the dollops of red sauce instead of a uniform layer unlike the other reviewer. We ordered 4 pizzas (big family): eggplant, 4 cheese, chicken, and kalamata. All of the pizzas were great except the eggplant which was a bit bland. The kalamata and 4-cheese (which had dollops of ricotta) were by far the best. Now, we didn't order a margherita, which I consider the true test of a pizza maker's skill, so I'm interpolating a bit here, but I think Otto's gets it mostly right. The only improvements I would make are: a wood oven would really kick this into the stratosphere, and I like a yeastier crust (like the kind you get with a pre-ferment). That said, this is definitely the best pizza in Newburyport and arguably better than Flatbreads in Amesbury. Being located in Leary's is also pure genius. Now that there's a decent pizza joint down the street I might visit my parents more often ;) read more

Awesome pizza with funky ingredients. This place is located in a liquor store. Like, in it. Not connected to, but in it. You've gotta respect that. The pizza is a little pricey but worth it. It has a delicious thin-crust (as all pizza should) and really fresh-teasing cheese by what sets OTTO apart besides the location (which is incredible - pick up a cider, beer, wine, or gin with your pie) are the sauce choices and ingredients. Some of them sound like they really shouldn't work - by they all do. My advice - find the weirdest sounding pizza on the menu and order it. And buy some cider to go with it.
