My father decided on this restaurant since they have a wide variety of "Texas Comfort" foods including burgers, baskets, platters, seafood, sandwiches, enchiladas and tacos. My goodness, everything is indeed bigger in Texas. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you get in there is a great atmosphere and the place is decked out with little trinkets, photos and other things. They get pretty busy during lunch and the servers get slammed so there is a little delay. As per my first sentence, the food portions are incredibly large. The prices are not too bad either. After trying to decide what to eat, since the menu selections are wide and vast in variety, i went with a safe bet of the Cheeseburger. Boy it was as big as my head and I had to toss the top bun just to be able to finish it all. It was solid. What a fun name to say. If you've never been there it's hard to find cuz it's on the feeder road of I-10 near Memorial Mall. It's a small place, very quaint. The menu has mostly American food, some Mexican and it is mostly fried. We had the fried jalepenos for starters and they were really good. The seeds were still in them so that made them extra spicy. Yummm yummm. I had the Texas Enchiladas and I'll tell you I ate every last bite. It came with big portions of sour cream and guacamole. Muy delicioso!! My hubby had the chicken tenders with the chipotle ranch sauce. He said they weren't very good. Oh well, can't please them all. 5 stars for what it is which is a low key neighborhood joint with a great menu of comfort food like burgers, BBQ and things like that. Another yelper said their burger was the best in houston. Honestly, it was a pretty darn good burger but the competition for that title is intense and I'm not sure if they are the best. I did like the white bread bun and that they include a few fried veggies with the French fries. From the feeder road, pappy's looks like a quaint country place but it has an enormous parking lot in the back that was pretty full with cars circling for a spot around 7:30 on a Thursday night. Great place to get your eat on! Family friendly and service is quick. Food is excellent! Portions are huge and fresh. I recommend the baked potato soup, chicken fried steak, the queso and chicken tenders. All piping hot. A great place to have a meal and also works well to clean the pipes if you are a little backed up. I did not check out the restrooms but I can personally say I needed to visit the outhouse about 35 minutes after we left. I would return for sure. So freakin good! read more

What a disappointment. We were looking for an alternative to Chili's because we go there so often, so we tried Pappy's on I10 at Dairy Ashford. My food: The salmon was smelly; very fishy and old tasting with a sauce that was way too sweet. The broccoli was served in one large clump - I've never seen this done before, as if they just chopped a head of broccoli in fourths and served the fourth whole. The smashed potatoes were just ok. My wife's food: Her grilled shrimp also tasted very fishy and tough as though it was old. Her broccoli was at least served in pieces vs. one large clump. Her rice was the best part of the meal. Our son's food: His cheeseburger was the greatest disappointment, andhe loves cheeseburgers plain and dry. The bun was sweet and looked nothing like a hamburger bun. The hamburger meat itself was ok but very salty. The worst cheeseburger he has ever eaten, period. The mac & cheese side was the best part of his meal. Frozen margaritas are $2.50 EVERY DAY!! I like to get the frozen strawberry margarita, which comes in a huge frosty mug. Some of my favorites include the chicken tender basket and french fries. Of all the burgers, the bacon cheeseburger is definitely my top notch and they throw in some fried mushrooms for fun into your french fries. Yummmm! You HAVE to try the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich. It's so sinfully savory in all it's messy glory - grilled chicken breast on a wheat bun covered in swiss cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce tomato, onions, honey mustard, mushrooms and pickles. Yes they fit this all into THE best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Not enough? They have Sunday Brunch (11a-2p) to which I can also speak to. They have the most delectable buttermilk pancakes!! I called to place a to go order and the bartender, Jo Jo was extremely rude. She asked me what I wanted for my sides and I asked her what sides they had and her response was, "we have a lot of sides." She then continued on to say, "if you want to know the sides, read a menu." Really??? I was looking at their online menu, which happens to be pictures, and did not see a list of sides. I was appalled at how rude she was, especially seeing how THAT IS YOUR JOB. I decided not to place an order and hung up. I called back to speak to the manager, Andy, but he didn't seem to care. I would stay far away from this place. Seems like ever ever since the new owners took over a few (7 years back?) it has gone down hill every year since. The chicken tenders are all of half the size they were each year before, the recipes have changed to lower quality ingredients and with all of that said....., yes, the prices have gone up. I've lived in Houston since 1985. I have probably driven by Pappy's more than 500 times, no exaggeration. I never stepped foot into the place until 2015, 30 years later. I can only guess that the flavor on the grill has made the place just that much better because I was happy I finally stopped by the gem on 10. Simplicity, quality, friendliness define the place. The motto above the door states it best, GOOD FOOD. Service was extremely fast and friendly. Drinks were never empty and we had everything we wanted, water, tea, alcohol, food. Everything was done with smiles and quickly. We came fairly close to closing and were welcome with open arms. We ordered the lemon pepper Hawaiian chicken ( a custom thing off the menu which they offered after asking ), the Philly, and the Turkey Artichoke Supreme. The chicken had amazing flavor and then served with that pineapple that just turned spicy into sweet. The philly had some charred beef that was still moist. The Turkey Artichoke was also a good mix of healthy stuff Texas style ( made large and unhealthy). I did not feel as though the meal weighed me down, despite the hefty portion. No, Pappy's is not, like, a 5 star restaurant, but they for sure get 5 stars at executing what they do! It's Texas comfort food. And they ain't playin'. You can get BBQ, Tex-Mex, and then a whole host of other special dishes and your regular mainstay type dishes too. I've had a burger there before (yes, it's worth it to upgrade to the Akaushi beef) and it was phenomenal. I hung at the bar last night and I had the taco salad. I'm not usually a fan of ordering Mexican at a non-Mexican restaurant, but taco salad is like, basically American and it sounded good so I went with it. Great choice! The salsa is actually hot, so this isn't some bland boring American taco salad. Generous amount of chicken and they also provide a little container of queso and ranch. Honestly, I'd totally order the taco salad again. I also want to not the atmosphere at Pappy's. The clientele seemed to be very well balanced between families and then just people from around the neighborhood. I love this place food but I just spent 27 min waiting on a chicken salad. But the guy who ordered after me got the same salad in 10 min. I watched the Bar tender put the guy who was sitting next to me, order in first even tho I gave her my order before him. Her reason was that he got in the restaurant before me which he didn't. But when did coming into a restaurant determined when the bar tender will put in your order? And once I told the owner of the restaurant about the wait, he told me I have to call in. Which I did but they put me on hold and never came back on the line. I was very upset at the reason he gave me, telling me that they get busy and its a lot going on. My sister requested a traditional, American restaurant for her last meal before a summer trip to Japan. I found this place online and decided to give it a try. It has a home-town atmosphere with friendly service and good comfort food. We decided to get an order of the scorpion trails everyone's talking about. They're jumbo shrimp, stuffed inside a jalapeno, stuffed with cheese, covered in breading and fried. They were HOT (we thought they must have left seeds in the jalapeno, but the waiter said they soak the jalapenos in some kind of spicy marinade so they're extra spicy) but delicious. My fiance and sister ordered Bubba's chicken with mac n' cheese, my mom got chicken fried steak with smashed potatoes, and I got the fried catfish with fried okra. All delicious. Will come here again when we're in the mood for comfort food. read more

Well color me surprised, this place was a pleasant surprise. I've visited Pappy's years and years ago and thought it was bleh in the vein of what an independent version of Chili's would taste like or a something equally mundane. Blackeyed Pea on a weak day, for example. I didn't have any plans to go out of my way to come back, but my mother wanted us to meet her and her husband there because they were suddenly obsessed with it. Result: not so bad. Better than I remembered, though not a ton. I will say their burgers are good and the grilled squash is mighty nice. Hubby wasn't a fan of the fries and my kiddo was busy slurping back a milkshake to really comment on his food. My stepdad was all about the steak fingers. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it wasn't so bad. I'm saying a-ok because I won't make a point to go there, but I won't make a big dramatic deal if my mother insists we go there again (and there are some places I will draw the line, for the record, esp if they involve orange cones and no parking). read more

I came here a lot as a child, when it was Spoons. It is very country in here-- from the menu, to the waitress (How are ya'll doin this evenin?) I'm sure there are many delicious offerings among their several page menu--however..the day we went.. -everything was underseasoned and by this I mean it had no salt--and I don't think this place is intentionally trying to offer healthy foods.. --I hve only had one bad hamburger in my life--here at Pappy's. I usually don't order a burger, but was rushed after perusing the whole menu and made a bad decision. It was-very very sweet--with no balance. The bread was sweet enough to call it a breakfast roll, there were bread and butter pickles on it. I guess there are people even here that enjoy a dessert burger..but if you aren't one of them, trust me, don't try to prove me wrong=) I may go back sometime, but I will never order that burger again (and will hesitate with any new burger now haha). read more

The food was all good, not necessarily the best I've ever had- but portions are huge and prices are under $10 for entrees, so in my opinion, pretty darn cheap. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Houston! Southern food at it's finest. It makes all its own salad dressing, which is amazing. They have a little bit of everything on their menu, from tacos to burgers to chicken fried steak to seafood. I always order their chicken strips (with homemade ranch) because they are, in my opinion, the best thing on the menu. Family has told me that the tortilla soup is also the best they've ever had. They also serve old fashioned floats and cinnamon apples. $2.50 margaritas all day every day and the full service bar are just a bonus. The restaurant plays good music and has a nice country atmosphere. Each booth features a picture of a famous Texan. They also always have some sort of sporting event on several TVs throughout the restaurant. My best friend turned me on to this restaurant two years ago and his family has been going there for over ten years. They love it and so do I, which is why I always find excuses to come back. Prices are good for the great food and the service is always impeccable. Even when I came with a large party, we were served quickly. I cannot imagine place I'd rather go eat than Pappy's! Service was very bad....even after we went to the bar to ask for service, no one came to the table for several minutes. We chatted with the table next to us who had also waited a very long time. The manager or someone finally came out and helped us..and the service from him was good...but after all the problems, they didn't do anything to make up for it. The food was OK- some of it very good- but the service was just awful. And managers ought to do some small gesture-- a free drink, a free dessert, to compensate when the service has clearly been as bad as it was for us. Picked this place because it was sorta mid-way between her and I. Definitely a "country-bumpkin" place. Good atmosphere. No seating for guests waiting to be seated other than the bar. tsk tsk. Wednesday is $2.25 on-the-rocks-margaritas! I ordered the chicken fried steak with "texas smashed" mashed potatoes, (which means they had bacon bits and cheese in normal mashed) and green beans. She ordered the Turkey Artichoke Supreme with fries. The CFS was alright. Nothing fancy. Looks huge on the plate but it was pounded quite thin. Good gravy. I would have liked more cheese in my "Texas Smashed" potatoes and the green beans where way over-onioned. Her sandwhich, which she let me try, was amazing! I've had this place bookmarked for a long time and I was really excited to try this place. I'm reading the reviews and I'm wondering if I went to the same place since my visit was such a huge disappointment. We came around the peak end of dinner service but we were able to get a table right away. Our server came by quickly and was reasonably available when we needed her. Our appetizer took some time to come but it was understandable since the restaurant was full and busy. What I dont understand is why the people who came after us and ordered after us (similar dishes and also the same number of people in their party) got their entrees before we did. Also when we did get our entrees about 10 min after, both fried, they were cold and had obviously been ready for sometime based on the fact that everything was soggy and the gravy had congealed and there was a skin on it - at least use a heat lamp or something if theyre going to sit. They offered to reheat it but fried food is gross after its cold and microwaving it just makes it worse. I didnt want to wait another 30 min for a new entree so I just wanted to pay my tab and go. Dinner took an hour but it was mostly just sitting and waiting, the restaurant had emptied by the time we were done. I dont feel like anything tonight warrants a return visit- for food of a similar ilk and at a better price I think Cleburne is far superior. read more
