Very good Taqueria in the North Side! Sup Doug Y my favorite old North Sider! I love places like this, small nothing glitzy or fake not a hint of pretentiousness! The cool antique photos on lining the wall, entice one to play where's Waldo for Pancho Villa. I wanted to speak with the owner and find if these were decorations or family heirlooms. I get all Big Fish here and imagine the grandiose stories, hoping that a distant relative rode with Pancho! Befriending of the owner will have to wait for now my hopes for conversation about the photos and the tales hopefully surrounding them, they simply are to busy for chit chat. The salsa with the comp chips was great I actually asked for a side of it to put on Milanese Torta which also very tasty! Not the best Torta ever, but definitely worth going back to get again. I became the proverbial food sampler here and asked for a bit of everyone's food at my table and have to say that every item on our table was very good! There is nothing over the top and Taqueria Patxcuarro, the decor is minimal the space is small but the food is very very good and the staff is very attentive. I will be back soon, not only for the food but on a quest to see if there are any stories to go with the pictures that decorate the walls! read more

My wife and I went to Taqueria Patzcuaro this weekend based on reviews here on Yelp. Overall, we thought it was a fantastic place, very authentic and the food was delicious and super-quick. Much like older establishments in the 32nd and Zuni area, the outside of the restaurant is about as appealing as a county jail. Bars on the smallish windows and a dark, nondescript exterior. However, the interior is very welcoming and actually has a great layout - one flat screen TV on the far wall provides entertainment without being distracting. The staff is really friendly and prompt. The service reminds me of our recent honeymoon in Cancun - everything moves at top speed. For those not accustomed, it may feel a bit pushy, but rest assured that their objective is to get you drinking and eating as quick as possible. As is tradition, they start you off with chips and salsa, though it's a somewhat spicy (and tasty) salsa verde rather than salsa cruda or jarred salsa. The menu is somewhat hard to read due to layout and printing, but it doesn't detract from the offerings. They have some very Mexican offerings (beef cheek meat tacos, Menudo, etc) but also have a solid core of traditional American favorites like enchiladas and the ilk. I was very satisfied with my steak tacos and my wife definitely thought the chicken enchiladas were tops - the green chile is out of control good. As far as drinks go, I thought the margaritas were pretty close to spot-on. Definitely not made from entirely fresh juices, it still didn't taste as sweet as I expected and was plenty strong to boot. One item to note is the sodas are not the standard free refill deal, which might be a consideration for kids. Given the prices, this place is a steal. Our tab was especially light considering the two margaritas and a Corona we ordered. The only thing that dropped my rating to a four was that we were presented with the check without asking for it. We were planning on watching the soccer game and having another margarita or two, but it seemed like the server was ending his shift and the service had slowed down markedly, so we decided to take this as as sign and bail. However, all said, we plan to frequent Taqueria Patzcuaro and bring our friends as often as possible. 5 stars for food, drinks and price and 4 stars for service. read more

I love Mexican food and Patzcuaro satisfies. We went last week and I had the camorones el patzcuaro, spicy shrimp in a broth of tomatoes, onion, potatoes with a kick, I like food that is not afraid to be spicy, this was great. My partner had the combination plate with a enchilada, relleno and tostada that was equally gratifying, he loved the green chili. The house margaritas unbelievably big glasses for 4.50. You can't miss the house made, yes house made horchata that comes in another huge serving, so much that we actually took ours to go but the flavors will remind you of your childhood so perfectly delicious. I have taken different people here on several occasions and all have at some point during our meals said, "This is great!" with a mix of surprise and true enthusiasm. One of my friends even told me he didn't really like Mexican food, but the food here has converted him. The guacamole is fantastic and I love the spicy salsa and homemade chips. I usually order the chillies rellanos, one soft and one crispy, for a bit of variety. The huge, on the rocks margaritas are very good and are not overpriced or watered down as they are at some other places. I ordered a chillies rellanos sandwich once, it was good, but difficult to eat. Chillies are much easier to eat with a knife and fork. They have other sandwich options, which are probably much easier to eat and certainly quite tasty. read more

I may not look like I can eat a lot, but that's no reason to refrain from offering a second basket of tortilla chips. Don't make me beg, please! Went here today for lunch and here is why I am rating with two stars instead of more: 1) I ordered the Enchiladas Patzcuaro and although I scraped my plate clean, I would have liked there to be more spice available...even if that meant the server came back around so I could ask for some more salsa (because that stuff is SPASTY) 2) We eventually ASKED for more chips, but they never showed up at our table. I got the impression that they wanted us out of there, as their lunch crowd was filing in. What they didn't know was my ability to INHALE chips and salsa, so at most, we would have been there an additional 5 minutes. 3) I left hungry. And proceeded to eat the apple I had in my bag on the walk to the car. Now, sometimes I like being content and not overstuffed when leaving restaurants. But hungry?! FEED ME PATZCUARO! I remember the food tasting better. Maybe it's that I don't usually order the enchiladas. Hmm. I have been coming here frequently for over 3 years to get the daily lunch special, for $6 you can't beat chips, their fantastic house-made salsa (pretty hot!), a bottomless soft drink, and a delicious main dish that varies between pork adovada, tacos al carbon, puntas ala mexicano (my favorite), and several others. Even the rice and beans by themselves are very good. Order a side of pico de gallo with the tacos al carbon and mix your taco with the guacamole, their salsa, the pico, a touch of lime juice, and it's pretty out of this world. The rest of the menu is very consistent and very-very good, I love the bistek, the tampiquena, and the burritos and tacos are all very good. Anything smothered with their green chile is a winner, and I think they do an especially good job with their soft corn tortillas. Prices have gone up slightly in the last year (the lunch special used to be a ridiculously cheap $5...) but it's still pretty reasonable. It's family owned and run, and they take a lot of pride in running a place that frequently makes you want to lick your plate clean. :) read more

Decent Mexican food and hands down the BEST worst service in the country! Denver should be proud. Been here a baker 's dozen times, and they have the best salsa in Denver if you like it hot! They are amazingly consistent at sucking with service though...it's never been good. I'll keep coming for the salsa but if you're looking for good Mexican food you can find it somewhere else. In their defense the bad service is bad enough that I suspect they put some effort into it, so maybe it's one of those places... Oh yeah, the last time we came they had to halt margarita sales because they had maxed out their daily amount and they forgot to put some of their beers on ice so you had to get them warm if you wanted Mexican beer...therefore if you want Margaritas come in the morning and unless you're British and like warm beer bring your own cooler with ice (don't worry they take so long your beer will have time to get cold). read more

Reliable is how I would describe Patzcuaro's. I have been going occasionally since I moved to Cowtown back in 2001 and it is very consistently... reliable. Salsa is tasty, fresh and has some legit heat. Tacos are all pretty good if unspectacular. Margaritas and Seafood entress are pretty good too. Is it amazing? Among the best Mexican in Denver? In my opinion, no. But still worth visiting, and I will again when I find myself over in that part of town. read more

I love this place. I have loved it since I started coming here before Nuggets games at McNichols Arena with my family in the mid-80's. It's still family owned and operated and you can tell because the same friendly servers who took care of you in 1985 do so today, just with a few more grey hairs. I'd also venture a guess that prices have crept up far slower than the annual rate of inflation as you can still feed a family of four here EASILY for under $50. Haven't changed the decor or menu, haven't tried to incorporate the latest culinary trends into what they do, they just continue to offer good, honest authentic Mexican cuisine at basement prices. It's too bad that Denver's local culinary writers are on to this place, because now you sometimes have to fight for a table at busy times. But I shouldn't be selfish and I should be happy that this family-run business is making good after all these years by making us feel so good. This place is just great. It's a small whole-in-the-wall kinda restaurant that seems to be mostly family run, which I love. I live close, so I've been watching the construction on the outdoor patio and can't for it to be ready! Inside, seat yourself and they immediately bring you fresh chips (still warm) and salsa (which has some zing!). I've loved everything I've ordered and the green chili is phenomenal. Comes covered and smothered on most dishes. (My fav is the Puntas a la Mexicana.) I could rave on about the $5 margaritas, the unbelievable cantaloupe liquado, or the divine sopapillas, but I think you should check it out for yourself! I guarantee you'll have a delicious meal. My husband and I come here and always always always get their queso (probably the best I've had around town), and carnitas burritos... Not to mention $5.50 for a large FRESH (none of that syrup premix crap) tasty Margarita. This is my favorite neighborhood Mexican, and I pick this place over Tacos Jalisco, which gives me stomach pains the rest of the day... or over Jack N' Grill, or even over Lo Loma. Man, white people love this place!!! It's pretty good. Their salsa is great and their entrees are hit and miss. I had their enchiladas and wasn't that impressed. Rice and beans were average. Rellenos were pretty good. Their tacos don't even come close to touching the tacos at the Mexican Taqueria less than a block away. I always look forward to Patzcuaro's when I'm in Denver. As a Faerie Princess, I don't eat a lot of spicy fare, so when I go I indulge in the Enchiladas Rojas, which come with rice and beans. I also get queso and chips and, of course, a margarita. Yum. Love it. I'm very happy with their margaritas. I like the house margs better than the top shelf margs here. Frog Prince says the tacos albinil and the strawberry licuado are the best. After the new patio opened, the service seemed to get friendlier too. Good food, that's it. Menu consists of tex-mex with a few more authentic mexican entrees for the more adventurous. As a U.S. American, I stick with the U.S. American Mexican entrees. Food here is pretty legendary and extremely consistent. I've never had something bad there. Don't leave that place without getting the sophapillas. My only complaint is the styrofoam takeout boxes. That being said, I suspect the single, salad-eating, wanting to be seen, seven jeans wearing, Lola loving, SUV driving, boyfriend ordering, out of shape but skinny girl wouldn't be a fan since there would be no one there she could make dirty faces at or talk shit about. Patzcuaro's was originally recommended to me by my real-estate agent when moving into the Highlands. He said, and I quote, "it's the best mexican place in town." I was a little iffy on that statement since I have been a connoisseur of mexican food since I was in the womb and I'm pretty confident in my taste for great mexican. Its definitely not the BEST. Giving it a shot, I tried the place out with some family and all of us were "meh" about most things in the meal. The chips and salsa of all things were a highlight. The "famous" margaritas were ok, but again, nothing to write home about. The enchiladas were nothing that I couldn't make at home. So all in all, it's good, but it's not amazing. The successful Grays and Torreys hikers were hungry and needing food. Mexican seemed like a good decision for a gluten-free person. We hunted Patzcuaro's via Yelp. I knew this neighborhood had good Mexican, but I needed to pinpoint where. We found easy parking across from Spuntino and quickly found a seat. Patzcuaro's staff was friendly and helpful. We started with a large helping of guacamole. It was creamy smooth with a touch of lime, I think. It was addictive. Fortunately, they kept the chips coming. Be aware that their basic salsa is slightly spicier than what you might consider medium. I ordered the Carne a la Tampiquena which came with an enchilada (choice of wheat or corn tortilla), beans, some rice, and four strips of carne asada. The carne asada tastes great also with some lime and reheats well. I ate too much guacamole, but enjoyed what I could of my main entree. Overall, I enjoyed the restaurant. They accommodate gluten-free dietary restrictions, serve great chips, and feature good food. read more

Instead they all work the entire restaurant which in theory works well...patrons are always taken care of. I don't like this approach as they ask us the same things over and over. And are forgetful. Yum yum yum yum! This was some delicious food in a restaurant that is a Northside institution. The restaurant itself is a little small and has a ramp up to the front door which is very steep and narrow. it kind of took us a while to place our orders, but the kitchen must move at light speed because we got our food very quickly. So don't lose hope! The chips are free, the salsa is spicy and the guacamole is awesome. I got enchiladas which were tasty. Husband got Carnitas Michoacan. I don't like pork but after I got a taste of his dish he had to eat fast to keep me away. Wow! The regular margarita wasn't very strong, but it was VERY tasty (and it was a school night, so really not strong was for the best). Wow!! I use to come here when I was younger and it was so delicious. Fast forward to 18yrs later now that I'm back in CO and this place continues to be as delicious, if not even more so now. My favorite plates are the carne adobada, plato de chile verde, fajitas and the menudo is to die for. The service is excellent!! All the servers are super nice and attentive. The carnitas here is (almost) perfection, the margs and green chile are delicious. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu here. It had been a while since I had been to the Patzcuaro's that i loved. That little hole in the wall joint that seemed to be hiding within the landscape of 32nd Avenue. Since then, it has expanded, gotten less hidden and developed a monstrosity of a growth on the front facade in the form of the restaurant's name. That being said, the food and margs are good. But for some reason, the lack of the hole in the wall vibe has taken the flavor away. And the crowds of people make it less enjoyable because now it's just another stop on the journey of Mexican food in Denver. The disappointment is real, my friends. If you are looking for a good meal, I suggest a hole in the wall on Federal. If you are looking to fill your stomach, then I could recommend Patzcuaro's through the tears of another lost treasure. read more

I doubt I can say anything about this place that hasn't already been said, but I have to put my two cents in at least. This is currently my favorite Mexican restaurant in Denver. (okay, maybe tied with La Loma) The ambiance is authentic and laid back, they've got the big screen TV up front, usually with a futbol game running. The staff is all smiles and the menu is amazing. To keep aligned with my rating scale, the chips and salsa are not where this restaurant shines in my opinion. The chips are good, if you like the thin and crispy variety. The salsa is green, and SPICY. A little bit too spicy for my tastes, this is where I'll order guacamole right out of the gate. They get a 7 on chips and salsa. (at least it's free!) Their margaritas are huge and delicious. Just the right mix of ingredients and plenty of them. They get an 9 on margaritas. On to the main event, their green chili and associated burrito may be the best in town. The Carbone Burrito specifically was a perfect mix of marinated steak and onions, literally dripping with flavor. The supreme version of the burrito came with plenty of sour cream and guacamole to satisfy. They nailed a perfect 10 score here and is the reason why we keep coming back. Of course now I'm stuck with the age old problem: do you stick with what you love, or venture out to try something new. Sometimes it works, sometimes I regret it. Patcuaro's has been a favorite of mine since moving to the neighborhood 5 years ago. The service is always friendly and the food is great. A couple of favorites are the chili relleno burrito (not too greasy and quite filling) and the horchata. Last night we tried out the patio for the first time. It seems like it took them a year to build the thing. The atmosphere is great. It is open and airy, but still cozy. Plus, the water fountains and trees add a nice feel to it all. We plan to be there a lot this summer. read more

I love the food here and the service is always great. This little place has improved with the neighborhood. I was out of the state for a couple years and I almost didn't recognize it when I returned. However, the food is still excellent and the salsa is still spicy (I hate bland salsas like at Blue Bonnet). I always get the Carnitas here. They are excellent. I also love the horchata. My stepdad loves the menudo on the weekends. In addition, they are accommodating to children and babies, which is a plus. This is the epitome of a Mexican dive with FANTASTIC food. Patzcuaro's (Pahts-KWAH-roh) has been in the neighborhood forever and is family owned and operated. Immediately upon being seated you're served with homemade chips and a delicious smooth-type salsa. Pico de gallo is available as a side for extra, as is their excellent guacamole salad. The service is super friendly and relaxed. Nothing is bad on the menu: my favorites are Tacos Carbon (strips of marinated steak with tomato and onion) or the Enchiladas Rojas (cheese enchiladas in a mild red sauce). Don't miss the delicious cantaloupe juice, served up in enormous icy cold stainless steel for only about $2.50. They also have strawberry and other juices. The tacos with steak, potato and jalapeno are so good... I love their fruit drinks here too and eating surrounded by black and white photos of Mexican revolutionaries. When it comes to Mexican, I am very picky about being a "regular" customer. There are key components that it must contain. There are so many of these around, there has to have a perfect combination of the following: 1) Great food (Entrees, chips/salsa) 2) Inexpensive 3) Great Margaritas Patzcuaros has 2/3 of these in the bag. Their food was great (I had the Fajitas and my partner had the Carnitas). It was very reasonably priced. The staff did a good job as well. Their margaritas are GOOD, but not GREAT... and this is my only knock. The margs could be better. We will be coming here again, but I'm not totally convinced this is a regular spot for me. It's also tough to be a regular when it's a pain to find a place to park (street parking), yet that isn't Patzcuaros fault. Overall, I give it a 4/5. It is definitely worth giving a visit. (As a disclaimer, the only Mexican restaurant I'd give a 5/5 would be Los Dos Potrillos, as it has all 3 components. La Loma would be close at a 4.5/5, but their margaritas are very expensive, but really good, and the food is incredible.) read more

Stopped in today for lunch with two co-workers. I ordered Carnitas Michoacan and my co-workers had Bistek a la Mexicana & Milanesa con Papas. The food definitely was not fresh as it was delivered to our table within two minutes of ordering it. My co-workers and I all agree that the food tasted several days old. Being from Texas, patios are ubiquitous with Mexican restaurants. Or I guess Tex-Mex as we have mainly in the South. There is a certain criteria at which I judge the classic Mexican restaurant. 1)Patio 2) Margarita 3) Queso. The Highlands Neighborhood has a lack of great patios. This patio is probably one of the best in the area. It is a nice shaded patio with sounds of little waterfalls and Mexican music. The Margs are good and are sold by the goblets at which I'm a fan of. The queso is pretty tastey as well. Reminds me of the creamy velveeta tex-mex queso that we get back home. Patio, Queso, and Margs...you can't go wrong. I recommend. read more
