What's that I taste? Nothing? Can it be? The meat didn't have ANY flavor, no salt, no pepper, not even a slight hint that it was ground beef in there... P. Terry's is awesome! My boyfriend brought me here a few summers ago and we have been together a few times since. I brought my young nephew's here and they loved it as well! (They kept calling the burger's "Krabby Patties".) This place is great for families and groups and they have delicious burgers and fries. I don't frequent this place often but when I do, I always enjoy it. They also have shakes which are soooo yummy! The only thing I didn't like about this place that I have noticed is that it often gets really loud inside. I don't normally have an issue with that, but for some reason it felt very overstimulating in this environment... My favorite burger in town. Fresh ingredients. Natural beef. The burgers are just the right size without being soaked in grease. According to their mission statement this place was established after reading Fast Food Nation. I never leave there feeling guilty for what I just ate, like a lot of other burger joints in town. Plus, the hubby and I can have a meal there for under $10! I don't know anywhere else in town that we can both fill up for that cheap. I love the new building design. First of all, dumbest name ever for a burger joint. I avoided this place for at least a couple of years because of the name alone. It sounds like a place where young urban mothers go to get their annual colon cleanse. Which is actually not too far from the truth... So, I was finally convinced to give P. Terry's a try last year (after I had finally heard enough people raving about it that I was willing to ignore the name and see what all the damn fuss was about) and I was not really impressed. However, in an effort to be fair and balanced--after all, it could be that I had gone to P.Terry's on an off day, and after all, I ordered it to go which always adds a layer of meh to greasy cheesy foods--I decided to give it another try. NO. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The burgers are tiny and virtually tasteless. There is a giant hunk of iceberg lettuce smirking at you from betwixt the smashed, untoasted buns (which they proudly proclaim to be from the Mrs. Baird's line of breads as if that means something interesting or profound). Also, NO BACON. None at all. No choice of cheese, either. It's either American or nothing. Mushy shoestring fries that I ate mostly out of spite. Annoying decor, almost as annoying patrons. The employees at the counter didn't manage to get our order right despite only having about five items on the menu from which to create a ticket. Oh, Hi there P. Terry's! I used to go to the original P. Terry's on South Lamar @ Barton Springs almost weekly when Patrick Terry himself was showing the colors. P. Terry's is a quality product and Austin original that pretty much took a bunch of copies out of the In-N-Out playbook. Hey -- Fuck it! Great artists steal, right? The P. Terry's meat is high quality and super tasty. They have a simple menu which is very customizable. Wheat buns and grilled jalapenos / onions are a great touch. ... BACON... -- yeah.. They've got that which is something the In-N-Out doesn't have. Oh yeah, and it's super affordable. A combo sets you back $7 maybe? Same prices as fast-food places like McDonalds except you won't hate yourself afterwards. The only things that could make PTs better in my opinion: 1) Thicker cut fries. -- I know it's not your style, but humor me. 2) Dusted sweet potato fries. -- To go with your wheat bun! Of course! 3) Avocado -- Because, why not :). And lastly: 4) Non soft-serve milkshakes. I mean ... You're already good but COULD be great! We're into this five star deal if they're doing what they set out to do well - and ioho (in our humble opinion) P Terry's does what it set out to do better than anyone in town. The likeness to In n Out is not lost on us. It's not the same, but they're not trying to be In n Out Texas. Great design in this N Lamar location. They hired some great architect and if remembered right, one of their newer shirts used this drawing. Took an old building and made it slick. Cool lines inside where the ceiling meets the horizontal boards. (so says dad, kids and mom looked at dad like he was stoned. Again.). Dad also took the pic of the bathroom. Yes, impressed with clean bathrooms and he did wash his hands and pulled the door open with his foot - a newer showing up device on the bottom of bathroom doors where it also indicates cleanliness is important to the restaurant. Not a lot to the menu that hasn't been said. This is a burgers/fries joint and is not trying to be anything else. We appreciate the smaller burgers because eating a 1/3 pound of meat in one meal is stupid. Fries are great and they say all the good stuff about the food source. We left feeling good... and safe. Those giant balls in the front give a false sense that Al Qaeda can't car bomb the place. My first experience with P Terry's was at ACL and I thought it was the best burger ever. Now looking back, I think the elements and many adult beverages clouded my judgment. I have been back to P Terry's a few times after that ACL experience looking for that great burger, but I have only found a decent burger. I think the chicken burger is far superior to the beef burger and if I go back I'll be ordering the chicken burger. I found the chicken burger to be seasoned well, moist and good size. The fries at P Terry's are not good. They lack in seasoning and are pretty limp. They looked a lot better than they tasted!! If I am in need of food fast (not fast food), and I am near a P Terry's, I find it acceptable to partake although the line is usually incredibly long during lunch so sometimes the 'fast' is negated. Their veggie burger is yummy but their fries . . . well they aren't my favorite in town. I do appreciate their willingness to make me an Arnold Palmer with their fresh lemonade and I love that they source their tomatoes locally (even during the winter - hydroponically grown), so I will gladly eat here over McNasty's or BurgerYuck any day. Nasty. People will tell you this place is "Uh-mazing!" and "So good!". Don't listen to them. They're the devil. Nothing about P Terry's is good or amazing. The burgers are about the size and quality of a McDonald's burger (I hate McDonald's) and the fries are tiny and lifeless. There isn't one redeeming quality that I can site that would convince me to go back to P Terry's. So what is it about places like this in Austin, then? Is it a mass delusion? Good fast food burger, it reminded me of an Austin version of In-N-Out (I thought that was my own unique thought until I read it in a bunch of the other reviews, damn!). I was pleasantly surprised by the inexpensive prices, plentiful iced tea, and the very modern Jetson-esque building (stolen from Kevin N.). The parking lot here is tight and especially tricky with the drive-thru line coiling tightly around the building but the windows and outdoor seating provide excellent entertainment (think a live version of the parallel parking scene from Austin Powers). read more

This shouldn't be labeled a "review". This might as well be a love letter to my favorite fast food burger place in Austin. I am a big fan of the lettuce wrap veggie cheeseburger. The first time I ordered the veggie cheeseburger without the bun it was like unwrapping a present. The PTerry's crew took their time and made sure the lettuce wrap was put together nice and neatly (no thrown together mess of a burger wrap here folks). It held together well and the lettuce was supremely fresh and crisp. It was absolutely delicious. They even included a little container of the 'secret' sauce for dipping. It's my 'go-to' order on their menu and i've never been disappointed and I don't miss the bun either :) Fries are also tasty- think freshly cut and fried in 'healthy oil'. In my opinion for the price, timely service and quality of food- it's one of the FF joints in town. read more

Whoever mentioned that P. Terry's has become the In-N-Out of Austin is off their rocker. For the past few months I've been hearing similar claims, that P. Terry's has great awesome-tastic burgers! Well I say to them... yeah, great if you're 5 years old and your favorite restaurant is McDonald's! I question the meat. It looks fake/triple-processed and yes, like McDonald's. Or like a frozen sausage from a Jimmy Dean breakfast biscuit. GROSS. The buns also look fake (I didn't even think that was possible). I think they might have toasted them for 2 seconds. The cheese wasn't melted at all and I'm pretty sure I have kraft singles in my fridge. Oh and THANK YOU for the single piece of iceberg lettuce! That shit is so hard to find these days. The single-patty burger is literally the size of my fist. The fries were mediocre at best, and I left hungry. I was truly disappointed that this food sucked so much.... Why is this place so packed? Why does it get so many good reviews? Does Austin really have no taste in burgers? If you want a cheap "fast-food" like burger go to Shortstop at least, and if you want a GOOD one (meaning relatively expensive) seek and you shall find. But there should never be an instance where you think, "I think I'm going to go to P. Terry's today!" If that thought happens to cross your mind, promptly check into a mental institution. read more

It actually reminded me of in and out burger. They have a "secret sauce" pretty sure it's thousand island. My real beef with p Terry's is they didn't offer anything without carbs! This was one of the first places I was told about when I moved to Austin for school. Everything's organic (whoop-dee) but it's great nonetheless. It's way better than other fast food joints and not much more expensive. The people working are genuinely nice, especially at the N. Lamar location. The burgers aren't very big and they're pricier than their chain counterparts, but that's the only bad I have to say. The veggie burgers are the best I've had and the fries and cookies aren't half bad either. Definitely worth a try if you're ever in need for a quick lunch or dinner, but don't expect some awesome "Uniquely Austin" experience. P Terry's is pleasant and affordable, and setting itself up for a lot of growth. I'm excited to see how they do in the future. read more

Disappointed! Why take an old, cool joint like Hill-Berts' and scrape it off for a joint that is the same quality as a McDonalds'?! The burgers are small, they use American cheese and the whole burger is marginally larger than a "slider". Give this a miss. Apparently an Austin institution, it was certainly popular around 6:30pm on a weekday. Line at the drive up window was blocking traffic out on the street. Price is right, double cheese burger, fries and shake for less than $8. So what do get for $8? Meat patties that are thinner than the pickles, good amount of thin cut fries that were more limp than crispy, shake that was ok but melted down very quickly to thin liquid. See a pattern here?...thin is in.... So it wasn't really a bad meal, just expected a step or two above big name chains, but experienced less. read more

Oh P. Terry's how overrated you are. My friends recommended the place after a fun day at Zilker Park. It's a place that I drive by once and a while but never tried. It looked hip from the outside. Once we got there I realized that it wasn't a sit in burger joint but rather a sit outside in the hot sun and dirty picnic table burger stand. I order quickly enough from a small concise menu of burgers, fries, and shakes with seemingly affordable prices. With the rave reviews of the place from my friends I expected a good meal. What I got was something on a the contrary. For what I paid, I got something small. A small, tasteless and unsatisfying burger. Can I call it a burger? No I don't consider it a true burger. Just an imitation of one that would make someone who eats fast food on a daily basis happy. A half pound of meat between two buns with cheese,lettuce, onions, pickles, and your choice of mustard/mayo/ketchup/bbq sauce or other condiments is a burger. This was 1/5 (maybe less) a pound of meat between some soggy buns and a piece of lettuce with a tomato. The fries were super thin (again tasteless and unseasoned) and in a small paper pocket. The chocolate shake was decent. If you're looking to get full and satisfied eating a big gourmet burger, don't come here. If you're looking for a fancier fast food place and have the appetite of a small child then yeah come here. read more

The 3.5 rating that P Terry's currently holds is a little ridiculous. You can get a double cheeseburger meal for around $6, you can't do that anywhere else in town except for McDonald's. P Terry's delivers fast food done right. For the price of a meal at McDonald's you're getting real, fresh, delicious ingredients. The burgers are top notch and they'll even let you replace the buns with a lettuce wrap so it's paleo/keto friendly. The design of every location is unique, clean, and cool-looking. Finally, the staff is always really nice and attentive. The only downside is the french fries which are really hit or miss. I think the fact that they're cut so thin means that they don't stay crisp as long. Getting the tries to-go and eating them at home is a bit of a disaster and for that, they're 4 stars rather than 5. Nevertheless, I come here at least once a week and just skip out on the fries. read more

Now serving breakfast! On Jan. 24 P. Terry's launched a breakfast menu. My teenage daughter and I went yesterday to check it out before her soccer game, and took a "we'll try one of everything" approach. The "egg burger" was tasty and I would have gladly paid the small upcharge to add ham or sausage, except I don't eat pork. I'm hoping they'll add a veggie sausage alternative. Kudos, though, for the whole wheat bun option. The banana bread was a winner, kinda plain and simple, but a good basic, satisfying sweet bread to go with the fresh-squeezed orange juice. The breakfast poatoes were crisp and nicely cooked, but need some seasoning. The free salsa is tasty -- a little zippy -- and went well with both the egg burger and the potatoes. Our meal of two burgers, one banana bread, one breakfast potatoes, and a small (12 oz!) orange juice was $8 and some change -- a great bargain for a tasty and fun meal. We love P. Terry's for its veggie burgers, and with a few tweaks, we can love it for breakfast too! read more

Let's get this straight - the great american meal of a burger, fries and a shake is as closely related to food as I am to the Queen of England. So how come I've been back here 4 times in the last 3 months? Surely I don't hate the Queen or myself that much? It's convenient, consistent, inexpensive and not McDonalds. It's also near the hospital my son was born at (which accounts for three visits to the burger shop 11 weeks ago). I went again today and the chicken burger was passable and I enjoyed the wheat bun and pickle options. On both of my burgers. Which I ate in my car in the car park of Central Market under a shady tree as my kids were both asleep in the car and we had to use the drive through. OMG. Oh god. Has it come to this. Drive throughs and burgers. Shoot me now... no wait! P Terry's burgers are fresh. They are made from things that resemble food and were grown and reared locally (according to their marketing department). The fries are made from potatoes. They disclose where they buy their beef from. It tastes quite nice. All in all, I enjoyed the meal, left without feeling like I'd strangled any overcrowded chickens, and my fat gland has been restocked. I'd go again. But it's still not food. read more

Not so long ago, I thought P. Terry's was the best fast food burger you could get in Austin. But lately, it's fallen from favor with me for several reasons: 1) The last couple of times I've been, the burgers have been dry and tasteless. I definitely regretted my decision NOT to get a cheeseburger, because the sauce wasn't enough to make up for the dryness of the meat. 2) As mentioned in previous reviews, the burgers are kind of small. I agree that the huge side of fries fills you up after the burger is long gone, but sometimes I just want a big, juicy burger. P. Terry's is not the place to go for this (that would be Five Guys). However, there are many things that I do love about P. Terry's, including: 1) The option to have wheat buns (for 20 cents more). 2) The chicken burger is actually very juicy and flavorful, I just don't know why this can't translate to their beef burgers. 3) Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are my favorite kind of cookie (and hard to find), so this is a huge plus for me. 4) Fresh-brewed lemonade and yummy fries (if you like the skinny kind). 5) Most importantly, since this isn't some huge national chain, you know the food is actually food, and not food by-product with chemicals mixed in. Bottom line is, if I'm looking for a burger fix, I'll go to Five Guys, but P. Terry's still has its charms. read more

I thought the 'P' in P. Terry stood for Poopy. That is what I thought of their food after eating it for the first time. I was unimpressed with the hype. However after a few more consumptions, my bowels regained their natural vigor... wait.. what? The burger isn't going to blow you away but it is definitely better than the trash you find at other fast food joints. Yum on P Terry fries. The fresh squeezed lemonade is a great blend of sweet and sour. Refills cost extra. Like many others echoed, the price is inexpensive and that is music to my butt.. because my wallet is there. The establishment feels like a futuristic burger diner with the open spaces, cleanliness, and natural light shining throughout. This location is SO much better than the South Lamar location! It's like fast food, but with a sit down restaurant kind of atmosphere! I was really impressed with this location's cleanliness and the friendliness of the staff. Like always, their burgers are made to order, and the quality of the beef and the veggies are top notch! Their burgers are made so well, it really doesn't feel like fast food! Another big plus I enjoy here that the South Lamar location doesn't have is that their drinks are free refills! This includes Austin's own Maine Root sodas! For $1.50, a refillable drink with Maine Root soda is a spectacular deal. A very family friendly aspect of this location is a quaint little sand pit that kids can play in, and it's right next to a glass window and is accompanied by tables outside, so the parents can watch their kids. There's also a diner style bar at the front where you can sit on higher benches and watch the cooks make their burgers. A plus if you like that sort of thing. All in all, a high quality burger that stands way above any fast food in Austin, but may have a little ways to go to compete with the top tier burger places in ATX. read more

Not sure why it took me so long to try out P. Terry's since I have tried just about every other local burger chain. I think I was turned off by the first initial thing as it makes me think of big business (J. Paul Getty, H. Ross Perot), formulaic product (M. Night Shyamlan), ruthlessness (J. Edgar Hoover), and taking advantage of minorities (C. Thomas Howell's false claim of a minority-targeted Harvard scholarship in Soul Man). Anyway, I thought while P. Terry's burgers (thin patty) follows the standard format of local/regional burger chains, I liked it a touch better than many of them such as Dan's, Fran's, Hill-Bert's, Whataburger & Sonic. Fries are okay. Dug the strawberry shake. And prices are cheap. Won't be racing back but would eat it again if in the area - particularly if I was craving a shake. read more

Comparable to Five Guys and In-N-Out. A little higher class burger than the normal fast food joint, complete with a casual, but clean indoor seating area as well as a drive-thru. Great place to get a good cheeseburger for a little over $3. I'd be up for trying their breakfast menu or the chicken burger sometime. Not a huge fan of the fries. Thin, floppy, and nothing more than chewy, dry potato strings. Bottom line: Burgers that aren't overly greasy, fast service, clean seating area. In a standoff between P.Terrys vs In-N-Out, P.Terry's wins every time. I grew up in Austin and now live in Virginia and it's the one place I have to go when I am back home. Sure there's a lot of great restaurants in Austin (probably even better burgers, cough cough hopdoddys), but P.Terry's is home. P. Terry's is a hot summer's day sitting on the grass at Barton springs. While In-N-Out is comparable to all the people that think it's ok for them to move to Austin (not welcomed and a disgrace). If you're going to P.Terry's, be prepared to welcome good in your life. For the best experience, eat the fries immediately. Hot P. Terry's fries are a gift to this earth. read more

(6/10) Cheeseburger 100% all natural black angus beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce. Being In-n-Out lovers, we have been itching to try P. Terry's after reading the comparisons between the two burger joints. Unfortunately, this is another place that just doesn't stack up. The cheeseburger here is about the size of a McDonald's burger - and we all know how small those are. The beef patty, although delicious, is very thin and the bun size was on the small-side. The "special sauce" is basically just mayo with some ketchup and mustard in there - nothing special about it. On a positive note, they offer a wheat bun for 20 cents extra which was yummy. Overall, the burger was tasty but it was not satisfying. For a few dollars more, you can enjoy a truly amazing mouthwatering burger from Artz Rib House. (6/10) Veggie Burger Veggie patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce. The veggie burger is highly recommended on other review sites so we had to give it a try. Veggie burgers are a nice alternative when you are not in the "meaty" mood and often times can be quite satisfying. The patty here is made of potatoes and beans and is pretty good. The patty itself did not have too much flavor, but when fully dressed everything went well together. The size of it is the same as the cheeseburger, so it left us wanting more. But at $4 a piece, it just isn't worth it. If you are looking for something better, try the black bean burger at Chili's. (5/10) French Fries Fresh cut fries prepared in 100% canola oil. When we hear about freshly cut fries, we usually imagine soft, thick, potatoey and mouthwatering fries. However, these were a big let down. They were very thin and empty feeling - it was not potatoey. Service (8/10) P. Terry's is a fast food burger joint where you order at the cashier and wait for your order to be prepared. The menu is simple and there was no line so ordering was a breeze. We were trying to decide if we wanted to order fries or not, so the friendly cashier went to get us a sample to try. She spoke to someone (who turned out to be the manager) and he came over and handed us a full order of fries on-the-house! You won't get that kind of service at McDonalds. Ambiance (8/10) The ambiance is far from the typical fast-food place that sells $2 burgers. This North Lamar location is brand new and features plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and parking, unlike their South Lamar location. The interior is bright, shiny and new, but with a diner look. The mix of metal, wood, glass, and stone combine to bring a unique architectural style to a place you would least expect it.
