I always drive by Paul's Place on my way to and from Trader Joe's. Tonight, I stopped by and finally tried it with my husband. The only con was that I was surprised that they didn't have a drive-thru. We went in, and there were people coming in and out, which is always a good sign. We ordered twister fries (which were basically curly fries), fried zucchini (a popular dish), two carne asada tacos, and a steak sandwich plate. First off, you get generous portions of every dish. The twister fries could feed an entire family of at least five and still have leftovers. It was the same thing for the fries. We're going to have leftover potatoes for days! I know why the fried zucchini is a popular dish. I loved the breading. It was perfectly crispy. It wasn't overly oily nor was the batter too thick. I also enjoyed the carne asada taco. Get ready because this is really bad. I called in to order and I was immediately asked to hold on the line, without manners -Can you hold?- thats what they said. When I finally heard back, I asked for the greek salad with chicken. As I always have ordered. I went to the restaurant to pick up my salad and added 2 shakes since my sister just had dental surgery and she can only have liquids. I paid for the order and asked the guy if I can have extra vinaigrette dressing on top of the greek dressing I originally asked, and he said "Of course". Fast forward, I got the salad and I noticed I only had one greek and one vinaigrette, so I asked if I can get any extra of each. Erika (or Erica, Idk) the main character of this nightmare, She told me they charge 50¢ per dressing, and I said ok. I gave her my card so she can charge me, she kinda panicked and told me "oh we only take cash for the extra dressings, Im gonna give it to you today, but next time you need to tell us in advance" which means, they tried to rip me off (its a damn $1 and I don't really care, but the attitude was everything) She kept smiling as if mocking me, giving me an attitude pretending to be "nice" because I was a customer. I felt really bad because I never was treated like this before, but I let it go, because I didn't want to hold any grudges. I was a bit upset with the shake because it was literally chocolate milk, very watery, again I let it slid. I took the shake to my sister, went back to my office, and started talking to my coworker about the dressings and how bad I felt because of Erika. I took my salad out of the bag and Boom! there's no chicken! I called in and was told immediately by Erika to hold on the line. I told her I cant hold, because I only had about 15 mins left to eat my food and go back to work from lunch. I told her I didn't get the chicken on my salad, and she went like "The greek salad doesn't come with chicken" and I told her, I always ordered a greek salad with chicken, which is exactly what I got except the chicken. She started talking over my voice, so I would stop talking so I can listen to her, but she hung up on me. My coworker got really upset because this lady was talking to me and losing her shit. I called back and she went over again, telling me the salad didn't come with chicken and that she's been working there for 17 years and never sold chicken on the greek salad. She went ahead and ask everyone there if they put chicken on the greek salad, which my coworker noticed and asked me, "she's asking her coworkers?" and Erika immediately said "they're not my coworkers, they're cooks" I asked her "what are they to you, then?" and she didn't respond but rather started wild talking about other stuff. I asked her what we could do, for a simple solution, and she started telling me I was confused with the salad and that I should've ordered the chicken salad instead. I told her I always get the same thing because I don't know the menu (Because I don't go there that often) but she said she could only give me a refund for the salad IF I take the salad back and hung up on me again. by this time it was almost time for me to start working. without eating. I called in again and asked her why did she hung up on me. She started yelling and said she didn't hear anything, "hello? hello?" she said and hung up because I wasn't responding. She suggested me to speak with her manager Irene, that she would give me her phone number, I asked her, "can I talk to her now?" because she was giving me an attitude, and she said "she's not available". I asked for her manager's phone number she just offered to me and she told me "you can call to the same phone number you just called. I can't provide you her private number" I asked her, who was in charge? and told me it was her, I told her "so why would you treat people like this? What kind of customer service are you providing?" and she started speaking over my voice again and said "what's the problem? are you calling because I hung up on you or because of the salad!? You hung up on me, but I'm not complaining! I am very busy right now because Im working" like if I wasn't working myself either. So to end up this stupid conversation she told me to come back before 2pm because at that time she would be off and wont be able to "further assist me". And of course hung up before saying "all good?" Paul's Place was a good restaurant with good food, but their "customer service" employees are really trash. Especially Erika, or Erica, whatever her name was. No wonder why she's been there 17 years. She has no customer service skills whatsoever. The breakfasts are always great too... and I love the French toast combo with scrambled eggs and bacon. Pauls place is always on top of it! We order breakfast burritos for the entire work staff on Friday mornings and they always take amazing care of us. We are able to call in our order ahead of time and they always have it ready to go. The lady at the cash register and who is putting the food together into bags is always super helpful and always willing to give us extra salsa for the burritos (our guys love Paul's place's salsa!). The food is decent. Basic American diner menu with some Mexican food thrown in. But it took over 45-50 mins for an order of 3 breakfast burritos. Customers walked in and the cashiers told them it was minimum 45 mins for a food order. Turned 4 customers (families) away while I sat there waiting. Not that the employees were rude, but operationally it was very unsatisfactory and frustrating. We were late for an event due to the food being so late and we opted to cancel. In my opinion, traditionally, Sunday brunch is a busy day for a diner, and this Orange staple of a restaurant was not prepared. And TBH, it wasn't even that busy in the restaurant. I am disgusted as to how they treated me tonight. I understand that Orange County is bound to be full of racists due to the people in this particular area and I'll be honest it's not the first time I've been treated like this being a Latina. I just can't believe it happened here, I've been here plenty of times before and have never had this issue happen. I ordered a salad over the phone for pickup and when I got there the line was at the door to order. So I went to the pickup window to grab my order and was told I had to wait in the back of the line to pay, which I obliged to (although if I'm doing a pickup I should be allowed to pay at the pickup window like I have many times before). Two minutes after being told that, a white male walks in goes straight to the pickup window like I did earlier and was given his order and allowed to pay and bypass the huge line at the order window. He wasn't told to get in line to pay for his phone order. No he was treated like I had expected to be, with good service. I was so upset but didn't want to create a scene. So when I got to the front I asked the gentleman why I was being told to go to the back of the order line and why this man was able to bypass the entire thing and pay at the pickup window. Of course he didn't have an answer for me other than "well he shouldn't have". I paid and left and personally I will never be returning here and this place has lost my business. I was about to leave that order there but I didn't want to waste food. I just won't ever be returning. The food was okay here not great and nothing amazing. went on Yelp this morning around 11:30 AM November 3 call one Place nobody picked up the phone went on yelp called another place called Paul's place ordered two chorizo egg and potato breakfast burritos picked them up 15 minutes later came home tasted great. I would say chorizo was not greasy eggs were cooked perfectly not overcooked fluffy potatoes were great and cheese all in the right proportions and the value for about $10 was great grilled onions into the breakfast burrito turned out very very good. I've been to other locations and it's usually good but this location is horrible. I've been here a couple of times and it's hit and miss. Today I called in a chicken dinner order and was told 25 mins, ok no problem. Got there and they said fry pilot was off... BS cause that means the fryer won't cook anything. How have I never reviewed one of the best places ever?! Paul's Place has been a favorite ever since I discovered this place over a year ago with my husband. I've always been a fan of diner food but never found one that truly felt diner-esque. If you know what I mean. The food here is so delicious. If my arteries clogged and I had heartburn all night from the grease and oil, it's all worth it. Lol, jk. But in all seriousness, Paul's Place fits the description for what diner food should look and taste. I had major cravings of french fries, fried zucchini, onion rings, juicy, tender burgers, fried chicken, orange bang, etc.! PP offers all of that and more. The portions here are huge and although some may argue it's a bit on the pricey side, you definitely get your money's worth here. Some leftovers too. I love their broasted chicken dinner. (Call in advance since they need to prepare it ahead of time.) It comes with your choice of soup or salad, fried chicken, garlicky garlic bread, potato strips. I substitute their fries for fried zucchini. The breading is the right amount of consistency where it's not overkill and the zucchini is cut thick. Among the many things we have tried here, it's done it's job to have us wanting more. The one thing that stands out is their diner sauces. I ended up getting the blue cheese bacon burger and fried mushrooms both for only 14 dollars. some places charge like 10 bucks just for the burger itself. this is why i enjoy diners so much since you really get the most bang for your buck. The burger was really delicious and sizeable. They did not skimp on the blue cheese at all. The bacon had a nice crunch to it and the patty was juicy. The fried mushroom was a great snack. It looked kinda weird, with the white cheese on top.. but regardless it was still an excellent side dish to pick. Maybe next time i'll get the fried zucchini. You definitely should ask for ranch, it'll make any deep fried veggie taste 10x better. They also have a small outdoor patio, and people were eating when i was picking up my order. The fried zucchini are a must try here! They are crunchy on the outside and warm on the inside. Not too salty either, so it's a good combination at $6.99 for an order. All their portions are huge, so we got lots of leftovers to take home. I'd recommend sharing for one order because of the portion size. I would also recommend their green salad for those who want to eat healthy. Super fresh and you get all your vegetables for the day. We came on a busy Sunday. I was a usual at the Paul's Place in Anaheim (on Magnolia), and ever since I moved I missed it! Luckily, this one is not TOO far. I was craving their chicken gyro and it did not disappoint. I was surprised to find that it taste just like I remembered it despite the different location. This location does not have a drive-thru like the one in Anaheim, but it is a whole lot bigger. Employees were really friendly and quick. I went in during lunch time and there were already a few people waiting for their to-go orders. There were some people dining in. Something I DIDN'T appreciate was the fact that there wasn't a barrier between me and the people dining RIGHT behind me as I sat on the bench waiting for me order. I only happened to notice because I heard someone cough RIGHT behind me. Personally, I would take social distancing into consideration with the "waiting" area, and the dining tables located in the same area. Otherwise! I've come to this place many times (dine-in) and never have any issues. Staffs were always great and friendly except last night. I called-in orders for pick-up. I ordered 12 pcs roasted chicken, feta fries, grilled cheese sandwich and a side order of sweet potato fries. I asked the person on the phone to repeat my order just to confirm. I overheard her say "4 pcs chicken" so I corrected her stating it should be 12 pcs, from which she agreed. Half an hour later, when I went to pick up my order, lo-and-behold, there were only 4 pcs of chicken. I have to let the person in the counter know that I ordered 12pcs and not 4. They called out the person who took my phone order for clarification and she straight out lied saying she repeated my order and that i said 4. So I have to wait another 20 mins or so to make the rest of my order. I get it. It takes a while to cook the roasted chicken and I get it, you guys are closing in 45mins. I get it, you are probably tired and can't wait to leave but this is the mere reason why I asked you to repeat my orders to avoid any misunderstanding. Having this kind of customer service reflects poorly to the restaurant. I can even see from recent Yelp reviews too, the many 1-2 stars given and it saddened me because their service used to be great! Okay so most people hate on diner food but Paul's Place is allllways my favorite spot to go to with family. The food is REALLY good, the prices are VERY reasonable, the owner is always around with friendly staff, and is never overcrowded. Paul's Place is a hidden gem in my opinion and will forever be a staple in my family! One thing I'll say is that their menu can be quite overwhelming because they have SO many options but I suggest you go with a large group and share a lill' of everything.
