This review if for to-go ordering only for pizza. I have ordered to-go a handful of times and delivery is always very quick. They have also sent us a ton of coupons (bogo pizza deals etc) so prices are reasonable. Although I have tried their pasta before (and I honestly cannot remember how it tasted), we always order their pizza. Their pizza is really delicious. Their XL pizza is HUGE. Their medium pizza is the perfect size in my opinion (dinner for 2 or dinner plus tomorrow's lunch). The crust is on the thinner side but not so thin that it falls apart. I really like their plain cheese and their Quattro formaggi pizza. It's lighter on the tomato sauce, which I like having less acidity. But still has a little bit of that greasy pizza finish that reminds me of my childhood. I think this is the best pizza in Ballard. Give them a try if you haven't had their pizza yet. Meh. I ordered delivery approximately 45 minutes before they closed. After about an hour of waiting, I called to check on the status and was told that it should be here soon but since I ordered right before they closed (45 min?) it took longer. When my food did arrive, it was cold. And gross. The linguini zucca was everything that the menu said it would be. Noodles, zucchini, red peppers, absent the garlic and the parm on top was less than a pinch, I even paid an extra $3 for some cold, plain meatballs. I guess I was also hoping it would have some sort of... flavor. Pretty much greasy noodles and cold slimy sautéed veggies. The side salad was wilted slimy brown lettuce and canned black olives with a single slice of cucumber, single wedge of tomato, and a whole bunch of bagged shredded mozzarella. This is a go-to restaurant for me. The menu is gigantic and can be a bit intimidating on your first visit. That said, I can only think of one time where I had a meal that I wasn't satisfied with and it was a take out dish that I did not eat right away. I'm not sure what they do with their bread, but anything with a bread base (pre-meal rolls, garlic/cheese bread, pizza) is fantastic. Their marinara sauce is flavorful and a number of their pastas are worthy of repeating for me. One of my favorite entrees is their penne gorgonzola that has prosciutto in it. While pretty salty with the prosciutto and gorgonzola, it's difficult for me to carry on a conversation when I'm inhaling that dish. The wait staff are kind and setting is lovely as well. The kicker is that the price points for all their items are very low which makes this an oasis in a neighborhood that has no shortage of somewhat expensive restaurants. read more

You know what it's like when you have more people to feed then hot dogs? Well last night was like that and so to the take-away menu book to flip through the pages of menus. Italian sounded reseasonable as my main craving involved a ginormous Ceasar salad. Everyone else in the homestead was partial to this idea as well. Joy! Mom and I perused a menu for one place, even pestered Ian to hurry up and decided what he wanted. But then we came across a menu, newly arrived in mail that day, from Palermo. I admit I've been by it a few times and was very curious. Their delivery menu was vast and covered a lot of the usuals. I never ordered that damn Ceasar salad though. However I do think I did alright. -Cheese bread with thick marinara for dipping = Solid, not too much cheese, crisp yet chewy bread, not congeal-y or uber-oily -Baked cauliflower covered with thinly sliced red oinions & parmesan cheese all in a lemon-garlic sauce = Fuckin' delish! -Linguini Special: cubed chicken, sun-dried maters, artie hearts, capers, basil all in a sherry-lemon sauce = Lots of good flavors to support each other as well as good quantities, but oddly there wasn't enough actual linguini and the sherry-lemon sauce was sort of missing from the entire dish (wound up pouring the sauce from the cauliflower into it towards the end, very tasty that way!) -Tiramisu = decent, typical, but not super boozey (which is nice as the child LOVES tiramisu) The lady who took our order over the phone was friendly and knowledgeable, no attitude when I wanted to use the 20% off coupon that was on the menu flier. We were told 45 minutes, but the food was there in 25. The sides salad were good size with shredded cheese and a massive wedge of tomato (which I love!), the Italian Wedding soup was lackluster and pretty much flavorless. I went for the calzone and found it a little bland, with the crust being a bit too sweet for my taste. After some parm and chilis, it was quite edible. We've ordered dinner via delivery here a few times and we've been really happy with it. The first time I ordered the pasta with gorgonzola sauce, prosciutto with chicken on top and it was amazing, really flavorful and creamy. Tonight I got the salmon fettucine with house salad - yum! The delivery service is always prompt, within 30 to 40 mins and the prices are reasonable, especially considering the portion sizes are generous. Ray: Last Thursday, Josh and I were kicking around a few dinning ideas, when we went with what has been kind of a stand-by for us over the last month or two. We just decided to head to Ballard, specifically Market Street, and just go find a place to eat. We did just that and were attracted to Palermo Pizza and Pasta. I think it was the exterior of the restaurant that caught our eye at first, but when we got closer, it was the menu, posted on the entry window. I am pretty sure that there were around one-gazillion items there. It had a TON of items and they all sounded great. Josh looked at me and asked if I wanted to eat here, I resoundingly replied to the affirmative. We were the first customers of the day (again). We were seated and greeted promptly. The interior of Palermo's is really classy. Thoughtfully decorated with a warm and inviting atmosphere. When I got one of those attractive menus in my hand, I really got to study it out. It was so hard to decide, but I went with the Tortellacci, which is a pasta filled with crab and lobster (I know, right?!). It was in what was called a red and white sauce. It was actually pink, so I guess that's what happens when the red and white sauces collide. We decided to split a pitcher of Mack & Jacks Amber Ale. The meals arrived really fast, like seven minutes or something. I was expecting a longer wait. The pasta was nicely presented with two long slices of garlic bread garnishing each side of the plate. The pasta was delicious - the crab and lobster - divine... When it was all said and done, we each had a fabulous meal in a wonderful setting, all for just over $20 each. I mean, where can you get that kind of a deal, ya know? I have given this some thought and have decided to award Palermo Pizza and Pasta a full five stars for deliciousness at a great value! Josh: This thursday's galavant into the wilds of Ballard led us to Palermo Pizza and Pasta. We took a peek at the menu posted next to the front door and it looked pretty good, if even a little cheap. Might cause one to wonder what the catch is. We walked into the open dining room where they have a sort of gazebo set up, gives it a vineyard-y type of feel to it. The place was empty so we took a seat at a table near the window. Our server brought us menus and water, turns out they had a half-off all the wine on Thursdays, but we opted for a pitcher of Mack and Jacks. After a brief glance over the menu I decided on a calzone, but after hearing what my dad was ordering, I took a closer look and decided to order the same thing. I think the last time I saw a lobster and crab ravioli for under fourteen bucks was during the Clinton administration, but here it was, like a beautiful chimera through some sort of menu-shaped time portal. The wait was short and we were presented our meal. It was really quite delicious. You could really taste the crab and lobster in the raviolis. The sauce was plentiful, more then enough to mop up with delicious garlic bread. The sauce was very creamy, if even a little rich. It certainly didn't taste like a cheap dish. After being carpet bombed by their advertisements and fliers to the point of submission, I decided to end the culinary siege and give them a chance. That is, I decided to give them a chance upon learning that they serve all-day breakfast. And I'm happy that I did. As a little tip, this is probably a good choice to hit for weekend breakfast in Ballard. After having stood in long lines and waiting to get into the Dish and Portage Bay (although I like both of these places), it was nice to be able to walk right in and grab a seat at Palermo. The waitress was extremely friendly, even taking a bowl of water and some ham to a friendly, lovable dog out front while we were there. The decor isn't terribly memorable, sort of half-hearted Tuscan themed, but it's reasonably spacious and has front windows looking out on Market Street. Breakfast here is wide-ranging from the staples of eggs/pancakes/french toast to frittatas, omelets, scrambles and eggs benedict. I decided that a cup of coffee and the palermo omelette looked like the best options. The palermo omelet comes with green peppers, onions, cheddar and ham and was tasty. The coffee here was basic, but frequently refilled. In terms of price, most of the breakfast dishes were in the $10 range. I can't comment on the dinners here, but a couple sitting next to us was working on a pizza which smelled delightful. Overall, I'd say that Palermo is a sneakily nice place to pick up breakfast in the Ballard area. read more

Under normal circumstances, I might give this place a 3, but the other rave reviews probably boosted our expectations too high. This is a place with charmingly unprofessional interior design, and friendly people. But the food was underwhelming. It wasn't terrible. It did the job. But there are far too many spectacular choices in Ballard for us to come back here. My diagnosis: they have too many items on the menu. Huge list for each course. But that doesn't leave them enough to time to really care for and refine each recipe. I was on my way to Snoose Junction but decided to stop here when I saw a sign about pizza slices. I always get their advertisements in the mail so I decided to give it a try. I asked for two slices of pepperoni with a soda and the total came out to be $11. I didn't expect it to be that high but whatever, I will give it a shot. Sat outside, which was nice, and took a bite into one of the blandest pizzas I have ever tasted. It tasted like very thin, crispy thing with some hardened cheese on it and didn't really taste any sauce. Dude, what gives? I was really hesitant to give this place a two star because the staff was fantastic, very nice and inviting. I was up late studying and desperate to find a cheap delivery spot that didn't have an absurd minimum delivery fee. Palermo's is only $10 I believe which is pretty awesome. I ordered the Ravioli Aurora with Spinach and it was wayyyy better than I thought it was going to be. Really, really good! Totally affordable, too. I also got a free side salad and garlic bread with the order. My only complaint is that it took them a little over an hour to get from Ballard to Fremont, but whatever, the tastiness made up for that. Be careful with this place, especially if you order the Margherita pizza the first time. Here's what'll happen: It's about 11 p.m. on a weekend, you're decently buzzed and your most recent paycheck has already thinned itself out way too quick. The last thing you need to be doing is spending $30 on a pizza. Unfortunately, you've already eaten at Palermo and had the Margherita pizza, so you pick up the phone and order a $30 pizza (and of course you have it delivered, even though it's well within walking distance). These guys are awesome! Super friendly and family owned, they have a huge menu and will also do veggie substitutions for many of the meat dishes. I was worried about the vegetarian options, but they bent over backwards to accommodate. There are some real gems on the menu, too: the Ravioli Aurora is absolutely stellar and the Antipesto Pizza is impossible to stop eating. The Caprese Salad is a new favorite! I was being gluttonous last night and decided to order delivery for the first time from Palermo. I ordered the pasta carbonara along with garlic bread. The portions were solid - a lot of pasta, a small side salad that had unfortunately been warmed since it was squished up against my pasta. The half order of garlic bread ($3) was plenty, and it came with a cup of marinara to dip in. The carbonara sauce was really good, but the pancetta was sub-par. I wasn't impressed with their dressing options for the salad at all (ranch, blue cheese, 1000 island, and italian; a balsamic vinaigrette would have been appreciated). But, dang, the garlic bread was ON POINT. For take-out, I was generally pleased with how everything tasted. But they gave me an estimated one-hour delivery time and it took an extra 20 minutes for it to actually get there. So, yeah, it took them nearly an hour and a half to deliver my food and I live just a few blocks away. My conclusion? Lukewarm. If you're looking for a decent take-out pasta and don't necessarily need it in a timely manner, I'd say Palermo is a good option. I won't rule out trying Palermo next time I'm being lazy and want to binge on carbs, but it won't be my first choice, either. read more

My four stars are actually four and a half stars. I have ordered pizzas from Palermo several times and have always gotten delicious food delivered quickly and it was hot when we ate it. It had melty cheese and tasted great. Their dolmades were really tasty and the salads are huge and fresh. Their sandwiches are pretty gynormous and I ate two very filling and satisfying meals off of that sucker. The very first experience I had here was with an unfriendly waitress. During their busy lunch hours, they only have 1 waitress, who also serves as the host. So a lunch hour gets consumed by waiting around at Palermo. 2nd, they are too cheap to update the menu, so you will order something for $2.95, and your receipt will say $3.75, and they do not adjust your receipt. 3rd, they have a ton of NATS flying around the place, that get in your face and food. 4th, they have incorrectly charged me 3 times. I figured not every server can mess us, so I went back, but nope, 3 times in a row. They charged me for a soda, that I never received,. I consider my visit to Palermo quite solid in all aspects. I guess I didn't decide to come based on the fact I was going to eat great Italian food, it was more that this place is near my apartment and the reviews I had read of its sister restaurant sounded promising. We decided to start out with the baked cauliflower, and it was delicious. The sauce was garlicky and not overly creamy as to make it too rich... red onions and parmesan (I believe) were in there, too. The cauliflower wasn't overcooked (overcooked and mushy cauliflower gives me shivers of disgust), and the sauce was so good that after eating all of the pita that goes with it, I actually sopped some up with the pizza we ordered. Weird, I know. The salad was solid, no strange non-tomatoey taste in the tomatoes or other veggies (do you ever find that veggies some places taste peculiar? Like maybe it absorbed some plastic flavor from the frig?). The pizza wasn't bad by any means but certainly not in my top list. The toppings were good (I enjoyed the roasted red peppers), but there wasn't anything special about it. I love pizza, but there is truly a glut of mediocre pizza in this town. Our waitress was SUPER nice, I believe she is from an eastern European country that I have failed to remember. Very friendly, she had a lovely demeanor. There was some odd music going on, almost Muzak-like. But it gave my bf something to annoy me with, I think he may have lipsynched some Bryan Adams or Rob Thomas or the like. Good stuff. After my long days at work, I call in my order and they can recognize me by my voice and always remember who I am and we talk about whats going on in eachothers lives. Back in the day, my husband and I used to go to Palermo fairly often -- mostly the Capitol Hill location, but sometimes the Ballard location too,. I had particular taste for the Pollo Alla Cosentina -- chicken with prosciutto and mushrooms, baked in a cream sauce and topped with cheese. Terribly bad for you, I know. But, oh, so tasty. We'd not been in a while, though, and, so, when I found myself in Ballard one recent day, I decided to go back to Palermo and treat myself to a plate of my beloved Pollo. I was disappointed. The first thing I noticed was the dish was swarming with red onions. I did not recall those being there before. And, when I checked the menu later, they were not listed as an ingredient. I am not a huge fan of onions and would have preferred the meal without them. But, I could deal with them. Had my husband ordered this, though, he would have had to send it back. He is allergic to onions. Really, Palermo, you have to tell people about these things. I quickly decided, though, they decided to add the onions because the cream sauce had absolutely no flavor, The prosciutto, while plentiful, looked like it had been thrown on the top as an afterthought. The diced chicken looked (and tasted) like something you'd find in a frozen chicken pot pie. In short, this was far from the meal I remembered. And, at $14, with not even a side salad included, it was overpriced. My service was fine and I had decent sized glass of a decent house wine at a (reasonably) decent price. But, overall, my experience was very meh. With so many other food choices in Ballard, I cannot see going back any time soon. read more

Every time I order I'm surprised at how fast the food gets here. I sometimes wonder if they're psychic and know I'll order before I go to their website. I love that their website has ordering. I hate calling restaurants for take out. Usually the best restaurants are a bit hard to understand. Having a well-made online ordering system is awesome. Palermo does fast, and it does easy - it also does GOOD. I've had pizza, salad, and chicken wings. I haven't done pasta to go yet. I've never had a complaint about the food. So I had this place bookmarked since it's walking distance from my place, but I wasn't really in a rush to check it out. HOWEVER! I was talking to a sales associate at Lush, all the way up in Lynnwood and she actually recommended it! It was such a funny coincidence so I decided to go later that day. I got the seafood penne pasta with vodka sauce and my boyfriend got what the Lush lady recommended, the baked fettuccine alfredo with meatballs. We also ordered cheese bread, and our orders came with a side of either soup or salad. I went with the salad and he went with the soup. To start, the salad was really good! It was like a mediterranean salad. The soup he got was a potato and bacon soup which he really enjoyed. I tried it and thought it was pretty good too. On to the appetizer- cheese bread. It was really good. There's really not much to say about cheese bread, it's pretty straight forward. The entrees were both excellent. My seafood penne pasta was filled with seafood. Usually I feel like when I get a seafood pasta the seafood is kind of few and far between, but this was packed. Shrimp, octopus, squid, clams. It was magnificent. I honestly want to go back right now and get it again. The baked fettuccine was suuuuper cheesy. So if you like cheese, you'll like this. I personally thought it was quite good, and so did he. I ended up eating both of our leftovers the next day. Woops. They both tasted just as good. OH! I forgot that both of our dishes came with delicious garlic bread. How the heck does someone forget something like that?? We didn't get dessert because we were super full but I'd like to try their baklava. Service was really nice. We just stopped at Palermo's for breakfast on Thursday and my god are their portions huge. I ordered the breakfast quiche with bacon, onion, and mushroom and it was legitimately the size of a small pizza. Everyone at the table also enjoyed their meal (they both ordered the frittatas). The food tasted great and we had leftovers, the only complaint is that the service was a bit slow. Friendly, but not very quick.
