it's like a blast from the past! good menu selections for family dining and the service was outstanding!

I've lived in the Energy Corridor for over 7 years and finally tried this place last week (and again this past weekend). It's nothing fancy, but the menu is pretty expansive and the food has been delicious and is priced fairly. So far, I have tried the grilled chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries & the grilled chicken taco salad- both YUM. My husband has had the burger and fries & chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes- also YUM (and I don't typically eat battered foods). They also have a full bar with daily drink specials and fair priced drinks in general (seems like everywhere I go charges $12-$15/cocktail these days). I think they are known for a $4 frozen house margarita. This will definitely become one of our go to places and would definitely recommend! read more

Took my family to Pappy's Cafe for the first time. Nice atmosphere and the food was really good. We started with Texas Nachos. Then I had the ribeye for my main course. Good steak and the nachos were very good! We will be back for sure. read more

Update: The food is still good and the service has improved markedly. Sometimes fun to eat at the bar since the bartenders are usually funny. The sewer smell by the door is still there, but the new location will solve that. read more

This place has been around for years and never disappoints. I try something different every time I go and it's always so good, tasty and for lunch the next day because you get ALOT of food. Went here with my son today and did not have a good experience. Ended up leaving without ordering. A two top was seated next to us and received their drinks and had two more people join them and get their drinks before our waitress even came over. She finally took our drink order, returned to plop them down, but did not take our order even though we had our menus closed and were ready. A four top was being seated In the booth next to us. Our waitress proceeded to take their drink orders, return with their drink order, go enter their appetizer order, and THEN came back to take their food order, ignoring us the entire time. She finally came back to our table and after asking for a straw, having waited this entire time, it was only then that I found out that she had brought me a sweet tea and not unsweet tea. Have been to Pappy's at least fifteen times in the last 20 years and the food and service are always very good. Went Yesterday with my daughter who really liked the turkey artichoke sandwich. I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was really good except that the green beans were obviously not fresh. Used to take my daughter here when she was young and I would order two things I liked for us to eat hoping I would be able to finish her leftovers. She was a quick learner and by the time she was about eight she would finish her entire plate. Very disappointing. Bad girl! Second time here and it was as good as the first time! We were a party of 6. We ordered the onion rings, chicken fried steak, ribs, burgers and peach cobbler. The gravy for the chicken fried steak is flavorful and delicious! Not like most gravies that are a bit bland. The onion rings were delicious! I've been wanting to try this place ever since they moved to the new location because it's very close to my house now. Last night I finally did and it was great! I called my order in and a very nice lady took down my order and said it would be ready in 15 min and to call when I pull up and they will bring it out. Pulled up called and someone came out right away with my order. Great friendly service! I got chicken tenders with gravy and chicken quesadillas. Everything was fantastic! They give you like 7 or so BIG pieces of chicken! And the quesadillas were absolutely loaded with chicken fajita and cheese! Thanks for a great experience Pappy's! I always feel like I'm family when I come here. I usually drop by around 4-5pm for a shot, brew, and a meal. Bar staff is always friendly. This is definitely a spot where you can relax and shoot the breeze with the regulars. Everything on the menu is prepared with love and filling but reasonable portions (for me anyway). ProTip: It seems weird, but drop your peanut shells on the floor and not on the counter. It's much easier for the staff to clean up afterward. read more

Great service from the time I walked in to when I left, the manager even checked in on us before we paid the bill. The food was just what you want from a Texas comfort food joint: hot, fresh, and flavorful. We ordered the fried mushrooms, chicken fried steak, Cesar salad, and everything was great till I bit into my burger all the sides were burnt so that's exactly what the entire burger taste like. I was so hungry and skipped breakfast so I ate it all drenched in ketchup. Most definitely will be back but will check the food next time. read more

Tried to make reservations but was told there'd be no issue sitting out party of five immediately. Upon arriving, there were no empty tables and we had to join a waiting list. #1...in bad service. I have tried this place three times since it has moved and yes the food is pretty good but the service is some of the worst in the city. The first time I just marked it up to being in a new location. The second time was like the first but worse. I walk in and of course have to wait five minutes for the hostess to wrap up her conversation with one of the waiters. Then When a waiter does finally take my order they bring out the food incorrect THREE TIMES! Now I just ordered the chicken strips with onion rings (BTW the second best onion rings in Houston, very good) but they still managed to mess it up three straight times, so I just left. Let me add the place was not busy at all, in fact it never seems busy like the previous location, now I know why. So I go back on a Thursday evening...same thing thing. I have to wait at the hostess stand forever, I can see the hostess slumped over chatting with a waiter. Oh well, Ill just sit at the bar, maybe, just maybe it will have better service WRONG! I sit down at the filthy bar, again only two other people there. Its has dirty glasses and dirty dishes stacked up and the bar is full of crumbs and condensation from all of the half drank and abandoned glasses. Again its difficult to get the bartenders attention. I didn't get her name but will describe her later so the owner knows who I'm talking about, if he even cares. I'm at a spot so I can see the TV for the TNF game, I order a Lone Star and she finally drops it off and its warm, I mean basically hot. I tell her and she looks at me like I'm crazy, she walks over to the beer tub and squawks "There all hot!" Then asks if I still want it?? LOL Uhhhh I say No and order something else. I knew i needed to give her my order before she disappeared. Again, chick stripes an onion rings. As I'm taking a napkin and cleaning the bar myself I ask her wheres the bathroom. Its literary next to the bar...so I go to wash my hands from the filth she has going on at the bar. I leave my drink and my utensils there and leave for maybe 60 seconds to wash up. I return and a couple, seemed like regulars are plopped in my place and the lady slides my drink just out of her way(Maybe they chose that spot because it was the only halfway clean at the bar to sit, thanks to me doing her job). So anyway the bartender is yucking in up and taking there order!! Hello!!!! Tell them someone is sitting there and already placed an order!!! So I just shake my head and leave, just to waste more food because of the defective staff they have! I will not be back. Just so ya know the bartender is a short heavy set female with dark hair and way too much eyeliner on...shouldn't be hard to know which one she is. I am not one to favor American food, but I must say this is some of the best Texan food I've ever head. Taste of Texas? Fuhgeddaboudit! This place is truly the most Texan restaurant you'll ever eat at. The food they have is solid, I really enjoyed the chicken fried steak and bourbon ribs. I also thought the creamed spinach and scorpion tails (shrimp in a jalapeno, fried) was excellent. I can also recommend the key lime pie, which is made in season! read more

My 2nd time here. Meet was good but the way they cook it was horrible. I talked to the manager and what an awful customer service. I told the waitress that I should have said something in the beginning but I was too hungry and the waitress did not come sooner. So the manager goes "if you would have said something sooner..." really?! Waitress did not come back right away to check on us and like I said, I was so hungry. That bitterness is all I could taste even when I took the black stuff off. It's bitter all the way...he took off $5. We gave waitress $10 tip to show them that we're not trying to get a free food. But $5?! Really?! I will never come back anymore. Not worth a 20 minutes drive. I'll go back to Outback. They have way better customer service. read more

We have visited Pappys before and have enjoyed each visit. It is easy access off of I-10. The food is good and the restaurant is nice and clean. The staff accommodated our large group by creating seating in the back room. We did sit next to a loud group which made conversation difficult. Our waiter consistently checked in on us and made sure everything was correct. With that said, I did get two sides that I did not order with my meal, but it was quickly corrected. The side I ordered, green beans, were not my favorite because they are cooked with mushrooms. Overall good visit and will go again. read more

We ate here for the first time in many years and were happy we did. Their fried jalapeños are quite addictive. I had the shrimp basket and my husband had a burger. All the food was fresh, hot and delicious. The friendly factor was over the top and our waitress was excellent. We will be back soon. read more

If you have never been here and want a great first time experience, ASK FOR TERRY. He is quick, has worked here forever, and insanely hysterical. Pappy's Daily Specials are always great, this past evening happened to be blackened catfish with crawfish etouffee and my boyfriend ate all of it. A starting salad either house or Caesar was also included. I usually get something from Pappy's Favorites such as their chicken florentine, lemon pepper chicken/catfish or one of their burgers and I've never had any complaints. (Sub for Kobe beef, it's a lot better). For sides, I'd recommend the smash potatoes! Those are so creamy, cheesy, flavorful, and simply delicious. PLEASE SAVE ROOM FOR THE COBBLER BECAUSE THEIRS IS TO DIE FOR. Blackberry cobbler with the ice cream on top is what makes my meal at Pappy's completely. This restaurant is less than a mile from me, as the crow flies. In the twenty years I've lived here I've eaten there perhaps 30 times. That shows I like the place. It also begs the question, why not more often? The food is quite good. It doesn't really matter what you order. It's good home-style cooking and the service is decent. I particularly like the blackened catfish, but I've never been disappointed with any meal I've had here. Even the veggies are good. So, why not four stars? Well, the parking can be a bit difficult because the place is so popular. They really don't have enough parking spaces for the size of the restaurant. Also, I find the seating a bit cramped, as there are booths and I'm usually sitting with my back a few inches from the back of another person. The kicker, though -- the reason I cannot give this place four stars, is that they often have Fox News playing on one or more of the televisions. To me, this is unacceptable. Management must know that, even though this is in an upscale, conservative area of town, there are many people who do not share the philosophies espoused on this excuse of a network. Last night the television in the seating area where I was had Fox News playing. My wife politely offered to take the seat facing the the television to spare me from torment. I, however, was faced with the task of keeping her entertained so she was spared from either torment or unwilling indoctrination to conservative propaganda. I managed. So, if you a a climate-change denier, a person who fears having too many illegal aliens around, or a person who wants to tell women what they can and can't do with their bodies, you will enjoy both a good meal and hearty entertainment at this restaurant. This place is so good, and it's been around so long, it's hard to believe no one else has reviewed it before. Pappy's is not a 5 star restaurant per se, but it's 5 stars for what it is - a great neighborhood restaurant with great food at good prices. I know it, the cops who eat here all the time know it, and now Yelpdom knows it. Pot roast, ribeye steaks, burgers, fried shrimp, seafood specials, and sandwiches are all fanstastic, with generous size servings which can often be spit between 2 people... I've never had a less than excellent meal here. Great salads and fresh veggies too. They have food and drink specials everyday and did I mention $2 margaritas all day every day? Oh yeah. The margs are a little sweet but they definitely have a tequila kick to them. And for $2, 'nuff said. And Shiner black on tap with a full bar and tvs for watching sports. They also feature a kickass special key lime pie which is more like a key lime cheesecake. Eat here and order the key lime pie, even if you can't finish it.. thank me later. read more

Bring on the greasy spoons.... Yesterday was my first visit to Pappy's after hearing about several times. The place is very quaint and the service was outstanding - very impressed with the personality of our waiter. The food was part home-style cooking, part tex-mex and part burgers, but the mix worked nicely and everyone in my group ordered something totally different. Oh Pappy's, hidden off of the feeder road you are easily overlooked. But once found you are a great place to get great American classics. The menu boasts about 6 pages of baked, grilled and fried foods (mostly fried foods). They even have a Sunday brunch served 11am - 2pm at reasonable prices. The bottomless mimosa's are limited to a maximum of 4. What? How does that make them bottomless? They offer a smaller portion to their entrees which comes sans the dinner salad. I opted for the chicken tenders basket and substituted coleslaw for the fries. The chicken tenders were quite good with a nice crunchy batter, it is served with gravy and honey mustard. I found the honey mustard a better pairing over the gravy, which was the typical country white variety. The coleslaw was tangy and crunchy and a nice respite from a fully fried basket. My dinner date had the full entree with the fried okra as a side. The okra was crunchy and slime free, quite yummy. The dinner salad was a surprise, a nice small portion, fresh produce and great croutons. The staff is friendly and efficient without being obtrusive and they do not mind if you want to make substitutions. Will have to go back to try the brunch as one of the eggs benedict has asparagus and spinach instead of the ham. I wonder if they will notice if I have 5 mimosas? read more

My first time here so I'm rating everything 1-5 5 being the best 1. Decor- A 2 it's a little outdated but it has "character". 2. Food- A 5 I thoroughly enjoyed my food (lemon pepper grilled catfish, sautéed spinach, Texas mashed potatoes). Everything was excellent. I even sampled my brothers Bubba's chicken, which is a 5 by itself. I also sampled my sister's chicken florentine. ..awesome. 3. Service- A 5 the waitress named Kris was excellent. She was super attentive despite the restaurant was busy and she was working a double shift. She took the time to talk to us and make sure we had a wonderful experience. Overall a strong 4.
