Food Came straight here after our 3 hr drive from LA, craving a really good brunch spot. Haven't been here before but this was one of the recommended spots, so decided to give it a try. We ordered a corned beef hash and the Paula's special pancakes. The food was really good and hit the spot. The corned beef hash with eggs were well made and not overly salty, and the pancakes were dutch pancakes which lean on the thinner side with some fresh fruit(we picked strawberries). Overall, we enjoyed the food and nothing really much to complain. Service/Ambiance For a Friday 10am brunch for 2 people, waiting was around 15-20 mins which wasn't too bad. We were given outdoor seating, but overall the place had a lot of tables. The servers were nice and service was pretty quick as well. Loved the vibe of the place and the outdoor seating really gives your european vibes with the solvang cityscape
GETTING HERE: Located in Solvang, on the main drag through the city. Per their website, they are on the north side of Mission Drive between 4th Place and 5th Street. Parking can be ridiculous, just FYI. I would probably recommend looking straight off for a public parking lot if you're headed here. To maximize your time. REVIEW: First-timers. Sadly, we were completely underwhelmed. Very saddened by this. But, as is my motto, we will give them one more try as hoping this was a one-off. Food: The pancakes were OK? I mean, I didn't see the hype. Again, marking this up to the one-off visit, hopefully. They were good, of course, but didn't seem any different than from other restaurants. We ordered eggs over-medium, and they were runny. But, nothing terribly major. Service: Now, here's the bad news. Our service was horrid. Just horrid. But, as we observed the other customers, their service was on point. Servers and wait staff were hustling, just not for us. It was so unnerving. Finally, who I can only assume was a lead/manager, came to greet us and take our order. She apologized profusely and stated that our server had gotten held up with something. She was pretty helpful, thankfully, but then it was another server who delivered our food and she. did. not. even. say. boo. to. us. Ambiance: It's very quaint, I love it. Very Solvang-rich. Overall, it was a solid 2.5 visit, rounding up because Solvang. Hopefully, will update soon with better experience.
Long wait but worth it! Visited on a Saturday for some late morning breakfast. I expected it to be busy so we had about a 45 minute wait. Once seated we were served quickly and the servers were on top of things. Considering how busy it was everyone was nice and we were never waiting long to be helped. The dining room feels like an old house which I just love. We both got the California special omelette with bacon and Danish sausage on the side. The omelette's were so good, fluffy, big, lots of flavors. The pico and ranchero sauce were perfect on top. The bacon was crispy and thick, the Danish sausage was delicious but could have been a bit warmer. We also got mimosas which were so fresh, they use fresh squeezed orange juice made right there in the dining room. I'd go back just for the orange juice alone! All in all a great dining experience before shopping around town. The meal hit the spot and was worth the wait.
Rounded up to 3.75 stars. We arrived to Paula's Pancake House on mother's Day morning at around 8:30am (they open at 7) and we were told it was a 45 minute wait. It's not a very big place and there isn't really much space to wait but people did start forming a line outside waiting to put their name down. You put your name down on a list and are told to return around a specific time frame. They do not offer texting when your place is open so you can't really travel very far. Service: The service there was fair. Understandably so, it was busy and our server didn't come around to us often while we ate. But she was kind and accommodating to our specific dietary needs (without making any faces). Food: so we came with a party of 7 so they accommodated us by joining two tables together. The food we had was okay. My favorite thing there was definitely the danish sausage which was cooked perfectly and had the perfect snap and bite to it. My sister in law said it was too gamey for her but I believe that is just a personal preference. The sausage was well cooked. The danish pancakes were just alright.... I like to think of them more like a crepe since they are relatively thin. We got ours with blueberries and the blueberries were also cooked well. It was lacking in flavor is all I can describe it. The scrambled eggs has absolutely zero salt. I believe they just cooked the eggs and brought it out. Overall I would say this place was underwhelming and I could not for the life of me understand why it gets so jam-packed. In my humble opinion. I think there just aren't that many options of full menu restaurants in Solvang and a lot of bakeries instead. I would come back here again just for the danish sausage since it was quite delicious but next time I'll try another menu item.
It's a nice place to stop because it's nostalgic. The flavor is okay. Pancakes and waffles are awesome! Needed to add salt and pepper to eggs. The waitress was great attentive as much as she could. It's busy place definitely need to get there early extremely early to not have to wait 45min especially with an infant. The place is loud but not enough to yell over each other but loud. I want to say everytime I've been inside due to weather but outside may be different. Overall I suggest to try on own.
First time at Paula's, the Danish pancake stood out right away. It was large and thin, almost crepe like, but packed with flavor. It was genuinely delicious, my son loved it and we finished it quickly. The eggs and sausage on the side were solid as well. We also ordered the country fried steak, which was just as good. Crispy, flavorful, and satisfying without feeling overly heavy. Parking takes a little effort. Street spots can be hit or miss, but there is public parking nearby. The location is also super convenient if you're planning to stop by the Olesons. Service was friendly, and the whole experience felt immersive, like stepping into a small piece of Danish culture.
I will admit this place was quite good. I came for lunch but ordered the Danish pancake with blueberries because why not? Breakfast for lunch, right? Anyways, it was my first time trying Danish pancakes and I enjoyed it! The pancake was thin, almost crepe like. The fruit added that nice touch of berry sweetness to it. While large, I devoured this like there was no tomorrow. After my visit here, I keep thinking about what a wonderful meal I had. The restaurant has a fun vibe and fits perfectly with the Danish town feel.

I was inspired to come here after seeing it on a few different social media channels. I was camping a few miles away from here and decided to stop by before heading home. I got here around 8AM on a Thursday and there was already a line. Since I was solo, I sat at the counter. Service was great. All the waitresses were very attentive and friendly. The Danish pancakes were absolutely delicious! Kinda sucks I paid $20 for 2 pancakes and a cup of coffee. Nevertheless, I was very happy with my meal and I'd absolutely come back in the future.
Read this was the place to eat breakfast if in Solvang. It didn't disappoint. Delicious breakfast. The Dutch pancakes are kinda like crepes. They were good. The sausage was sort of like a mild Italian sausage. Early in the morning they were already busy but we got there early enough to be seated right away. The service was good and friendly. The setting was nice. Made you really feel that Dutch heritage. Defiantly give this spot a try. If you're wondering why 4 stars instead of 5, it's mainly because overall it was a typical regular breakfast. That's literally the only reason. But the place is great! Get there early because when my wife and I left and walked around a little bit there was a crowd outside waiting to be seated. They get busy fast!
I'm a big fan of this location! The vibe is very old-school, and you can really taste the Solvang spirit in their food. It's wonderful. I went with my best friend, and he's extremely picky about his breakfast, but he truly loved the breakfast here. They made the eggs perfectly! He's still trying to recreate them at home, but he can't get them to taste the same lol. The breakfast here is really good. I got the Danish pancakes and they were so good! I was hesitant because I usually love regular pancakes, but these were even better, nice and airy, not too thick, and with just enough flavor to make you happy. We also got their mimosa special for two. They gave us these personal champagne bottles, which was so cute! We got to pop them open ourselves and pour them. It made the whole experience feel a little extra fun. The only reason I'm docking a star is because they don't accept reservations, and the wait time is at least an hour outside ( we waited an hour an 15 mins) in the blazing sun. The hostess managing the waitlist was also pretty crabby. At one point she closed the waitlist because there were too many people waiting for a seat. That said, once we were inside, the service was polite and the food came out quickly. We honestly spent way longer waiting outside than we did actually sitting down and eating, which was a little annoying. But overall, the food is top notch and definitely worth trying if you're in the area.

A traditional Danish breakfast in a traditional Danish town, or at least a very good facsimile. Traditional diner vibe. Got the Danish pancakes with blueberries, danish sausage and mimosas just because. Food was tasty. Wait staff was pleasant. Lots of regulars as well as tourists like us. Outdoor as well as indoor seating. Decent fare at a reasonable price. read more

Paula' Pancake house did not disappoint. Had a home cooked feeling to it. Dog Friendly! Inside and outdoor seating. Prompt service. Had the Danish pancakes with fruit: yummy! Eggs were really good. The pups has some sausage patties and they were not disappointed. Located right on the main street so if you like people watching the outside patio is for you. Very cute breakfast/lunch spot. We went on a Tuesday at noon and we're easily able to get a seat outside on the patio. It's walking distance from everything in Solvang, and right next door to a pastry shop for your post breakfast treat. The service was great and our server was very friendly. I tried the house specialty -Danish Pancake Combo! I really liked the slightly vanilla taste. The fresh squeezed orange juice was small but delicious. read more

When we arrived it was a 30 minute wait. It was the Friday morning influx of new tourists. We checked out the bakery next door in the interim. There is indoor/outdoor seating. This is an obviously popular eatery! I believe it was just under half an hour when we were seated inside at 2 separate tables next to each other. Our server Diana took care of the 4 of us at the round table. We all enjoyed our meals, which came out rather quickly despite how busy it was. Everybody else at the other table were happy with their food and the service. No wonder it's popular here. We will make it a point to return here again. read more
I came here with my bestie, and the service was great ... but the fries tasted like they were just thrown into a bunch of bad oil!!! The burger had no salt or flavor unfortunately! I had to add salt to my patty and the buns tasted really weird! It was an affordable place but I wouldn't come here again! I probably would order the pancakes next time if I do come! We sat outside on the patio with our dog. They make good use of their outside space and have lots of umbrellas and heaters. The food was good, but the highlight of our meal was the pancakes. Literally the best pancakes we've ever had!! We even bought the pancake mix to make them at home. The service is good, but just be prepared for a long wait to be seated because of it's popularity and they don't do a text to return. read more

Delicious pancakes here! I got Paula's Special with cinnamon apples on top and they were so good! The pancakes are huge, but nice and thin. Almost like a cross between an American pancake and a crepe. read more

Come early because it does get packed all the time even on a random weekday! My personal go-to will always be a corned beef hash but don't leave without trying their pancakes and danish sausages, make sure you're with a group of people who order those. I was :) Everything tasted great, the vibe was energetic and service was quick and easy. Definitely the go-to breakfast place to fuel you for a long day of walking around the town! read more

I am so glad we were recommended to come here when stopping through. Our food was absolutely fantastic, the portions were amazing for the price. All of the women working were so sweet and made sure our coffee was filled at all times. If we stop back through we will most definitely come back! I cannot recommend this place enough. read more
On Sunday there was an extremely long line so we decided to come yesterday on Labor Day Monday after our hike and we got lucky and only had to wait about 5 minutes or so. It is a tiny place and tables are squeezed together tightly and they are of lower grade quality. However, the food is of really high quality and so is the staff. These could very well be the best buttermilk pancakes I've ever had. My eggs were done perfectly and the bacon came as I requested, crispy. Granted, food always tastes better after a hike, but that was amazing! read more

After two separate trips to Solvang and three attempts, I've FINALLY eaten at Paula's Pancake House. It's always crowded but finally lucked out with timing and got the last two bar seats. It's a diner vibe with quick service. I got the Irish Benedict and it was fine (albeit an art piece). The coffee was good. Our server was friendly but the hostess was pretty dismissive to people and had a general "I don't want to be here" vibe. Each time we I've tried to eat here the wait has been approximately 30 minutes and they don't take reservations. They do have outdoor seating but will only turn the heaters on once someone says they are willing to sit outside, which gives the allure that outside isn't really an option. By the time we left, the patio was full and very toasty, so I'd recommend sitting outside even if it's cold if offered. All in all, this place is a decent diner but I don't understand why it's always so crowded. I'd go again but it isn't a place that I feel strongly about one way or another. read more

Worth the wait! What I ate: - Country fried steak and eggs: Well cooked, this was exactly what you would expect. The country fried steak was crispy, breaded, fried to perfection and covered in country gravy. Eggs were light and fluffy. Hash browns were crispy and cooked well. - Biscuit and gravy: My meal came with a carby side, and I opted for a biscuit with a side of gravy. While tasty, and fluffy, not the best biscuit I've ever had. But that gravy was perfection. I could feel it immediately sludging its way through my arteries. - Paula's danish pancakes: It had been a long long time since I've had these, and I had forgotten how good they were. Thinner than a regular pancake, but it somehow magically retained the fluffiness. Got these with fresh strawberries and cream and our table demolished these. Pros: - All the food we ordered was perfect breakfast food. - Menu was pretty standard with all your typical breakfast foods, but if you were in the mood for lunch, I saw they had sandwiches and burgers as well. - Staff was quick and efficient - Fresh squeeze OJ - Those danish pancakes were really amazing. Pro tip, definitely just order a plate of these for everyone at the table to share. - Food came out quick. We were all pretty shocked at the speed our food came out, but we also appreciated it. Turn around was really quick. - Next to Olsen's bakery, you could always wait in line for Olsen's to get yourself a snack before eating at Paula's while you wait for your table Cons: - Yea, that wait is pretty atrocious. We came in on a Saturday morning around 10ish and waited a little more than an hour for a table for 3. If you need children or adults who need to eat in a timely manner, maybe bring them a snack to tide them over. Though it was a long wait, the staff really hustle hard to make turn around really quick - Parking in Solvang can be hit or miss. Plenty of street parking. There were a few dedicated spots right in front of the restaurant. We ended up parking a few blocks down - No where to really wait. The 2 shops right next to the restaurant were busy with people walking in to browse while they waited for their table. They didn't allow anyone to linger and wait in their dedicated patio areas, and we were shooed to the sidewalk to stand and wait. There was a complimentary breakfast at the Wine Valley Inn, but I really wanted to eat out, and try Paula's. My late sister was named Paula, so I just felt she was telling me to eat here. LOL! We got there at 7:30, and there was no one on the patio, but a number of tables inside. One of the workers came out and turned on two heaters for us, which was very nice. Our server was really sweet, and didn't mind Cako at all. The coffee was good! I think it's a commercial brand, but if you get it first thing in the morning, it's fresh! ;) I ordered Paula's combo with Danish pancakes, eggs scrambled, and bacon. I also ordered an almond pastry and a side of bacon, because you can never have too much bacon...LOL! The partner in crime ordered a muffin, bacon and eggs with hash browns, and a biscuit. The muffin and biscuit weren't so good, but everything else was hot and tasty. As we sat there eating, and figuring out when we were going to leave, it started to get busy. The patio filled up pretty quick, except for a family that came and left because, "there wasn't chocolate milk on the menu" for their daughter. Dang, who's the adult in that family? LOLLLLLL! Apparently a Solvang staple and it seems to always be busy in the mornings. We came by on a Monday morning and still had to to join a waitlist. Luckily the wait was only about 15 minutes and we were seated inside. Menus were given upon being seated and a server came by to get drink orders. I decided on the Danish pancake with cinnamon apples and hubby got the waffle with whipped cream and strawberries. A Danish pancake tastes like a regular pancake but it's large and spread thin. The food came out in a timely manner and coffee cups were refilled periodically. The food and service were fine. I think it's more of a novel experience, to be sitting in one of Solvang's older restaurants. The interior is still vintage and I like establishments that keep it that way. read more
One of my all-time-favorite breakfast places. Don't know how many times I've eaten here, but been a customer for more than 20 years, so it's a lot. The thing to order here is the Danish Pancake Special, and I'm gonna explain why. I need to explain because they have regular Buttermilk pancakes on the menu here, and in my opinion it would be a Huge Mistake to order those. The Danish Pancakes are the Specialty of the house here. Danish pancakes are really thin, kinda like crepes. They're also huge, and two of them come in an order. They're dusted with powdered sugar, topped with a little fruit garnish, and served up hot with a little syrup on the side. The Danish Pancake Special comes with 2 eggs and your choice of Meat. If you want to go full on Euro, go with the Danish Sausage as your meat choice. It's a really authentic Danish style breakfast sausage. Personally I prefer the Bacon here, but I highly recommend at least trying the sausage. You didn't drive all the way to damn Solvang to eat the same stuff you eat at home, right? Let me tell you something about the eggs here. I think they must have a local source because those eggs are so fresh. I mean, dang, you can really tell the difference from typical breakfast house eggs. And here's another thing about the eggs: they are going to be cooked perfectly. I ordered my eggs poached soft. Most places that's a very risky way to order eggs. They often come to the table undercooked and nobody want raw egg. But here I don't even trip because I know the kitchen will get it right. My wife ordered her eggs fried, over medium. That's also kind of risky at most places. A fair amount of the time your eggs will come with over cooked yolks. Not here. Here the whites are fully set but there's still liquid yolk. A lot of people complain about the long wait to get a table. I never have to wait because I get here before the crowds. I showed up at 7:40 this morning and there was no line. Only 7-8 tables of customers. When I left out of here the place was packed. Nearly all tables inside and out were filled and there were people lined up outside. So, be smart, get here early. The coffee is good here, and they also carry Constant Comment Tea, my favorite I love the waitresses here. I love them! I love everything about them. They're super efficient. They wear cool uniforms and they are super nice. If my wife would let me I would take one home with me. Hey, I'm just kidding honey, put down that rolling pin! Service was quick and friendly--we got seated fast and the food came about 15 minutes later! We had the Danish pancakes and pancake combination. The Danish pancakes were like imitation crepes. We like the eggs Benedict, the ham in the middle is slightly crunchy it's very tasty and the eggs cooked just right, the side cup fruits are fresh and sweet. The danish pancakes are thin just a bit thicker than crepes, it's my first time trying a danish pancake so it's quite exciting for me. Omelette is okay. Coffee is refillable but it's not great coffee, just so so. Utensils can be cleaner. Service is good and fast, but waiting time to get a seat at this place is a nightmare apparently a very popular place in town. We came around 10 am and got our seat around 11.30 am. Breakfast in Solvang is a big deal. Most of the spots were packed so I narrowed it down to this place and it did not disappoint! We waited a bit less than we were told because we were a party of 2 and a lot of parties left the waitlist. So keep this in mind when visiting.. get here EARLY. We were there last Spring, showed up about at about 7 am on a Saturday, and had no wait. Glad we went; if you go, get the sausages.
