The chicken with eggplant dish that I had was so dry, flavorless, luke warm at best and it tasted like that chicken had been cooked the night before. The eggplant itself was overcooked. For $20, I would've expected a better dish. Such an incredible disappointment. I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant. The best thing I had was the rice that came with the dish. Came for dinner here with friends on a cold night and it's a small cozy place tucked away in Montclair. There is street parking as well as a private lot which connects to the upper level of the Safeway parking lot so you should have no problem finding a parking space. Service was attentive and we ordered the Garlic Pepper Pork, Pad Woon Sen, Spicy Wide Noodles with Chicken, and Pad See Ew with Pork. Honestly, just incredible! I got to Pagarung just before closing and the staff were so graceful. They took my to-go order and gave me water while I waited. The service was excellent, everyone was nice. The restaurant was immaculate, very well decorated. When I got home I couldn't wait to eat. The Spring Rolls were perfect. Soft rice paper wrapper, crunchy veggies, and perfectly cooked prawns. The peanut sauce was flavorful, there was a spice that I could not detect, it added great value. The curry was just delicious. The sauce, the pumpkin, the chicken, and all the veggies were flavorful. I would love to give more details but not sure what to say other than I was extremely satisfied. The meal was everything needed and more. I'd been here prior to the pandemic and remember it being good, but my experience this time was literally perfect. My mom and I decided to try this place years after seeing it. Located in the upper parking lot area behind Starbucks/Safeway in Montclair there is ample parking. We arrived at opening time so we were first inside. The menu has multiple options. We tried the veggie fried rolls -they were great! Then we both got an entree - I had the Tom Kha soup. It was salty making it unenjoyable. My mom had a special- cashew prawns and veggies. Which she said lacked depth of flavor and was also salty. So we are thinking maybe we ordered the wrong items because this place has many great reviews. The staff are nice and friendly. The ambiance is great - very clean and spacious. We love this family run restaurant. The people are always so kind and accommodating. We've been going here since they reopened and have quite a few favorites: Pepper pork(flavor of the sauce and char from grill is so good), mango salad, green salad, chicken satay and some other mixed chicken and stir fry dishes. I'm not a chicken fan, unless it's juicy and flavorful and theirs is especially so. Maybe I've lucked out but I actually crave their satay. The restaurant is super clean and if they really wanted to up their game, they could change the decor and ambiance a bit and I could see the place being a great date night option. Maybe make the outdoor area more covered and heated? Perhaps they do a good take out business but whatever it is, I hope they stay around. Slight tip to the restaurant- every once in a while I get some really fatty pork...perhaps be more mindful of the cut of meat you serve? If I didn't have so much luck with the dish so often, I would have been turned off to the restaurant just from the 1-2 times .:) read more

What a delightful somewhat hidden gem! We came for dinner last night and enjoyed it so much. We had an amazing salmon dish with coconut curry, the most delightful moist BBQ chicken, pineapple fried rice, summer rolls with avocados that were so fresh and flavorful -and eggplant tofu with a creamy spicy sauce. We enjoyed every dish! We had plenty to take home. I don't know we Missed this place for so long. It's affordable comfy and has great outdoor seating to catch the last few warm days of the year. Like any restaurant, the food is only as good as the spirit of the people who cook and share it. The folks here couldn't be more nice and welcoming. Dear Pagarung Thai, You have some amazing sauces and marinades, the flavors are bold and bodacious. However, that said, the cuts of meat need to be on that same level. I've ordered the curry chicken, it's chicken breast, it's been dry and chewy in a few occasions. Last night the trout was over fried and the texture was of chicken, but at least more tender than the chicken in the curry. I loved the sauce on the trout, we bypassed the trout and had the sauce with rice. We ordered the garlic pepper pork and the eggplant pork. Again, the marinade and the sauces are GREAT. But the pork in both dishes were either cut with the grain or just a bad choice of meat. What my family had last night was rice and awesome sauce, all the protein was wasted. Once you put the pork in your mouth, immediately the taste buds are on "YUMMY" mode and then you're chewing, everyone is chewing and chewing that one bite of pork...and i can best describe the texture as wet cardboard. I know it's a tough piece meat when you can feel the meat going down45 minutes later. I want you all to survive and succeed and I want a place close by with GOOD FOOD! My advice, don't use chicken breast, unless you can pound it and make it tender and don't over cook it, the best alternative would to use dark meat, it's hard to overcook that. I also recommend using ground pork in the eggplant, because again, it's hard to F ground pork. I cook often, and once in awhile I want to have a great meal out...and after spending $80 for great sauce over rice, I'm still hungry, my family is still hungry. So now we're all sitting here hangry and I'll have to make scrambled eggs in a few hours. Anyhow, you have great sauces, now work on the protein, you can turn this around! TODAY! Yes, You Can! Because you have THE SAUCE, The sauce needs to be paired with protein that's on the same level, slice your meat against it the grain, we want tender...if you do this, you'll be money. Covid-19 Review: my man has been raving about this place since it used to be one of his favorites growing up. They follow all COVID-19 guidelines & currently is only offering outdoor seating at the moment. Food ordered via takeout: 1. Tamarind Fish(comes with roasted fish with tamarind fish sauce on a bed of tomato & lettuce): this is a must order! It had unique flavors, especially a mix of sweet and mild saltiness. The sweetness from the tamarind complemented well with the fish. My only complaint is that the fish was over cooked but that could have been because we ordered it takeout, I'll have to test this dish again when they're open for in-person dining. Regardless it was still tasty & the boyfriend and I had leftovers the next day. 2. Pad J(eggplant, green beans & Basil): definitely do not recommend this dish. The eggplant & green beans was over cooked & drenched in oil. The oil reduced the overall flavor of the dish. If this happens, i recommend adding a splash of rice vinegar to make up for the lack of flavor. 3. Mango with sticky rice: devoured this dish before taking a photo but let me tell you, this dessert most definitely made up for the mediocre pad J dish!! It was super rich with sweet rice cooked to PERFECTION; just the right amount of stickiness! And the mango tasted fresh so that was also the cherry on top of the meal. If you're on the fence & thinking of treating yourself, I say definitely go for it! Overall, the meal was filling and just the right amount of food for 2 people. Pagarung Thai is off the main streets of Montclair Village connected to Safeway's upper parking lot. I've only been here for lunch where it seems more take-out from people working near-by and always just a couple of tables occupied. Lunch dishes are in the $7-8 range and they have a combo for ~$11 where you can select two items. All the lunch items come with rice (choice of white or brown rice) and a salad. A few mushrooms and onions, but mainly the chicken, which frankly for the soup could have been better with less and more broth and other ingredients. The yellow curry was also flavorful and mild-to-medium spicy level. This had a better balance of ingredients with potatoes, carrots, and onions. Service is always friendly and attentive. 3.5 stars for the food. Rounding up for the service. Need to come back for dinner when they have a more varied selection of dishes read more

It's a bit nestled away in Montclair Village - but thank goodness for Yelp! Fred and I ordered the Pagarung beef and the Red Curry Shrimp. Both were very saucy and delicious. The 2 entrees with rice was more than enough food for the 2 of us and lunch for me for 2 days. I would absolutely come here again (even if there were more Thai restaurants to choose from). It can be a little hard to locate Pagarung, but it's basically above the Safeway & slightly behind (the area is on the side of a hill, so it's all slanted). Unlike much of Montclair Village, Pagarung does have its own parking lot that is above the Safeway & shared with the few other surrounding businesses. A nice perk. Now, the food. I guess I'm a Survivor nerd, but the name of this place always reminds me of the tribes from the first two seasons - Pagong and Okgaor. Together they're Pagongakor, or maybe Pagarung. We used to go here because we had Entertainment Guide coupons (and I used to trade on Craigslist to get ones we'd use), probably about 4 of them one year. It was kind of a relief when we made it through the coupons. None of the dishes were so good we ordered it a second time - they were all sort of mediocre - so it was nice not feeling like we had to eat our Thai food there to use the coupons.
